“Are you satisfied?” Ed croaked as he saw Javier open his eyes and look around.

Javier squinted, not in anger but with a smile. The oxygen tube was now just under his nose, making his smile very obvious.

“You can still smile? You think everything is okay?!” Ed shouted.

He really didn’t want to be angry at him, but Ed didn’t understand how Javier could still smile. There is nothing to laugh about right now.

Javier slowly lifted his hand, wanting to reach Ed’s cheek, but he couldn’t stretch that far, and his hand couldn’t move any further.

Ed finally bent down so that Javier’s fingertips could touch him.

“You… shouldn’t be angry. You’re old. Anger makes you look even older.” Javier tried to laugh but ended up coughing.

“Enough.” Ed hissed, half-standing to call the doctor if the coughing didn’t stop, but Javier grabbed Ed’s

"I'll kill anyone who asks again. I don't care who." Ed muttered lazily.Ed felt he had given a simple order: no one was allowed to enter the burial area except those who were already permitted. However, there were still foolish individuals attempting to request entry.Ed didn't understand why so many people wanted to make him angry when he was trying to stay sane. Ed couldn't even remember how he got through the day. His brain seemed unable to store memories properly."I already gave them a chance at the chapel earlier, and that was enough. If they want to say goodbye, pray, or whatever, then that's enough." Ed would not change his mind even if someone begged. Lori was the only person allowed to accompany him to the graveyard besides his family. There was just a single individual, and that quantity was already overwhelming."I understand, Don Rosas." Otiz nodded, then turned and ran out.Ed leaned back, closed his eyes, and pressed his throbbing t

Ruby stared, though she didn't want to, and tried to focus on Lori, who was still sitting with her face covered by a cold towel—easing the headache and swelling from crying too much. But Ruby's eyes kept drifting to that corner of the room. Ed was sitting with a drink in his hand, and Mayte was beside him. They were talking. Ruby wasn't sure what they were discussing, but they were conversing. For quite a while. Too long, in Ruby’s opinion. Offering condolences shouldn’t take that long.Ruby sighed as she saw Mayte reaching out and holding Ed's arm.“Nothing special,” Ruby thought to herself, her eyes narrowing. Ed nodded and patted Mayte's hand.“Just comforting.” Ruby mumbled, convincing herself that nothing would happen between the two of them. It was normal for Mayte to offer her condolences. She must have known Javier.“Who’s comforting whom?” Lori responded, lifting the towel from her face and following Ruby's gaze.“Huh?” Ruby was startled, only to realize that she had mumbled

But the bathroom was empty. Ruby felt a bit relieved, but her anxiety hadn't eased. Ed had clearly said he was going to sleep when Ruby left to take Lori home.Ruby reached into her bag for her phone, trying to call Ed to ask (and scold him if he was working instead), but Ed's phone was in the room. Ruby stared at the vibrating device between the sheets. Ed had indeed come to the room, but now he was nowhere to be found.Ruby quickly went out to look for him, but the only people moving around the house were the servants cleaning up after the guests, tidying up as usual.“Excuse me, but have you seen Ed?” Ruby asked one of the servants.“Oh, Don Rosas... I saw him go out earlier.” The servant pointed to the side door that leads to the beach.Ruby immediately ran outside. She deeply regretted leaving Ed to take Lori home.Maybe she shouldn’t have left Ed alone. He had looked much better than Lori, who could barely stand, but that didn’t mean he felt any better. Ed was very close to Javi

Ruby wiped her wet eyes. She felt a mixture of gratitude and the realization that Ed shared Lori's sorrow. He looked fine, but he wasn’t really okay."Javier would be proud, I think. He would smile while praising." Ruby could picture it vividly. Javier always praised even the smallest kindness."It seems like it." Ed looked around, observing the room's details, to find Javier's shadow. The room was still the same, only it felt empty. The room was no longer filled with laughter and teasing."I'll let go, but you have to give me time." Ed whispered. The sorrow and sense of loss would remain, and who knows for how long? Ed knew Javier wouldn’t like it, so he asked for time to fulfill Javier's wish for happiness.Ed would grant it, like Javier's other requests. Ed would fulfill that wish. He would live and try to be happy, but there would be a time for it."I think Javier would understand and maybe get mad if you suddenly became happy without going through the grief." Ruby held Ed's hand,

"Everything is here, Senora," Tita said, handing a woven basket covered with cloth to Ruby."Ah, thank you." Ruby took it and immediately carried it to the side door that led to the beach. As the water came into view, her tied-up hair fluttered, and she glanced at the shoreline.Ruby's destination wasn't far. Ed was sitting in a shady spot near the black coral rocks, staring out at the sea. If he wasn't in Javier's room, Ed would be there. Ruby had memorized his location."Whose idea was this?" As he noticed Ruby approaching and taking a seat beside him, Ed inquired."Mine." Ruby smiled, showing the basket she brought, filled with food.Usually, Ruby would just call Ed when it was time to eat, but this time, she brought the food to him.Lunch had long passed, actually. The sky was already reddish from the sunset. Ruby had given Ed the chance to come on his own, but he hadn't. Ed was still not himself."It looks delicious," said Ed, lo

"I built this house here because Javier wanted it," whispered Ed.Ruby's throat tightened at the sound of Ed's raspy voice. But Ruby wouldn't speak. Ed just wanted to talk."I'm here now because I wanted to protect Javier. I had to make him happy. So now, what should I do?"Ruby's tears welled up. She understands a little more now. Ed wasn't just close to his brother—he loved him deeply, and then he unconsciously built his life around Javier's world. Ed didn't want to grieve and let go, but he didn't know what to do because the foundation of his world had disappeared. He felt so empty because his primary reason for moving forward was no longer there."My mother… She died after entrusting Javier to me. She requested that I take care of him. I have done that—but what now?"Ruby wiped her tears as quickly as possible so they wouldn't fall on Ed, but it was difficult. The story was heartbreaking. Ruby knew that Ed's parents had died,

“Where did he go?” Ruby panicked after seeing Javier's empty room.Ruby didn’t find Ed when she woke up and naturally assumed he was at his usual spot. But he wasn’t at the beach either. He seemed much better last night; he shouldn’t be disappearing now.Ruby turned back inside, determined to search elsewhere.“Office, terrace…” Ruby muttered, recalling the places she had already checked.“Busy?”Ruby shrieked and instinctively stepped back. The voice belonged to Pedro. The sleazy man was sitting near the garden that separated the main house and the chapel.Ruby didn’t respond and wanted to go inside immediately, but Pedro swiftly moved to block the door leading to the house.“You’re not going to return my greeting? So cold.” Pedro looked disappointed.“Aren’t you afraid Mia will see you?” Ruby reminded him of one thing that s

"Liz?" Ed snapped his fingers in front of Ruby's eyes after calling her name twice without getting an answer. He was still on the horse."Huh?" Ruby blinked, and her face turned a perfect shade of red."What were you thinking about?" Ed looked at her suspiciously."Nothing!" Ruby replied too quickly, making Ed even more suspicious."What did you ask?" Ruby tried to steer the conversation to something safer."I asked if you wanted to ride a horse too." Ed repeated the question Ruby hadn't heard earlier."Oh, I don't---It's been a long time since I rode a horse. I don't know if I still can."Ruby adjusted her answer because it made more sense. She didn't know if Liz could ride a horse, but Esli could afford to buy one. It was possible Liz knew how to ride. Saying she couldn't might cause problems later."Come here." Ed extended his hand and removed his foot from the stirrup."What...""Step here." Ed pointed to the

They eventually grew close, even though their conversations were sometimes limited because Claud was more fluent in Italian than English. Still, they got along well enough.“How did it all start?” Ed frowned.“I don’t know.” Ruby was also unsure.“Maybe I shouldn’t have agreed when AJ asked.” Liz deeply regretted it.Somehow, AJ had convinced Liz to provide a chocolate fountain for her wedding, and it had become the source of chaos. The younger children were enjoying it, but soon chocolate stains appeared on the white tablecloths, as wel

"Do I have to? I already checked that document yesterday. Can’t you do it instead?" When Ed saw another email from Otiz, he complained. It was a financial report. Since Matteo had spread his investments in every direction—across more or less thirty companies—the financial reports Otiz received came from all directions, across different types of businesses. Ed hadn't anticipated this.Being an investor wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed. He still had to work.“You’re the one who has to check it. I’m just the middleman,” Otiz firmly refused. He could refuse because the request was made over the phone. Perhaps if they were face-to-face, Otiz would be more compliant. He was no longer blindly following Ed's orders, carefully sorting out what should and should not be done. He was only responsible for delivering financial reports, not reviewing them.Ed grumbled. He was quite used to reviewing company pa

"‘What do you want to show me?’ As she approached Ed, Ruby inquired. She left AJ's side; he was busy reading a story to his two younger siblings. Elena and Elisa sat quietly, either really listening or getting sleepy. It was already time for their afternoon nap."Read this," Ed shifted, making room for Ruby to sit beside him, and handed her a phone displaying an article in Spanish. Less than two hours had passed since the publication of this hot news story.Ruby didn’t pay attention to that, though, because she was immediately stunned by the headline.‘DEA ARRESTS MAJOR MEXICAN CARTEL AND EXPOSES BILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS NETWORK’"What... you...?" Ruby turned pale and panicked, of course."Read it to the end," Ed said, pointing to the rest of the text that she had not yet seen.Ruby read quickly and frowned. Two black vans speed down a deserted road. It was already nighttime, and they were the only ones there. The end of the road was in sight—a black iron gate.“Ram it!”A shout rang out, and the vans didn’t slow down. The passengers inside, all dressed in black, held on tight as a deafening crash echoed. The gate fell, bent, but opened. The two vans barged through and stopped right in front of the brightly lit house.“Get in and kill everyone!”Another shout, and the people inside the vans scrambled out, storming into the beachside house. Some were carrying firearms; others were wielding clubs. However, as they entered, everyone froze. No one came to greet them. The house was supposed to be full of guards, which was why they had come in numbers—ready for a confrontation. In reality, what greeted them was silence. Not a single person appeared, even though the house was brightly lit.“

Mia seemed to be scolding him, but everyone knew Mia could never really be upset at AJ.Ruby had to step in, followed by Ed to watch over Elisa and Elena. Although falling on the sand wouldn't hurt, the beach had sharp rocks that could scrape them."Mommy! They should chase me! Don't pick them up!" AJ didn’t want his little sisters to be carried away and stop the fun."Alright," Ruby said, intending to supervise them closely."How about we take a vacation?" Ed abruptly proposed the idea, having just finished reading a message on his phone."Hm?" Ruby was surprised. There had been no suc

"Here."Ed gave Otiz a handkerchief to wipe away his tears. If it had been just a few, he would have let Otiz cry—and wiped the tears with the sleeve of his jacket. The problem was that Otiz couldn’t stop crying. He had already been emotional when Ed stood beside him at the altar, and it got worse when he saw Lori walking down the aisle, escorted by flowers. It was all too beautiful and dazzling for his eyes.“Sorry,” Otiz stammered, wiping the remaining tears from his face.“What are you apologizing for? At a wedding, shedding tears is not considered inappropriate. You're just too happy. No one will blame you.” Ed gently patted Otiz’s shoulder and then turned his gaze forward.Of course, Lori was the focus of the event. Her choice of dress was perfect, blending seamlessly with the entire garden decor. Flowers, ribbons, music, and all the other elements were carefully and precisely chosen—now showcasi

Ed tapped his finger on the glass in his hand. His eyes were fixed on a single point—Marco Reyes. The man was speaking with Otiz. Nothing important. Marco was just making small talk, and Otiz was doing the same—being polite, answering Marco's questions about his law firm's progress. Ed actually needed to speak to both of them, but he chose to start with Marco first.Ed just needed to gesture with his chin, and Otiz understood immediately. He excused himself, making up a reason, and left Marco alone."I need to talk to you," Ed said as he approached."Oh? What is it?" Marco immediately followed Ed, moving to the quiet side yard. The other guests filled the living room."I want you to handle the shipment to Ecuador and Brazil next week."Marco looked as if he had choked. This was incredibly surprising. He wanted to try feeding the babies—and he chose Elisa.Usually, Tita was around to help Ruby, but today Tita was busy, so Ruby had been on her own since earlier."You can, but please be careful, okay? Don’t let her choke, and don’t squeeze." Ruby guided AJ's hand to hold the bottle filled with pre-warmed breast milk, helping him apply just the right pressure so it wouldn't press too hard against Elisa's lips."Wow! Look, Mommy! From their disheveled appearance, it was clear that Liz and Asher had either just rushed out of a room or possibly run over here. One thing was certain: as soon as they heard the news about Ruby, they had hurried over."Where? Ruby... You're pale. Why... It shouldn't be happening now."Just like Lori, Liz was out of breath as she approached Ruby, panicking. The news had shocked everyone. Liz had already planned to stay in Puerto Vallarta next week to be there for Ruby when she gave birth.Of course, Liz no longer lived at Ed’s house. She had managed to buy her own apartment.“I’m fine, and they’re fine too. But the nurse hasn’t brought them here yet.
