~ Cain ~

‘Shit, Cain. This is bad. They’re insisting that they’re going to talk to the Dean on Monday. Dad’s saying we’re going to apply for an annulment and—’

Standing in the dining area of the kitchen, staring out the window towards her house, I cursed and slammed an open palm into the back of the dining chair, sending it spinning off its feet to smack against the tiles, then slide across the space and under the kitchen island before it slammed into the base of the cupboards there.

I felt my eyes shift and my skin ripple. It had taken half an hour to shove my wolf away and now I had to keep a grip on myself. I couldn’t afford to lose control and make this worse.

~ Kelsie ~Through the bond I could feel the tension in Cain even before my father took off out of the house. When my mother tried to hold me back, and I screamed at him through the bond not to hurt my father, when I finally got loose from my mother’s desperate grip and ran after my father, who was disappearing into Cain’s house just as I took a running leap off our front porch and sprinted across the yard, I was terrified I was going to be too late.I could feel his wolf fighting to be released, feel him warring with himself and it made my feet fly.I hurdled the low fence between our driveways, then pounded up his path, almost crying when I heard my father threatening him.“K

~ Kelsie ~It took me an hour of soothing Cain, worrying about my parents, looping thoughts about the future to realize what that small niggle was at the back of my mind. And once I did, it wouldn’t leave me alone. But Cain was in pieces, so I also couldn’t just walk away.He had curled himself around me when my parents left, and it took a long time to coax him back out. I could feel him arguing with his wolf, and knew that it was my father’s life that would hang in the balance if he lost that fight, so I stayed quiet and just stroked him, sending reassurance and encouragement whenever it felt like the right time, but otherwise leaving him alone.I was growing tenser and tenser, though. My parents were good people. But they were very protective, and they

  • My Alpha Teacher's Pet   76. The Wolf

SOUNDTRACK: “To the Wolves,” by Stitched Up Heart and Escape the Fate. ***** ~ Kelsie ~ Sucking in a shocked breath, I screamed for Cain out loud and through the bond, my voice, piercing and high, penetrating the dark like a laser. I felt him answer more than heard it. But the first thing I saw was the front door of my house open and my father rush out, wild-eyed, grabbing at the door frame to launch himself out of the house—his eyes going even wider as he caught sight of the animal just feet from me. “Kelsie! What—” “Dad, don’t move!” I hissed, throwing my hands up to stop him. I heard a strange, eerie voice then, that said only two words.

~ Cain ~The strange wolf tucked its tail and ran.At first, instinct kicked in. I followed it over the fence, gaining an inch with each stride, straining, growling, determined to take this fucker out for threatening my mate—but then Kelsie reached for me through the link, pleading with me not to let myself get hurt, and an uneasy weight settled in my chest. Then, without slowing or turning, the strange wolf scratched at my mind which was such a shock I almost missed a step.I opened a sliver of my mind to him, locking myself down so I wouldn’t reveal even the smallest information about Kelsie or our lives together.‘Why a weak human? You could have been so much more,’

~ Kelsie ~I sucked in a breath and my father’s grip on my elbow tightened. “What is it?” he asked, his voice heavy with dread.“You… I know this is crazy Dad, but I need you to trust me. Cain can talk in my head. He’s coming, and he’s saying that more wolves are coming. You have to leave. Both of you—you have to get out of here. They don’t care about you, as long as you don’t try to stand between them and me—’“Kelsie, we are not leaving you alone to—”“I won’t be alone! Cain is going to protect me—you saw that! ~ Cain ~“That’s… that’s not possible,” I breathed, every sense jangling with alarm because I knew I had to leave this place, had to get Kelsie out of here. But what this man was saying… it couldn’t be.Could it?I stared at him, not even breathing, as I tried to get my head around what he was saying. My wolf… my wolf was a part of me. Had always been a part of me. We were… we were the same—weren’t we?But Kelsie’s father turned to look at me, his eyes flickering shadows that I recognized as a strong male wolf’s inner battle when faced with an even stronger male—the desire to dominate battling the urge to submit to a wolf with superior rank.

  • My Alpha Teacher's Pet   80. More than You Know

~ Kelsie ~It was really hard to take it in. Cain and my father went downstairs for some kind of man-to-man that I didn’t think I wanted to be a part of, but it wasn’t going to be long. Cain was really clear that we needed to move as fast as possible—before the pack could send a group of wolves to take me. So Mom stayed to help me find all the little things my brain was too busy to think of, while they went downstairs.Except, even though Mom picked up a few things and threw them in my bag, she did more crying and blowing her nose than helping.“Mom, please… he’s a good man. He’s going to protect me, not hurt me.”“I know that, Kelsie. Probably better than you—your father was the same. I just… we tried to

~ Kelsie (a few minutes earlier) ~I stayed in the hallway with my mother watching my mate and my father walk to the back door, heads turned to each other, their faces serious and protective and…“He’s a good one,” my mom sighed. “I can see it, Kelsie. I should have known you wouldn’t be fooled. I’m sorry.”I wanted to cry. “He is a good one. The best. He’s just like Dad, except for the wolf part.”My mother gave a little huff of laughter, wiping her eyes. “Oh, I think they’re more alike than you think,” she said, then cut me a sly look from the side. “There’s more than one advantage to having a male of the wolf variety. And… you know, the human part of that isn’t lost even if they give up their wolves,” she sniggered.

~ Cain ~The celebration lasted late into the evening. We talked and joked through the afternoon until the bonfires were lit. Then we feasted and danced. And the pack… whatever had happened between all of us was a miracle. Because suddenly, Kelsie could hear all of them clearly, and they could feel her—sense her love, her strength, and her heart. And they were starting to love her as much as I did.Well, almost. For the past hour we had huddled together on a log next to the bonfire, a thick blanket over our legs. But then Kelsie leaned into my ear and whispered, “I need to go to the bathroom. And I’m going to have to put pants on, there is just too m

So I didn’t expect the ceremony to have any real impact, except to make me and my mother cry.But the moment the wolves closed in around us, it was like the air began to crackle. And then, when Cain started the words, goosebumps trickled down my spine. He swallowed hard, his voice deep and husky—and echoed a second time in the pack link.“See here my will that is bowed to yours,” he started quietly. “I eat my pri

SOUNDTRACK: “Every Part of Me” by BASHAM. ***** ~ Cain ~ Staring at Kelsie as she looked up at her Dad—whose face was a picture of relief and pride—made my heart begin to beat even harder. I didn’t know where she and her mother had found such a gown, but she looked stunning in it. It looked like the entire thing had been knitted—like a thick, luxurious cableknit sweater, yet somehow it hugged every curve of her body from the high turtleneck, all the way down to her hips where it flared and hung in heavy gathers—but when she moved, the fabric clung to her legs beneath the skirt as well, revealing every curve and… I had to clear my throat and remind myself we had an audience as Kelsie reached up to hug her father, and the pack began to gather

I wasn’t so sure. I stood at one end of the small clearing near our packhouse, arms folded and my sweater-sleeves pulled up to my forearms because that was how Kelsie liked them. • My Alpha Teacher's Pet   96. The Last Betrayal – Part 3

~ Kelsie ~I was stunned when Felix became human again. Then hope rose in my chest, because he was clearly weak and struggling. Bleeding and panting, staring at Cain and struggling to speak.A little piece of me crumbled. He looked so shaky and broken. I wondered if he would submit and Cain would let him live. I could feel my mate’s conflicting emotions, that he didn’t relish killing his brother. But the betrayal…The fiercest emotion burning in Cain was rage—at the betrayal.I knew this wasn’t easy on him.I swayed closer, wanting to go to him, but knowing I couldn’t intervene while they were still technically fighting. All the wolves stared at them, eyes cold a

~ Cain ~Had I been fighting another wolf who didn’t know me so well, this was the moment to engage, to rush and take their neck high and bear down, flip the dog on his back and close on his throat if he didn’t submit. But Felix would be expecting that. And sure enough, in the blink where he realized there was no danger behind him and returned his full attention to me, he switched—rushing his longer body and heavier weight forward, on the attack, to make me hesitate.I didn’t even think, just let my instincts take over and feinted, first to one side, then the other, waiting for the third switch and praying Felix would instinctively anticipate it.And he did.A howl of victory started in my head as Felix shifted h

And… Felix…” she trailed off. I waited, but then my patience snapped.“Felix, what?!” I roared. Many of the wolves flinched, including Lauren, whose head dropped even lower.
