Chapter 28

Zara's eyes fluttered open to the morning light, her head pounding from the hangover. She moaned in discomfort.

Then, a cool, detached voice said, "There's water on the nightstand to your left."

Was that Yosef?

She snapped her eyes open to find Yosef lounging in a chair by the bed. His legs were crossed, and his eyes were on her.

"Mr. Webb, what are you doing here?" She glanced around, realizing she was in a hospital with an IV drip hooked to her arm. Confusion set in. "What happened to me?"

Yosef replied, his voice even, "Do you not remember anything from last night?"

"I remember I drank too much and got drunk. I felt sick to my stomach, and my gut hurt a lot. I was a complete mess, but I figured crashing at home would do the trick. Was a trip to the hospital really necessary?”

She had a sinking feeling. "What else is wrong with me?"

Yosef looked at her with an unreadable expression. "You had a miscarriage."

Zara froze, then felt her heart drop like a stone.
