CHAPTER 3: COLD AND DISTANT
I politely declined Miss Yeye’s invitation to eat because I wanted to rest before my ex-husband's arrival tonight.
I didn’t sleep well last night because of too many things I needed to think about.
The sadness was evident in Miss Yeye's eyes as she followed me with her gaze up to the stairs.
The spacious guest room greeted me. I removed my high heels and carelessly tossed them on the floor, walked towards the glass sliding door, and opened it, stepping out onto the veranda.
I squinted my eyes as I looked in the lush green surroundings. The distant mountains, tall trees bearing fruit, the vast pineapple and vegetable plantations, as well as other fruits that are exported to other countries.
The Hacienda Constancia is truly a paradise. In addition, the Hacienda also supports many lives, from the workers to the scholars…
I slept for a few hours before someone knocked on the door of my room.
"Señorita, Sir Nexus, and Sir Alejandro are here."
I was startled by the name they called me.
"I'll be right there. And not Señorita. Don't call me that."
The woman nodded and turned away shyly. She seemed new to the mansion but she recognized my face. She looked like Bernard’s daughter who lived near the pineapple plantation.
I put my high heels on again since I couldn't find any slippers inside. I could hear noises from the living room as I was still descending the stairs. I also saw some maids carrying some suitcases upstairs.
Almeradez’s brother's gaze fell on me as I finally descended the stairs.
Nexus' face lit up when he saw me. The blue color of his eyes was almost sparkling as he looked at me.
"S-Steph," he called me in a stuttering voice.
Compared to the last time I saw him; he was not as pale anymore. His shoulder-length hair was tied in a man bun. He was sitting in a wheelchair with a private nurse behind him.
I approached Nexus as he offered his hand to me. I tried my best not to flinch when I finally held his hand.
My ex-husband gave me an innocent smile.
"Steph," he called me again, so my lips curled up.
"Hi," I spoke softly.
"I-I'm here."
"Yes. You'll stay here until you get better."
"W-Will you take care of me?" he asked like a child, his eyes were speaking.
"Yes."
"T-Thank you." He raised both of my hands and affectionately kissed them.
I simply took it back and turned to Miss Yeye who was beside Alejandro.
"Miss Yeye, is Nexus' room ready?"
"Yes," said the old woman after shifting her gaze to Nexus.
Yeye’s face reflects sympathy for the man's situation. Alejandro introduced Rex, my ex-husband’s private nurse – to me. The man also had some knowledge of therapy and was recommended by the GICC hospital.
The dinner went well. Alejandro led the conversation to avoid any awkward silence. I sat quietly next to Nexus and occasionally fed him as requested. I didn't speak unless I was asked. I felt suffocated the whole time. If Nexus hadn’t been curious, I probably would have left the dinner table earlier.
After dinner, Rex took Nexus to the master's bedroom. The nurse didn't have any trouble because the three-story mansion had an elevator.
I, on the other hand, escorted Alejandro out of the house. He had to go back to Manila because he had important things to do there. I felt heavy as I followed him. I looked at him casually when we got close to his car and faced me.
"Mara, I know that this is hard for you. But if you really don't like what you're doing, you better stop it."
"What do you mean?"
"Nexus is smart, I know he's suspicious now. You can't help him regain his memory if you're always avoiding him," Alejandro sighed, "If you can't do this job, it's better to tell me now. I'll tell Leticia myself. If you continue to avoid Nexus, he will ask himself what's wrong and there's a big possibility that he will force himself to remember. If you're just going to put my brother in a difficult situation, it's better if you quit this job and stay away."
Alejandro's blue eyes looked seriously at me as if reading my mind. I held back from reacting to those blue eyes. It had the same eyes as Nexus Almeradez.
"You don't know what I feel, Alejandro.”
"I never said I knew what you felt."
"This isn't easy for me,"
"Then quit the job. It's that simple. If you're worried about money, I'll make sure Leticia will not make a demand to you to give the down payment back.
I gave a fake laugh as an answer.
"Take care of my brother. If you can't be with him, the Hacienda Constancia will always be open for you to leave."
I didn't reply, just watched as Alejandro got in his car and left. I stood in front of the mansion until the car was out of sight.
I sighed and a bitter smile formed on my lips. Alejandro was right. If I didn't want to, I would not do it.
If I wanted to, I would. But it wasn't just about the money, I agreed to this for a reason.
"I don't need your money," I muttered softly in the dim light coming from the mansion. "I want to see your brother hurt too. I want to see him broken, just like how he broke me."
When I went back inside, the servants were already in their respective rooms.
I climbed the stairs and headed for the guest room I occupied. But after a few minutes of holding the lock, I let go and walked to the opposite door.
The cold lock of the master's bedroom gave me shivers. It had been two years since the last time I entered the room where I and Nexus had a good relationship. Good, happy... but it was all a lie.
I saw Nexus on the bed, leaning against the headboard while Rex was massaging his feet. The room was bright and I could clearly see the glint in Nexus’ eyes when I looked at him.
I walked closer to the bed and sat on the left side. Stretched my legs on the soft mattress and adjusted the pillows behind me for more comfort as Rex massaged his boss’ thighs down to his feet.
"When is he coming back for therapy?" I asked the private nurse. I didn't pay attention to Nexus’ hands on my waist
"Next month, Ma'am. Dr. Johanson says Sir Nix needs to rest before he gets back to the therapy sessions."
"I already prepared the room you’ll use. It's just beside this master's bedroom. Or if you want, I can arrange an extra bed here so it will be easier for you to take care of Nexus."
"N-No," Nexus protested and squeezed my waist.
I ignore him. "This room is big enough Rex. It won't be a hassle for you. From time to time, you have to take care of him."
"N-No," he protested again. "Y-You... you will take care of me. You're the one I want."
"What do you think, Rex?"
The man shyly looked down and scratched his head, especially when Nexus looked at him. "No need, Ma'am. I'm okay with my room."
"You can call me, Amara."
"M-Ma'am?"
"You can call me by my first name. Let's not be formal, we're the same age, right?"
The man nodded, blushing.
Nexus raised one of his hands to signal Rex to stop. He glared at the nurse as the man left the room. When the door closed, Nexus squeezed my waist again which formed a small smirk in my lips.
His face was dark when I looked at him, the gaze was threatening. Like before whenever he didn't like something I did and I needed to be punished.
"W-What is it?" His voice stammered, but the coldness was evident.
"What?" I asked.
Instead of answering, he just leaned closer and pulled me close. I didn’t react immediately and it was too late when my face was buried in his chest. I inhaled when his natural smell hit my nostrils.
God, he's still so brusque.
When he caressed my left cheek, I came to my senses and pushed him hard. He would have fallen on the floor if he hadn't grabbed the headboard in time. His eyes widened.
I pulled Nexus back to his position on the bed. I felt his gaze and shrugged it off.
"Go to sleep," I said.
He barely nodded, so I helped him lie down on the bed. I covered him with the comforter and turned on the lamp. I turned off the light on the ceiling and went back to bed.
I pointed to the buzzer on its nightstand. "Press the buzzer if you need something."
When he nodded, I turned to leave but before I could take a step, Nexus grabbed my hand.
I looked back and saw the blue eyes of my ex-husband. "Why?"
"Y-You won't sleep next to me. Where are you going?"
"I have some paperwork to finish. I won’t be at work for the next few days so I need to finish them.”
Nexus didn't answer so I removed his hand. I felt cold all of a sudden.
"I need to go. Just press the buzzer if you need something."
I straightened the blanket again and walked towards the door.
"W-Why do I feel like you're being distant from me? You're here but I feel like you're far from me, Steph."
CHAPTER 4: CRIED AGAIN My close friend Castiel was smiling at me when I met him in front of the mansion. He had a teasing grin on his lips when he handed a bouquet of flowers."You didn't tell me you were coming back to the hacienda. Change of mind?"I scowled and invited him inside. We met Miss Yeye coming down the stairs. She looked at Castiel curiously."Yeye, can you please put this in a vase?” I asked. The old woman hesitated before taking the flowers from my hand. "You're the young man of Revamonte, aren’t you? The owner of Rancho Revamonte?"Rancho Revamonte is the neighboring land of Hacienda Constancia.Castiel nodded and politely bowed slightly to the old woman. "Yes, Ma'am. That's me."Miss Yeye nodded and looked at the flowers in her hand before looking back at me."Where should I put this, Stephanie?”"At my office, please." My office means the guest room that I’m using."Are you sure?" she doubts. I almost rolled my eyes. I knew what the old woman was trying to imply,
CHAPTER 5: PARALYZED I stopped in my tracks when I heard a familiar voice inside Nexus’ room "Leave us first," it was Leticia. Rex was surprised to see me standing in front of the door. He bowed at me and left, leaving the door slightly open. Leticia and Hordan arrived early this morning, riding in a chopper that landed on the rooftop of the mansion. I was even more annoyed because my sleep was interrupted. It would have been better if I was sleeping in the master's bedroom because it was soundproof. The servants were also disturbed by the sudden arrival and like a queen of the house, Leticia, she ordered the helpers, one after another. Even Miss Yeye, who hasn’t slept much yet, was being ordered around by the witch. "I have some papers here that need your signature." I didn't hear an answer from Nexus. "You just need to sign these for some company projects.” My eyebrows raised with Leticia’s tone of voice. She was talking to Nexus like a kid. Why does Nexus need to
CHAPTER 6: SUSPECTS Twenty missed calls greeted me when I finally turned on my phone. They all came from the same number and I had a hunch who it was. Rex was also asking if I was going back to Hacienda Constancia. I deleted the missed calls and put my phone back inside my bag. It was starting to get dark so the street lights of the driveways of Hacienda were already lit. I slowed down my walk, I didn’t want the moment to end anytime soon. Because the moment I entered the mansion again, I knew I wouldn’t be able to breathe comfortably again. Being around my ex-husband suffocates me. It was six evenings when I finally arrived at the front door of the mansion. I recognized Alejandro’s car as I noticed how quiet the mansion was. There was no sign of Leticia nor Hordan. “You came back.” I looked over my shoulder and saw Nix’s brother just come out of the Master’s bedroom. He was looking at me with those cold intimidating eyes. “What do you mean by that?” “You left without
CHAPTER 7: FLOWERS AND A REWARD “Nexus!” I ran to him as soon as I entered his room. He was struggling on the floor, the wheelchair lying above half of his body. His eyebrows were furrowed and groaned in pain. “Nexus!” I called and shook him slightly to wake him up. I was startled for a moment when I saw his bleeding hand. Pieces of broken glass from a bottle of medicine were scattered on the floor. I cursed in a low voice and put my palm on his head. He has a fever and—where the hell was his private nurse?! Damn it! I repeatedly pressed the buzzer to get help but no one answered the intercom. “Shit!” I tried to lift him up. “S-Steph…” “I need to get you up. Come on, help me will you?” I said, relief that he’s awake. I winced as we almost both fell over as I dragged his heaviness towards the bed. He’s really heavy, bulky—damn! I wanna hit this guy! I was panting heavily by the time I finally settled him against the headboard of the bed. He was whimpering when I g
CHAPTER 8: SEEING HIS FORMER IN-LAWS My eyes widened and I froze in my seat. His soft lips caused an electrifying feeling that made my whole body numb—paralyzing my system. He pulled away as quickly as his lips touched mine. Ears and neck turned red before he buried his face in the curve of my neck. If it wasn’t for his hand touching my waist, I wouldn’t come to my senses. I swallowed a few times and gently removed his head from my shoulder. “Rest now. I’ll wake you up when the food is ready.” He must have sensed my avoidance because he gently squeezed my waist before slowly letting go. I helped him lie down in bed. The next day, the new chef arrived at the mansion. I knew her back in high school. Analyn was my friend together with Meimei. The woman used to be a troublemaker back then, but now, she’s one of the in-demand chefs’ in the country. She gave me the infamous ‘criminal offensive side-eye’ and I rolled my eyes at her, in return. Analyn laughed. Nexus l
CHAPTER 9: THE FIANCEE Cars were already parked in front of my sister’s house when I arrived. I could hear the laughter of the children coming from the garden of the mansion. I get out of the car after grabbing the large paper bag from the back seat. A maid from Rocc's family greeted me and led me to where the celebration was. The birthday celebrant, Sevi, excitedly ran towards me. “Auntie!” Sevi gleefully clung to my legs and looked up to me with his innocent green eyes. “Happy birthday.” I greeted and kissed my nephew’s forehead. He hugged the paper bag I was holding and smiled at me. “Is this for me?” I nodded and finally gave it to him. “Sevi, you’ll open your gifts later. Put it on the table with other gifts.” My sister let me sit at one of the tables when Sevi placed the paper bag with other gifts. “Dad is overacting,” I said, almost whining. “I told you, maybe this is a second chance for you and Nix.” “There’s no second chance,” I emphasized every word. Nes
CHAPTER 10: DÉJÀ VU Angel Love was nowhere to be found when Nexus had an accident, according to Alejandro. A month after the court granted our annulment, Nexus, and Angel Love’s engagement, was all over the TV stations, newspapers, and social media. Leticia liked her for her son. When Nix and I were still married, Angel Love clung to my ex-husband like a leech, sucking the positive energy of our marriage. I passed by her like I didn’t see the woman. And as if on cue, my sister approached me so I could say goodbye. “I saw Nexus’ fiancée. Do you want me to shoo her away?” she whispered while giving Angel Love a sharp look. “Let her be. Looks like she’s enjoying being a senator’s mistress.” It’s not a surprise to me that she’s cheated. “What about Nexus?” I shrugged and kissed my sister's cheek. “That’s their problem, not mine. Anyway, I have to go.” She and Sebastian accompanied me to my car. I waved at them and started maneuvering away from Northshire Village. I stopped
CHAPTER 11 (PART 1) I peeked into the pantry when I heard the familiar laughter of my ex-husband. His face was smiling as he picked up the rolling grapes on the floor. He wiped them on his clothes before putting them into his mouth and laughing again with my employees. He was far from the Nexus I used to know when he was dealing with other people. He’s now down to earth, laughing and getting along with others easily. Nexus looked happier than I could remember. I sat on the couch, tired. I visited two branches of Casa Amara. It’s still under construction and I am really meticulous, especially with the materials. “Steph, I brought our launch,” Nexus said sweetly. I looked at him and told him to come in. I put a big smile on my face as he placed the food tray on the center table. He reached for something from his back pocket. My heart skipped a beat when he handed me a one-stem pink rose. “I-I have my own launch.” Nexus walked towards my table to get my lunch box. I stopped
CHAPTER 13 (PART 1)FLASHBACK, YEARS AGO I was sure that the car parked in front of our house didn’t belong to my sister’s annoying ex-boyfriend, Sebastian. And definitely, it wasn’t to our neighbor either. Sevi ran to me when the little kid saw his beautiful aunt. He raised both of his hands, urging me to carry him. He’s still in his pajamas and just woken up like me. “Auntie, up!” he pouted. I picked him up and kissed the baby of the family on the cheek as he put his head on my chest. “Where’s your mom?” I asked as I walked down the six-step staircase, still carrying Sevi. “Don’t know. Is Daddy outside?” “The car outside isn’t his—” I didn’t get to finish what I was supposed to say when I saw who was sitting on the couch. “Hello, Steph.” Nexus Almeradez greeted and smiled at me. “Auntie, close your mouth.” Sevi laughed. “Why are you here?” I asked, telling him I was very surprised to see this one-night-stand man I chose to forget. “Am I not allowed to visit you?
CHAPTER 12 Pain crossed in his face but I didn’t budge. Who cares if he’s hurting. I’m just telling the truth. “Can you tell me now what you want? I still have a lot of work to do in my office.” “We need your help,” Alejandro said. “I’m wasting my time here.” I said grudgingly and took and took my handbag to leave, I was about to walk away when Nexus grabbed my wrist and pulled me back to the chair. “I don’t appreciate your hand touching me, Mister,” I spat and glared at him. Reluctantly, he let go of my wrist. Alejandro spoke again in a serious tone. “This is not a waste of time, Stephanie. It is a death and life situation. You know what Leticia is doing. They are taking advantage of Nix’s situation to spend his money.” “What does it have to do with me?” “A lot! You will be the savior of Nix’s wealth,” he answered, which made me scrunch my nose. “Be Nix’s wife again.” My forehead furrowed in annoyance. “Are you out of your mind?” “We are serious, Amara Stephanie.
CHAPTER 11 (PART 2) It’s my fault too that I lost my baby. I am the mother and I should have been the first to know I was pregnant. “I didn’t remember anything but I feel like I need to say sorry.” “Your sorry can’t bring back my child. I hate you! I hate you so much!” I removed his arms from my waist as I stood up from my bed. He’s still kneeling and even bowed his head more. “Get up, Nexus,” I said, almost in a whisper. “You only hurting me more with what you’re doing.” The door opened. Alejandro and Rex were surprised when they saw Nexus' situation. I shook my head and went back to bed. I decided to ignore them and closed my eyes. My heart was numb and I didn’t want to deal with any of them. Alejandro forced his brother to get up and leave the room. Fortunately, they didn’t come back again. My parents arrived after. When the doctor gave his signal for me to go home, I didn’t waste any time. I don’t like hospitals; it brings me many painful memories. When we got home
