Chapter 125

Author: Hauling Treasures
Iris, lacking the strength to argue with him, said weakly, "Let's go."

Jason shot a condescending glance at Ted before bending down to lift Iris effortlessly in his arms. He turned to the gate and walked away.

Ted stood frozen, as if struck by lightning. He had thought that without Stanley around, winning Iris' affection would be just a matter of time. But now, Jason had appeared out of nowhere—an accomplished, wealthy lawyer who was even better-looking than Stanley.

His hands clenched tightly by his sides as a strong sense of crisis welled up within him. He had missed his chance once; this time, he couldn't let it slip away again no matter what! Watching Jason carry Iris away only fueled his determination.

Iris must be his! He'd do anything to make sure of that! He would let no one stop him!

Jason carried Iris into the elevator and soon arrived at her apartment.

"The key is in my pocket," Iris said softly.

Jason set her down gently and reached into her coat pocket to retriev

Jason lowered his gaze, concealing the tumult of emotions within his eyes. "I'm glad you're okay. I'll see you tomorrow, then."He picked up his coat and headed towards the door."Wait, Mr. Just," Iris called out.He paused but didn't turn back, deliberately avoiding looking at her."You took care of me all night. You must be hungry, right? Let me make you breakfast before you leave," she offered, wanting to express her gratitude.Jason wanted to stay too, but he hesitated. Given her current state, he feared that staying would be both agonizing and unbearable for him—he worried he might lose control."No need, save it and add it to the tab." He opened the door and stepped out.The cold air hit him sharply, but it failed to douse the fire inside him.Since he lived nearby, it only took him a few minutes to return home.Once inside, he shed his clothes, headed to the bathroom, and turned on the shower. The rhythmic sound of water filled the space as he stood under the warm casca

Ted stared at the pills in the punk's hand, hesitating. But the image of Iris being taken away by Jason hardened his resolve."I want them, but can you guarantee that this stuff works?" he asked. The punk grinned. "Bro, you must not be a regular here. I promise it's effective. If it doesn't work, I'll refund your money. If you still don't believe me, I can have someone try it in front of you."The punk's confident demeanor managed to convince Ted. "Alright, I trust you."The punk patted his shoulder. "Don't worry, I wouldn't trick you. I'm running a long-term business here; I wouldn't ruin my reputation over one deal."He handed the pills to Ted. "One pill is already effective enough, but if you're worried that it's not strong enough, use two, but no more than that because it could be fatal."Ted slipped the pills into his pocket. Because this kind of transaction was illegal, the payment was usually made in cash to avoid leaving any trails. He took out a stack of bills and hand

Ted called Yvonne again.-Iris and Jason arrived at the law firm. Denise was waiting for Iris at the lobby. As soon as she spotted Iris, she stood up to greet her."What are you doing here?" Iris asked.Denise looked curiously at both Iris and Jason. "You two came to work together?" Her tone implied that her real question was if they had spent the night together.Iris finally figured out why Denise and Yvonne got along so well; they both shared a love for gossip and making speculations. She smiled at Jason and said, "I'll go up in a minute."Jason nodded and walked away.Iris pulled Denise aside. "Denise, please stop teasing me."Denise laughed. "Okay, I'll stop. But honestly, your boss is great. If you don't seize the opportunity, someone else will, and you'll regret it."Iris smiled helplessly. She acknowledged that Jason was an exceptional man, but she was just recently divorced, so she had no interest in pursuing another relationship. Besides, she knew it was impossibl

Iris looked up to see Mike Henderson. She offered him a smile. "Yes, I'm meeting a friend here."Mike's expression changed slightly at her response."It's not Yvonne," Iris quickly added, noticing his concern. "Are you here to have lunch too?"Mike shook his head. "No, I work here."He seemed comfortable in his own skin, not feeling inferior because of his job."You're working here?" Iris only now noticed his waiter's uniform."Miss Glover!" Denise approached quickly. "Sorry, I got stuck in traffic.""I just got here too," Iris said, standing up.Denise took her seat, and Mike handed her the menu. "Please take a look and see what you'd like."Denise took the menu and flipped through it. After a moment of thought, she looked at Iris. "What would you like to have?"Mike chimed in, "I recommend the crab roe fried rice and the wine crab. Those are our specialties."Iris looked up at Mike. "This is my friend, so don't try to trick us with overpriced food.""I'm not, Iris. I'm ma

This situation would be unbearable for any man, let alone a military officer."Have you always known about your brother and this woman?" Iris asked.Denise shook her head. "I only found out after he got into trouble. Before that, he did mention that he had a girlfriend, but he wouldn't get married. When my family asked, he said she's a divorcee and didn't want to marry again so soon. We didn't think much of it. Turns out the woman is a military spouse, not a divorcee."After a pause, Denise asked, "It's a difficult case, right?"Iris replied honestly, "Don't get your hopes up."Denise's shoulders slumped, looking dejected."I'll ask Mr. Just to see if there's a way," Iris continued. "I consider you a friend, so don't do this again." She handed the card back to Denise.Reluctantly, Denise took it back. "I feel like I'm troubling you.""It's no trouble. Besides, you bought me lunch, didn't you?" Iris replied.Denise smiled. Regardless of the eventual outcome, she was grateful fo

"Ted." Iris' eyes widened in shock and confusion at Ted's words and facial expression. How could he say such a thing?"You got it wrong," she clarified, trying her best to keep her mind clear. "He's just my boss. He has no feelings for me, and I don't think about him in that way either...""Really?" Ted was clearly unconvinced. He said, his voice hoarse, "You'd rather have him take you home than me. Why? You've known me for eight years; don't I deserve your trust more than someone you've only known for a few months? Am I not worth your trust?"Iris stood up from the couch. "I don't feel so well; I have to go..."She attempted to leave, but Ted seemed unperturbed."You're not leaving," he stated unhurriedly. The moment Iris stood up, she swayed unsteadily and fell back onto the couch. "What have you done to me?"Something felt terribly wrong. This wasn’t merely the feeling of being drunk. Why did she feel so weak?Ted embraced her, gently kissing her on the forehead. She strugg

Iris did not have the strength to escape, so spoke softly in an attempt to reach Ted's conscience. "I've known you for eight years, Ted. Even if I don't love you in that way... I've always considered you my good friend... and I've always trusted you... This is against the law... If you do this, I'll never forgive you..."Ted responded with a manic laugh, sending a shiver down Iris' spine. She felt suffocated by the darkness in Ted's heart."After we have sex, you'll fall in love with me. It's not illegal for a man and a woman who love each other to have sex, is it?" he said, reaching to unbutton her coat. "Do you know that I've never loved another woman in my life?"His fingers brushed against her delicate neck, making Iris' hair stand on end – Iris' body instinctively rejected him.Ted's voice dropped to a low, hoarse whisper. "I'm a normal man with needs. Do you know how I usually satisfy my needs?"Iris was the subject of his fantasy. Every time he masturbated, he fantasized ab

Ted quickly ended the call, glaring at Iris. "Are you really so unwilling to be with me?"Since Iris' plan was foiled, she stopped pretending. Ted would no longer believe her anyway. She expressed her disgust of him openly. "I can't believe you're actually such a disgusting man, Ted Zeller! Simply looking at you makes me feel sick! How could I possibly want to be with you?"His eyes twitched. "You find me disgusting?"A moment later, he continued, "Okay, if that's how you see me, then I'll show you how disgusting I can be!"Fury consumed him as Iris' words filled his mind. He lunged at Iris, tearing at her clothes recklessly...Bang!Suddenly, the door to the private room burst open. Yvonne rushed in, grabbed a bottle and smashed it on Ted's head. Cassie smiled upon hearing that. "I'll tidy up your room for you."She walked away with light steps, every cell in her body leaping with joy, indicating her good mood.Dennis watched his wife with love and indulgence in his eyes. "Look how happy she is."Iris noticed the affection in her father's eyes. She was deeply moved by his love for her mother. In the old days, there were a lot of men who couldn't accept not having a son, so her father's equal regard for daughters was refreshing. It showed how much he loved his wife."My career is on the rise now. In a couple of years, once my career stabilizes, I'll take on fewer cases, and I'll have more time to spend with you," Iris said."Okay," Dennis replied.Iris spent the evening watching TV and chatting with her parents. She listened to Cassie gossip about their relatives.Cassie and Dennis usually went to bed early, but they stayed up late that day because Iris was there. Cassie failed to understand her husband's intentions and remarked, "It's not easy for our daughter to earn money. Do we really need to go on vacation? Since when are you so extravagant?""I..."Before Dennis could explain, Iris set down her cutlery and addressed her mother earnestly. "Mom, I'm happy to spend money on you. Your happiness is what matters to me. If I earn money but don't use it, what's the point? Since Dad wants to go, you should go with him. You both have worked hard all your lives; it's time to enjoy yourselves. Don't worry about money; I'm doing well."She retrieved a bank card from her bag. "There's $150,000 in here."Cassie's eyes widened. "So much?"Iris continued, "I'm an official lawyer now and can earn commissions from cases. You both should spend some money and enjoy yourselves. Don't hold back."Cassie took the card, but didn't put it in her pocket. Despite her love for money, Cassie was reluctant to spend the money that her daughter earned. She returned

Iris chuckled upon hearing that. "Why do you sound like a clingy girlfriend?""Just think of me as your clingy girlfriend then," he replied with a grin.Iris looked at the time."What's the matter? Do you have a date?" Brad asked. She shook her head. "I have an appointment with a witness.""Do you want to go there directly or do you want to go to the law firm first?" he asked.Iris decided they should stop by the law firm first to pick up some stuff. Brad nodded, and they headed to the firm before meeting the witness. The case Iris was handling was complex and couldn't be resolved quickly; it involved multiple parties and factors. Iris was also juggling another case simultaneously. A month later, one case was resolved while another entered its final critical stage, keeping her extremely busy.During this time, Cassie had called her, telling Iris she missed her and asking Iris to visit, but Iris simply didn't have the time. This hectic pace continued for another two months.Sum

Brad arrived at Iris' house precisely at ten past seven. Holding the lunchbox, he rang the doorbell. Iris had just woken up, still in her pajamas, and wondered who could possibly be at the door this early. Sometimes, if she weren't driving, Brad would pick her up at around ten to eight. He wouldn't come this early. When she opened the door, she found him dressed in smart casual attire — a suit jacket, trousers, and white sneakers. In the past, he would wear cool attires like casual pants with a hoodie or a leather jacket, but after accompanying Iris to court on formal occasions, he had adapted his wardrobe considerably. Although he still felt uncomfortable in formal wear, he looked much more mature than before."You're here so early?" Iris asked, surprised."When you're busy, you never eat properly," Brad replied, entering without hesitation. He knew the passcode to her house anyway, so he made himself at home. He walked directly to the dining table. "Go freshen up and change yo

"Are you really going to take on that case, by the way?" Brad asked Iris.Iris asked him back, "Why shouldn't I?""This kind of case could go viral online and attract public scrutiny. I'm worried you'll face backlash. Many people these days lack critical thinking and just follow the crowd," Brad expressed.Iris responded firmly, "I'm a lawyer. I just need to fulfill my duties and do my job well. If I have to weigh the pros and cons before taking on every case..." she turned to him, adding, "What would be the point of doing this job?"Brad fell silent for a moment, then conceded, "Yes, you're right. Don't worry, I'll be at your side."Iris poured cold water on his enthusiasm. "I don't need you to be at my side. You need to go independent.""I don't want to," Brad said, sticking close to her, as if afraid of being left behind."What? Are you just going to cling to me?" she asked."Yes, I am," he chuckled."By the way, I need some fruits but I don't have time to go to the superma

Brad was right, Fiora knew that now. Yet her personality made it difficult for her to apologize and admit her mistakes. When Brad tried to take a sip of water, she snatched the glass from him.Brad looked at her, speechless. Fiora lifted her chin defiantly. "Whether he cares about me or not is none of your business."Brad wanted to ask her if her head had been kicked by a donkey. Instead, he said, "Alright, think what you want. I'm not your brother; I'm not gonna worry about you."Unintentionally, his words elicited a silent reaction from Iris, who lowered her gaze."My brother is overseas dealing with his heartbreak; he doesn't have time to worry about me," Fiora lamented. "I wonder if all the luck in our family has gone to the financial side. Is that why we're so unlucky in everything else? Half a year ago, my brother announced that he had a girlfriend. My mom had even met her and apparently really liked her, but then it all fell apart. My love life is rocky, and my brother's is

Iris said, "Just shut up and order."Brad obediently picked up the menu.Fiora watched the exchange, somewhat shocked at how readily Brad complied with Iris' command. Before this, she and Brad had looked down on each other, and their mutual disdain was evident. She had always thought Brad was too wild and could not be easily controlled, yet here he was, completely under Iris' command. She wondered how Iris had managed to subdue such a wilful young man, especially given Brad's less-than-ideal character.Having spent considerable time with Iris, Brad knew her preferences in food. He ordered the dishes he knew she liked, along with some of his own favorites, before turning to Fiora. "What would you like?""Anything," Fiora replied, prompting Brad to place a random order for her. While they waited for the food, Fiora broached the topic that lingered between them. "About what happened before...""Let's not dwell on the past," Iris interjected. To her, an apology from Fiora held littl

Iris didn't stop. She felt that they weren't acquainted so there was nothing to talk about.Fiora chased after her, tugging on Brad's arm as she ran past him. "Help me out."Brad thus followed behind her, saying, "If she doesn't want to talk to you, don't force her..."Fiora shot him an annoyed glare. Brad was speechless. Why did she glare at him? She was still the same spoiled brat."Wait, I'm not here to be your enemy," Fiora called as she caught up with Iris.Iris had to cross the street, but the continuous flow of traffic forced her to stop, giving Fiora a chance to catch up to her."I just want to apologize," Fiora said.Iris turned back in surprise. Those unexpected words caught her off guard. She did not expect it from Fiora at all.Why would Fiora suddenly apologize to her?"I know Stanley's married now. He married that evil woman," Fiora continued.Learning that Stanley had married Wendy had changed Fiora's opinion of Iris, but it wasn't until last night that she t

Do you need anything?"Jason had seen Iris' message, but she had deleted it before he could listen to it. Concerned about her, had sent Samuel to check if everything was alright since he was abroad.Iris tightened her grip on the doorknob. Something stirred in the bottom of her heart. She tried to sound calm as she said, "I'm fine.""I'll be in the country all month. If you need anything, feel free to call me," Samuel said, handing her his business card. "Here's my contact."Iris hesitated for a moment before taking it."Are you sure you're fine?"
