Mary pov
I have been hiding out in this shelter for 3 days now. No sign of the man that turned into some sort of monster. I have spent the last few days trying to figure it out. My instincts about people are usually bang on, but my instincts were telling me I was safe with that man when clearly that wasn’t the case. Now I am not sure if I can trust myself to know who’s good or bad, and living on the streets on the run that is a very important ability to have.“Why did I ever go into that restaurant “ I mumble to myself not for the first time.“Mary, if you plan to stay another night you need to join group” Kristen says. Kristen is the head of the shelter and has it in her head that if we as a group talk about our lives and problems we can get past them and make better lives for ourselves.. sure like that’s gonna work. I roll my eyes and get up to follow her to group, after all it isn’t like I have anywhere else I can go tonight.“Ok ladies and gentlemen, today I want some new voices to be heard…. James let’s start with you, tell us about you, what got you here, what can we do to help you improve your situation…”Kristen rambles on for a few minutes as I tune her out… she means well and all but she really has no clue.“Umm okay” James says finally. He is maybe 17 looks like he has been addicted to drugs for at least a few years. He is underweight, has clear track marks, is nervous and twitchy and I can tell he wants to do this about as much as I do.“Umm I guess I come from LA, umm life was okay until mom died in a car wreck…… ummm my grandma didn’t want me so I ended up in the system. Ummm some shit happened ““Language please James” Kristen interrupts,“Huh? Oh yeah sorry, umm some stuff happened and well I figured it was easier to go my own way than deal with that umm stuff anymore and well you know, life on the streets is what it is, you do what you gotta do to survive…and here I am.” James awkwardly looks around the room before looking back at the floor embarrassed and uncomfortable. We all knew what life on the streets was like for most kids. Prostitution, drugs, sleeping on park bench’s or in alleys… getting mugged and assaulted, cold, hungry lonely. There was nothing glamorous or fun about it.“Mary, you’re up” Kristen says in her forever perky tone.“Umm can I pass?” I really don’t want to talk about my past… like at all.“If you want to stay, you have to talk it out” Kristen says calmly.Another eye roll from me, “fine; I was born around here I think… my mom died when I was a baby, never knew my dad……in the system since mom died I was like I don’t know 2 maybe 3. I almost got adopted a few times but always ended up getting sent back. One of my foster parents said it’s cause I am a freak, not sure why but I guess maybe she was right because clearly no one wanted me for long.”Kristen nods her head signalling me to continue.“Ugh umm after about 15 foster homes, none of them any good by the way, I decided to do it on my own… I panhandle for money and sleep in shelters when I can. Can’t wait till I am 18 so I can stop running from social services and just find a job and a place of my own. That’s it.”Kristen smiles gently “thank you for sharing.”A few more people get forced to share before Kristen decides it’s enough for the day. After group it is dinner time. We eat and head to our beds (there are literally 40 bunk beds crammed into this old gym) no privacy, but it’s a bed and it’s warm so can’t complain.I am just rolling over to go to sleep when I hear people banging on the main door. (Kristen locks the door after dinner so we don’t end up with too many people in here.)“Excuse me miss” I hear a man at the door say to Kristen as she investigates who is knocking.“Yes can I help you? I am sorry but we are already full for tonight” Kristen says kindly “ if you need shelter maybe try down on 5th they might have some room.”“No, no ma’am” the man at the door continues “my name is Greg and I am looking for someone.”“Excuse me? What do you mean you are looking for someone? Are you the police? Social services? Do you have a warrant to come in here?” Kristen is now nervous and worried for the kids she has staying here. I can hear the worry clear as day in her voice so I know I still have it, so why was I so wrong the other night?Oh did I forget to mention that one of my strange things people didn’t like about me was my ability to accurately read their feelings and intentions without them saying a word? Been able to do it since I was little, not sure why… also not sure why I am so much faster than everyone else, or stronger, or able to get hurt and heal almost instantly… guess maybe I am a freak…“No maam” the guy at the door says patiently,” the girl I am looking for is family and she is lost… I am just looking to find her so she can come back home. We are really worried.” The man says. And just like that the warning bells start going off in my head the man is lying, I can feel it… he is looking for a girl that much is true, but he isn’t her family…. His intentions don’t seem to be bad, but then why lie? I Hope Kristen keeps him out because I want nothing to do with this man at the door.“I am sorry, I don’t give out information about my residents,” Kristen says “if you tell me her name and leave me your name and number I will let her know you are looking for her if I see her.”“Miss I am sorry.” This is a new voice… but a voice I recognize. It is the voice of the man from the other night… oh no is he looking for me? Is he afraid I will go to the police and he wants to get rid of me?“Look, my friend here is telling a bit of a fib you see the other night I ran into this young woman in an alley and there were some men after her… well umm I helped her get away from them but I fear I may have scared her off in the process and I am very worried about her. Please help me find her.” The man pleads with Kristen.I find my self shaking and crying. I can feel the concern from this man… he seems to really be worried, but I saw what he did, I saw what he became…. He is clearly dangerous and somehow messing with my abilities… if Kristen makes him stay out I will have to find a new hiding place tomorrow. This one isn’t safe anymore.“Look sir, I am sorry for your situation, but it is my job to keep my kids safe and I can’t do that by giving out their information. Please understand and be on your way.” With that Kristen shut the door and locked it.I heard the men walking away and heard a car start and drive away, but I spent the rest of the night sitting up on edge waiting for them to come back.Damon’s pov“Come on man, we have been searching for hours.” Greg complains. “Can we please go home and start up again tomorrow?”“Not yet, there are still two more shelters in the area, I have to make sure she isn’t in one of them.” I say quietly. “What makes you think she’s in a shelter? Maybe she has a home and is safe and sound inside it, while we run around shelter to shelter looking for a ghost.” Greg argues.A loud growl escapes me.“She is out here somewhere, I know it and I will find her.” I state firmly. Part of me is trying to convince myself as much as I am Greg, after all, I didn’t even get her name. “Fine, I will go check this one out… wait here, you get too pushy and make people nervous.” Greg gets out of the car and walks towards one of the last shelters that maybe be housing my mate.Greg knocks on the door a few times before a tall thin lady probably in her mid 30”s opens the door just enough to ask what he wants.I overhear Greg telling some ridiculous story that
Mary’s pov“Good morning Mary” Kristen says when I walk out of the bathroom.“Morning “ I mumble. I barely managed to get any sleep and while I know I have to get moving on to a new town as far away as I can get, I would like nothing more than to curl back up and get a few hours sleep first. “Breakfast is in the kitchen, get it while it’s hot.” Kristen smiled and walked into the common room area.I will never understand how she does it. Every day she cooks, counsels, comforts, houses and protects 50-70 kids with a wide variety of problems. She never gets crabby(at least not that I have seen over the last few years when I have stayed here), and she never makes you feel like you have overstayed your welcome. I know if the situation were different, I could probably stay here for a month or more as long as I was willing to participate in group and work on myself. “Stop stalling” I say to myself.I go into the kitchen and eat until my stomach feels like it might bust (might be a few days
Damon’s pov“Come on Greg let’s go,” I am impatient and ready to get back out looking for my mate.“Alright, I’m ready… let’s go.” Greg says. I am sure he has a million other things he can be doing , but he is a good beta and is humouring my need to find my mate.We drive back to the shelter we ended with last night.“Damon, she might not be here you know?” Greg said calmly.“I have to know” I respond. It is morning and people are coming and going from the shelter freely. “Clearly she only locks it down at night so it should be easier to find out if anyone has seen her.” I say hopefully. Greg shrugs his shoulders.I get out of the car and walk up to a young man who looks like he is going through some serious drug withdrawals. “Hey bud, can I ask you a question?” I ask using my most friendly voice. The kid looks like he’s about to run. “Ummm what do you want, I got nothing on me I swear cop…” he says nervously.“Me? A cop?” I laugh wholeheartedly, that has to be a first. “Do I honestl
Mary’s povI walk all day staying off the road as much as I can for fear the man will find me. I don’t understand why he would be looking for me, and I really don’t understand why I get so screwed up when he’s around? My ability goes to shit and a part of me wants to run and jump into his arms.“How friggen crazy is that? He turns into some sort of monster and I want to run and jump into his arms? Apparently I suddenly have some sort of death wish!” I yell to the sky as though someone up there can answer. At around 4:30 that afternoon I come to a small town that consists of maybe 1 store, 1 restaurant, 1 liquor store, and 50 houses… I am so hungry I decide to try my luck at panhandling outside the store. Lucky for me an elderly couple feels sorry for me and hands me a $20 when they are leaving the store. I thank them repeatedly and make my way to the little diner/restaurant.Inside it is dimly lit and looks like it hasn’t seen an update since the 60’s. It has worn red leather booths a
Mary’s povLast night had to be one of my top 3 nights ever. After a delicious dinner of the best bacon cheeseburger, fries with gravy, chocolate milkshake and apple crumble dessert, I helped flora (the old lady told me her mother was a lover of flowers hence the name). We cleaned up the diner, she introduced me to the cook (her nephew) Phil, a 48 year old man who came to work at the family run diner straight out of high school and never left. Flora found me some clothes that fit reasonably well and once I was changed she took all my dirty clothes (my whole 3 outfits) and washed them for me while showing me how to operate the machine so I could do it myself next time. She then showed me how to work the dishwasher, and the milkshake machine. The “dinner crowd” came in ( maybe 10 people, mostly older couples), and I helped flora take orders and deliver orders to the tables. By the end of the night I was tired, but flying high having met so many people, and learned so many new things.
Damon’s pov“How can no one find her? What did she do vanish off the face of the planet?” I rant loudly while pacing in my office.“Boss, we have so many people out looking, too many really.” Greg grumbles.“It has been 3 months, and no sign of her? And you want me to believe they are really looking?” Zed lets out a loud growl in frustration. “We have scouts posted night and day outside the shelter she was last at in case she comes back, we have young ones pretending to be homeless, searching all the other area shelters. We have all our pack looking out for her even though doing so leaves our boundaries weakened. I am not sure what else you want us to do.” Greg says firmly.I know he is right, well the sane part of my brain knows it, but it doesn’t matter..”you can find her!” I rage and clear the papers off my desk with one arm. Greg shakes his head and walks out knowing there is no reasoning with me right now.“Cousin, your beta is not wrong.” My closest cousin Annabeth says calmly
Mary’s povIt’s been 6 months since the incident in the alley. As much as it scared me, it also led me here. The last few months have been the best of my life. I really have a home here. The people of this small town have welcomed me with open arms and I have slowly made the bunkhouse my home. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t make a fortune working here, but free room and board, a small salary and I get to keep my tips now that I have gotten good enough to serve tables by myself.Flora and Phil have been so good to me, they never press to much about my past and have taught me how to earn my own way. Tomorrow Phil is taking me into the city with him to get the supplies for the next week. I am excited to take the opportunity to buy some new clothes out of the money I have been saving. I also want to get flora something to say thanks.I follow the last customer of the night to the door, and once they leave I lock the door and turn off the open sign.“Hey kiddo, help me clean up would ya?” P
Damon’s povI found her. I can’t believe it. Her I was shopping for a birthday gift for my beta and boom there she is. My first instinct is to run up to her, but then I remember she ran away from me last time. I need to come up with a plan so I don’t lose her again. Suddenly she whips her head around and I barely have time to duck behind a display in the store so she doesn’t see me.“Damn it, that was close.” I mumble.I take out my phone and carefully peek back out around to where she stands. I take a picture of her. It’s only a side view from where I stand but better than nothing. I call my beta. “Greg,” I whisper when he answers “ she’s here, I found her. At the mall, get over here right now. We have to see where she goes and we can’t lose her again.” “Boss? Why you whispering? I can hardly hear you.” Greg responds. “Get over her now, I found her.” I say a bit louder. “Okay boss on my way…. Where are you?” Greg says. I can hear the sound of him grabbing his keys as he rushes
After dinner Damon led Mary out of the dining room. They went down the hall to his office. Once inside Damon shut the door. He walked over to where Mary was standing and took her face in his hands. He tilted her face up and leaned down and kissed her. It was Mary’s first real kiss. It took the breath right out of her. His lips were soft yet firm, and sweet. He slid his tongue into her mouth and she nervously kissed him back. She felt fireworks going off all over her body as he pulled her closer to him. She put her arms around his neck and grabbed a handful of his beautiful hair.‘What am I doing? I barely know him?’ She thought briefly. Her desire to be near him and be touched by him won out over any reservations she had. Damon broke the kiss and began kissing her neck making Mary moan. He gently bit her neck right above her collarbone. “That is where is will mark you” he growled making Mary wet between her legs. She was floored by her body’s reaction to this man. She had never felt
The dining room was enormous. It was more like a ballroom or large restaurant than a regular dining room. Damon led Mary to the front of the room where there was a long table that overlooked the rest of the room. Damon and Mary sat at the middle of the table. A few minutes later Greg came in and sat beside Damon. Mary watched as people slowed came in and sat down at tables. Some of the faces looked familiar from the meeting a short while ago, some were new faces. People spoke among themselves and some greeted each other upon arrival. This was truly a close knit community and Mary was equally impressed and nervous. How was she going to fit in with people who have known each other their whole lives. Damon silently reached over and held Mary’s hand. Mary laughed to herself remembering that he could feel her nervousness. She looked at him as he spoke to Greg. He was a beautiful man. His strong features, his thick rich perfect hair. Skin looked smooth and soft. She couldn’t believe som
As they enter the double doors of the hall Damon looks at Mary. “You ready to meet the pack?”“Meet the pack? Now?” Mary asked nervously.“It will be fine, I will be with you the whole time.” Damon took Mary’s hand and led her into a large room full of people. They walked hand in hand up to the front of the room, climbed the few steps to the stage and went to the center of the stage. “Good day, goddess bless you.” Damon said calmly and kindly.“Goddess be with you.” The pack returned in unison.“I want to introduce you to my mate, your future Luna, Mary.” Damon said with pride pulling Mary as close to him as he could. Mary looked around the room. Some people were smiling and Mary could feel their instant acceptance of her…. But there were a few who did not seem at all happy with her presence beside the alpha. A few of them radiated anger and if looks could kill Mary would be dead. Mary swallowed hard and mustered as much courage as she could. •Hi everyone, nice to meet you.” She sa
Damon leads Mary out the front door and they turn right. They follow a beautifully landscaped pathway which leads them to a street. Mary looks up and down the street and sees beautiful homes all well maintained… “not one is overgrown or run down!” Mary marvels.“We pride ourselves on ensuring our home is welcoming, clean and maintained. Littering is unacceptable and letting your house fall into disrepair is as well. We are a community and if one needs help with upkeep or repair all they have to do is ask, so there is no excuse for letting things go.” Damon says this with such pride and love, Mary can see and feel his love for his community and people. Her respect for him grows more and more.As they walk down the street passing homes, they pass by people that love in the community. Damon introduces them as they go, but Mary knows she will never remember all the names. “Don’t worry little love,” Damon whispers to her “the names will come with time, no one expects you to remember them
After Mary”s things were all put away she followed Sarah down stairs. The house was so big it was more like a palace. As they walked down the stairs Sarah pointed out where her room was.“If you need me anytime, you just come knock on my door ok? Sarah said kindly.Mary nodded her head happy to have a friend. And she could feel it. Sarah truly wanted to be her friend. Mary felt like she was walking on clouds she was so excited. They continued down to the main floor where Sarah took Mary down a hallway. They passed set of double doors that Sarah explained housed the library. They passed a glass wall where she could clearly see an enormous gym on the other side of the glass. There were lots of people in there so Mary quickly walked by trying not to attract any attention. They then came up to a door near the end of the hall. Sarah knocked on the door and then opened it.“Alpha, we are here.” Sarah said loudly. What does she mean alpha? What the heck is an alpha? Mary thought to herself.
Greg drove for what felt like hours. Mary stared out the window trying to keep track of exactly what roads they took, just in case.Damon watched Mary spellbound.“You are gonna love the pack.” Greg offered. He smiled in the rear view mirror. Mary looked and briefly smiled back. She didn’t know what to think or say. Her head was spinning and going a million miles at a time. ‘What am I doing? Why am I agreeing to this? Am I crazy? I don’t even know these people…they could be serial killers for all I know, and here I am willingly getting in a car with them, packing up my only home and leaving with them!’Greg finally turns a corner and heads down a long driveway. “We are here.” Damon says calmly. Mary watches as they pull up to the biggest house she has ever seen. As soon as the car stops the door is opened by a young girl. “Welcome home alpha, beta.” The girl says happily. She looks at Mary and smiles. “Hi! My name is Sarah. Welcome to the pack. Can I show you to your room?” Sarah
“I will come with you, but I have to leave flora and Phil a note at very least. I owe them that much and more for everything they have done for me.” Mary says to Damon.“You write them a note and pack your things. I will call the pack house and have a room made up for you. Greg is waiting in the car I will get him and he can help load your stuff in the trunk.” Damon smiles and puts his hand on Mary’s shoulder.“Pack my stuff? But I can’t just leave for good…this is my home.” Mary feels panic setting in at the thought of abandoning the wonderful people who took her in and treated her so well.“Love, I know you feel like you owe these people, and maybe you do, but I promise you, when you first turn it is going to be painful and you do not want them around for that. You are doing them a favour. Once you adjust, if you want to come back, it will be up to you, but I promise you, I will make sure they have help and won’t hurt for money for all they have done for my mate.”Mary knew he was b
Mary came to and found herself lying on her bed.“Take it slow” Damon said softly “you almost hit your head.” Mary looked at Damon. ‘He looks confused!, what does he have to be confused about?’ She thought.“What? Why do you look confused? Excuse me if I haven’t seen men turn into wolves before, excuse me for not knowing that there are things out there that look human but are actually animals in disguise. How in the heck was I supposed know that?” Mary huffed angrily.Damon tilted his head slightly,” not just wolves you know.” “What? Why do you mean not just wolves? What else is there?” Mary looked at Damon as though he was truly insane.“Well vampires, witches, warlocks and elves… mind you most of them are almost extinct except for those damn vampires… those ones just multiply quicker than we can exterminate them.”Mary laughed and laughed. “Oh and my fairy-godmother is going to swoop in and turn me into a princess to right?” She shook her head… ‘he really must be crazy” she thought
Mary brings the two cups of tea to the table and sits down across from Damon. “Okay, I am going to tell you the truth, but I need you to please, please listen to the whole story and try your absolute hardest to keep an open mind.” Damon says looking Mary in the eyes trying to get a read on what she’s thinking.Mary nods her head in agreement. “Okay, go ahead.” “I wasn’t lying when I said I turned into a wolf… I do. It”s not like you think though. My wolf is always wake inside me and sometimes I let him come forth. The night those guys were after you, I honestly just wanted to protect you… I only reacted when they attacked. If they had of just run away I would never have hurt them. There are rules, and wolves are not allowed to attack humans… I could get my pack in massive trouble if I did that.”“Your pack?”Mary interrupted “ so there are more of you?”“Yes my pack, and yes there are many more like me… there are many packs. Truth be told, between the 4 packs in the surrounding areas
