Chapter Three

last update Last Updated: 2024-11-13 03:13:32

The room was silent, except for the ground where the man with the hole in his body lay in his pool of blood.

“What the fuck did you do?” came my brother's voice, sharp and thunderous.

I flinched, taking a step backward. “I-I d-didn’t do anything, I swear,” I stammered, fear engulfing my body as Gideon edged closer to me, the other men behind him.

They didn't look happy with whatever I had done to their comrade.

“"What was that fucking thing that came out of your hands?” Gideon spat, moving warily towards me and giving a careful glance at my hands in front of me.

My breaths came out quick as my chest rose and fell in panic. I let out a silent curse. There was no way these men were going to allow me to live, not after what I did to their man.

I gave a hurried glance to the now dead man on the floor and back to my hands.

Unless…

A thought went through me.

I raised my tied hands towards them, pointing my palms at them. “Don't take one step closer or you'll be like Hulk Man there on the floor.”

They halted their steps. Satisfaction coursed through me at the slight widening of my brother's eyes.

“Do not take any step closer or so help me goddess, I will not hesitate,” I said through gritted teeth.

On the outside, I was calm and collected, but inside, I was terrified of this new energy that was suddenly surging within me, beckoning me to keep going.

Gideon threw me a death glare. “You wouldn't dare, Selena. You wouldn't dare hurt your brother.”

I let out a bitter laugh. “I have endured countless hits and beatings from you. Nights and days, I would be terrified of even daring to breathe out loud as I lived.” I scrunched my face. “If you'd even call that living. And now, for some reason, you think I won't hurt you, especially when you very clearly want to kill me?” My voice rose a few decibels higher.

“Put your hands down, and I won't kill you.” He took a step closer.

That was the wrong move because the crimson light surged out of my hands again, hitting the floor just inches away from his feet.

He and the other men scrambled backward, letting out strings of curses. “WHAT THE FUCK, SELENA?”

I blinked vigorously, my breath coming out quick.

Taking advantage of the wide distance now between me and them, I didn't think; I just ran to the door, bolting out and making my escape from the people who were definitely going to kill me if they laid their hands on me.

****

All day I ran. The scorching afternoon sun did not help ease the tension I felt as it followed me discreetly through the streets and between buildings.

And the amazing thing?

I was not tired. Not one bit.

“THERE SHE IS. GET HER!” It was one of the men who was hot on my trail.

My legs kicked faster, and my blood pumped with adrenaline as I crossed the tarred road, ignoring the green light on the traffic light. I let out a curse as I narrowly missed a car that zoomed dangerously close to me, halting to regain my balance before running into the nearby bushes that led to the forest.

I heard their curses in the distance. “Fuck, how is she so fast?” It was mixed with the sounds of their thunderous steps as they pursued me from behind.

The smell of earth was stronger as the wind whipped through my thick black hair. After passing through trees and caves, I was sure I had lost them when I didn't hear any sounds of footsteps behind me anymore.

I ran into a cave that was hidden beneath thick bushes, taking refuge in the coolness of the earth that it was made of.

My heart thumped loudly in my ears as I let my hand run through my hair, pacing back and forth. I was fucked.

I held my hands up. They were now loose from the rope. The rope had snapped when I used a strength I never knew I had to free myself.

What in the goddess's name was going on with me? My eyes were wide as I studied my arms. How do I have such powers… such strength?

The gem on my neck burned against my skin, and I let out a scream, immediately removing the necklace and holding it away from my body.

It shone so brightly in the dark cave that the entire space was covered in a sea-green light.

My eyes went wide as I saw the images that the gem displayed. It was that woman again, the one who seemed to be the star in my dreams. I tilted my head as I took a closer look.

The next image showed a blonde-haired man, and for some reason, his empty eyes elicited an unknown fear that prickled on my skin. He was the one who had betrayed the woman.

In an instant, the images stopped, and the cave was dark again.

I looked around in bewilderment. What did this mean? Why were the people who appeared in my dreams showing up in the gemstone?

I brought the stone closer to my face. “What are you telling me?” I whispered as I let my eyes study every inch of its edge.

When I realized that staring at it wasn't going to get me any answers, I put the necklace back on my neck.

Leaning against the wall of the cave, I sat on the hard ground, folding my legs as I did.

What the hell was I going to do now?

I didn't know anyone I could run to or any safe place I could stay for the time being. So, I waited until the evening came, when I was certain I would be safer and it would be harder for my brother and those men to find me.

The crescent moon was finally up in the sky, and with a renewed boldness, I stepped back into the forest. The sound of crickets followed as I moved, squinting my eyes as I went deeper and deeper into the heart of the forest.

One foot after the other, I moved, not noticing the ditch that was just in front of me.

Until I fell into it.

I was fighting to keep my hold tight on the stick.“HELP!” I yelled, hoping someone was out there and would be willing to help me. “SOMEBODY HELP ME!” I yelled again. The strain between the stick and my hand was beginning to weaken, and I said a silent prayer to the moon goddess.A tear dropped from my cheek at the thought of my body colliding with the hard ground. A shiver of fear ran through me, and I raised my voice louder. “SOMEBODY, HELP ME!”It was only silence that responded back to me as I dangled. KAI'S POVThe air was thick with the fresh scent of blood and the sharp sense of fear. But of all things I could focus on, my attention fully was on her.Her. The dashing she-wolf who had just fought men twice her size like a storm. I had compared her to a storm because of how wild, fierce, and unstoppable she had been effortlessly. She was now standing a few feet away, her chest heaving and puffing as she struggled to catch her breath. Her eyes were blazing while a crimson light still faintly glowed at her fingertips. Her name was Selena Ashford, and she was just like a puzzle being presented to me—delicate and deadly, vulnerable yet untouchable, all at the same time.At such a moment, I should have been focused on the battle, on the bodies lying at our feet, and the threat that might be lingering in the area, but my thoughts were fixed to her. I had never seen anyone—man or woman. I had seen no one fight with such immense power, and such control. She was dangerous, and yet her ha

SELENA’S POVThe pack territory was nothing like I had imagined.Rogues were supposed to live in filthiness, in tattered camps with the lingering scent of death and desperation hanging about in the atmosphere. But this place—this hidden haven—was something else entirely. The forest opened to reveal a sprawling village nestled in a valley. Neat, and well-maintained houses arranged on the winding paths, their wooden exteriors blending harmoniously with the surrounding trees. The air smelled of pine and fresh earth, not the stench of decay I had expected. The people—wolves, I reminded myself—moved about with purpose, their faces curious but not too unkind. It was... beautiful.Kai led me down a narrow path, his broad figure cutting through the crowd with ease. His presence was majestic, commanding, and wherever he passed, people bowed their heads in respect, murmuring greetings that spoke of both reverence and admiration.“Alpha.”The title followed him like a shadow, spoken with awe fro

SELENA’S POVI remember now.I remember every fucking details now. Every memory, every ounce of betrayal, every excruciating pain—I remembered it all. I recall being Irene Blackthorn. That was who I was, who I had been before the silver knife severed my life. And the one who sent it through me was the man I had once called my mate. He was Damon Nightshade. His icy blue eyes flashed in my mind, the same ones I once used to see love in were now poisoned with hatred. He had stabbed me with no hesitation, no remorse at all.And Elara. The witch. She had helped him. I could clearly hear her twisted smile resounding in my ears, her dark magic... they had both torn me apart. But the physical pain I had felt then was nothing compared to the torment of knowing that the love I had offered to Damon so freely had been nothing but a weapon in his hand.I gasped for breath, clutching the blanket around me like it could protect me from the torment surging in my veins. The warmth of the room contras

KAI’S POVThe moon was full and high in the sky, casting a soft, silvery light into my room through the narrow opening between my black curtains. It was very late in the night, yet sleep eluded me. Everytime I closed my eyes, she was right there—messing with my mind. Selena had taken every space in my head. I couldn't avoid thinking about the rogue we had welcomed into the pack tonight. She was just like a mystery, with a fearless exterior but a pitiful past. Her stormy blue eyes hinted at secrets, and I was determined to understand her, even if it meant getting hurt in the process. When it was finally the dawn of a new day. Immediately the sun roze from where it usually hid from the moon, I found myself standing outside her cabin, the scent of pine and frost sharp in the morning air. My wolf stirred restlessly within me, a low growl vibrating through my chest. He was curious—no, obsessed—with her. It was unlike him to be so drawn to anyone so quickly. He wanted to be near her, to w

SELENA’S POVMy muscles ached all over from the brutal morning’s training. I really didn’t get why he was training me even when I never asked for it. I could get it well on my own, I knew better than to trust anyone again. But Kai was relentless, and despite my irritation, I couldn’t deny the flicker of admiration I felt for his dedication. He pushed me harder than anyone ever had, forcing me to bring out the strength within me I barely knew existed. Yet the lingering tension between us was suffocating.I clenched my fists, trying to steady my breath. The memory of Kai pinning me against the tree, his body pressed close to mine, replayed in my mind. My pulse quickened at the thought. ‘Get a grip, Selena’. He was dangerous—too dangerous—and I couldn’t afford to let myself be drawn to him. I wasn’t here to make connections. I was here to survive.Kai finally came back after going to get water for both of us. After he passed on the water container to me and I skipped from it, he didn’t s

Now I felt distant from her—too far to reach, too quiet to bear. I tried to tell myself it didn’t matter. I didn’t need her. I didn’t need anyone, in fact. But the lie tasted bitter.‘Are you angry?’ I pressed further, trying to coax her as my thoughts became softer now. ‘Or are you just done with me?’But there was still no reply from her.I clenched my jaw, forcing my body to stay upright despite the subtle pain from Kai’s relentless training, two days back. SELENA’S POVI should have ran away after the first fault trial, I should. The fire made a noise through the trees I had burnt, and though the scent of burning wood was thick in the air—almost choking—my attention was fixed on the shadow emerging from within.Yes, it turned out to be Silas who stepped out from the smoke, untouched with his coat blowing behind him making him look like an agent of darkness. His face was scarily calm, too calm but the gleam in his eyes said something else—something like curiosity and hunger.“So,” his velvety voice came out. “You are indeed special.”I clenched my fists, trying to prepare more power to my fingertips, but Celestia’s energy was fading fast. She cowered within me, the usual strength I relied on was nowhere to be found. ‘You can't do this to me now, Celestia!’ I yelled at her, but she only made sad sounds. My hands trembled as I tried to summon more crimson energy, but it showed only weakly like a dying flame.“Go on,” Silas said, his tone

SELENA’S POVI stood on the balcony of the Alpha’s quarters, my hands resting on the curve of my swollen belly as the cool breeze kissed my skin. I watched the moon hanging brightly in the night sky, casting a soft silver glow over the Silvermoon pack.I couldn’t sleep—not with the way my wolf kept pacing anxiously in my head and my mate snoring softly beside me. Celestia, as restless as ever, kept nudging me with her thoughts. ‘You need to sit down before you tip over.’ She suggested like she was a fairy godmother.‘I’m fine,’ I shot back, but I wasn’t even really convinced. My back ached all over, my feet were swollen, and this baby—our baby—was practically trying to kick his way out. I glanced behind me, smiling at the sight of Kai sprawled out on the bed. His dark hair was a mess, and his bare chest rose and fell steadily with each breath. My Alpha. My mate. And soon-to-be dad. The thought sent a ripple of excitement and fear through me. What if I messed this up? What if I w

  • Moon Fire Reborn    CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHT

SELENA’S POVRenn sat on the grass floor with his back against the wall. His knees were bent to meet his chest and his elbows rested on them like the weight of the world was pressing down on his shoulders. And honestly? It probably was. I lowered myself beside him so we could be at the same height, and immediately I sat, I felt the cool floor press against my thighs through the thin material of my dress. Kai didn’t look at me right away, but I waited for him to.. I knew better than to rush someone who was grieving. “Hey.” My voice was carefully soft. “You okay?” He scoffed. “Do I look okay?” “Fair point.” I picked at a loose thread on my sleeve, letting the silence stretch just long enough before I added, “But you do look better than you did five minutes ago. That's a huge progress, right?” Renn didn’t laugh, but the corner of his mouth twitched slightly. “You’re trying too hard.” “Yeah, well, it’s what I do.” I nudged his shoulder with mine. “Someone’s gotta keep you from

KAI’S POVI wasn’t drunk. I wasn't even close to being drunk. But I kind of wished I was—because dealing with Renn right now? Yeah, it was the kind of emotional wreckage I was facing at the moment that made me crave something strong enough to burn down the ache.“Renn,” I said softly, crouching beside him as he slumped against the back wall of the hall. His eyes had red rims around them, his shirt was wrinkled, and his knuckles were bruised probably from punching something he shouldn’t have. Or someone. With Renn, you could never tell.He wiped at his face, but it didn’t help much. “Don’t look at me like that.”“Like what?”“Like I’m pathetic.”“I’m not,” I said, even though he kind of was. “I’m looking at you like you’re a guy who’s hurting. Big difference.”He laughed, but it came out sharp and bitter. “You don’t get it, Kai. You don’t get any of this.”I leaned against the wall beside him, giving him space but not enough to let him feel alone. “So explain it to me.”He turned his

SELENA’S POVDamn it, I was losing my mind. Okay, maybe not in the literal sense, but it sure felt like it. The party was in full swing mode. There were lights illuminating the hall, people dancing carelessly, music vibrating through the ground, and voices blending into a chaotic hum of laughter and chatter. Wolves from every corner of the Silver moon territory were here, dressed to impress, smiling like tonight held all their dreams wrapped up in glitter ribbons. And maybe it did. Because tonight wasn’t just a random party—It was ‘the’ party. The one where celestial bonds would be sealed, mates would be chosen, and vows would be made under the blessing of the Moon Goddess. Also—this party was the one where I would officially be announced as Kai’s… Luna. No pressure, right? I sat on the throne beside Kai, my back so straight it was probably illegal. The chair was huge, carved from dark wood and draped in silver silk that looked like moonlight had been woven into it. It

SELENA’S POVI had no idea what I was doing.Okay, that was a lie.I knew exactly what I was doing. I was taking a risk—no, scratch that—I was diving with my head first into something that could either shatter me or make me whole. And yet, with Kai sitting across from me, his hand holding mine and his eyes pulling me so deep into his world, I couldn’t make myself care about the side effects of all of this. Not when he looked at me like this. Not when his touch made me have goosebumps all over my skin like the air before a storm.I swallowed nothing, staring at the sharp lines of his jaw, the way the moonlight kissed his cheekbones and made his eyes glow brightly. Kai wasn’t perfect. Hell, he wasn’t even close, no one was. But there was something about his imperfections, I meant his invincible scars, his family history, that made me feel safe. And maybe that was dangerous, but I didn’t care.I shouldn't even care about it tonight.“Say it again,” I whispered. His brows furrowed. “Say w

  • Moon Fire Reborn    CHAPTER NINETY-FOUR

KAI’S POVThe Silvermoon Pack’s village square was jam-packed with people, and for once, I was grateful it wasn’t for a fight. They all stood shoulder to shoulder, my rogues and Silvermoon wolves blending into one ocean of tired faces. Their clothes were stained, some with dirt, others with dried blood, but despite the wreckage the war had left behind, there was something else in the air that was heavier than exhaustion.I sensed hope.I didn’t know what the hell to do with that, though.I stepped forward, clearing my throat to address them all. “First of all—” My voice cracked, and I internally shook my head. ‘Great start, Alpha,’ Nyx mocked. ‘Real inspiring.’I tried again, ignoring him. “First of all,” I said, louder this time, “we won.”That got their attention. The werewolves straightened their backs. Some of them raised their heads higher. I wasn’t sure if it was pride or disbelief that shimmered in their eyes, but it didn’t matter. They were listening.“We won,” I repeated, my

SELENA'S POVWe buried Yasmine under the shade of an ancient oak tree. The shaman said it was the closest spot to the goddess’s light—whatever that meant. I didn’t question his words at all. Not when Renn looked like he was one wrong word away from losing his mind completely. He stood by her grave, silent and pale the whole time, his hands shaking as he placed a white lily on the mound of fresh loamy soil. The rest of us stood back, giving him space to mourn his mate because It didn’t feel right to interrupt his grieving moment, but at the same time, I wanted to say something, or anything to make it better.I didn’t, though.Because nothing would ever make him feel better. The shaman, the old man with silver braids and piercing green eyes, hovered around nearby. His staff sank slightly into the ground as he stepped forward, clearing his throat before he spoke. “Renn,” he said softly, “is there anything else you wish to ask before we seal her spirit’s path?”He didn’t answer at first.

  • Moon Fire Reborn    CHAPTER NINETY-TWO

SELENA'S POVI didn’t even know what to feel now that the war was finally over. The battlefield that had once vibrated with screams, roars, and explosions of magic, was now eerily silent. It was too silent. The atmosphere now felt heavier than it should. Every air that I inhaled was thick with the scent of smoke, blood, and something more worse. Grief took over the whole atmosphere.I turned around slowly, my boots sinking into the mud that had mixed with blood and shattered remains of dark spells. My heart pounded in my chest as my gaze swept over the entire battlefield. Bodies laid scattered across the ground, some were our friends, and some foes, but they were all lifeless. I came to the conclusion that this wasn't a victory—it was survival. And barely that because we were the only three people that survived. All other soldiers, who were probably husbands and fathers, had all laid their lives down for me.I saw Renn on his knees, hunched over Yasmine’s pale and broken body like he

NARRATEDDamon didn’t see it coming at all.His aim was at her because one moment Selena had turned her back, her focus now locked on Elara. But in the next moment, when he lunged forward like an unchained beast with desperation burning in his eyes, Kai met him with a faster energy.Their bodies collided with a bone-crunching impact, and the ground made a thud sound beneath their weights. Damon roared, his dark magic losing its control within him, but Kai met him blow for blow, his claws ripping through Damon's fur and flesh like they were paper.“You’re done!” Kai growled angrily, his voice coming out with a furious thone as he grinded his teeth against each other.Damon grinned despite the blood dripping from his mouth. “Not yet.”He shoved Kai off him, sending him flying backwards, but Kai was already moving again. His wolf surged forward, becoming wild as it slammed into Damon before he could fully recover.Selena turned at the direction of the scuffling sound, her chest tightenin
