XAVIER'S POV

I strode into the office, my steps purposeful and measured. The power coursing through each cell in my body seemed to hum off me like an uncontrollable energy source. The moment I strode through the threshold, heads turned-secretaries, junior executives, all of them. Their gazes clung to me, whispers surely circulating behind my back, but I didn't care. Their petty thoughts were irrelevant. Not today.

Claudia had overplayed her hand.

And she was going to find out what happens when one tries to outplay me.

The instant I stepped into my office, her scent, her energy, hit me-nervous. She paced by the window, her back to me. I didn't need to see her face to know she was scared. Good.

I silently shut the door, the sharp click of the lock turning her to ice. It was then that she slowly turned around, and the instant our eyes met, her fear became palpable. Stiffening from head to toe, she parted her lips to say something- some weak defense, no doubt. I could almost smell the re

Ella's POVThe air felt heavy today-that kind where everything weighs one down and the whole world has come to a standstill. I sat on the couch, my arms loosely hugging Ivy, nestled against me, with her tiny frame so innocent and warm. Her laughter echoed through the room as Cocomelon played from the TV, bright colors and songs lighting up the screen. She pointed to the screen, giggling, "Mommy, look! JJ!"But I really wasn't there. My mind was elsewhere, clouded by that whirlwind of emotions spinning inside me, chaotic pieces I couldn't control, let alone make sense of.This just wasn't supposed to be this hard. The coolness of the ring on my finger touched my skin like a cold reminder of a lie that I had committed to. A contract, a deal-what was the meaning of all that? Had Xavier ever seen me-really seen me-beyond the terms and conditions of this mess that we so called a marriage?"Mommy, JJ!Ivy's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. "Yes, sweetheart, I see him," I said, forcing a

Ella's POVThe silence in the car was suffocating, save the soft hum of the motor and Ivy's occasional babbles from the backseat. I couldn't look at her, not yet. I had to keep my thoughts straight, had to remind myself of the facts.Three months. Three months of pretending this was something it wasn't. The contract had been clear-stay at my place for three months, keep up appearances, and then we'd move into his mansion. That's all it was, a deal. And now it was over.I tried telling myself I could keep things neutral-keep things at room temperature between us. No warmth, no heat, no emotion. Xavier was just a man I had agreed to marry for the sake of convenience, for Ivy's future. Nothing more. I really needed to stop pretending it was something else, that this was something real. But it still ached, an ache heavy in my chest, twisting with every breath I took. It wasn't supposed to hurt this badly, I kept reminding myself. It wasn't supposed to feel so personal. I knew what I was g

Xavier's POVThe harsh glow of the studio light felt like a spotlight on my every flaw. So many times, I have done these interviews; each and every time, I continued to chip away into my façade so carefully constructed. Today wasn't any different. The scandal that shook the soil on which I stood continued to buzz around me, a storm I couldn't outrun. It was relentless, just like the humming of a fly that refused to be swatted away."Xavier," the voice of the host cut into my daydream. "What would you like to say to the allegations concerning your family's business dealings?"I took a deep breath, forcing a smile that really felt more like a grimace. "Those allegations are baseless. I've worked hard to establish my own reputation, separate from my family's past. I assure you, my focus is on the future, not the mistakes of the past."The words came, practiced and polished, easily rolling off my tongue. Inside, though, I was a tempest-a maelstrom of emotions with every question asked, t

ELLA'S POV Stepping into Xavier's mansion was like stepping into a world too big, too overwhelming for my life. The sheer scale of it all made my heart pound in my chest. As the door closed behind me, the silence inside pressed in against my ears, a contrast to the noisy thoughts racing in my head. Ivy tugged on my hand, her innocent eyes wide with wonder at all the grandeur surrounding us.It was cool, the air crisp-each breath a thoroughly conditioned perfect simulation-but it did little to quash the bubbling unease in my stomach. The taut smiles of the staff greeted us, no more than courteous and rehearsed, their words soft and formal. A woman clearly used to such introductions stepped forward, offering to take me to my room. She strode ahead down the hall, Ivy and I trailing until the luxury of the mansion seemed to swallow us whole. When we finally reached my room-no, my suite-I was literally out of breath for a second. Large was an understatement: a room fit for royalty, with a

ELLA'S POV"Don't let this get to you, Ella." The president's face twisted into a mask of pure concern. His words reverberated at the back of my mind as I nodded my head slowly, my eyes scanning his for any hint of emotions and surprisingly, I met the soft glints of compassion in his eyes.Rising from the chair I was sitting on, I turned and headed out of the room with my head wrapped in thoughts. Could Xavier really be telling the truth? If yes, would I be able to give him my heart this time around? As I glided deeper into the horizon of the hallways, my heartbeat raced harder as I ran my fingers through my dress. Stopping in front of the elevator, I stretched taut my fingers and pressed the button causing the automated doors pull apart. The elevator ride was a matter of seconds before I finally arrived at my floor which was on the secondth. The hallways were quiet— save for the soft clip-clap of my heels against the bronze tiled floors. I made a stop at Ivy's room and opened to the

XAVIER'S POVThe sharp ray of sunlight flared my eyelids as I pulled from sleep, the softly smell of Ella running into my nostrils. Last night was a blast of emotions, emotions I was happy I finally let out.I loved Ella, deeply. And the sight of her moody stroke a sharp jolt of pain in me. That goddamn scandal had caused a rift in my relationship with her and it hurt to watch her there, so sexy, refusing to let off her guards. After putting Ivy to sleep, I raced my way to the room only to find the door ajar and no sign of Ella in the room. I made my way only to see her drinking champagne by the balcony. Her milky blonde curls framed the edges of her face, waves cascading all the way to her waist. The moonlight washed her beautiful features, her soft blue eyes and her attractive curvy body. I felt a wave trudge through me at that instant, desire racing endlessly in my veins as I let my gaze wonder her hungrily. If anything, I wanted to claim her and make every bastard around here kn

ELLA'S POV The sharp smell of the substance in the cup I was holding reeked it's way into my nostrils. I let out a choked cough as I passed it back to the maid in front of me. She was obviously feeling the same way as I was, confusion was boldly written on both of our faces."I can't drink that," I said giving up as I passed the cup back to her. I watched the corners of her lips pull apart as she replied, "Master Xavier had put a lot of effort in making the drink, he would be hurt if he found out you didn't take it."Her words shook the air as my mind flashed back to Xavier. He was a lot of things, cold, arrogant, bossy. But now actually romantic and caring. I was taken aback by the warmth of her words. Xavier was never the type to let his emotions get the best of him, but last night seemed different. His words to me, they sounded pure, genuine. Like a grave promise I knew he would keep. The thought of his effort flashed back into my mind and I steadied myself before reaching out and

ELLA'S POVMy curls now draped over my view as I bent my head slowly, dead in tracks. Raising my gaze slowly, I was shocked to find the figure of a lady in a purple mermaid gown. She looked fierce— not in the heroic way but kinda scary. Her face was well adorned with makeup, her cheekbones evenly highlighted. Her hair was the neatest I had ever seen. This woman— whoever she was, was classy. She possessed an air of authority that braced my anxiety. Every detail I could gather about her screamed wealth and power, her face fixed in a frown that indicated clear displeasure. Her skin glowed under the light of the chandelier, her hair braided in a chignon. She was obviously another member of Xavier's family, I could tell, like an aunt or a sister maybe. She was seated on the edge of the long breakfast table, her fingers curled against the fork plucked on vegetables on her plate. But something was different— she didn't possess the same green eye color as the rest of all the McKinney family

XAVIER'S POV I woke up to the soft warmth of Ella’s body curled against mine. For a rare moment, I allowed myself to enjoy the peace. The curve of her body against mine, the way her breathing remained steady—it filled me with calmness. But duty never slept, and neither could I.For a fleeting moment, time seemed to slow, allowing me to simply exist in the tranquillity of her presence. The delicate scent of her lavender shampoo clung to her dark hair, a familiar and soothing aroma that filled my senses. I almost didn't want to get up from her side, knowing she might be the only semblance of calmness in my life today, but I had to.Placing a kiss on her hair, I carefully untangled myself from her and slid out of bed. LUCAS'S POV The neon glow of the city cast long shadows as I watched her disappear into the night. My cigarette burned between my fingers, smoke curling into the air like ghosts of the past. I didn’t move until she was completely out of sight. Only then did I snap my fingers as a signal.A huge tall figure emerged from the darkness, stepping under the pale streetlight. Matteo. He had been an old soldier from back when I was still young —one of the few old ones still breathing. He wasn’t a man of many words, but he was very useful. He was my eyes on the streets, my major source of information, and not for once had he ever been wrong.“Who’s running things now?” I asked, exhaling smoke as I observed his expression.Matteo’s face was lined with years of bloodshed, his dark eyes unreadable. “No one knows, boss. There's a man—he’s got a scorpion tattoo inked onto the back of his hand. Rumours have it that he might be the one.”That gave me pause. "A scorpion?"He nodded once. "We haven’t

MADAME BROWNE'S POV I sat before the gilded vanity in my dimly lit room, carefully applying a shade of crimson to my lips. The reflection staring back at me exuded power, cruelty—a woman who had long since abandoned the silly notions of weakness and kindness. Those were for fools and children. They were nothing more than shackles meant to hold me back, and I had no use for them anymore. It was a dog-eat-dog world, and I refused to be left behind. My eyes gleamed with satisfaction as I traced the outline of my lips, the colour rich like freshly spilt blood. It was fitting. Blood had been spilt before, and more would be spilt againThe world had always been my chessboard, and I had played and would continue to play my pieces well. The soft ring of my phone interrupted my musings and brought me out of my thoughts. I reached for it almost lazily, fully expecting it to be another one of my pathetic underlings grovelling for my attention. But I was surprised as I saw the name flashing on

LUCAS'S POV1 DAY AGO.When the car arrived at the front of my crib which was located deep inside an undeveloped area. I made sure it was unnoticeable. From the outside view, any random stranger would think it was some abandoned building when really it held secrets as dark as night itself. As I stepped out of the car, my men hovered beside me. When we got to the gate, the security guards who were standing at alert confirmed my identity and opened the gate for me to enter. I stepped into the compound and headed directly for the door.I made slow, casual strides towards it and as I finally approached it, I snapped my fingers and my men opened it for me. The door chimed open and I stepped into the soft scent of cherries in the air.I already knew where it was coming from.I darted my gaze in the direction of a lady standing on top of the stage with her body clinging seductively to the stripping pole. The other stripers continued dancing. I was the one who gave them that order. Even when

Claim i broke out of the cell.” I ordered and got up from my chair and paced towards the door. When I got close enough, I grabbed the doorknob and pushed it open. It made a low chime as I stepped out into the hallway and without closing the door, I headed towards the door at the end of the floor. The D.P.O revealed the emergency exit that wasn't guarded to me and I was going to take that path. When I got to the other end of the door, I paused in my tracks and turned to one of my guards who rushed towards the door and opened it. The room I stepped in reeked of odor. It seemed like it hadn't been opened in a long while. I shifted my gaze to one of my men and ordered him, “Go check what's going on in there?”The guard stepped forward and took gentle strides into the room. I waited until he

LUCAS'S POV1 DAY AGOAfter making the call, I waited for a minute before I received another call from my men. They had arrived at the back gate of police station and were waiting patiently for my go ahead. “I don't want a loud hit. I want something low and coded.” I said into the speaker. “What about the people that are going to be ensuring the DPO gets the message clearly?”“They are here boss. We'll make sure he gets the message clearly.” I waited for a while before I thought about it for a while and snapped. “You know what? I'll do it myself.” “Get into his office, beat the hell out of him and then call for me. I'll do the confrontation myself.” I turned out and I heard a corresponding hum from the other end of the phone as I ended the call and turned my gaze back to the sight of the inmates in the room. They were all 3.Each of them had unruly mops of hair on their head, red eyes, shaky breath and a staggering stance. In short, they reeked of poverty, remorse, regret and fear.

Thank you.”“You're welcome, dear. I'll make more for you if you ask me, okay?”Ivy nodded, her smile shy. “Thank you.”The scent of freshly cooked food filled the dining room and teased my nose, but I barely glanced at the spread before me. Madame Browne had taken her seat near me, her hands clasped together, a soft but expectant look on her face. The dishes were warm, inviting, but my stomach twisted at the thought of eating it.I wasn't trustful enough of her to eat from what she had cooked.I made a pretence of drinking from a glass of juice before lowering it back down onto the table. I cleared my throat, picking up my walking stick. “Are you not eating, Grandfather?” Xavier asked and I smiled at him.He was ready dresses f

LUCAS'S POV1 DAY AGO.The air inside the cell room carried a heavy canopy of sweat, remorse and regret which oozed out of the bodies of my bloody inmates. Those bloody motherfuckers. They still hadn't taken their eyes off me for a long time now. Ever since I stepped in, they stole shaky glances at me and would turn the instant I caught them staring. It was clearly obvious they were scared.I mean why wouldn't they be.I had made it clear I was here for one thing. And that was just for the media. You see, the plan was simple. All I had to do was to pose for the media. I had to get them to all believe I was now in jail.I planned on waiting for a week but my sources recommended another week of waiting. Tonight marked the 13th day in this hell hole and the heat wave in there was like I was brought closer to the edge of hell. I knew I was going to go there anytime soon but since I wasn't there yet, I'd prefer it if Lucifer held his horses. The heat in the room licked at my sides as persp

Ella’s POVI stood frozen in the kitchen doorway, my breath caught in my throat at the sight before me.Madame Brown was standing by the stove, cooking. It was the scent of her perfume that had led me here. It was thick in the air, almost clogging. She was stirring something in a pot, her movements deliberate and steady. The soft clinking of utensils against the metal pan filled the silence. The warm scent of breakfast lingered in the air—eggs, butter, something rich and hearty. But none of it settled right with me. This couldn’t be real. It couldn't be. It looked like something from a book of fiction. This was the same woman whose presence once dripped with cruelty. The same woman who had stood by as her husband nearly killed Xavier. The same woman I had feared, the one who had made me question everything about my safety in this house. And now, here she was, dressed in a simple apron, cooking as though she had always belonged in this kitchen, as though she were nothing more than
