POISON'S POV.

“Formula 9.0,” I uttered the word slowly watching as Kayla's eyes darkened. She darted a swift gaze to her surrounding check if there was someone hovering close by and after a minute or two of thorough investigation, she turned back to me.

“You know you're not supposed to say that out loud, I could get sent to jail for that shit!” She yelled at me even in a whisper. I chuckled darkly, seeing how worked up she was about my words.

“Calm down, I just need to get it today. It kind of an emergency,” I said, holding her shoulder as I watched her smirk before turning to open the door to her shady moveable outlet.

The keys rattled as the lock snapped open. She twisted the swiftly and pushed the door open, the thud it made bracing they inner walls of my ears. The inside of the room was dark just like I expected.

Kayla always insisted on it being in darkness just Incase the police comes for a search when she wasn't around. “Come in,” She said and turned to face me.

POISON’S POVI rushed all the way back to the McKinney mansion with the help of Kayla's shabby looking car. I had no other option but to do that, there were no taxis and the buses weren't in circulation. It was already evening when I arrived at the tall gates of the mansion. The ethereal moonlight lit the well tiled estates. The McKinney mansion sure did look picture perfect under the moonlight, it's silver gates glistened under the soft blue hues of moonlight. I pushed closer to it and as I reached to press the button to alert the gate keepers, I heard the sound of a car's engine behind me. It was obvious Kayla was going back. I turned to stare at the fleeting figure of her car for a minute before I tilted my gaze back to the gate. Steely, I pressed the button and watched as a receding beep sound pierced through the air.I waited a long minute, feeling the weight of the formula in the shopping duffel bag in my hand. I'd coated the formula inside a piece of cabbage just Incase someo

POISON'S POV A lone sweat trickled down my forehead as my chest heaved. “Ugh—” I tried to speak but nothing came out of my lips.Ella's eyes loomed brightly with contempt as she paced towards the counter. My fingers curled around it frantically as I felt my nails digging into its edible texture. I had to do something. I couldn't allow her to find out about the formula, if she did, an entirely different level of suspicion would rise. Before she could get to the counter, I released my grip on the cabbage before grabbing another item out of the duffle bag.It was an apple.I raised it, eyeing it before I finally spoke, “I was about to make a fruit salad for the president. As you can see here, I've got it all under control.”My heart continued racing, the erratic beatings it made making my pulse race. I held my breath the whole while she paced towards the counter, each step of her shoes making my breath hitch. She paused just before the counter and glared at the items on the ceramic cou

XAVIER'S POV The first thing I did when I woke up the morning of the first day of the challenge was to take a cold shower to think about it. The cold water washed down my head as I buried myself in thoughts. How dangerous would it get? With Uncle Luke around, I could already tell that things were going to get messy from there. I had to be prepared for whatever they were bringing on.I stepped out of the showers and dressed in a robe. The first thing I noticed when I stepped out of the bathroom was the sleek scent in the air. It was flowery, tantalizing in a way that made me smile.Ella.She was in the dressing room, brushing her hair in neat strands. She was dressed in a gown that clung to her sides appropriately, her beauty making me stare helplessly.I walked towards her making sure she didn't see me when I gripped her slowly from behind. “You look beautiful today,” I said, placing a kiss on her neck.“Today? What about yesterday and the day before?” Ella teased as we both broke in

XAVIER'S POV I rushed all the way out of the elevator the instant the doors slid open. I bolted into the hallways, pacing towards the stairs. I descended on them roughly, skipping a few as I rushed down.Once I reached the last floor, I sprinted towards the huge double doors that led out of the building. Once I got there, I gripped the door knob and pulled it.It made a low creak as I made my wua towards the parking lot. I couldn't believe I slept past the time and forgot totally about the event that was going to happen at the office today.I was sure the shareholders would already be having second thoughts after seeing that I was late to give my speech. The president had made calls to all the shareholders of his company, both the ones that were in the country and the ones that weren't.They all had to be present and witness the works of the candidates so when it got to picking, it wouldn't look as if there was injustice or any form of cheating. The ones that couldn't make it, sent r

XAVIER'S POV I ran into the room, my chest heaving as I sighted the receptionist. I paced towards the reception with my eyes gleaming with rage and restlessness. I still couldn't believe Uncle Luke could stoop as low as to try to ruin my first impression.I bet he's already up there speaking to the shareholders and stealing the spotlight for himself. That wasn't his thing.Something about this information wasn't adding up. Anyone who is well familiar with my uncle could tell that he was never really the type that liked entertaining people; rather, he thrived with an air of authority but that wouldn't work here unless— unless he is helped by her.Madame Browne.Dread seeped into my bones as the thought punched through my mind as I launch my body towards the reception. “Is Madame Browne up in there?” My voice was shaky and hoarse. The receptionist smiled painfully at me before she responded, “Yes, Mr Xavier. She is up in the conference room aisle where the conference meeting is taking

MADAME BROWNE'S POV“It's time I show you all who Xavier McKinney is. I get that the drama created by my people pleasing aunt, Madame Browne and her overstepping husband, my uncle, Lucas, have been put on but I assure you all that I am far different from the vision they've painted in your heads.”I never expected Xavier, that same wimpy kid of yesterday, to have the audacity to stand up to me and talk less to undermine my authority. As I'm saying this, I feel maddened with rage from just the sight of him in the stadium. How dare Xavier?I bet he sure knows that he was playing with fire, not the small kind of fire, I'm talking about a type that could wipe out his entire family within a blink of an eye. I clenched my jaw and sunk my finger into the fleshy texture of my palm.I felt like standing up right there and making it known to him that I could ruin him in one swift tug of my fingers. I owned a power that he doesn't know about and that was being a woman.I had the easy power to man

LUCAS'S POV I wanted to drive a bullet into Xavier's head the instant I heard that he called me over stepping. How dare him?Who the hell does he think I am? Sone kind of desperate fool. I dipped my hands into the side pocket of my suit and I rubbed my fingers around my gun. I always had it there, it stayed there just in case I needed to kill someone as soon as possible.Xavier had just disrespected me and the thought of that haunted me like the aftermath of a horror movie but in my case, disrespect burned my ego hard. In all my years of being a mafia lord, I have never come in contact with anyone who insulted me and went scot free. They all fired pathetic deaths. If it were back in Moscow that duch a thing happened, I'd have my bodys strip him naked and whip the living daylight out of him. After that, they'd take him into my coal room. The room was a room where the floors were made of hot, burning coal and he would be asked to walk over them. For the weaklings, they'd die there aft

LUCAS'S POV I endured the rest of Xavier's speech. It seemed as if the young lad still managed to scale through our first pull. The shareholders, those bunch of gullible fools, were busy nodding like puppets as they listened attentively. The silence in the room haunted me, I was expecting an air of mismatched voices, mumblings and mutters but this? Silence wasn't part of the plan for the first day.We were supposed to get the entire panel of shareholders to dislike Xavier but from his perfectly executed speech, it seemed the opposite was what was happening. I couldn't stand the sight of the president nodding impressively as he watched Xavier win the interests of the shareholders through some shitty speech.I tried to move my eyes away from that smile carved on his aged face but I couldn't. It haunted me, filling my insides with restlessness and rage. I could tell he was head over heels for the fact that his grandson was doing what his son couldn't do.I could tell the memories of Xav

The curve of her body against mine, the way her breathing remained steady—it filled me with calmness. But duty never slept, and neither could I.For a fleeting moment, time seemed to slow, allowing me to simply exist in the tranquillity of her presence. The delicate scent of her lavender shampoo clung to her dark hair, a familiar and soothing aroma that filled my senses. I almost didn't want to get up from her side, knowing she might be the only semblance of calmness in my life today, but I had to.Placing a kiss on her hair, I carefully untangled myself from her and slid out of bed. LUCAS'S POV The neon glow of the city cast long shadows as I watched her disappear into the night. My cigarette burned between my fingers, smoke curling into the air like ghosts of the past. I didn’t move until she was completely out of sight. Only then did I snap my fingers as a signal.A huge tall figure emerged from the darkness, stepping under the pale streetlight. Matteo. He had been an old soldier from back when I was still young —one of the few old ones still breathing. He wasn’t a man of many words, but he was very useful. He was my eyes on the streets, my major source of information, and not for once had he ever been wrong.“Who’s running things now?” I asked, exhaling smoke as I observed his expression.Matteo’s face was lined with years of bloodshed, his dark eyes unreadable. “No one knows, boss. There's a man—he’s got a scorpion tattoo inked onto the back of his hand. Rumours have it that he might be the one.”That gave me pause. "A scorpion?"He nodded once. "We haven’t

MADAME BROWNE'S POV I sat before the gilded vanity in my dimly lit room, carefully applying a shade of crimson to my lips. The reflection staring back at me exuded power, cruelty—a woman who had long since abandoned the silly notions of weakness and kindness. Those were for fools and children. They were nothing more than shackles meant to hold me back, and I had no use for them anymore. It was a dog-eat-dog world, and I refused to be left behind. My eyes gleamed with satisfaction as I traced the outline of my lips, the colour rich like freshly spilt blood. It was fitting. Blood had been spilt before, and more would be spilt againThe world had always been my chessboard, and I had played and would continue to play my pieces well. The soft ring of my phone interrupted my musings and brought me out of my thoughts. I reached for it almost lazily, fully expecting it to be another one of my pathetic underlings grovelling for my attention. But I was surprised as I saw the name flashing on

LUCAS'S POV1 DAY AGO.When the car arrived at the front of my crib which was located deep inside an undeveloped area. I made sure it was unnoticeable. From the outside view, any random stranger would think it was some abandoned building when really it held secrets as dark as night itself. As I stepped out of the car, my men hovered beside me. When we got to the gate, the security guards who were standing at alert confirmed my identity and opened the gate for me to enter. I stepped into the compound and headed directly for the door.I made slow, casual strides towards it and as I finally approached it, I snapped my fingers and my men opened it for me. The door chimed open and I stepped into the soft scent of cherries in the air.I already knew where it was coming from.I darted my gaze in the direction of a lady standing on top of the stage with her body clinging seductively to the stripping pole. The other stripers continued dancing. I was the one who gave them that order. Even when

LUCAS'S POV 1 DAY AGO.“Is the ride ready?” I asked with a calm voice and my assistant flashed me a glance before he beamed, “Yes sir.”“Alright officer, I'll see you soon if you dare spill anything. Claim i broke out of the cell.” I ordered and got up from my chair and paced towards the door. When I got close enough, I grabbed the doorknob and pushed it open. It made a low chime as I stepped out into the hallway and without closing the door, I headed towards the door at the end of the floor. The D.P.O revealed the emergency exit that wasn't guarded to me and I was going to take that path. When I got to the other end of the door, I paused in my tracks and turned to one of my guards who rushed towards the door and opened it. The room I stepped in reeked of odor. It seemed like it hadn't been opened in a long while. I shifted my gaze to one of my men and ordered him, “Go check what's going on in there?”The guard stepped forward and took gentle strides into the room. I waited until he

LUCAS'S POV1 DAY AGOAfter making the call, I waited for a minute before I received another call from my men. They had arrived at the back gate of police station and were waiting patiently for my go ahead. “I don't want a loud hit. I want something low and coded.” I said into the speaker. “What about the people that are going to be ensuring the DPO gets the message clearly?”“They are here boss. We'll make sure he gets the message clearly.” I waited for a while before I thought about it for a while and snapped. “You know what? I'll do it myself.” “Get into his office, beat the hell out of him and then call for me. I'll do the confrontation myself.” I turned out and I heard a corresponding hum from the other end of the phone as I ended the call and turned my gaze back to the sight of the inmates in the room. They were all 3.Each of them had unruly mops of hair on their head, red eyes, shaky breath and a staggering stance. In short, they reeked of poverty, remorse, regret and fear.

President’s PovAT THE MCKINNEY MANSION I watched as my family sat down for breakfast, Madame Brown fussing each and every one of them.“Ivy, darling, do you like your pancakes?” She asked my great- granddaughter. The innocent girl beamed at her. “Yes, I do. Thank you.”“You're welcome, dear. I'll make more for you if you ask me, okay?”Ivy nodded, her smile shy. “Thank you.”The scent of freshly cooked food filled the dining room and teased my nose, but I barely glanced at the spread before me. Madame Browne had taken her seat near me, her hands clasped together, a soft but expectant look on her face. The dishes were warm, inviting, but my stomach twisted at the thought of eating it.I wasn't trustful enough of her to eat from what she had cooked.I made a pretence of drinking from a glass of juice before lowering it back down onto the table. I cleared my throat, picking up my walking stick. “Are you not eating, Grandfather?” Xavier asked and I smiled at him.He was ready dresses f

LUCAS'S POV1 DAY AGO.The air inside the cell room carried a heavy canopy of sweat, remorse and regret which oozed out of the bodies of my bloody inmates. Those bloody motherfuckers. They still hadn't taken their eyes off me for a long time now. Ever since I stepped in, they stole shaky glances at me and would turn the instant I caught them staring. It was clearly obvious they were scared.I mean why wouldn't they be.I had made it clear I was here for one thing. And that was just for the media. You see, the plan was simple. All I had to do was to pose for the media. I had to get them to all believe I was now in jail.I planned on waiting for a week but my sources recommended another week of waiting. Tonight marked the 13th day in this hell hole and the heat wave in there was like I was brought closer to the edge of hell. I knew I was going to go there anytime soon but since I wasn't there yet, I'd prefer it if Lucifer held his horses. The heat in the room licked at my sides as persp

Ella’s POVI stood frozen in the kitchen doorway, my breath caught in my throat at the sight before me.Madame Brown was standing by the stove, cooking. It was the scent of her perfume that had led me here. It was thick in the air, almost clogging. She was stirring something in a pot, her movements deliberate and steady. The soft clinking of utensils against the metal pan filled the silence. The warm scent of breakfast lingered in the air—eggs, butter, something rich and hearty. But none of it settled right with me. This couldn’t be real. It couldn't be. It looked like something from a book of fiction. This was the same woman whose presence once dripped with cruelty. The same woman who had stood by as her husband nearly killed Xavier. The same woman I had feared, the one who had made me question everything about my safety in this house. And now, here she was, dressed in a simple apron, cooking as though she had always belonged in this kitchen, as though she were nothing more than
