KIRA

When Alana walked up to my desk, I was working on something.

“Let’s go out to lunch,” she suggested. “Please,” she continued with a grin on her face.

It was almost lunchtime when I looked at my watch, so I thought why not? But I was feeling like my work here was never ending.

I looked up at her, but then quickly resumed my task.

“I should really be working. I feel like I am always behind schedule,” I sighed.

Since things were so busy at work just now, it seemed like I had barely met one deadline when another one arose."

“Yeah, about that,” she replied, glancing intently in my direction. Let’s flee! I have something to tell you. "

Now I was worried. Was there something I didn’t know?

I glanced across to Carl’s office—one of my coworkers and, if you asked me, some sort of Gabriel’s informant—but he was preoccupied with reading a report and didn’t seem to notice anything. He said nothing when we went out and wasn’t that kind of supervisor.

More than anything else, Carl’s frequ

GABRIELOn Saturday morning when I returned from my morning run, my mother was waiting for me in the kitchen. This was strange. My mother had not visited me in a while, but suddenly she was at my home. I couldn’t deny that I missed her.“Mom, to what pleasure do I owe your visit?” “Hello to you too, my son. I just missed you and I came to see you,” she explained, rounding the table to give me a welcome kiss and a hug. “I’ve made coffee.” She said with a smile. She was wearing a silk blouse and ironed trousers, and she had perfectly styled hair with not a single out-of-place strand.“Thank you. So, can I help you? Is there something wrong?”“Why do you think there is? I just came to see you” “Yeah, you said that once,” I said in a low voice. When my father left us, there were times when I blamed my mother. Then when he died, I shut myself in and left home. She tried a couple of times to get in touch with me, but I disappeared from her radar. She would text me from time to time, tho

GABRIELI was so quiet sitting in my office after the storm with my mother last night. It was not until Kira stormed through the door that I shuddered into reality. “I’ve had enough. I quit!” she screamed so loudly that her voice echoed through my ears.“What? Again?” I blurted out in shock, but I couldn’t help and grinned. It was the second time she would do it only this time she was shouting it in my face. “What are you saying?” I reacted with shock. I wasn’t expecting her to give up so quickly. Again.“Oh, come on, Gabriel. As if you don’t know” I had to come up with a solution since I couldn’t let her leave the office and my life in this way. Not for the second time.“I truly don’t. What’s happening, Kira?” I said in the most serious way possible. She gave a smirk. “I’ve been working my butt out! I’ve spent the last week slaving nonstop! After telling you, I decided it wasn’t the best course of action. I placed my life on pause, but after playing some pointless game of chance,

KIRAEverything happened so fast. When it was all over, I was quite ashamed. Even if it wasn’t the first time I scolded myself for being so easily tricked. But I wanted him so much. I needed him. We sat up, carefully getting our clothes back on, as he drew away from me. I was acutely conscious of my surroundings—his office, the boss’s office, even if it was Gabriel and the fact that we had engaged in sexual activity here it was like the worst stereotype imaginable. I was eager to leave this place.“See you on Monday?” I muttered and left his office without waiting for a response. So much for my attempt to quit the job. However, if I would be honest, I hadn’t really wanted to quit. I wanted to confront him about what was unfolding at the office, and I could get him to admit that everything was intentional. After apologizing, he gave a justification for his actions. The many tasks and unreasonable timeframes. I couldn’t believe it was because of Mark and we weren’t even dating, yet thi

GABRIELThe sun was still high in the sky and Saturday was off to a great start. I loved sitting by the pool and drinking my glass of whiskey on the rocks. I had company too. And it wasn’t my mother. “I’ve been thinking,” Lilliana said.“Yes?”“Perhaps tying the knot isn’t such a bad idea,” she muttered and her tone was carefree, as if we were only discussing our daily activities and not our long-term goals.“Say that again?”She turned and grinned at me. “I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem to be an enormous problem to me.” she stated with that same grin. I was in awe. Lilliana was just as shocked as I was to learn that our mothers were arranging our future together behind our backs. I assumed that her family had already spoken to her.“Who spoke to you? Your mother? Maybe your father?” I questioned her, but she gave me no answer.Lilliana totally ignored me. But she spoke in the same airy, carefree manner, gazing at the pool.“Oh, come on, you know I don’t give a damn about what

KIRAThe next morning I was shivering when I awoke. I’d left the window open over the night and it was chilling. As soon as I put on a sweater, I entered the kitchen. Something smelled so fine. Only one person could make those pancakes. My mom. As I entered the kitchen, she turned to face me and grinned. With too much noise and shocked at the same time, I sat down on the chair at the table. I watched her cook my favorite childhood breakfast, and it was like living a dream.“Are you hungry?” she suddenly asked me, squirming in my chair. It was like I was looking at her and still couldn’t believe she was here. I wondered how she’d gotten here. I clearly hadn’t called her. It’s not like I got so drunk after what happened with Gabriel that I didn’t know what I was doing. That thought gave me the creeps. But she was already here, cooking for me.“To be honest, yes, I’m hungry. I’m not gonna lie. I really missed your pancakes, Mom!” I said in a choked voice. I didn’t understand how sh

KIRAMy God, how could I forget Madeline was in the house, too? My mother’s face went from soothing and relaxed to genuinely shocked. “Mommy…” mother repeated tears forming in the corner of her eyes. “Mom, who is this lady?” Maddie asked and my world as I knew it had just collapsed. Right at that moment, my mother approached Maddie. She reached out and gently stroked her cheek. She couldn’t get a word out. Maddie didn’t even take a step back. It was as if they had known each other all their lives. “Hello, little girl,” Mom said in a voice choked with emotion and literally kneeled before her. My heart had already stopped a few times.“Hi!” said my daughter, happy, with a wide, ear-to-ear smile. I was literally melting and barely realized the reality I was living in. I knew that this was bound to happen, but no one had prepared me for this avalanche of feelings. “What is your name sweety?” mother continued to ask her. I was still frozen in place, my heart pounding.“My name is Made

GABRIELClive Peterson, a longtime friend and one of my clients, was the one wanting my services. For free this time. Like a charity thing. So I had to meet him at his house. I didn’t like where we were going to meet. It was originally scheduled for his downtown office, but shortly after my shift ended, I received a text telling me to meet him at his home.“Gabriel!” In shorts and a t-shirt, Clive showed up to greet me in the entrance of his property. He didn’t appear to be going about his business as usual; instead, he appeared to be on holiday.Feeling overdressed in my suit, I stepped out of the automobile.“I trust you don’t mind coming here.” He said with a sparkle in his brown eyes. His naturally dark hair was sharp, and his face was tanned. “Don’t you think the weather was just too great for us to be locked up in an office?” He took me inside without waiting for my response and gave me a friendly pat on the back.Indeed, the weather was lovely. KIRAYesterday was such a full day and now I could feel my stomach turning upside down and I had an awful headache. It was a day filled to the brim with emotions. Emotions that I didn’t seem to know how to handle properly. After lunch, I couldn’t stay in the office anymore. I informed Alana that I would skip work, to let Gabriel know because I really didn’t want to face him. I first went to the pharmacy before going straight home.“You all right, sweetie?” I heard a voice as I was trying to unlock the door to my apartment. It was my neighbor, Mrs. Crane. “Yeah,” I said and forced a smile onto my face. “Just a little dizzy.”“Do you need anything, my dear?” Mrs. Crane continued to ask, and as much as I used to enjoy talking to her now I really didn’t feel up to it. “I’m fine, don’t worry, Mrs. Crane. Nothing that a little rest could not fix” “Ok, take care hon!”I didn’t answer back, but just turned the key in the door lock and walked in. I finally gained access to my apartment a

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   HAPILLY EVER AFTER

GABRIELThis day was going to be an experience that we would be sure to remember for many years to come. I suggested to Kira that it would be a splendid plan if we traveled to Hollow Peak to pay her family a visit. They would be so happy to see us together... all three of us. As the Christmas season drew closer, this time of year was an especially meaningful and joyous time. It was like a circle closing. As I pulled up to Kira’s family home in Hollow Peak, I could see the excitement on their faces from the window. Kira’s mother rushed out of the house to us, extending her open arms and giving us both a warm and loving embrace. Upon seeing us, she expressed great delight and joy and welcomed us warmly into her home.We stepped inside the cozy living room, where a warm fire was burning in the fireplace. The inviting and delectable aroma of freshly baked cookies and holiday treats filled the entire room. Mrs. Reed had a hard time containing her enthusiasm when we sat down on the comforta

KIRAGiven all the excitement, I couldn’t believe I got any sleep at all. I had a premonition that something was going to take place today. It turned out that my assumption was correct. Two knocks at the door brought me with my feet on the ground, as I was still in a dream world. When I opened the door, Gabriel was there, and our daughter, Maddie, was standing beside him. As soon as I saw the delight in her expression, I realized that something amazing was about to happen. As Gabriel spoke, I could feel a sense of anticipation and excitement growing within me as I realized he had something special in store for me.“Hey Kira,” he said with a smile. “I am sorry to barge in like this, but I need your help. I’ve got a business meeting in the afternoon, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to spend the day with Maddie like we planned. So is it alright if I leave her with you for the day?” he asked with a grin on his face. When I initially heard the news, it shocked me. However, upon looking in

There were no more steps to take. I was so close to my family.Maddie and I were more connected than ever before as she talked to me about the troubles she had faced and the hopes she held for the future. She really missed me. We could finally look at each other and recognize our true selves, and it gave me an overwhelming feeling of contentment and joy that had been absent for such a long time. And then there was Gabriel. The time we spent together last night was a reminder to me that my love for him had not diminished in the slightest. Our relationship had endured a lot of hardship, and there were moments where I thought it might be beyond repair. I sensed that this was meant to happen, and I knew that we were meant for each other as I held him close.“Wow, I love Chinese,” Alana said, diving into the dish.“Bet you do,”

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   FOREVER AND EVER

KIRAIt’s been a long time since I had such a calm conversation with Gabriel. I missed his warm voice. My heart was aching from the weight of the past as I sat there and watched Gabriel. I knew that in order to put the past behind us and stop hurting one other; we had to bury the hatchet of war. “Gabriel,” I began, my voice hesitant. “I need to talk to you about Maddie.”Gabriel looked up, his eyes meeting mine. “What about her?” he asked, his voice reserved.“I understand now that I made a mistake in hiding the truth about Maddie being your daughter,” I whispered. “I should have told you the truth from the beginning.”Gabriel’s expression softened, and he let out a deep sigh. “I know I didn’t do the right thing either,” he admitted. “When I did the DNA test without your knowledge and filed that lawsuit seeking full custody.”I nodded, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “We both made mistakes, Gabriel. But Maddie needs us to be her parents, to work together for her sake.”

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   ALL I NEDEED

KIRAI couldn’t believe Gabriel’s nerve. He had the audacity to suggest we ignore the court’s decision and both look out for Maddie’s best interests. How far could his recklessness go?That this was happening to me shocked me. I walked all the way to Gabriel’s house, and here I was by myself in this pitch-black alley. I did not know how I got here, but I didn’t like it. My palms were sweating profusely, and my heart was pounding. I could feel my hair standing up on the back of my neck.Gabriel must still be in his house, I was certain. While someone else was coming after me, the coward wouldn’t. I knew it wasn’t him when I heard hasty footsteps behind me.It was someone else, and they were getting closer. My legs felt numb as I tried to keep up with the pace. I was too scared to look back, but I could hear them getting closer and closer. I knew I needed to find a way out of here, but everything looked the same in this alley. There were no lights, no doors, no windows. My mind started r

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   YOU'LL REGRET IT, GABRIEL BATES!

KIRA The only company I had while I sat alone in my living room was the sound of the clock ticking. The room was still, silent, and heavy with the weight of my thoughts. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. Gabriel had won custody of Maddie again. I felt sick to my stomach as I thought about it. How could this be happening? I had done everything in my power to prove to the court that Maddie was better off with me, but it seemed like none of it had mattered. Gabriel had won, and there was nothing I could do about it. I tried to overcome the sense of helplessness that had taken hold of me. For Maddie’s sake, I knew I had to maintain my composure, but it was challenging when all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and sob. I reflected on all the occasions I had spent with Maddie, the times we had had together, and our love and respect for one another. Everything seemed very genuine and real. I didn’t know how the court could disregard that. But then again, Gabriel was a skille

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   I MADE MY DECISION!

KIRA I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I thought about seeing Gabriel again in court. The citation had finally reached him, and we would have face off once more in our never-ending battle for custody of Maddie. It had been a year since I last saw her, and the pain of not being able to be with her on her sixth birthday still stung my heart. But I wouldn’t let that get to me. I would fight tooth and nail to get her back, no matter what it took. This time, with the help of my new lawyer and the additional evidence we had gathered, I was sure we would come out on top. It was not just about winning, though. It was about being reunited with my daughter, about being able to hold her close and tell her how much I loved her. Being a mother to her was what it was about, something he had denied me for a long time. I couldn’t let myself get too emotional, though. I needed to stay focused, to keep my eye on the prize. Gabriel would do everything in his power to keep Maddie away from
