GABRIEL

The blood froze in my veins. I tried to breathe in but a heavy weight was pressing on my chest. I heard it very well. The little girl said mommy.

She was still talking, but I was so shocked that I wasn’t able to get a word out. I simply hung up and realized my hand was shaking on the phone.

If this was a dream, maybe it was time for someone to pinch me and wake me up.

“Mr. Bates, are you leaving?” asked the nurse coming in to check on Kira.

“Yes...”

“Is everything all right, sir?” she insisted, but all I had to do was get out of here.

“Everything is fine, thank you. Just tell Miss Reed that everything has been taken care of. Once you discharge her, she can go home”

“I will do that, sir. Have a nice day and take care of yourself Mr. Bates!”

I didn’t answer him back, just walked out of the ward and didn’t stop until I got to John’s car. The little girl’s words still echoed in my head. John saw me completely transformed.

“Something wrong, man?”

Maybe it was neither the time

KIRA“It was the biggest mistake of my life, Alana. I shouldn’t have come here for him. I realized it wasn’t worth it. Thank you for coming to take me. My car is a wreck. Can you imagine? He could have killed me. And what’s he doing? He’s just paying for my hospitalization. How cynical!” I snarled, snatching what little I had in the ward. I had called Alana before I fell asleep and asked her to come and get me as soon as possible. “You know I’ve always had a reservation about Gabriel Bates. But now that you’re coming back, you should know that things aren’t so good at the company. So Gabriel did you a favor by paying your hospital bill,” Alana said, taking the bag in her hand.“What do you mean things aren’t so good?” “Well, I really didn’t want to be the one to give you more bad news, but you know we’re down on the number of customers. It’s been going well for the last five years. Something’s going on, Kira. You’ll have to see the reports. It doesn’t look good at all,” said my fri

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   AN OLD-NEW LIFE

KIRAI had a hunch that something big was about to happen this morning. My hand hesitated as I reached for the shirt I had intended to put on today while still in my underwear. Something about it seemed off. I bit my lower lip as I searched for my jeans, then took a step back and paused for a while. Something was definitely off. I had lost the company I had worked so hard for. So many sleepless nights getting it up and running. So many days away from my daughter. I wanted to scream with anger and pain in my heart. But then I thought no jeans. Especially not today. I also moved close to my new job and left Glasgow for good. Oh well, not that new. It was also not my old apartment. As over the years I had saved up some money, I decided to give Maddie something more comfortable. So I bought a house on the banks of the Thames with an enormous yard, porch and a second floor. It was a dream. I looked at the time and went through my closet before deciding on a short skirt and a cute shir

GABRIELI thought about Kira the entire weekend. I knew it hurt her to see me with Lilliana at Jubilee, but life went on. Or at least for me, it was. But who was I kidding? I could see her struggling to keep me away. And I wasn’t doing a very good job either. I had all weekend to put Kira deep into oblivion. But how could two days heal me?I pretended to pay attention during reports and feedback sessions at a few meetings on Monday morning while I waited to leave my office and take the elevator down to the third floor. She no longer had an office near me. It was not a punishment or something; it was just my way of keeping her away. But it seemed I just couldn’t stay away. I wouldn’t normally do anything like this, but I needed to see her. She was already seated at her desk when I stepped on their floor. Her bright red blouse hugged her breasts, and her chocolate hair fell to her shoulders.“Kira?” “Yes, Mr. Bates!” she answered, and her politeness struck me like a sledgehammer. “

KIRAI became aware of the warm late afternoon as I made my way back to my apartment. We were in for a magnificent evening as spring came to its end. I took it more slowly as I made my way to my destination, observing people enjoying the scenery. London might be a beautiful place in the spring. London might be a beautiful place in the spring. My daughter was playing with Mrs. Crane on the steps outside our flat and she was really enjoying herself. “Hello, honey!” I called Maddie with a smile.“Hello, mommy!”I took a seat on the steps and admired the trees and passing families. Two lovers walked by holding hands and looking only at each other. I observed them, took note of how involved they appeared to be in each other’s discussion, how the woman laughed and how the man’s eyes lingered on her face. I longingly wondered what happened to that feeling, since I knew what it was like to be that deeply in love. Why wasn’t love able to endure? Why did it seem as though it was continually

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak    I FELT LIKE A FATHER

GABRIELI didn’t really care anymore that I was showing up everywhere with Lilliana, my secretary. Just like I didn’t care that last night I had picked the exact restaurant where Kira and Alana were. I rarely ate there, but somehow I felt the need to do all this in front of her. I could see the pain and disgust on her face at the same time. And today they invited us to a big party in honor of my childhood friend Jasper. The celebration was a social gathering. Our families have been acquainted for a long time. This was a party hosted by his parents to welcome him back to London after a brief absence. Jasper had reportedly gone to rehab in Scotland, but that was not how his family regarded his needed break. They talked about him traveling a lot. I learned from my mother that Jasper’s parents wanted him to rejoin the family business.I started missing my mum the moment I thought about her. Maybe it was time to call her and ask if we could get together for a few days.“How long must we

KIRAWhen Alana walked up to my desk, I was working on something.“Let’s go out to lunch,” she suggested. “Please,” she continued with a grin on her face.It was almost lunchtime when I looked at my watch, so I thought why not? But I was feeling like my work here was never ending. I looked up at her, but then quickly resumed my task.“I should really be working. I feel like I am always behind schedule,” I sighed. Since things were so busy at work just now, it seemed like I had barely met one deadline when another one arose."“Yeah, about that,” she replied, glancing intently in my direction. Let’s flee! I have something to tell you. " Now I was worried. Was there something I didn’t know? I glanced across to Carl’s office—one of my coworkers and, if you asked me, some sort of Gabriel’s informant—but he was preoccupied with reading a report and didn’t seem to notice anything. He said nothing when we went out and wasn’t that kind of supervisor. More than anything else, Carl’s frequ

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   IT WAS A CRAZY STEP

GABRIELOn Saturday morning when I returned from my morning run, my mother was waiting for me in the kitchen. This was strange. My mother had not visited me in a while, but suddenly she was at my home. I couldn’t deny that I missed her.“Mom, to what pleasure do I owe your visit?” “Hello to you too, my son. I just missed you and I came to see you,” she explained, rounding the table to give me a welcome kiss and a hug. “I’ve made coffee.” She said with a smile. She was wearing a silk blouse and ironed trousers, and she had perfectly styled hair with not a single out-of-place strand.“Thank you. So, can I help you? Is there something wrong?”“Why do you think there is? I just came to see you” “Yeah, you said that once,” I said in a low voice. When my father left us, there were times when I blamed my mother. Then when he died, I shut myself in and left home. She tried a couple of times to get in touch with me, but I disappeared from her radar. She would text me from time to time, tho

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   SHE HAD BEEN MINE. AGAIN!

GABRIELI was so quiet sitting in my office after the storm with my mother last night. It was not until Kira stormed through the door that I shuddered into reality. “I’ve had enough. I quit!” she screamed so loudly that her voice echoed through my ears.“What? Again?” I blurted out in shock, but I couldn’t help and grinned. It was the second time she would do it only this time she was shouting it in my face. “What are you saying?” I reacted with shock. I wasn’t expecting her to give up so quickly. Again.“Oh, come on, Gabriel. As if you don’t know” I had to come up with a solution since I couldn’t let her leave the office and my life in this way. Not for the second time.“I truly don’t. What’s happening, Kira?” I said in the most serious way possible. She gave a smirk. “I’ve been working my butt out! I’ve spent the last week slaving nonstop! After telling you, I decided it wasn’t the best course of action. I placed my life on pause, but after playing some pointless game of chance,

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   HAPILLY EVER AFTER

GABRIELThis day was going to be an experience that we would be sure to remember for many years to come. I suggested to Kira that it would be a splendid plan if we traveled to Hollow Peak to pay her family a visit. They would be so happy to see us together... all three of us. As the Christmas season drew closer, this time of year was an especially meaningful and joyous time. It was like a circle closing. As I pulled up to Kira’s family home in Hollow Peak, I could see the excitement on their faces from the window. Kira’s mother rushed out of the house to us, extending her open arms and giving us both a warm and loving embrace. Upon seeing us, she expressed great delight and joy and welcomed us warmly into her home.We stepped inside the cozy living room, where a warm fire was burning in the fireplace. The inviting and delectable aroma of freshly baked cookies and holiday treats filled the entire room. Mrs. Reed had a hard time containing her enthusiasm when we sat down on the comforta

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak    I PROMISE, KIRA!

KIRAGiven all the excitement, I couldn’t believe I got any sleep at all. I had a premonition that something was going to take place today. It turned out that my assumption was correct. Two knocks at the door brought me with my feet on the ground, as I was still in a dream world. When I opened the door, Gabriel was there, and our daughter, Maddie, was standing beside him. As soon as I saw the delight in her expression, I realized that something amazing was about to happen. As Gabriel spoke, I could feel a sense of anticipation and excitement growing within me as I realized he had something special in store for me.“Hey Kira,” he said with a smile. “I am sorry to barge in like this, but I need your help. I’ve got a business meeting in the afternoon, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to spend the day with Maddie like we planned. So is it alright if I leave her with you for the day?” he asked with a grin on his face. When I initially heard the news, it shocked me. However, upon looking in

KIRAThe following day it filled me with immense joy and happiness. I was so excited when I ordered some Chinese food and asked Alana if she wanted to have a chat. There were no more steps to take. I was so close to my family.Maddie and I were more connected than ever before as she talked to me about the troubles she had faced and the hopes she held for the future. She really missed me. We could finally look at each other and recognize our true selves, and it gave me an overwhelming feeling of contentment and joy that had been absent for such a long time. And then there was Gabriel. The time we spent together last night was a reminder to me that my love for him had not diminished in the slightest. Our relationship had endured a lot of hardship, and there were moments where I thought it might be beyond repair. I sensed that this was meant to happen, and I knew that we were meant for each other as I held him close.“Wow, I love Chinese,” Alana said, diving into the dish.“Bet you do,”

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   WE WERE A FAMILY

KIRAI couldn’t help but smile to myself as I sat in this spot, the terrace of his house, which had become a favorite spot of mine, and observed the world outside. My joy stemmed from the fact that Gabriel and I had made up, and I was once more his.For so long, I was lost without him. The connections between us had become so strong that when we were apart, I felt like an essential part of me had been taken away. Our lives would merge once again, and we would build a future together.I knew that there would be difficulties since there always were in life, but I had faith that we could get through them. • Miracle on Hollow Peak   FOREVER AND EVER

KIRAIt’s been a long time since I had such a calm conversation with Gabriel. I missed his warm voice. My heart was aching from the weight of the past as I sat there and watched Gabriel. I knew that in order to put the past behind us and stop hurting one other; we had to bury the hatchet of war. “Gabriel,” I began, my voice hesitant. “I need to talk to you about Maddie.”Gabriel looked up, his eyes meeting mine. “What about her?” he asked, his voice reserved.“I understand now that I made a mistake in hiding the truth about Maddie being your daughter,” I whispered. “I should have told you the truth from the beginning.”Gabriel’s expression softened, and he let out a deep sigh. “I know I didn’t do the right thing either,” he admitted. “When I did the DNA test without your knowledge and filed that lawsuit seeking full custody.”I nodded, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “We both made mistakes, Gabriel. But Maddie needs us to be her parents, to work together for her sake.”

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   ALL I NEDEED

KIRAI couldn’t believe Gabriel’s nerve. He had the audacity to suggest we ignore the court’s decision and both look out for Maddie’s best interests. How far could his recklessness go?That this was happening to me shocked me. I walked all the way to Gabriel’s house, and here I was by myself in this pitch-black alley. I did not know how I got here, but I didn’t like it. My palms were sweating profusely, and my heart was pounding. I could feel my hair standing up on the back of my neck.Gabriel must still be in his house, I was certain. While someone else was coming after me, the coward wouldn’t. I knew it wasn’t him when I heard hasty footsteps behind me.It was someone else, and they were getting closer. My legs felt numb as I tried to keep up with the pace. I was too scared to look back, but I could hear them getting closer and closer. I knew I needed to find a way out of here, but everything looked the same in this alley. There were no lights, no doors, no windows. My mind started r

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   YOU'LL REGRET IT, GABRIEL BATES!

KIRA The only company I had while I sat alone in my living room was the sound of the clock ticking. The room was still, silent, and heavy with the weight of my thoughts. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. Gabriel had won custody of Maddie again. I felt sick to my stomach as I thought about it. How could this be happening? I had done everything in my power to prove to the court that Maddie was better off with me, but it seemed like none of it had mattered. Gabriel had won, and there was nothing I could do about it. I tried to overcome the sense of helplessness that had taken hold of me. For Maddie’s sake, I knew I had to maintain my composure, but it was challenging when all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and sob. I reflected on all the occasions I had spent with Maddie, the times we had had together, and our love and respect for one another. Everything seemed very genuine and real. I didn’t know how the court could disregard that. But then again, Gabriel was a skille

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   I MADE MY DECISION!

KIRA I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I thought about seeing Gabriel again in court. The citation had finally reached him, and we would have face off once more in our never-ending battle for custody of Maddie. It had been a year since I last saw her, and the pain of not being able to be with her on her sixth birthday still stung my heart. But I wouldn’t let that get to me. I would fight tooth and nail to get her back, no matter what it took. This time, with the help of my new lawyer and the additional evidence we had gathered, I was sure we would come out on top. It was not just about winning, though. It was about being reunited with my daughter, about being able to hold her close and tell her how much I loved her. Being a mother to her was what it was about, something he had denied me for a long time. I couldn’t let myself get too emotional, though. I needed to stay focused, to keep my eye on the prize. Gabriel would do everything in his power to keep Maddie away from

  • Miracle on Hollow Peak   A DAY TO REMEMBER

GABRIEL As I ventured through the beautiful mountain range of Hollow Peak, I experienced a sensation of great joy and serenity. The cool breeze swept through my hair, and the chirping of birds filled the air, making me feel like I was in a different world altogether. But what made this experience even more special was that I was not alone. By my side was my six-year-old daughter Maddie, and for the next few days, she was all mine. I had planned this trip for a long time, and I knew Maddie would be over the moon to spend time in such a beautiful place. But what she didn’t know was that I had a surprise in store for her, one that would make this trip even more unforgettable. As we approached our destination, I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. I knew that Kira's family was also in Hollow Peak and I knew there was a probability of me bumping into them.
