Cassian's pov

I climbed the stairs wondering why Maya looked so disturbed. Her door is open and I go right in. Maya's body is pressed against Holden as he runs a hand up and down her back, a hot rush of anger pulses through my veins drowning out the voice of reason.

“What is going on here?” I ask.

They tear apart, surprise written on their faces. I grab Holden's collar pushing him against the wall.

“Cassian stop, he was just trying to comfort me,” Maya says, her voice breaking.

“What's wrong?” I ask.

“There was a man —,” Holden answers, making me throw a glare in his direction. “Did I ask you?”

He shakes his head, folding his arms over his chest.

“A man was following me,” she answers, the words a punch to the gut. “What?”

“Did you see what he looked like?” I ask, the worst unfolding.

“He was wearing shades and a coat.”

Her eyes are glassy with unshed tears, as she hugs herself as if trying to hold herself together.

“Did you look at his neck?”

She shakes her head, as I help her off

Maya's pov The bed dips beside me and my eyes flutter open. “What are you doing?” I ask when I feel him beside me. “Sleeping, why aren't you?” He asks, his voice hoarse.“Go on the couch,” I snap, sitting upright. He groans, the sound coming hard and raw from the back of his throat.“No, if you're not comfortable sharing a bed with me you can go on the couch,” he says, pulling the covers further to his shoulders.I throw the covers off, my skin prickling with irritation. The bathroom lights hum softly as I move towards it. Clothes are strewn carelessly on the floor — his dark pants and a white crumpled shirt. But the shirt stops me cold. A deep red smudge stains the collar, bright even in the dim light. I pick it up at the tip of my fingers. Roxanne face flashes, and the coat of lipstick she wore. He slept with her. I pull the clothes to my nose and the smell of sex follows it. I swallow the lump in my throat slapping the wall. That bastard. He marries me and then goes ahead to sle

Cassian's pov“Again,” I repeat, my hand on my chin. He takes a deep breath before starting.“Maya said she was going to have milkshakes with her friend Jenny for thirty minutes in the cafe near the hospital. She told me to wait for her and when she was done she would come find me. So I waited for them and when thirty minutes were over I went in search of her only to find out she had left.”He stands akimbo, his gaze on the wall. “And how long did it take you to find her?”“Three minutes.”I scoff, the sound coming out bitter and sharp. “That was enough time for him to slit her carotid artery and for her to bleed out!” I scream, my fingers digging into the table. He doesn't flinch but bows his head. “I'm sorry sir.”“I don't need you to be sorry, I need you to do better.”He nods, “again,” I repeat, looking at my father's portrait. The whiff of his cologne invades my nostrils unburying every memory I have tried to keep hidden.**Flashback**“Eyes ahead,” he says, my feet tremble as I

Maya's pov“Stupid, stupid man,” I mutter. Kicking at the floor like a petulant child. I shouldn't be this upset — but the way my stomach churns tells a different story. He doesn't owe me anything, he can sleep with whoever he wants.“Where are you going?” Holden asks, smiling at me from the base of the stairs. “Uh, nowhere, just looking around.”He nods something unreadable swimming in his eyes. “Maya.”“Hmm.”“There's something you told me last night —”My heart plummets. Shit, I probably muttered something stupid. “Yeah.”“About what?” I ask wiping the sweat from my palm with the fabric of my shorts. His face darkens as he takes a step towards me. “How hot I am,” he says, relief washing over me.“What do you think you told me?” He asks his eyes perusing me like a book.I scratch my head. “Uh, something stupid like that. Obviously.”He smiles but it doesn't reach his eyes. “But it's true right?” He asks, adjusting the collar of his shirt.“Mmm, maybe.”“Maybe! You didn't think tha

I alight the car ready to open Roxanne's door but she refuses.“I'm a big woman, I don't need a man to open my door.”I nod, stepping away from her. The hous

Maya's pov“Hey sleepy head,” Holden says standing over me. My eyes squint as the bright lights stab at my eye lids. I rub my face, my head throbbing.“What happened?” I ask looking around my room. He takes a seat beside me, the bed dipping in the process.“You got attacked,” he answers, touching my bandaged head. I grunt everything coming back in waves. “Leo! How is Leo?” I ask my heart racing.“He was trying to protect me,” I added, trying to sit up.“He is fine, Cassian got to him in time.”I touch my face letting out a slow breath. A year ago all I worried about was finishing a twelve-hour shift without collapsing. Now I'm dodging attacks like I'm some sort of criminal and getting tangled in contracts. How did this become my life?“I brought you something,” he says shifting on the bed. His tousled hair falls on his face as he hands me a brown bag.“What is this?” I ask, looking at it.“A little present for being so cool,” he says, a small smile gracing his lips.I take it out and

Cassian's povMaya must be the most stubborn person on earth because hell — I push the thought down massaging my temples. Ever since she came here it has been chaos, no moment to breathe and now I'm wondering if it was even worth it.I take out the contract going through it, next to it is the treatment plan she created — the hail Mary to save my eyesight. I flip through the pages, the impending danger looming ahead clawing at my skin.Six months. That's all it will take. My stomach churns at the realization, and one month is down. Five to go.I rub my face, a strange feeling slumping my mood even more. Like tradition, I go to the garden and into the expanse of forests. My axe sits at my hand; it's worn and smooth from years of use. The logs of wood I had carved sit there and I take one placing it on top of a chopped tree.I move the axe over my head, the muscles in my arm tightening as I move it down. The sound of wood splintering shatters the quiet, the vibrations running up my arm a

The paddles go over his chest, minutes stretching but still nothing.“He's flatlined,” someone murmurs. No. No. No.“No, we have to save him, it's our job,” I mutter, my words tangling in my throat. I climb on top of him ready for another round of compressions.“Call it,” the chief says from the doorway. I won't stop. “Dr. Sanchez,” he calls, making me stop. Cassian's povI hear shuffling around before she finally speaks. “I'm done, you can go soldier somewhere else.”I turn around and she wears tiny bum shorts and an oversized blue shirt that hangs loosely on one shoulder. She looks like she stepped off a Sunday lazy morning but her legs — long and toned make up for it. My pulse quickens as I open the door. Even like this she still manages to take my breath away. “After you.”She walks ahead, her ass swaying in the process. I don't know if she does it intentionally but she is damn giving me a boner. We enter the kitchen and she puts a plate of cereal in a bowl and takes a seat on one of the barstools. “Don't tell me you're going to watch me eat?” She asks taking the spoon to her mouth.“Yes.”She rolls her eyes digging through the cereal. He wears an ugly brown hood and washed-away jeans that make him look homeless.“Holden,” I call grabbing his attention. He looks up, dark circles covering his eyes.“Where have you been?” I ask my voice echoing around the house. I inhale sharply, willing my legs to move forward. What was I thinking about coming here? The house is nestled just at the edge of the farm town. The red brick house stands with quiet charm, wrapped in the scent of earth and wildflowers. The brick walls, weathered by sun and rain, held stories of simpler times, while a rust-red tin roof glinted in the afternoon light. A white picket fence framed the tiny garden out front, where tomatoes, sunflowers, and mint grow side by side. Smoke curls lazily from the stone chimney, and chickens clucked softly in the nearby coop.I knock on the door and it opens almost immediately. Mum stands there with an apron tied around her waist. She holds a china in one hand and a tablecloth in the other. Her eyes widen when she sees me. “Maya, what are you doing here
