Maya's pov

I swirl my milkshake lazily in my hand — the thick vanilla blend twirling in the glass, my mind elsewhere. Cassian's abs — wet and tout swim freely in my mind. My core throbs as Jenny's voice breaks through the chatter in the cafe.

“Are you listening to me?” She asks, her voice strained. My eyes travel to the street and a man stands there, making a chill run down my spine.

“Yeah, of course, what did you just say?” I ask, pulling my attention towards her.

She tilts her head. “I'm saying my son's baby daddy is back in town and he wants to take my son away from me.”

“What?”

She sighs, “he has money Maya, he can get lawyers that will help him,” she states, her fingers drumming on the coffee table.

I place my milkshake down. Here I am worried that I will be sleeping in the same bed with Cassian while Jenny might be losing her son.

“Why the change in heart, I thought he didn't want him.”

“I don't know either, he even dumped me when I said I wouldn't abort the baby now he is her

Cassian's povI climbed the stairs wondering why Maya looked so disturbed. Her door is open and I go right in. Maya's body is pressed against Holden as he runs a hand up and down her back, a hot rush of anger pulses through my veins drowning out the voice of reason.“What is going on here?” I ask. They tear apart, surprise written on their faces. I grab Holden's collar pushing him against the wall. “Cassian stop, he was just trying to comfort me,” Maya says, her voice breaking. “What's wrong?” I ask.“There was a man —,” Holden answers, making me throw a glare in his direction. “Did I ask you?”He shakes his head, folding his arms over his chest.“A man was following me,” she answers, the words a punch to the gut. “What?”“Did you see what he looked like?” I ask, the worst unfolding.“He was wearing shades and a coat.”Her eyes are glassy with unshed tears, as she hugs herself as if trying to hold herself together.“Did you look at his neck?”She shakes her head, as I help her off

Maya's pov The bed dips beside me and my eyes flutter open. “What are you doing?” I ask when I feel him beside me. “Sleeping, why aren't you?” He asks, his voice hoarse.“Go on the couch,” I snap, sitting upright. He groans, the sound coming hard and raw from the back of his throat.“No, if you're not comfortable sharing a bed with me you can go on the couch,” he says, pulling the covers further to his shoulders.I throw the covers off, my skin prickling with irritation. The bathroom lights hum softly as I move towards it. Clothes are strewn carelessly on the floor — his dark pants and a white crumpled shirt. But the shirt stops me cold. A deep red smudge stains the collar, bright even in the dim light. I pick it up at the tip of my fingers. Roxanne face flashes, and the coat of lipstick she wore. He slept with her. I pull the clothes to my nose and the smell of sex follows it. I swallow the lump in my throat slapping the wall. That bastard. He marries me and then goes ahead to sle

Cassian's pov“Again,” I repeat, my hand on my chin. He takes a deep breath before starting.“Maya said she was going to have milkshakes with her friend Jenny for thirty minutes in the cafe near the hospital. She told me to wait for her and when she was done she would come find me. So I waited for them and when thirty minutes were over I went in search of her only to find out she had left.”He stands akimbo, his gaze on the wall. “And how long did it take you to find her?”“Three minutes.”I scoff, the sound coming out bitter and sharp. “That was enough time for him to slit her carotid artery and for her to bleed out!” I scream, my fingers digging into the table. He doesn't flinch but bows his head. “I'm sorry sir.”“I don't need you to be sorry, I need you to do better.”He nods, “again,” I repeat, looking at my father's portrait. The whiff of his cologne invades my nostrils unburying every memory I have tried to keep hidden.**Flashback**“Eyes ahead,” he says, my feet tremble as I

Maya's pov“Stupid, stupid man,” I mutter. Kicking at the floor like a petulant child. I shouldn't be this upset — but the way my stomach churns tells a different story. He doesn't owe me anything, he can sleep with whoever he wants.“Where are you going?” Holden asks, smiling at me from the base of the stairs. “Uh, nowhere, just looking around.”He nods something unreadable swimming in his eyes. “Maya.”“Hmm.”“There's something you told me last night —”My heart plummets. Shit, I probably muttered something stupid. “Yeah.”“About what?” I ask wiping the sweat from my palm with the fabric of my shorts. His face darkens as he takes a step towards me. “How hot I am,” he says, relief washing over me.“What do you think you told me?” He asks his eyes perusing me like a book.I scratch my head. “Uh, something stupid like that. Obviously.”He smiles but it doesn't reach his eyes. “But it's true right?” He asks, adjusting the collar of his shirt.“Mmm, maybe.”“Maybe! You didn't think tha

Cassian's pov I dial Leo's number again clutching the phone tighter each time he fails to answer. “I'm going to kill him,” I mutter under my breath.I told him to give me hourly updates and it's been two since I got one from him.“You okay?” Roxanne asks, her eyes sliding on my phone.“Yeah just checking up on things.”She nods the heat inside the car making me unbutton my shirt. “What did you marry Maya for?” She asks her eyes curious.“Cause it's not love — men like you don't love,” she adds the words feeling like they slipped from my father's mouth.“She was a compatible companion,” I answered. She hums her eyes traveling outside the window. “And are you planning on ever settling down?”“Not anytime soon, I am not planning on being a man's object,” she says, venom sipping from her voice.“Sir we've arrived,” the driver says. I alight the car ready to open Roxanne's door but she refuses.“I'm a big woman, I don't need a man to open my door.”I nod, stepping away from her. The hous

Maya's pov“Hey sleepy head,” Holden says standing over me. My eyes squint as the bright lights stab at my eye lids. I rub my face, my head throbbing.“What happened?” I ask looking around my room. He takes a seat beside me, the bed dipping in the process.“You got attacked,” he answers, touching my bandaged head. I grunt everything coming back in waves. “Leo! How is Leo?” I ask my heart racing.“He was trying to protect me,” I added, trying to sit up.“He is fine, Cassian got to him in time.”I touch my face letting out a slow breath. A year ago all I worried about was finishing a twelve-hour shift without collapsing. Now I'm dodging attacks like I'm some sort of criminal and getting tangled in contracts. How did this become my life?“I brought you something,” he says shifting on the bed. His tousled hair falls on his face as he hands me a brown bag.“What is this?” I ask, looking at it.“A little present for being so cool,” he says, a small smile gracing his lips.I take it out and

Cassian's povMaya must be the most stubborn person on earth because hell — I push the thought down massaging my temples. Ever since she came here it has been chaos, no moment to breathe and now I'm wondering if it was even worth it.I take out the contract going through it, next to it is the treatment plan she created — the hail Mary to save my eyesight. I flip through the pages, the impending danger looming ahead clawing at my skin.Six months. That's all it will take. My stomach churns at the realization, and one month is down. Five to go.I rub my face, a strange feeling slumping my mood even more. Like tradition, I go to the garden and into the expanse of forests. My axe sits at my hand; it's worn and smooth from years of use. The logs of wood I had carved sit there and I take one placing it on top of a chopped tree.I move the axe over my head, the muscles in my arm tightening as I move it down. The sound of wood splintering shatters the quiet, the vibrations running up my arm a

Maya's povThe monitor flatlines. “I'm starting compressions.”My hands find their way to his chest, each push a desperate attempt to pull him back. “Push epinephrine,” I scream, not letting another person die at my hand. The nurse injects, but still nothing. “Shock him now!”My heart pounds, adrenaline pulsing through my body. The paddles go over his chest, minutes stretching but still nothing.“He's flatlined,” someone murmurs. No. No. No.“No, we have to save him, it's our job,” I mutter, my words tangling in my throat. I climb on top of him ready for another round of compressions.“Call it,” the chief says from the doorway. I won't stop. “Dr. Sanchez,” he calls, making me stop. The weight of failure presses down on my ribs as I rip the gloves off my fingers.“Time of death. Five forty-two.”I storm out of the room, my vision blurry. “Hey, you couldn't have done anything,” Benta says.I barely glance at her as I maneuver through the bodies of injured people. Maya's pov“You should come,” Benta whines as I close the locker, fixing my jacket.“Yeah, you came back and have been working nonstop, you need to have some fun,” Liv adds, swaying her hips.I chuckle pulling the bag to my shoulder. “Ugh, don't you even dare say no tomorrow we don't have work,” Benta interjects.I smile nodding. I need some fun. They all cheer. “We are going to the club,” Lisa hums.We leave for the bar, the clock at ten p.m sharp. My legs feel a bit sore but I think I can hold on for some hours. Find my footing around men without Cassian. The club is packed by the time we arrive and we weave to the open bar. “Tequila shots and keep them coming,” Benta says, tapping the counter playfully. The guy smiles, pouring us three glasses. I take mine downing it in a go. “You ain't playing,” Lisa says, shoving me slightly.I chuckle looking at the guy. He winks and my cheeks warm. “He is really hot,” she whispers. Cassian's povI remove the pods from my ears watching Holden's figure meander inside the house. He wears an ugly brown hood and washed-away jeans that make him look homeless.“Holden,” I call grabbing his attention. He looks up, dark circles covering his eyes.“Where have you been?” I ask my voice echoing around the house. He sighs touching his temples. “Why are you being so loud?”He brushes past me and I grab his arm. The stench of alcohol wraps around him and my stomach twists. “Seriously, where have you been?”He unclutches my fingers from his arm. “Just around.”I trail his face. “Are you okay?”Something etches in his face. “When did you start caring about my well-being”“When you decided to disappear for more than three weeks,” I counter.“It doesn't matter, I'm back.”Before I can ask him more questions he moves to the stairwell climbing up. I watched him until he disappeared through the hallway.I huff rubbing my hand over my forehead. What is going on with him?I look throu

Maya's povI scrub my hands smiling through the enclosed space. I never thought I'd be back here.“Mrs Sanchez,” Dr Ben calls, sliding to the tap next to me. I look at him briefly before focusing my attention on the operating room — it's beautiful.Tools are arranged properly in basins, minimal fluorescent lighting, and nurses surround the patient. It's like heaven on earth.“Mrs Sanchez,” he repeats his voice, breaking through my thoughts. “Uh, did you say something?”We walk inside the scrub nurses helping us with the surgical clothes. “I asked if you prepared for the surgery.”I nod standing across from him. “Then tell me what it's about.”“We are performing a coronary artery bypass grafting, to restore blood flow to the blocked artery with the vessel we take from the patients leg.”“Okay, so what is the first step?” He asks, his piercing blue eyes pinning me in place.I clear my throat. “You make an incision on the chest.”He glares at me. “The median sternotomy, then you split th

Cassian's povIt's been a week since Holden vanished, a week since I forced Maya out of my life. I push down the heavy feeling looking at one of the guards.“Any sign of Holden?”“Not yet sir.”I huff looking at the plans on the table just as Leo steps in a smirk on his lips.“Did you do it?” I ask the sound of the lawn being trimmed filling the space. I look at the Gardner who mindlessly goes back and forth and I scowl.“He was very eager to hire her back.”Good.“I hope you cleared anything that can lead back to us.”He smiles. “Of course.”The silence stretches before I speak again. “How much money did you offer them?”“One hundred million.”I nod something crossing my chest. I wonder what Maya would think if she found out about this.“I thought you wanted her as far away as possible?” He asks and my chest tightens.“She will just get her job back, I'm not planning on getting her back in my life.”Not even if it will kill me.He nods, stepping beside me. Maya's povI take some of the money from my purse and hand it to the cab driver. I get off a heavy weight settling in my chest. He takes my things outside the house a beaming smile on his lips. I inhale sharply, willing my legs to move forward. What was I thinking about coming here? The house is nestled just at the edge of the farm town. The red brick house stands with quiet charm, wrapped in the scent of earth and wildflowers. The brick walls, weathered by sun and rain, held stories of simpler times, while a rust-red tin roof glinted in the afternoon light. A white picket fence framed the tiny garden out front, where tomatoes, sunflowers, and mint grow side by side. Smoke curls lazily from the stone chimney, and chickens clucked softly in the nearby coop.I knock on the door and it opens almost immediately. Mum stands there with an apron tied around her waist. She holds a china in one hand and a tablecloth in the other. Her eyes widen when she sees me. “Maya, what are you doing here

My fingers are trembling not trying to turn the doorknob and chase after her.Tell her how much I love her and I was just being a stupid jerk like always. But I can't, I have to put her safety first. There will always be a Roxanne somewhere in my life and her being next to me is a target.“Is she gone?” I ask when Leo enters his hands on his back.“Yes.”I nod my eyes glued to the table like it has the answers to all of my problems. “Is that all?” I ask when I still feel his presence. He clears his throat, placing a piece of paper on my desk. “What is this?” I ask my brows furrowed.“The paternity test,” he answers, making my heart stop. I sit up straight. I totally forgot about this.I unseal it, my fingers digging inside the papers with force. My fingers trail the words hurriedly and there it is. Fifty percent positive.Uterine half-siblings.

How happy I was that a local town girl had gotten a chance to work for a big-time hospital in Los Angeles. Now I have nothing.Absolutely nothing. Not even Cassian.I walk through the door the acrid smell of antiseptic feeling like a taste of deja vu. The beeping of monitors, the slow cry of patients, and the distant murmurs around the waiting room wrap around me like a soft blanket on a cold night.I exhale giving myself a few seconds to take it all in.God I didn't even know how much I missed this place.
