"You absolutely have to go!" exclaimed the pretty black-haired girl in a doctor's coat. One hand was tucked in the wide pocket at the front of the coat while the other danced around the air with each word she spoke.
Mikayla ran a hand over her face wearily. Her partner, Anna, was at it again. Anna was her closest friend and confidant, and beyond that, she was her business partner.Anna was a gorgeous woman and brilliant doctor who stood out everywhere she went. People often joked that if she ever got tired of being a doctor, she could easily make a career switch and go into modelling. She always laughed it off as ridiculous, but it was true for anyone who had eyes to see. With her long legs and arms and slim, fit body, she would look amazing on some runway or on the cover of some magazine.Even now, with her lustrous black hair tied up in a ponytail and her body cocooned inside the lab coat, anyone could see that she was gorgeous. They met in medical school and became good friends during their time there. After graduation, they both got jobs at the same General Hospital which helped to strengthen their bond and cement their friendship. They became so close, they were practically sisters and that helped them transition into what they were now, partners... of the business kind, not the sexual kind despite what some people thought.Through the several trials and problems of medical school and working under different kinds of bosses, they managed to hold out because of the promise they made to each other to start their own practice where they wouldn't have to answer to anyone.Years later, on Mikayla's thirtieth birthday, they finally got that dream off the ground with some good credit scores and sound financial decisions. They finally opened the MikAnna Hospital. Thanks to some unexpected turn of fate, the Hospital gained fame and they were able to attract some good investors. The rest, they say, is history. They'd even employed more doctors. There were now almost twenty doctors working at the Hospital and triple the amount of nurses. The Hospital was doing much better than they'd ever hoped and as with everything else, that came with its bad sides. One of such bad sides was the invitation sitting on her desk. They had become famous, and their hospital with it. The result was that they soon began attracting investors who were willing to put down a ton of money. That money went towards buying good equipment they wouldn't have dreamt of having in ten to twenty years, if not more and also providing free and cheaper healthcare to their patients. But with the Hospital's fame came some expectations. For example, the fact that they were now expected to attend certain kinds of social events.Mikayla would rather not attend such events. In fact, she averred it with a passion for several deep-rooted reasons but to appease their investors, she often had to put aside her personal feelings and attend. But Anna was the opposite. She loved these events and basked in them. Every opportunity to attend one was like a Christmas gift to her, and she absolutely refused to go without Mikayla at her side."It's literally for a good cause," Anna said in a scandalized voice that cried that she couldn't believe her friend would even consider not going; like it was the worst thing she'd ever heard.Mikayla sighed. "It's always for a good cause," she reminded her friend. Every single event was to raise money for some big world and health issue, and every single time her friend made the same argument. This particular one was for...she took a peak at the invite...cancer."My presence or absence at the event wouldn't make any difference in whether a cure is discovered for cancer or not," she pointed out, just like she did for every other cause. And just like Anne did each time, she rolled her eyes and said, "It certainly can't hurt. Plus you know the investors like to see us at these things. This is our opportunity to give back to them."Mikayla sighed. She often wondered if when you fell within a particular ballpark of the upper economic echelons, you were immediately strong-armed into holding these kinds of events. She found them tedious at best.Sadly, the set of people who could afford to dump several hundreds of dollars into their Hospital were the same ones who hosted these events. To not go would be an unimaginable slight, or so Anne believed.Sometimes at those parties, there were so many more important people that no one seemed to notice them anyway. She doubted they would be missed if they didn't show up to one once in a while but try convincing Anne of that. But Anna always insisted that they attend each one. Mikayla, knowing her friend, knew that her motives weren't exactly pure. It wasn't out of the goodness of her heart and her empathy for those suffering from one debilitating disease or the next that kept her going backNo, it was her astonishing love of parties and rubbing shoulders with the rich and mighty; two things that Mikayla hated and wanted nothing to do with. How many times had she kept Mikayla awake in the night with wild imaginations of catching some billionaire's attention and being swept away in a wave of romance and wealth? Too many times to count.Sadly, so far, that hadn't happened. The only thing the men she'd met so far wanted from her was sex. So again they spent many nights bemoaning the rich, playboy, f*ckboys of the world.Mikayla didn't care for any of the things her friends wanted. In fact, she made sure to stay out of situations where such a thing could occur. The last thing she wanted was to catch anyone's attention. Hell, she didn't even even date regularly. But Mikayla had always had a soft spot for her friend so each and every time, such an issue came up, Anna had succeeded in dragging her to the events after all. Even now, the smile on Anna's face said that she knew her friend was already getting tired of arguing and would give in soon.As one final feeble attempt to get Anna to let her be, Mikayla tried one last tactic, "Why don't you go by yourself this time? Maybe without me there, you'll have a better chance of fulfilling your dream."As expected, Anna simply rolled her eyes. "Nice try. You're coming with me." There was a beeping sound and Anna and Mikayla both scrambled to find their beepers. "It's mine." Anna waved her beeper. "I have to go. Pick out something nice to wear!" She called over her shoulder as she rushed out of Mikayla's office."Ugh," Mikayla groaned and flopped face down on her desk. Maybe she should have just continued working at the General Hospital instead. Running a private Hospital was starting to feel like a pain in the ass."No, that's not true," Mikayla corrected herself. She loved her job. She loved treating her patients. She loved making the Hospital a safe space for the workers and patients. She loved everything about her job... except this.Maybe she should be thankful. Most people didn't even get to do what they loved. She did. Attending a few fundraisers here and there should be a small price to pay.She just had to do as she had always done; not draw any attention to herself. Pop in, shake a few hands, smile here and there, take some pictures and exit at the closest window of opportunity."I can do this," she psyched herself up. "I can her through this. It's only a couple of hours. Medical school was so much harder than this, Mikayla. Working at the General Hospital, now that was a doozy. This is nothing compared to that. Just keep your cool and power through it."Just as she was completing her affirmations, the door opened and one of her nurses on duty, Kim, stuck her head in. "Shall I call in the next patient, Dr. Wall?" She asked. As always, Mikayla winced at that name. No matter how many times she'd tried to get Kim to call her by her name, the lady simply refused. Kim was the nurse who'd been with them the longest; their first hire at the Hospital. After all these years, she still maintained the highest levels of professionalism in dealing with Mikayla despite her best efforts to be more cordial with her. Five years down the line, Mikayla had accepted fate and left it to the woman to address her as she preferred.Mikayla had almost completely forgotten about her patients waiting outside since Anna barged in earlier, waving the invitation in the air like a winning lottery ticket. Her partner must have given the order to hold all patients while she was in.Mikayla straightened in her chair and adjusted her white coat. It was time to work. No time for dilly-dallying or worrying over the event. Her duty first and foremost was to her patients and she took that very seriously."Yes, Kim. Please let them in," she directed.By the time Mikayla walked in, the party was in full swing. She stood close to the entrance, mentally preparing herself to enter into the throng she was looking at. She briefly considered tucking tail and running but she'd promised Anna she'd be here so she couldn't leave.Speaking of Anna, she stretched her neck discreetly, looking for her friend in the crowd but there were so many people that she couldn't possibly spot her like this. She would have to wade into the waters."Suck it up and just go," she chided herself and with a deep breath, she walked further into the room. She kept up a running commentary in her mind at every second. It served the dual purpose of distracting her and reminding her to observe all the expected social observances.Remember to smile. Smile at him. Nod at her. Ugh, don't stop or he'll start talking to you. Yup, best avoid that one too. On and on, it went as she navigated her way around the room. Thanks to attending such events time and time again, almost
Cael didn't like attending the social events that members of his class kept springing up. They were monotonous, had the exact same faces and always ended with him parting with an outrageous sum of money for one outrageous cause after the other. But when you belonged to the economic class that Cael belonged to, attendance was almost mandatory. Tonight it was a fundraiser for patients with cancer, at least it was a worthy cause. Now, Cael didn't care much for social rules and cues and whatnot so he hardly ever attended no matter how many invitations he got. None of it appealed to him. It never had. Not the peacocking, not the mindless conversations and not even the attention he could never really avoid.Even now, the birds were swarming. Cael kept his face straight and his eyes constantly moving so that an errant glance wouldn't be taken by the roosts as a signal to approach. His disinterest wouldn't keep them away for long though, he could tell.Already the excitement was mountain. Th
Mikayla angled her body, trying her best to pass through the crowd without brushing against anyone. She needed to get out immediately. It was irrational, it was probably unnecessary, but all she knew was that she had to get away. She'd never felt anything quite like that before. It felt like a thousand ants underneath her skin where his eyes touched her. She needed to get out and catch her breath. She risked a look in his direction to see if he was still looking.Oh no, he wasn't just looking at her now. He was actually following her, barraging through the crowd at an angle that ensured that he would reach her before she reached the door. No! No! No! She increased her pace, and from the corner of her eyes, she saw him do the same.Who was this man anyway? Why was he following her? She couldn't risk another look at him. It would slow her down. She shouldn't have come. She silently cursed Anna's persistence. Now she was being chased around by a staring psycho. She briefly considered bre
Mikayla whirled around. Her eyes immediately landed on the lean, handsome man in front of her. Her heart raced at having him standing in front of her, so close that she could reach out and touch him. It didn't help that those piercing eyes were on her either.Mikayla gulped. It took all of her mental strength to keep her mouth from dropping open like an idiot. Up close, he was even more handsome, nearing perfection. His perfectly shaped jaw stood at a proud angle. His skin was clear and bright like a woman's. His eyelashes were long and curled. With eyelashes like that, you constantly wanted to reach out and stroke his face. They were the only thing that softened his harsh features. Without those feminine eyelashes, his eyes would look too scary. Even now, they were piercing and hot. Mikayla mentally shook her head. She needed to get herself together. He was looking at her expectantly as though waiting for something. What was he waiting for? Oh, right. He asked a question. What was
Move, Mikayla. Turn around right now and leave! He's giving you a chance to walk away, you idiot. Leave, damn it! But Mikayla didn't leave; couldn't leave. She continued to stand there like an idiot. When enough time had passed that it was clear she wasn't going to leave, he smiled. "I'm glad you decided to stay."Mikayla groaned in her head. "Well, I'm not glad but my body wouldn't listen to me," she thought but didn't say it out loud."We should talk outside, away from the noise...and the probing eyes." He shot a meaningful look into the crowd.Mikayla looked up just in time to see eyes darting away from them because of the look he gave them. She needed to get out of there immediately. She nodded. "Let's go." She followed him out of the hall and into the night. She expected him to stop in front of the hall or a small distance from it but he continued to march on like a man on a mission. She had no choice but to follow him. For the first time, it crossed her mind that this man could
After the declaration, Cael didn't move. He just sat there and watched her face. He wanted to see her reaction before doing it. The way he phrased the statement showed that he was resolute about kissing her, but he still waited for her permission before doing it.Perhaps that was what got to Mikayla or maybe it was the fact that she'd also wanted the exact same thing all evening as much as she may deny it. Mikayla closed her eyes and slightly tilted her head. There was no more hesitation from him after that. That was the kind of man he was, she was coming to understand. He decided what we wanted to do and immediately plunged head-first into it.He grasped her face firmly in his palms and pulled her head closer. His lips slammed down on hers. There was nothing gentle about the kiss, just as she'd expected. It was hard, it was demanding and it was unyielding. His lips forced her lips apart and thrust inside, quickly ravishing her mouth. Mikayla moaned against his lips. She met his deman
Cael woke up instantly, coming alert the moment his brain woke. He was acutely aware of his surroundings as always and knew without opening his eyes that he was alone in the car. The woman had vanished. He sat up and scanned the beach, hoping to catch a glimpse of her escaping but she was nowhere to be seen. How she managed to get out of the car without rousing him was a mystery to him. What was she, a nymph? That would explain the uncharacteristic effect she had on him. She'd done nothing less than bewitching him without even lifting a finger. He never slept so deeply that he became unaware of his surroundings. She would have moved around, maybe gotten dressed, opened the door and left and he hadn't felt anything? It just went to show how much of an effect she had on him. With her in his arms, he'd slept like a baby. He couldn't remember sleeping that deeply in a very long time. And that had cost him. She was gone, vanished into thin hair. He ran a hand through his hair. It was a ha
Mikayla knew exactly what she had to do, what she desperately needed to do. But yet, her heart felt heavy. Don't be stupid, she told herself. She had to disappear, and immediately. To get herself going, she repeated the words that had plagued her mind from childhood over and over in her head like a mantra."The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."Spurred into action, she moved quietly but firmly, first locating her bra, then her dress. But her panties were nowhere to be found. She couldn't risk searching too vigorously for it or she'd end up waking him.She pulled on the bra and the dress as quietly and calmly as she could. This was a car so if she moved around too much, it would shake and wake him up."The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."Heck, she'd have to leave the panties behind if she wanted to be gone before he woke up. There was no telling how long he would sleep for. If he woke up before she left, there would be no escaping. If there was one thing she'd learnt about
Mikayla watched as the maid diligently turned the pot of soup. "I think you should add some more water," she directed."Yes, ma'am," the girl said and went to grab a cup of water from the tap."Mummy! Mummy!" Mikayla looked down at the kid pulling frantically on her cloth. "What is it, Abe?" She asked."Can I turn the soup too?" He asked, giving her a big smile. His adorable face made her smile. She shook her head. He knew exactly what he was doing! The boy was too aware of his own good looks. He thought it could help him get away with anything and get anything he wanted."No, Abe. You can't and you know it," she said."But mummm! I'm a big boy now. I'm seven years old," he argued. He'd only turned seven three days ago and already they'd heard that fact at least a million times. It came up in every argument including when it was his bedtime, when he needed to eat his vegetables and just any other time he could squeeze the argument into."Seven is too young to play around the sto
Mikayla looked at herself in the full length mirror and smiled. 'You look very beautiful,' she thought to herself. 'And I'm so proud of you.'She'd come a very long way from the scared little girl who lived everyday in fear of people finding out her true identity. Now, she was a strong, beautiful woman with a thriving career and an amazing boyfriend. And today, she would be celebrating another incredible milestone in her career at a beautiful ball. What more could a person ask for? Mikayla's heart was filled with gratitude."What's up? Are you ready," Anna asked from behind her, coming to stand with her.Mikayla looked at her friend in the mirror. "Yes, I'm ready. You look incredible." Anna wore a long velvet dress with dramatically big sleeves. "Thank you! You look wonderful too," she answered.Mikayla nodded, turning back and forth as she looked at herself in the mirror. "Yes, I do," she said."Oh," Anna's eyes widened. "That is the first time I've ever heard you acknowledge that
"Hello?" Mikayla said tiredly into the phone. "What's up?" "Hi, love," Cael's voice said over the speaker."Oh, hi, Cael! Sorry, I didn't look at the screen when I picked the call!" She was barely keeping her eyes open so she'd simply swiped without looking.Cael chuckled. "That tired, Hun? Well, you're about to come wide awake. I have good news."Mikayla perked up immediately. "Really?" She said, sitting up. "What is it?""Remember that call I got at your house?" He asked."Yes," Mikayla answered. How could she forget? She'd found herself thinking about it from time to time. He'd managed to distract her that night but she'd been wondering about it since then. Especially because Cael seemed to be in a perpetual good mood since the call. He walked around the house whistling. She'd even caught him smiling to himself a few times. The horror!"Well, you remember that meeting we had withr Marcus a while back about expanding the hospital?""How could I forget?" she said."Well, I got
Mikayla stood in front of the door to her beloved home. It'd been two weeks since she last stepped here. During those two weeks, she was staying with Cael at his mansion. She'd finally summoned the courage to come back and pack up Abe's stuff. She took a deep breath and turned the key. Suddenly there was a revving sound behind her. Mikayla turned around to see Cael's cars pulling into her driveway. "What are you doing here?" She asked in surprise."I couldn't let you face this alone. I'm here to help," he answered, walking up to her.She smiled. "But you didn't tell me you were coming! We spoke about me coming here this morning."He smiled back. "I wanted to surprise you," he said. "Are you ready to go in?"Mikayla nodded. "I was just psyching myself up to go in when I heard your car pull in. I guess I just have to rip the band-aid off and get it over with."He nodded. "I'll help you." He opened the door and entered first. Mikayla followed behind him.She looked around her house.
"Good morning, boss," Nurse Rachel called cheerfully to Mikayla as she came into work that morning."Morning," Mikayla answered quietly and headed into her office.Rachel caught Kim's eyes and raised a brow in a silent question. "What now?"Nurse Kim shook her head and nodded towards the office. "Go do your job," she said.Rachel sighed and went after Mikayla. She met her putting on her coat. "Dr Wall, is everything okay?"Mikayla gave her a tight smile. "Everything is fine, thank you."Rachel raised a brow. Obliviously everything was not fine. But she didn't press the issue. She decided to ask a different question."And how is Abe doing this morning? We've missed him a lot! The night shift nurses were shocked to hear that he'd been discharged. They made me swear to ask you to bring him in one of these days do they can say hello."A lump developed in Mikayla's throat. She swallowed thickly. Her eyes watered. She turned away from Rachel so she wouldn't see. "Abe is no longer with me
After Cael handed Abe over to Michelle, Mikayla fell into a pool of grief. She sat listlessly on the floor for what could have been minutes, hours or seconds. She was completely unaware of Armani's gentle presence, rocking her gently. At some point, Armani left to go home and still she didn't notice. When Cael decided that she'd been on the floor long enough, he picked her up to take her to the bedroom. At that moment, something inside of her snapped. With a snarl, Mikayla launched herself at Cael and began pounding at him.He fell on his butt in surprise. She pounded him with every ounce of strength in her body. She hit every inch of skin she could reach, growling like a wounded animal with each punch. There was so much pent up fury in her head with no exit route. So she pounded it out.Cael took the beating like a champ. He sat rock still and waited for her to finish, pinning her with those black, glittering hawk-like eyes. "How could you! How could you!" Mikayla snarled in
Michelle stood in Cael's doorway, clad in an expensive designer coat that barely reached halfway to her thighs. She also spotted glittering silver shoes that probably cost more than Mikayla's phone!"What the hell are you doing here?" Mikayla exclaimed.Cael heard the sound of her voice and came running to the door, Abe in his arms. "Mum!" Abe squealed as soon as he saw her and reached for her."My sweet boy!" She cooed, taking him from Cael. "Did you miss me? I missed you a lot.""I asked you a question," Mikayla repeated through clenched teeth. "What the hell are you doing here?""Is that any way to talk to your mother?" Michelle chastened and walked into the house, almost shouldering past them. She headed straight to the living room as if the place belonged to her."Do you know how difficult it was to find you?" She demanded, oblivious to the shock and discomfort of the rest of them. She sat comfortably. "I went by your house and there was no one there. It didn't seem like anyo
Armani pressed the doorbell again. The sound caused Mikayla to jump. She self-consciously ran her hand over her hair and body, making sure everything was in place. Armani often had that effect on her. She was always so beautiful, well put together and chic. She made Mikayla feel like a slob. She opened the door and smiled nervously at Armani. "Hi.""Hello," Armani said. "Can I come in?"It strick Mikayla as odd that she was asking her if she could come in. From what she knew, Armnai frequented Cael's house as often as she wanted. They were that close. So why did she feel the need to ask her?"Yes, of course," she answered and stepped back for her.Armani walked in and stood waiting. Mikayla blinked. "Erm...this way." She shut the door and led Armani to the living room. "Cael is asleep right now but I can wake him up if you want..." Armani smiled and shook her head. She sat down. "Don't bother. I didn't come to see him anyway. I came to see you."Mikayla sat down slowly. "To see
Mikayla was embarrassed! She was in the middle of a small crowd that had gathered in front of the hospital to see Abe off. In three days, he'd managed to become the hospital sweetheart. Every time she went to see him in his room, she met at least three hospital staff at a time fawning over him.Meanwhile, Abe basked in the attention he was getting in the hospital. The little celebrity had been showered with so many gifts that there was hardly space left in his room. So much so that he kicked off a fuss when she told him he would be going home today. At least his new friends had come out to bid him goodbye!Right now, he was in the arms of one of the nurses while the other crowded around him. They were waiting for Cael to pull the car around. Sweet Cael! He's been on ground these past three days, taking care of Mikayla and Abe simultaneously. It was Cael who'd brought her change of clothes each day. It was Cael who'd ordered food for her and made sure everything was fine while
