Jade

I chuckled as I looked down at the basket in my hand, filled to the brim with colourful candies. Here I was, acting Alpha of the pack, yet my mother still insisted on sending me on errands for the little ones. Some things never changed. It was funny, really, especially when I remembered how I’d once loved this task—how I’d look forward to Rowan sneaking up behind me, making my heart race and filling me with those ridiculous butterflies.

But things were different now, as they should be.

I shook off the thought and strode toward the packhouse, smiling at the familiar sights and sounds of the pack. As I stepped inside, one of the Omegas quickly spotted me and walked over, her usual warm smile lighting up as she reached for the basket. "Thank goodness you're here, Alpha. The kids have been craving these, and they wouldn’t stop crying about it!"

I let out a small laugh. “Sorry, I should’ve come sooner.”

I’d barely finished speaking before a young girl’s voice piped up from the side. "

JadeExhaustion weighed on me as I approached the door to my house, barely able to keep my eyes open after the chaos at the pack house. Between the relentless questions from the kids and another unwanted encounter with Rowon’s child again, I was utterly drained. Just as I reached for the door, my mother’s voice slipped into my mind, piercing right through my fatigue.“Jade, baby, where are you?”I rolled my eyes; her timing was, as always, impeccable. She’d been the one to send me on that dreadful task to hand out candy to the kids at the pack house, and now she wondered where I’d gone off to? All I wanted was to collapse on my bed and sleep until the world faded away.I sighed, letting sarcasm lace my words as I replied through the mindlink. “Oh, you know, just running the pack and babysitting everyone else’s responsibilities.”Her amused chuckle came through, and I could practically see her smirking. “If you’re not close to home, come to the private garden.”I bit back a groan, glan

Darius I wiped the sweat from my brow, feeling the burn in my muscles as I surveyed the group of warriors sprawled on the training grounds. They panted and shook, clearly worn out from the relentless drills. Today, I’d pushed them harder than usual, teaching them techniques my old master once drilled into me.“All right, enough,” I called, my voice ringing with authority. “We’ll pick up where we left off tomorrow.”The warriors groaned with relief, exchanging looks of exhaustion and gratitude before dispersing. For me, training was just one part of the endless responsibilities of a chief commander. Planning, strategizing, and, lately, dealing with pack politics seemed never-ending. I’d lost track of how many hours I’d been out here. My body was heavy with fatigue, and I decided I’d earned a long, scalding shower. When I stepped through the door of the Clawson estate, I pulled off my shirt, tossing it over my shoulder as I headed for the stairs. But the sight of someone lounging in th

Jade’s POVI took a step back, admiring the final touches on my new office. The walls were painted a calming shade of blue, the kind that reminded me of early dawn, rich and promising. My father hadn’t spared any expense; shelves of dark wood, brass fixtures, and an expansive desk were carefully arranged to convey authority yet ease. This space was a reminder that I was acting Alpha now, and he’d made it clear I couldn’t just lounge around in my room anymore or find excuses to avoid responsibility.“Omegas, set the files on the left shelves and the meeting notes near the desk,” I instructed, motioning to a small stack of documents waiting to be organised. The Omegas nodded respectfully, hurrying to complete the task. Just as I turned to review the files, I heard the door click open, and my new beta, Liliana, entered with a confident stride. Her presence was commanding, almost electric. She was beautiful, powerful, and radiated this effortless sense of authority. Sometimes, I still cou

JadeFor a few agonising seconds, uncomfortable silence hung thick in the air. I could feel Darius’s gaze searing into me, every second a quiet demand I wasn’t ready to answer, and it took everything in me not to shift under his scrutiny. My eyes darted around the room until they landed on the chair across from me, and I awkwardly pointed to it.“Why don’t you… take a seat?” I said quietly. I just needed him to sit further away, somewhere that would let me keep my head straight.Darius followed my gaze, his lips pressing into a barely restrained smile as he looked at the chair. It looked ridiculously small next to his powerful frame, almost laughable. I swallowed hard, feeling heat creep up my neck.“Actually, maybe…” I gestured to the larger chair nearer to me, hoping he wouldn’t notice how nervous I felt. He nodded, stepping closer and lowering himself into it. The air between us felt tighter now; every inch he moved closer, making it harder to ignore how his presence stirred someth

Jade Lilian’s gaze stayed glued to Darius, her eyes wide and too focused, like seeing him had knocked the air out of her. The silence stretched, uncomfortable and strange, making my nerves spike. I cleared my throat, hoping to break the awkward tension."You must have seen him around Mrs. Clawson's house," I said, trying to sound casual. "She’s his mother."Lilian blinked, breaking eye contact with Darius. “Actually, no, I… I haven’t,” she replied calmly, though there was a flicker in her eyes that betrayed her. “Once, I thought I saw a shadow built like him, but it... disappeared too fast.”I nodded, feeling a tiny prickle of doubt but deciding not to press. I didn’t want to make things any more awkward than they already were. "Right," I said, forcing a small smile. "So, why did you stop by, Lilian?”Her face softened, and she bent down to retrieve the file she'd dropped. “I wanted to help you with this.” She extended it to me, her hands steady. “They’re contacts I know—good people,

Jade’s POV“Da—Darius.”The name slipped out before I could stop it, as if speaking it aloud would shatter the spell he seemed to cast over me. My pulse quickened as I stared up at him, surprised—I had expected him to be tucked away somewhere, whispering secret words with Lilian, just as my gut had warned me. But here he was, standing right before me, his eyes locked on mine with a look that was almost... challenging.Darius extended his hand, that maddeningly cocky grin plastered across his face. I took a shaky breath, fists clenched with the urge to wipe that grin off him so strong I could almost taste it.“Darius,” I repeated, my voice sharp with accusation. Pushing myself up, I dusted the dirt from my hands, facing him fully, my eyes narrowing. His cocky grin only widened, one brow arching with infuriating casualness. “What?” he asked, his tone light, almost mocking.“You said there was training going on here,” I shot back, crossing my arms. “Where is everyone?”He shrugged, his g

JadeI took a deep breath, finally pushing Darius from my mind as I closed the last file with a satisfying snap. My desk was cluttered with papers and research notes, all narrowed down to one goal: finding the best scientist to help us develop the weapons we needed to take on Alpha Jericho and any future threats that dared challenge us. Lilian’s file had been a godsend; she’d gathered names and contacts I would have struggled to find on my own. I made a mental note to thank her next time I saw her.Lilian was a good beta, and with her help, all that was left was to show Darius the list and set up meetings with these experts as soon as possible. The last thing we needed was for Jericho to catch wind of our plans and get a head start. I stretched, feeling the fatigue settle in my bones as I leaned back and rolled my shoulders, wincing at the stiffness. When I glanced out the window, I was surprised to see it was already evening. Jade After the unexpected attack on the pack, Darius and I wasted no time organising meetings with scientists. Now, five days later, we found ourselves in a secret laboratory that seemed more like a fortress than a workplace. The lab was bathed in cold, sterile white light, the kind that left everything sharp and cold. It stretched wide, with rows of polished metal counters lined with vials, wires, and gleaming weapon prototypes that looked as deadly as they were sophisticated. Scientists in pristine lab coats moved around like ghosts, focused and determined, their heads bent over blueprints or screens flickering with code, adjusting equipment that hummed quietly with raw power. This place was a fortress of secrets, a weapon lab hidden from the world—a sanctuary of destruction waiting to be unleashed. Darius and I had sworn the scientists protection, wealth, and land in return for their work, promises that would be fulfilled once we won the war. Darius was right—we didn’t know what

Darius The air in the interrogation room was thick with tension, and the sharp scent of blood clung to everything. I studied the two captives before me, both battered, bruised, and visibly shaken. Their faces were pale, and their bodies trembled, every twitch betraying the fear simmering beneath their defiance. They’d seen what I was capable of; they knew this was far from a game.I leaned against the wall, letting the silence stretch uncomfortably, intensifying their fear. The taller of the two men shifted, glancing nervously at his partner before muttering."Please... spare our lives. We don’t want to die.” he stammered.I allowed a cold smirk to spread across my face. “Oh, now you care about your lives?” I muttered with cold amusement, twirling a blade between my fingers. Its edge glinted under the dim light, catching their wide, terrified eyes every time it spun. “If that’s true, all you need to do is talk. Doesn’t sound too hard, does it?”They said nothing; they just sat there s

Jade"Darius, please," I whispered, though I knew he could hear the tension trembling in my voice—it was impossible to hide my anxiety. "Tell me... what kind of woman is Lilian? No—better yet, who exactly is her father?"Darius looked up from the documents, pausing mid-turn of the page, his brows knitting together as he studied me. “Why the sudden interest in my ex-mate?”I pressed my lips together, clenching my fists, frustration and anxiety mixing uncomfortably in my chest. I knew I should let it go, and I also didn't want to tell him how much Lilian’s words had haunted me since our run-in, the way they clung like thorns. “Urgh!” I huffed, throwing up my hands, my pulse a drumming I could feel everywhere. “Can’t I be curious? Why are you acting so defensive?”He sighed, setting the papers down as his eyes softened. “It’s not about that. It’s just…” He hesitated, his gaze searching, as though the right words were somewhere hidden between us. “I don’t feel comfortable talking about he

Slowly, I blinked away the remnants of sleep, my eyes adjusting to the morning light, and there he was—Darius, his gaze burning into me with such intensity it stole my breath. The depth in his eyes was something I’d never seen before—an unguarded tenderness and love so fierce that it tightened something in my chest. I realised, with a thrill, that I could feel him now—his emotions mingling with mine in the bond we’d created, a vivid, unmistakable presence in my heart.“Good morning, beautiful,” he murmured, his voice low, barely breaking the stillness.Unable to hold back a smile, I snuggled closer, pressing my face into his chest and letting myself breathe him in. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me closer, his touch gentle but steady. I felt… safe. Truly safe.I had just begun to relax again when my mother’s voice rang up from downstairs. “Jade! JadeI looked into Darius' intense, burning eyes; my heart swelled with emotion. I’d always been drawn to them—that deep, captivating gaze that seemed to see right through me. Now, knowing he’s loved me for so long, his sincerity is almost overwhelming in its purity. It was time to sever any bond or oath I had left with Rowan for good, just as Althea had warned. I could take that risk now, and with the two of us alone at my house, this was my chance. It was now or never."I want you, Darius," I whispered. "Not just now, but for always. We've wasted so much time, and I don't want to delay our bond any further."His brow furrowed, a look of anxious concern flickering across his face. “Jade, are you sure? I know learning about my feelings has been sudden... and after everything with Rowan, I don’t want you to feel pressured or obligated.”I tilted my head, clenching my fists at my sides. “Don’t you understand, Darius? The image of Liliana lingered—she was effortlessly beautiful, the kind of woman any man would dream of. Even I, a woman, could see it. And yet… Darius had rejected her. He’d turned down that perfect, goddess-like creature—for me?Crazy. The silence between us was heavy, but I couldn't bring myself to break it. A knot formed in my stomach as anger bubbled up, not because of Liliana’s beauty but because Darius had kept her existence a secret. Why didn’t he tell me? He knows how much I hated secrets and couldn't stand them. And now with Rowan lurking, circling like a vulture waiting for any chance to tear us apart... to pounce on any weakness... he let Rowan get under my skin by handing him this opportunity on a silver platter.I didn’t even know where I was leading him, only that I needed to be somewhere private, somewhere I could yell at him without an audience. Darius If someone had told me Jade would one day look at me with that spark in her eyes and say she was beginning to feel something for me... God, I wouldn’t have believed it. Hell, I would’ve laughed in their faces. But hearing those words... knowing she’s finally falling for me... nothing in this world could compare. The sound of her voice, the softness in her gaze—all I could think was how lucky I was. She said she cared deeply for me, and those words made me feel like the happiest man alive.Funny how my mother’s madness ended up bringing out this side of Jade, forcing her to reveal her loyalty and her feelings. And now, hearing her say she feels something for me... I’d give her the world. No—I already promised myself. I’d rather break every bone in my body than break her heart. I’d fight for her, for us, with everything in me.I wanted to hold her, protect her, and make her laugh for the rest of our lives. JadeMy gaze was locked on Darius’s mother, and for a second, she looked shocked, as if I’d slapped her across the face, and then anger simmered to the surface. Her hand slammed down on the table with such force that all the dishes rattled, some even lifting briefly before settling back down. I felt the jolt through my whole body, but I held my ground, refusing to look away.“Don’t you ever call me ‘mother-in-law,’” she spat, her eyes narrowing with venom. “I would never want someone like you for my son. You might be his mate, but that means nothing to me. You’ve hurt him, and you’re risking his life. If you had an ounce of decency, you’d end this relationship before it drags him down any further.”Heat crept up my neck, and I clenched my fists at my sides. I wanted to snap and fire back, but I took a deep breath, knowing that lashing out would only feed and fuel her disdain. Still, I couldn’t stop the small, mocking smile tugging at my lips as I raised an eyebrow.“Then, I suppose it

Everyone was seated, but no one spoke, and the silence pressed down on me. I was acutely aware of Darius’s hand brushing against mine under the table, his touch a small comfort in this unnerving atmosphere. I sat beside him, holding onto that small touch, drawing strength from it as his family’s unreadable faces seemed to study my every move, especially his mother’s.
