Asher

I was currently borrowing Ryker’s makeshift office that he had set up at Ronnie’s house since he was here more often than anywhere else, but my mind was on the wheat blonde-colored she-wolf  who was out in the back yard, enjoying the unseasonably warm day with the little girl who lived here.

I couldn’t get Mari’s stunning hazel eyes, or the freckles I had seen sporadically spread across her face and the rest of her visible skin, to leave my mind long enough to focus on the task I was supposed to be completing, which was pretty damn important.

Roughly shaking my head, I picked up the phone to dial my beta, Nicolai. I had been away from my province for far too long with all the shit happening here in the Southern Territory and the elders fleeing to only Luna knew where.

Nic picked up on the third ring, and he proceeded to give me a detailed account of the happenings in my province.

I felt uneasy about his report regarding the rogues’ strange behavior, it adding to the threat in my mind about what Reese had warned us about with the bears’ movement, and I was nervous in general with my males being scattered so much throughout the territories.

There weren’t many of us left to begin with, but I had to take the risk of spreading security thin back home in order to give my males a chance at finding their soulmates.

Regardless, I was beyond grateful to be granted my own mate, and I would take things as slowly as Mari wanted so long as she didn’t outright reject me. However, my strain increased the longer I was away from my home, and the incessant tugging of our mating bond was driving me crazy.

While I had watched my friends meet their own true mates, I had learned it wouldn’t be an easy feat getting my other half to accept our Moon Goddess’ blessing after all that I’d witnessed.

Hell, Reese was still battling his way into his own mates’ heart, but I was fucking ecstatic I finally had someone to call mine after all the shit we’d been through with the elders and the bears.

At the same time, my lust for my mate only increased as the days ticked by. I could sense she was just as hungry for me, but I also realized part of her shyness was due to her innocence.

I gave her space at first, simply observing her as she interacted with others, and I noticed she was more relaxed when there were only one or two people around, though her whole being lit up when Roxi was in the room.

Man, she’d make an amazing mother someday, and the thought caused my head to jump to what she would look like when she was round with my child.

My wolf was sold on my plan, but I knew it would be a while until my vision became a reality with how skittish my mate was for the time being.

My attention roamed as I kept watch over the girls’ house while Jax and Ryker explored the pack house with their mates, and I landed on the odd event that had occurred with Mari earlier this afternoon as I kept my eyes and ears on high alert.

Roxi had been tottering around the kitchen while my mate fetched her something to drink, but I saw Mari bring the cup to her nose before she added the water and ice.

At first, I’d thought her action was funny, laughing as she handed the toddler her cup, but then she’d meekly defended herself, saying, “I know it seems weird, but it’s a leftover habit from my childhood. My mother was stupid enough to believe no one would know she was drinking alcohol if she poured it into a cup.”

Her voice increased in volume as she persisted, forcing herself to finish gritting out the last of her explanation as I felt every bit the asshole.

“The thing is, she was too wasted most of the time to bother washing it when she was done. She would put it back in the cabinet for someone else to take care of. I got tired of tasting the bitter shit every time I got something to drink.”

I sensed her repressed anger shining through as she spat out the last word, but I also saw the tension in her hunched shoulders as she looked away from me. I replayed our encounter in my head, but I couldn’t understand the nerves I noticed after she finished her speech.

Initially, I believed she might have been worried about me with the threat of the bears when I left to run a circuit around the house, but we weren’t expecting them until tomorrow at the earliest. I had done my best to comfort her before shifting into my wolf, but I knew I hadn’t totally accomplished my goal.

My patrol was more of a formality to make sure everyone remained safe while the others were busy searching, but the elders were a real threat, nevertheless.

Nothing was amiss in my surroundings as my wolf rambled through the trees, but I couldn’t say the same for my mind as I pieced together the hints Mari had given me at last.

I may not be the smartest lupine out of the bunch, but I knew it took a ridiculous amount of alcohol to get a shifter drunk, which meant my mate’s mother wasn’t a shifter at all.

I was beginning to understand Mari’s hesitancy with diving straight into a relationship. She clearly had secrets she was trying to figure out how to share, but Ryker’s voice broke into my thoughts as he cautioned me about the network of tunnels they had discovered beneath the pack house before I could explore this new information.

Refocusing on my task for now, I finished circling the immediate area around the building my mate was in, but I didn’t spend much time in the section that crossed into the town, knowing the hazard wouldn’t come from that direction.

Once I made it back to her house, I shifted long enough to creep inside to let Mari know what was going on, but as I stepped outside, my ears picked up on the evident sounds of fighting in the distance.

I directed Mari to retreat upstairs with the little one who was fortunately still napping, transforming back into my wolf to face the oncoming threat, but I didn’t detect any odors, telling me it was the bears who had decided to attack early.

Knowing Ryker had wolves set up throughout the territory to help defend the land in case of a sudden assault, I forced myself to remain fixed in place as I sounded the alarm through mind link, but I felt better when Remus and another male joined me to form a united front as the first of the bear shifters broke free from the underbrush.

Instantaneously, I launched myself forward, dodging as a huge paw swung in my direction before I used the grizzly’s distraction to gouge my claws into his unprotected chest when he’d reared up on his hind legs.

Remus sidled up, throwing off the brown bear’s attention again, and I seized the opportunity, tearing into his exposed throat before he could recover.

Any shifter who was brave enough to try to make it past our line of defense was promptly shown the other end of our deadly teeth and claws, but I noticed my comrades were not at full strength as the brawl went on.

I overcompensated as a result, taking more damage than I should have as I ensured that neither of my allies sustained life-threatening injuries, but I knew I would heal at a faster rate, so I didn’t let the minor aggravations slow me down.

Needless to say, none of the interlopers lived to see another day, and none of the wounds I’d suffered mattered in the end, happiness flooding my system as I took in Mari’s worried expression fading into relief when I told her the danger was gone a while later.

I barely resisted the urge to wrap her in my arms as my adrenaline waned, but I was sure she wouldn’t appreciate the gore coating her delicate skin.

Following, I assisted the others with combing through the territory in search of any straggling bears and to help with the cleanup from the aftermath, ending my efforts a few hours later with a steamy shower at my lodge before I returned to Ronnie’s house for my mate.

Nonetheless, my libido sparked to life de novo in Mari’s presence, making it hard to refrain from outright dragging her from the room like the neanderthal I felt like in the moment.

Mercifully, the bulk of the discussion was postponed, and I whisked my other half away before anyone could change their minds, leading her to my temporary residence and locking the door behind us as I shut it tightly once we’d arrived.

Then, I eyed her carefully, looking for any signs of objection as I marched right up into her personal space and sealed my lips over hers.

Her mouthwatering flavor had me groaning, and I couldn’t stop myself from grabbing a handful of her hair to tilt her head in the perfect angle for me to plunder her mouth.

I kept one hand grasping her waist and the other rooted in her tresses as I coaxed my tongue into her mouth, savoring her moan of approval as I gripped her tighter against me, but she pulled her head back after a minute when I hefted her into my arms, striding through the lodge with her secure in my hold.

Still breathing heavily, she had trouble meeting my eyes when she said, “I think we may be moving too fast, Ash.”

I hated how she was afraid to tell me how she felt, but I would continue to work on her expressing herself more in the future.

For tonight, I pressed a soft kiss to her forehead before answering, “I don’t expect anything, gorgeous. I just want to hold you while we sleep. I need to feel you safe in my arms after what happened today.”

My explanation seemed to be enough because she didn’t say anything else, letting me carry her to my room while she bit down into her plush lower lip.

I gently set her on the bed, moving back to jerk my T-shirt over my head and taking in my mate’s wide hazel eyes as they freely ogled my muscles, afterward.

I smirked as I unfastened my jeans, my dick hardening further at the gasp she huffed out in response, but I left my undergarments on before crawling into the bed beside her. I noted she’d kicked off her shoes, but that was as far as she’d made it before her concentration zeroed in on my newly revealed skin.

“Wh…What are you doing?” Mari stammered as I observed her rapidly reddening cheeks.

“Sleeping. Normally I don’t wear anything to bed, but I didn’t think you would go for that tonight.” I answered as I pulled the blankets over the lower portion of my body when I realized her gaze hadn’t moved from my erection tenting the fabric since it’d popped up.

I could see she was embarrassed, but I felt fucking fantastic when I had her soft body tight against me a few minutes later, the smell of rainfall permeating the air.

Her natural fragrance was enhanced by her arousal, leaving my wolf and I on edge, but the events of the day speedily caught up to me, pulling me under before I knew it.

Asher I awoke fully rested the next morning with Mari lounging across my chest, but it didn’t take me long to figure out something was different from when we’d closed our eyes the night before. Lifting the corner of the blanket, I peered down, confirming that Mari had apparently shed her jeans in her sleep. My heart rate soared, and I felt my blood drain downward at the sight of my mate’s creamy thighs on display. Fisting the fabric of the bedding in my clenched hands, I only just prevented myself from reaching out to caress her smooth skin, but I couldn’t hold back my sounds of appreciation when she chose to announce that she was awake by lightly tracing her fingers down my defined abs in steady strokes, growing firmer with each pass. “Babe, don’t start something you’re not ready to finish right now. I’m more than fine with skipping the rec center altogether if it means I get to keep your hands on me for any length of time.” I ground

Marigold Driving or riding in a car was one of my least favorite activities, but I knew a vehicle was the quickest way to get to the Eastern Province. I hadn’t expected to begin our travels quite so soon, but I was immediately on board with the rushed timeline under the circumstances. While I wished I’d had more time to say goodbye to my friends and Roxi, I was also ready to begin the next stage of my life. I’d hoped for a brighter beginning, but I was accustomed to making lemonade out of the zingers life seemed to keep flinging my way. Initially, I had planned on reading during the jaunt to the East, but my nerves were shot within the first fifteen minutes with the halting way the male drove. I was certain he wasn’t truly a terrible chauffeur, but the memories of the many times my mother had operated a vehicle while blitzed out of her mind with my sister and I in the backseat had been burned into my mind like a red-hot branding iron.

Asher The somber mood hung around our heads as we ate. Mari’s gentle perfume of freshly falling rain had brought me back from the brink of the anguish that was trying its damnedest to pull me under, but I was at a loss for what to do now. An echo of the frustration my beta had experienced during the heat of the skirmish radiated through me, but I regrettably couldn’t tell him about it with his absence. I was trying to figure out where to go from here, but the only thing coursing through my mind was my need to shift and patrol a perimeter around my other half until I figured out what happened to my pack. One thing I knew for certain was that they were alive. I’d felt the connections sever when the males I found earlier had passed, that was part of the pain that had crippled me when I was in the South with Ryker. Yet, I couldn’t get a feel on where the remaining members were through the pack bond. Nothing was making sense, and m

Marigold On the whole, I wasn’t expecting for Jax to bring up the dragon shifters when Asher returned his call, but I guess I should have been with what I knew about the fire. I had already travelled far outside of my comfort zone just coming to the Eastern Province with Asher, but I couldn’t see myself being separated from his side at this point. Therefore, I knew from the second my mate had gone into more detail about Ryker’s intentions for him to seek out the dragons that I would have to go with him. The thought was speckled with apprehension, but there was a level of trust that had formed with Asher, and I felt confident he would keep me safe no matter what came our way. I was also excited with the prospect of seeing more of this world, having spent so much of my life cooped up in the humans’ territory. So, after gathering my resolve, it had been simple enough to wholeheartedly throw myself down the path life had chosen fo

Marigold I watched as my mate warred with himself over my request for a minute, but he caved in the end, my wolf virtually bursting free with enthusiasm at his eventual submission. While I knew the province wasn’t precisely the safest for the time being, I also didn’t care for the idea of being stuck by myself for hours on end again, disregarding the minor point that I needed to go through my belongings still. Asher started to lead the way outside, but I’d outpaced him in my hurry within a few steps. At any rate, before I could shift shapes, his smooth voice stopped me in order to go over some safety measures before we set off. In principle, I knew it was a smart idea to listen to him, but my inner animal didn’t give a damn right this second. I did my best to focus on my mate’s cautions, but my wolf insisted on crashing against my barriers in a desperate bid to break free all the while. The chance of the brisk air sifting thro

Marigold Asher rested one massive palm against my ass and the other against my upper back, securing me tighter against his body as he moved down the hall. My mind was spinning, but I knew I was all in for whatever my other half had in store for tonight. I’d never felt like this before, and the endorphins arising inside me as a result were spurring me to heretofore unknown heights. It was heady, and I wrapped my legs around his lean waist in a death hold as he ascended the stairs, ravenous for the bliss I’d only gotten a glimpse of so far. Alas, a hint of my fear persisted in spite of the fact that I had made up my mind, but I was able to ignore the niggling qualms with the sexual tension adding kindling to the low blaze smoldering from deep within me, drawing all my concentration. My timid actions were swiftly fading, and I let my hands rove the muscles of his shoulders as we came closer and closer to the impressive bed, feeling

Asher I was near full to bursting with the emotions coursing through me. I hadn’t been thinking when I’d sunk my teeth deep into Mari’s neck, letting my body do all the thinking for me, but I would never regret my action. I had been worried Mari wouldn’t be okay with me claiming her, especially when she didn’t bite me back, but her relaxing against me just now told me everything I needed to know. My wolf was semi-satisfied with our mate bearing our mark, but I wouldn’t deny the disappointment I felt either. Howbeit, I knew from the beginning that Mari was shy, and I had expected it to take a hell of a lot longer for us to even make it into bed. Now that we were here, I had no intention of leaving for a good amount of time, though I did divide a fraction of my attention so that I would be able to keep a watch over our surroundings with my superior senses. My dick was already hardening against her thigh de novo, and I moved my h

Hello wonderful readers, This is the end of 'The Luminary Quartet." Thank you so much for reading and for all the incredible comments y'all have left along the way. Please do me a huge favor and leave a review on the book's homepage (for this book and any of the other three if you haven't already!) I need twenty something different reviews for my rating to officially show, and the first is the only one I've managed to accomplish this with so far. My next book is titled 'After the Downfall," and the cover is already up on social media. I'm tweaking the blurb, but it will be up tomorrow, as well. I'm going to start uploading chapters this weekend to the website, but I will be getting it signed ASAP so it shows on the app, too. This book was intended to be a standalone, but I may reevaluate depending on how well it's recieved. It is another werewolf romance with a post-apocalyptic spin, but I do want to stress that this does not mean I will only be limiting myself to these types of

Marigold Five Years Later Glancing around the large clearing here to the north of Forest Glen, I let myself revel in how far we’d come over the last five years. Dragons, wolves, bears, and, hell, even a few humans, all coexisted in peace as they had since that final fight, interacting without any drama in the wide-open area before me. Granted, it wasn’t all smooth sailing at first, and there were still the occasional troublemakers to deal with every now and then. It wasn’t a walk in the park to push past the prejudice when it did occur, but we’d found that most of it was due to misinformation that my father and the other former elders had spread throughout the years. For that reason, I’d advocated for the annual gathering that we were all enjoying now, ensuring it was open to everyone. Initially, there was more friction on the human side of things, but Finn and Maverick had handled any issues on that front in the aftermath of all the mayhem my father had caused. I’d felt guilty

Nicolai was unconscious, badly injured from an ambush during his rescue mission with one of my true mates, and now both pieces of my soul were bounding off into danger de novo, my sister still in the clutches of my manipulative father. How much more fucked up could my family get? Letting the terror win as I drowned in my misery, I don’t know how long I stood there before someone broke me out of my stupor, but once the haze cleared, I was searching for some way to contribute, not wanting to be the damsel in distress. Still, I was being yanked out of the street by one of the healers before I could move an inch myself, and one look up told me the reason why. The dragons who were at the root of Nic’s suffering had decided to try their hands at finishing the job. To further complicate the situation, the humans impending arrival couldn’t

Zacharias I didn’t jump at Asher’s disruption, not surprised in the slightest. Rather, I used the opening he afforded to strike while the iron was hot, so to speak. Launching myself headfirst into the commotion, I maneuvered my arm up into the gap between Magnus’s and Iris’s bodies, using it to block the blade he still wielded as I concurrently swept his feet out from under him. The stinging ache from the knife slicing deep into the muscle of my forearm hardly registered in the heat of the moment, relief being the chief emotion in my head at averting the male’s sinister plans from coming about in his final act of desperation. Both of his fists unclenched as he tumbled to the ground with a growl, releasing Iris’s blonde tresses and the gore-splattered knife in the process. The blade clunked heavily as it dropped to the floor in front of him, and I hurried to kick it out of reach. As much as I wanted to stick around and deliver some of my own vengeance for present and past hurts, Ir

Asher One second, I was sprinting for cover as we came closer to saving Iris, my gaze pinned on a nearby building, but then Nicolai was roaring in alarm, his body crashing into me and bringing me down face first into the concrete sidewalk in front of me. The nasty collision set a chorus of bells off in my brain as my senses picked up on several things simultaneously, time seeming to slow to a crawl as anguish exploded from my head down. Heat was rapidly spreading from behind me until it became equally as unbearable as the ringing in my mind, yet I didn’t miss the agonized howl piercing the air above it all before darkness reigned, my body shutting down to protect itself. When I came too, it was by increments with pain radiating out from multiple points, but it was the ache from my face that commanded the bulk of my notice. It took me a minute to comprehend that someone else was moving my body, flipping me over so that I could see the smoke darkening the sky, and it took another on

Zacharias Finn had contacted me earlier during our flight into the Western Province. He’d let me know some of our males would be arriving throughout the day, but he’d also mentioned that he was planning to scout ahead in order to get an idea of what we were looking at. I let the others know as much before Asher and I escorted Mari up to the room, the fatigue crashing down on her all at once by the looks of it. When we returned, those that were left for the meeting had moved into the living room. Our location made no difference to me, so I took a seat in a recliner, listening as Nicolai and Asher discussed different tactics for approaching their mission to extract Iris. Mari had given us as much as she could recall of the secret route into the town earlier. It turned out to be an underground tunnel, which wasn’t surprising given all I’d discovered about the former elder of the lupine species. Moreover, I would be able to give t

More than once, my mates tried to pull me out of my own head, their delectable fragrances and compelling personalities enough to give me a fleeting reprieve from the recurring thoughts, but I was left with an abundance of free time while they ran around, tying up loose ends before we set off. Annie and Ruby joined us for breakfast, but no one was in a talkative mood with the daunting next couple of days ahead of us. Hence, it was a quiet affair before we said our goodbyes.
