Challenge

Carter's pov:

"I challenge you to a one-on-one fight until death. The winner gets the pack and the girl" Carter proposed.

As soon as those words left his mouth, David thundered with anger.

"You bastard" David sneered.

Carter smirked at him.

"Why oh why are you getting so riled up father? Are you scared?" Carter taunted David.

David twisted his lips with anger.

"Scared? of you? Have forgotten that you were beaten to almost your death when you challenged me the last time? Didn't you learn anything from it?" David reminded his son about the incident which happened eight years ago.

Carter is angry, but he simply smiled to goad his father.

"You mean when i challenged you and ruined your mating ceremony with a girl who is barely sixteen? Are we talking about the same girl who replaced my mother as the pack's new luna? Is she the same one who died just after a couple of months unable to bear your sexual assault? If so, then no. I still remember how bad i was beaten by you. I was just twelve then. But not anymore. Now i know what i am doing" Carter insulted his father in front of everyone, which made David's face turn red with anger.

"Alright, i agree to your challenge. Winner gets the pack and the girl. But unlike last time, i will not leave you alive this time" David snapped.

Carter merely smirked.

"The ceremony is postponed until after the dual" David announced loudly.

Everyone rushed out of the grand hall as if they were waiting for their Alpha's command.

Carter's gaze landed on his unwanted mate, who is looking at him with anger.

'Are you angry that i ruined your ceremony and plans to kill my father darling?' he asked her with his gaze.

'Don't you worry about it? If you failed to kill your father like last time, i will kill him for you. If you kill him and become the Alpha, then i will kill you ' she replied with a challenging gaze.

Carter smirked at her attitude. He turned away from his mate. He is satisfied that she is not at all interested in being his mate, just like he wanted it to be. He never wanted a mate, and he never thought he would have to meet her as the bride-to-be, of his father. He always thinks that mates make a wolf weak. Since the moment his mother died, David repeatedly insulted his mate and Luna by sleeping with countless willing and unwilling women. He even mated with a few of them and gave them the position of his Luna, the place which only rightfully belongs to his mother.

Carter was angry at his father for insulting his mother. When he found out that David is marrying another woman, he challenged his father for the first time when he was twelve. Then he was just a boy who is angry and not well trained. He is beaten to the brink of death. But luckily, his uncle Nathan, who is the younger brother of Carter's mother helped him. Since then, Carter began to reside in Nathan's house more than the packhouse.

He trained hard with only one goal in mind, which is to kill his father. He participated in so many pack wars as a warrior to gain experience. Slowly he began to build an army of his own. Every single member of his team is well trained and loyal to their core.

When Carter found out about this ceremony, he fumed with anger. He knows how to stop the ceremony and when to challenge his father. So he choose this moment and challenged William in front of everyone, who is forced to accept because everyone is watching. Carter knows his father lives for the power he has over others. So he will not let that control slip from his fingers by not accepting a direct challenge.

Carter never took into consideration that he would find his mate here. He doesn't want to do anything with her, but unintentionally he included her as a gift to the winning Alpha. Now that he is not Planning to let David live after this dual, his mate would belong to him.

But he doesn't want his mate.

He doesn't want her even though she is looking like a queen sitting on her throne.

He doesn't want her even though she looked just like him when she was holding her weapon and glaring at David with the promise of death.

He doesn't want her, even though she would have slept with David if the ceremony was not stopped.

Carter doesn't want anything to do with his mate, even though he can feel the attraction between them is sizzling hot.

He is stopped by one of his pack mates to talk about something important. By the time he is done, the entire hall is empty.

He went out of the hall to tell his uncle Nathan about his upcoming dual with his father. He passed by his pack members who are talking and laughing. He can guess what they are talking about. 

He wanted to take a right turn but unconsciously took a left turn. He turned in the direction where his senses caught his mate's scent. At a distance, he saw his mate walking away in the direction of the woods. Her gait is Unsteady and she stumbled a couple of times.

'What is wrong with her?' he wondered. 

He frowned when he noticed what he is doing.

'Why am i following behind her?' he thought with an irritated huff. No matter how unwilling he is, he couldn't leave with out finding out what is wrong with her. When he is close enough to talk to her, she stumbled again. When she was about to fall, he caught her. One wiff of breath and his eyes widened with shock.

'She is in heat ' he understood.
