TASHA

“I told you, you will go with me whether you like it or not,” Sadie said in hushed tones as we were looking through the racks of dresses to decide what to wear to the Junior Prom night the following night. She told my mom about the prom night and my mom urged that I should go. Even though I tried to persuade her that I didn't want to, she reminded me of how I had skipped both my junior prom and senior graduation ball while I was in secondary school.

“If mom would only let me, I would still choose not to attend,” I said. My eyes were drawn to a simple gray bare-backed dress with a low plunging neck area and I frowned upon seeing its tag price. “Even though this is their most affordable dress, it is still a drain on our savings!”

“Don’t look at the prices and pick what you really want,” Mom remarked from the opposite side of the rack. She strolled towards me, showing her guaranteeing smile.

“I can borrow a dress from Sadie, mom. I am sure she won’t mind,” I said. I eyed Sadie and she showed me twofold thumbs up. “See? She’s perfectly fine with it.”

“The last time you bought a piece of cloth for yourself was when you’re still in the first year of college. You’re in your third year now, Tasha. You've earned this,” Mom demanded. “Think of this as my reward to you since you’re working really hard to have excellent grades in your university."

“If you're still concerned about what kind of shoes you'll be wearing, don't be stressed about it. You may choose whatever you want, and I'll pay for it,” Sadie's side commented.

“Sadie—”

She grinned and shushed me. “I am sure, your father would love to see you in events like this,” she said. “And I do as well. Let’s not shroud that gorgeous face and flaunt that beauty of yours, girl!”

I chuckled because of how she uttered those words. My mom and I thanked her for her generous act and how she thought of my father.

Mom excused herself for a short period of time and she instructed us to finalize what we’re going to wear. Sadie and I consented to head out in a different direction to utilize our time choosing what we want to buy. Eventually, I settled on a red off-shoulder lace dress weaved with red roses on its neck and waistline, as well as a cream-shaded spool heel with variety of other sorts of naked hued blossoms on its throat.

I searched for Sadie and found her having a conversation with a saleslady. When I went in her direction, they’re almost done talking so I kept my distance. Soon after, she hurried over to me, her face aglow with a huge grin from ear to ear.

“Guess what,” she started, “we don’t have to pay for your clothes anymore.”

My jaw dropped as my eyes went wide in light of what she told me. “Why?”

“The store owner has instructed that saleslady to inform me that you are welcome to take whichever dresses and shoes that you want free of charge,” she explained. “Isn’t that fantastic?”

“N-No,” I responded. “Besides, we don't know who runs this store, and we can't just accept anything from a complete stranger whom we haven't even met yet. Aside from that, isn’t it dreadful that they wanted me to get what I want for free? For sure, there’s a consequence once I took that bait.”

She considered everything for some time and shrugged her shoulders a while later. “You're right. It is a little bit frightening.”

I sighed in relief when she agreed. We head out to the cashier section to pay for everything, except for when I was going to pay, the cashier I am in will not allow me to do it. They're all demanding that I can get the entirety of the things I've decided free of charge since it was the store owner’s instruction.

“If it's okay with you, could you tell me who owns this boutique?” I asked and they exchanged a sideway glances one after another. “Perhaps I am acquainted with her...or with him, because it seems a little unsettling that someone would hand me these things for free given the prices that they have.”

“It’s Ms. Raiah,” one of them replied. I tried everything I could to remember if that name rang a bell, but nothing came to mind—I couldn't come up with anything. I don't know her. “The other store owner's identity is not permitted to be publicized since he preferred to remain anonymous. I hope you don’t mind.”

I smiled and nodded my head as an indication of assuring her that it is fine with me. After all, they still have privacy protocols and I have to respect that. I thanked everyone and instructed them to extend my gratitude to the owners of this boutique.

Sadie is still flabbergasted because of what happened. She kept on telling me that this is the first time that this has ever happened in her life. Her inquisitiveness about the identity of the other store owner had prompted me to hunt for them on the internet, but I came up empty-handed. I assume they're really trying to keep his identity a secret from the general public.

When we saw mom, she appeared to be in a state of shock. I noticed that her body’s trembling a bit. “Mom,” I called. She faced me with her wide eyes and her now pale face. “What happened?”

“T-They’re h-here…” she said, her voice was thick with fear.

“Who?”

“The…The people who killed…your father…”

Dread washed over me, raising the fine hairs on the back of my neck because of what my mother just told me. This is the first time I’ve heard her disclose something to me about my father. He was…killed? By whom? For what?! My heart was pulsating in my ears, uproarious and irregular, but I scarcely heard it, for my mind was clouded with terror…and outrage.

“I’ll take you home with your mom, Tasha,” Sadie offered. “I think it would be safer in that way.”

I didn't say a single thing the entire time. During our drive home, we were all deafeningly quiet. I am looking at the outside of the car and mom’s looking on the other side. I don’t know what I should say. I'm not sure how I should be feeling. I covered my mouth to suppress my sobs as tears started to run down my cheeks.

I never had the chance to meet my father and now…he was killed?! For my mom to have that kind of fear, he must’ve been brutally killed by someone and that…hurts. I don’t understand. I don’t feel anything. It's as if my entire body has gone numb, and everything has started to shut down. This feels like I am looking out at the rest of the world through a fog. Why him? I need to know why my father was killed! I need an answer, or my soul will bear this for the rest of my life.

“I’ll see you tomorrow?” Sadie asked, almost whispering. I nodded and showed her a subtle smile before I thanked her for the ride. “If you and your mom need some help, I am here. Don't hesitate to send me a message, Tash.”

I waited for Sadie to drove away before I head out inside our house. I found mom sitting on one of our dining chairs with a glass full of cold water. I took a seat in the chair in front of her and closed my eyes to calm myself.

“Mom,” I called. “I know you don’t want me asking about my father’s death but…I need to know everything.” She looked at me. “I understand that this may be painful for you, but I don’t want to be left out in the shadows again. I need…the truth.”

“Forbidden love…killed your father,” she uttered, her eyes fixed on me as she spoke those words.

“W-What?”

When she began uncovering the untold truth which she saved for how many years, I simply gaze with wide open-eyed cannot shut, like the whole world is splitting crumble apart around me… I didn't shake. I was…only there…in complete loss of motion, tears rolling down my cheeks, without realizing what will befall my life after that.

You’re spacing out,” she said. “Are you okay?” I shook my head, gesturing no. “I’m sorry about your father. I am strolling as fast as I can, Sadie. Besides, why are you in such a hurry? Did I miss something important?” “Come here in the bleacher real quick, and you’ll see,” she said as she hung up the phone, concluding the conversation. It was only after taking a deep breath that I decided to start jogging towards the school's bleachers. When I arrived at the bleacher, tons of people were wheezing and murmuring about something. I couldn’t gander as to what the commotion was all about, so I decided to send a message to Sadie and ask for her exact location. After a few minutes, she promptly showed herself and m

TASHA I let out a sigh once again. “You’ve been sighing for a lot of times already. Is there something wrong?” Mom asked me while she was caught up preparing our supper for today. I shook my head to gesture no. “Nothing, mom. I was just weary,” I lied. I know that she’s too worn out because of her jobs, and the slightest thing that I can do is to not add to her burden. “You can always talk to me when something’s bothering you, Tasha,” she said, brimming with assurance in her voice. When I got close enough, I wrapped my arms around her from behind. “Thanks, mom.” “For what?” “For going above and beyond in everything just to

It’s as if hearts are zooming around the two of us. “I kept thinking if how did he find out that you didn’t do your project assessment.” I pucker my lips, pondering about the same thing. I only mentioned it when I was with Sadie, and I was shocked when he came up with a plan assessment for me and himself. As far as I am concerned, he doesn’t have the ability to read my mind. “Maybe he noticed that you were too preoccupied for the past few days, and out of generosity, he made an extra plan assessment just in case you’ll forget to do yours. You know what, that's something only soulmates do,” she expressed. “What a sweet, hot devil,” she went on to add.

TASHA It is Saturday today. We don't have class, but I have to go to Sadie's place because she has made it clear that she will lend me a dress for tonight. This evening, the party where Rendall's enticing me to attend will happen. I agreed to come with him to the dinner party, not only because of my debt of gratitude for what he did, but I am also hoping against hope that he'll stay away from me after this. I quit fixing my things when I heard three loud thumps on my door. Mom was smiling as brightly as ever and had her arms crossed in front of her. I couldn't help myself but smile in return. She headed inside my room and took up a position right next to me. "I can see that you're quite busy with preparations for the event tonight," she remarked. "This Rendall...is he a good guy?"

He seemed as though he was flaunting their mansion to their new visitor—which is me—but I could also not blame him. He's carrying on with a comfortable life, as I should say. I gander at the mansion that stood in front of me. It screams Venetian style in light of its accentuation on patterns and surfaces with deep, rich tones. Not to mention how it is well-lit starting from the main gate up to the vast open spaces around the mansion itself. It serves as proof that the owner—or

"When my hand met her hand, I felt something different. It was an inclination that I only get in individuals like us, Rendall, and I know that you felt it, as well. Now I won't be perplexed as to why you wanted to be so close to her all the time." Indeed, even before the party started, I had a feeling that this moment would come—a moment when Raiah would come up to me and ask me questions about Tasha. All things considered, I couldn't conceal anything from her because we were alike. Just like me, she can sense whether a person is a pure-blooded human or not by simply touching a bit of its skin and by the smell that they emit.

SAGE I found Phoenix on our grandfather’s library just like the usual. He’s my cousin who’s five years ahead of my age. He loved this place more than anywhere else inside the packhouse, and I am not sure why. When I used to ask him about it, he would give me an answer once he finished reading a book, and I got tired of waiting for him to converse with me. I’m an outgoing person while he’s the reserved one. That is why when my mother used to tell me stories about Phoenix’s childhood, I couldn’t believe her. They were telling me that this man used to be jolly when he was a kid, but I doubt that. I don’t even understand why a lot of girls in our pack liked him. “They were looking for you,” I said before sitting on the swivel chair in front of him. He didn’t even bother to move an inch, say anything, or even throw a quick glance on my direction. “Phoenix, we’re about to have a visitor and you’re here, isolating yourself, trying to read the same book over and over again. I would surely t

TASHA One year later… Everyone’s busy inside the pack because today is a very special day for me, Rendall, and for Sage, our daughter. Two months ago, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl, and Rendall and I decided to name her “Sage”, a name that signifies being wise and being healthy. Today, the new members of the council will baptize her. It would be a big celebration since Rendall invited his allies from outside the Kumori woods. “Tasha!” Raiah squealed after seeing me. Griego and Phoenix followed her. She gave me a warm hug before handing her gift for Sage. “Phoenix chose it himself for his cousin. Since this morning, he’s eager to meet her again. I’m glad that Phoenix isn’t the only child in the family.” I looked past at her and when my eyes met those of Phoenix, he held on to Griego’s hand. “Thank you for your gift, Phoenix. I am sure that Sage will love it,” I said. He hid behind his father’s back, and we shared a peal of laughter because of him. After a while, he looked at m

TASHA Rendall was quiet the whole time ever since Raiah, Griego, and Phoenix left. He didn’t say another word when we got back inside the main packhouse, which made me doubt if this will be the perfect time to break out the news to him or should I wait again for another day. “Did Ava talk to you?” he asked while he’s busy preparing something on the kitchen counter. I nodded my head in response even though he couldn’t see it before sitting at the edge of the dining table. “She told me that she’s leaving the pack,” I said. “I couldn’t imagine the amount of pain she had been feeling after her father passed away. She had to live her life without her mother, her brother has his own life with Raiah—she basically lost everyone.” He handed me a plate of salad as he snaked his arms around my waist. I wrapped mine on his neck in return. I looked him straight on his eyes and he became vulnerable in that exact moment. When I had to deal with the problem on my chest, Rendall did his very best

RENDALL The war is over, but the remnants of its memories would never leave our mind. They used to say that the truth will set you free, but in our case, the truth made us lost a huge part of ourselves—including those people who are important for us. I placed the flowers I brought beside the tombs of three important persons in my life. I’m still not used in not seeing the three of them around the packhouse—I guess, I could never get used to it. “Hey,” a voice from behind me said. I turned around to see who it was, and I was astounded when I saw Ava holding two baskets of flower which she placed right beside mine. After the war has ended, I can say that between all of us, Ava was the one who changed a lot. She isolated herself—and didn’t talk to any of us. It seemed as though that the war has become a traumatic event for her, and I couldn’t blame her for that. She grew up with a memory of losing a loved one, now she had to endure the same predicament all over again. “I didn’t expec

You let those hearsays about me clouded your judgment! You were afraid to stand against the council no matter how hard I try to assure you that I will fight for you!” “Because they imposed a threat on my life, Sandalio! You were too busy with your responsibilities and obligations that you didn’t have the time to notice that I was carrying a huge weight on my shoulders! You were too busy that you didn’t notice that they’re doing everything in their power to make me drift away from you!” she exclaimed. “When I finally got the courage to tell you about every

TASHA I was left in complete shock after hearing the words uttered by Rhio. Before I could say anything about it, I was pushed to the ground when Rendall dashed to attack Rhio. Both of their faces darkened as they exchanged punches after punches. They shifted in their wolf form and I was left with no choice but to help myself stood back on my feet because I couldn't do anything to help Rendall. Somebody grabbed me by my arm and dragged me away from that spot. When that person removed the piece of clothing that was covering her face, I took two-folds step away from her. Her presence took me by suprise. "M-Mom?" She greeted me with my smile but my lips remained pursed as my brows furrowed thinking as to why she was here. Then a flash of memory filled my head. "I told the council the truth about what Raiah did, how her action caused Emily's life and your own torment. They wanted me to carry on with the proper punishment for her but..." "But?" "Raiah descended from the Alpha's bloodline, she's still my sister and the daughter of the previous Alpha of our pack, which means that I had to punish her myself because that is how the hierarchy dictates it," he added, almost whispering. "Is that why you came here? To tell me that you can't punish your sister?" I blurted out with bitterness evident in my voice. He shook his head. She used her status in the pack get what she wanted, and because of that, someone ended up losing her life. The more I think about what Emily had gone through after she realized that her actions led to the death of the warriors of the pack, it will only fuel the rage building up inside me. I couldn't even feel the pain that's killing me because witnessing the death of an innocent person is much more painful than that. "Tasha!" Rendall called me when I walked away from him but I didn't bother to look back. All I know is I had to confront his sister about why she put Emily's life in great danger. I want her to pay for what she did. I barged into her room but she was not there. I walked my way to the room of Rendall's grandfather but Rendall stopped me when I was about to open the door. The guards also blocked my way. "Let me go!" I exclaimed. "I need to talk to your sister, Rendall!
