Chapter 1
A not-so-simple task Lilian. I wasn't always like this. This bony and frail looking girl with hollow eyes. These eyes were vibrant once before, even my dark hair was shiny once before, now it looked scattered and dry like an overused mop. I sighed to myself as I gave up looking at my miserable frame in the mirror. This was my life now, I had made peace with it. There was no big bad Alpha that would swoop in to save me and destroy the lives of the people that were destroying mine everyday. “Are you done gawking at your ugly self, Lorraine?” The Luna's disgusted and mocking tone filled my ears. I looked up and saw the disdain her eyes had as they stared down at my bony figure. “I'm sorry, Luna. I just wanted to tell you that I was done cleaning Cailan’s room.” I bowed my head while I spoke. “Oh.” She stopped short at the stairs, looking all put together in the gold-coloured satin simple gown that hugged her delicate figure. “Find something else and do. It's not like there isn't any other thing in this house to keep you busy. Don't be a lazy fool and go find some work to do!” She commanded with acid dripping from her tone, and thundered down the stairs. I nodded slowly. I sure looked really tired and weary, and my tummy grumbled due to lack of food. I hadn't eaten since the previous night as a punishment for not washing the Beta’s clothes. My knees could give way at any moment and I could slump at any time, but I walked on. “Lillian, there you are.” I heard a haughty voice behind me. Beta Aidan. “Yes, Beta.” I bowed my head to show submission, if not, I would be used and abused and nobody would care. “Go to the lobby and scrub the floor, it needs to be sparkling and shining before I return. You can take Hailey with you.” He said. I bowed my head once again and rushed the best I could to pick up the supplies and go to my stationed workplace. Hailey came with me, and together on our hands and knees, we scrubbed quietly. “Seal all the pack borders! We are under attack!” My Alpha's deep voice resonated throughout the pack link, and I could feel all the hair in my body stand. For the first time in a while, I was struck with fear of the unknown. I was doing all these lowly work because of only one goal in mind, and a pack attack would ruin it all. There was a hint of panic in the Alpha's voice, something that had never happened before. “Something is really wrong, I have a terrible feeling about this.” My friend, Hailey, said with eyes filled with fear. If Hailey said something was wrong, something was really wrong. She was really perceptive. “Alpha!” A sharp voice cut through my wandering thoughts as a bloodied pack warrior stumbled in and fell at the door. “Half of our warriors are down.” He tried to muster out, coughing up a lot of blood in the process. Whatever happened out there had really weakened the spirits of the Commander of the Pack Warriors. Alpha Blackthorn stood up from where he sat, not quite far from the floor we were scrubbing, his eyes were blazing emerald green in anger. “Who dares attack my pack? How many are they in number? How many are the rogues out there that you can't defeat?” His voice thundered at the warrior. Tears spilled out of the corner of the warrior’s eyes. Bitter tears, I noted. I felt my heart drop to my stomach, dreading the next words that would come out from his mouth. “There are no rogues,” his voice cracked. “It is just one wolf. One demon! One monster!” He shivered in fear as more tears spilled out of his eyes. “Lilian!” I heard my Alpha's dark and grainy voice call out to me and my legs began to move on its own as it scurried forward towards where the Alpha stood. I knelt, head buried to the ground, to listen to his orders as I always did, if not, his heavy legs would come crashing down my back. “Since all my warriors are busy, I will task you with one important mission. I even promise to let your family go and all their debts forgiven.” He said coldly, and I knew my life was going to be on the line for this request. But thinking of my parents, my brothers and sisters coming back home to me, I knew I would do everything in my power to make it happen, no matter how weary or hungry I was. This was my only chance to redeem my family, and I wasn't going to let this slip away. “Y-y-yes Alpha. I will do anything.” I struggled to breathe out. “I want you to protect my only son and child, Cailan, with all your life. If anything as little as a strand of hair misses from his head, I would slaughter your family before your very eyes and burn them till they turn to ashes,” his voice was really low and malevolent as he spoke. I was internally gasping for breath at that gory mental picture. I swore on my life that it would never get to that, and I would protect Cailan even if it meant dying. “I promise that Cailan will be safe after this is all over. I swear on it with my life.” I was trembling as those words came out of my mouth. I could feel the tears begin to well up in my eyes. I could do this! I had to be able to do this! Only then would I be able to see their faces once more. “Good.” The Alpha breathed out before disappearing in a second. Immediately he was gone, I scampered to my feet and rushed to the corner of the room where Cailan napped peacefully. We had to hide! Careful not to wake him, I scooped him into my arms and shouted towards Hailey, “The big oak! We need to hide there.” I cuddled the boy in my arms and fled out of the lobby, skipping over the fallen warrior in his pool of blood. “Not that way!” I heard the warrior shout with his last breath as soon as I dashed towards the direction of the big oak, and dread filled my stomach once again. It was already too late to turn back…Chapter 2 Mate. Lilian. There was a sickening shatter of bones beside me and a shrill scream pierced the evening sky. I turned in horror, and that was when I saw him. The midnight black wolf which crushed every bone he stepped on. I stood in shock, watching how the remaining pack warriors struggled to fight the beast, but nothing could penetrate its hide, instead, their bones shattered anytime they made bodily contact with it. But something was even more wrong… I found myself rooted to the spot, entranced by the magnificent beast in front of me. I was all but afraid as I stared at it. And as if he could feel himself being watched, he slowly turned around and his stormy grey eyes met my dull blue ones, and everything went silent in my head. I was feeling new things… things I hadn't felt in a really long while. I could feel my heart pounding against my ribcage, and it wasn't out of fear this time, instead my body hummed and thrummed with excitement. “Lilian!” I heard a scream s
Chapter 3The Predator.Lilian.The pack hospital was brimming with hundreds of injured, healing and dead pack warriors and their family swarming over them. The room was rowdy and filled with cries of agony for the dead and injured. It was the most painful and heart wrenching thing to watch.“Lilian! You're alive!” Hailey said from afar, her eyes shone with tears as she rushed to gather me in her arms.I winced and whimpered in pain as I felt some splinters digging deeper into my skin. Hailey noticed as well and her eyes started brimming with tears.“Oh, Lilian! The doctors haven't looked at your wounds at all? For the goddess’ sake, you put your life on the line for the heir of the pack!”I gave her a grim smile while I tried pulling out the remaining splinters from my body, wincing as the blood gushed out.“You could get an infection, Lilian!” Hailey's voice cracked this time.“It's not an issue, Hailey. My body will heal on its own, okay?”Hailey looked at me with disbelief in her
Chapter 4 The Intruder Lilian. “Lilian Hawthorn!” A hard voice called out from the back and the crowd parted to see who called my name. Five elder council members stood at the door, and it was only then I realised the severity of my case. The elder who spoke had a grim expression on his face as he took cautious steps towards us. “Are you a friend or foe to the pack?” The question had me rooted to the spot as I paused to reflect that question. Of course, I am a friend to the pack as long as my family is still kept captive by the Alpha. No matter how badly treated I was, I didn't want any harm coming to the pack if I could help it. The crowd parted the more as the five council elders strode forward and stopped a few centimetres from me. “Again, Lilian, are you a friend or foe to the pack?” His eyes were kinda as he spoke to me. “A friend…” I quickly rushed out. “And how long have you known that you were mated to that thing?” A coil of thick fury rose somewhere deep
Chapter 5 The Truth Lilian. I was surrounded by fifteen bulky warriors of the Alpha King as I was being led towards the pack hall. The warriors were on high alert as they constantly looked around for any form of threat–my mate. I could barely think clearly because everything was happening so fast. First, the pack attack, then my mate being at the center of it all, and finally being asked to choose between my family's freedom and my mate. Everything was just too much to handle and I felt like my mind would explode at any time. The Alpha King stomped angrily in front of me, occasionally turning to give me a deep look of contempt. "It is greatly unfortunate that you are mated to a demon! And I promise that if you don't choose right, I would make your life miserable as he made mine!" The Alpha King spat out ruthlessly, his bloodshot eyes darting to give me a sinister look. "Your decision timeline has been revoked since you're already consorting with the devil! You will make a
Chapter 6Her Decision.Lilian.Right there in the warm arms of my mate, I felt my blood run cold when that statement was made."D-dead?"I asked, my voice shaky with disbelief. My family was already dead? A sudden cold draft spread across the room, and I knew it was my mate's doing. It affected me too, but I didn't care much. My body was numbed by the sudden revelation."Deservedly so," The Alpha King spat out menacingly in fury. "Do you understand what it means to lose a pure bloodline of Alphas in a pack? The continuous bloodline helped to keep this pack in place and her miserable parents took their lives!""Took their lives?" I heard a deep scoff from my mate. "Is the bloodline of the former Alpha so weak that he can be killed by lowborn werewolves?" He taunted. The Alpha King growled in anger, while having the sense to keep his distance from my mate as his eyes were blazing. "How dare you?!""The previous Alpha of this pack was already a weak one if he could be killed by the lowes
Chapter 7RevengeLilian.There was a pin drop silence in the pack hall as people looked at me in shock.I know they expected me to choose my mate and watch them suffer because they made me suffer as well, but I had another agenda in mind.I saw as my mate gave me a look that broke my heart to pieces as I chose the pack over him."Daemon, I..." I was at a loss for words, I didn't know what I could say to him."Take care of yourself." He whispered softly to me as he turned away. The pain in my chest did not subside as I watched his back to me when he took long strides out of the pack hall. His movements were stiff, and his back was tense. And somehow, I knew he was holding himself back from letting any form of emotion show as it would hurt people around."You made a good choice, Lilian." The Alpha King said to me in his crouched position. "He will not hurt you or anyone in this pack as long as you have rejected him."A disdainful scoff escaped my mouth as I looked down on the Alpha Kin
Chapter 8.Enemies.Lilian.Numb.That was all I was feeling at this moment. As the Alpha King advanced towards us with the silver chains in hand, all I could do was slump my shoulders in surrender."You will kill a pack member just to hurt the Predator?" Hailey asked the Alpha King shakily."I've done it once before already," He said as his eyes fixated on mine. Was he referring to my family?"Is it true?" I had to ask. "Is it true that my family never really killed the Alpha and his wife?"An evil smirk formed on his face as he twirled the silver chains before giving me an answer. "How can your weak family take on an Alpha and his family? We just needed a scapegoat and they were at the right place at the right time.""But...why?" My voice broke as I listened to him. "What of my siblings? They were also innocent. My family was innocent!""Or that's just what you think..." He said and nodded to the men who surrounded us.As they closed in on us, a shrill scream could be heard piercin
Chapter 9.Conflicted.Lilian."You're what?" The disbelief was evident in my voice as I stared at her."Daemon's girlfriend and soon to be fiancée." She repeated herself. "I'm here to advise you to actually reject him. If he rejects you, you will not survive it. Seeing your..." She eyed my little figure up and down. "Less than a scrawny appearance."I opened my mouth to retort, but nothing came out and I shut up."You better not say anything, Lilly." She sneered as she mocked me with the nickname. "I wonder why he even bothers to protect you when you're almost dead." She spat out bitterly."Now, that's enough." Wilder said as he turned away from Oliver. "We have orders to follow." He carefully picked me up from the floor and held me in his arms."Wait!" I suddenly exclaimed. "What about my friend? What about Hailey?" I looked towards Hailey who was still passed out cold on the ground.Wilder glanced at Hailey's figure. "She will be fine, Lilian. The entire packs in the world are not
Chapter 72Changing Her Mind.“You've been moving up and down since the beginning of today.” Daemon spat out in an irritated tone as he glanced slightly towards Oliver. “Can't you do this somewhere where I don't have to see you?”Daemon was leaning against the stone wall of the pack house in deep thought, waiting for Wilder's message when he periodically got distracted by Oliver's movements.“All thanks to your mate!” Oliver pursed her lips when she replied, turning away from him to leave. At the mention of Lilian's name, Daemon's head snapped up in concentration.“What about her? Is she okay?” He began to pull himself away from the wall, his voice filled with worry.Oliver felt the hollow pain in her chest as she watched Daemon's concern for Lilian. When was he going to see her the way she saw him? Was he ever going to look her way even for a second? She bit her lips, trying to force away the tears that came with the pain in her heart.“Nothing.” She shook her head, before realizing
Chapter 71.An Opportunity.Oliver was carefully tapping her perfectly manicured nails on the table, in deep thought about Lilian's proposition.“Friends?” She scoffed at herself and rolled her eyes. “Sure, when hell freezes over!”Suddenly, the door opened, and a mysteriously cloaked man walked into the room. Oliver casually glanced at him before going back to her thoughts. She had been expecting him for over an hour, and she had given up on waiting for him.“I'm sorry for the delay.” The man said in a gruff voice and slipped on quietly into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click. “I had to weave through many guards before I could come up.”“Just stop with the lies.” Oliver looked uninterested. “There are barely any guards or warriors around this time of the night.”The man began peeling off the coat from his body, hanging it on the nearest chair he could find.“Maybe things have suddenly changed, or,” He shrugged, “You're not as observant as you think you are.”“And
Chapter 70.A Party. The pack hall was dimly lit when she entered, the once rowdy hall quietened as soon as she took her first steps. It was as if they could sense her as all heads turned towards her direction.Lilian let out a shaky breath as she made her way into the pack hall, making sure her gaze on people was steady, showing no form of fear or coldness. It was difficult to keep up with the neutral position of her face as some people either stared daggers at her or cowered when her eyes landed on them. This wasn't going to be easy, she thought to herself. She was finally able to make her way to the podium, and she suddenly remembered the last time she stood on the wooden platform. Her fate was being decided by the elders of the pack, and it was then she learned about the death of her parents– her aunt's family, rather– who had died in the hands of Alpha Blackthorn.“Hello, everyone.” Lilian cleared her throat and spoke, softly and calmly, yet clear enough for everyone to hear. All
Chapter 69A New Proposition.“What do you think of her plan?” Wilder asked with a straight face, his hands in his pocket as he strode in step with Daemon. “Will it work out?”Daemon did not reply for a few seconds as he checked his watch, and when he replied, he completely ignored Wilder's question.“Has anyone other Alpha reached out to you?”Wilder sighed at his response and shook his head. “Only three Alphas have shown interest so far.”“Apart from Alpha Callow, who else?”“I know that Alpha Nolan and Alpha Ryker are planning to join hands with Lilian. Alpha Nowel will undoubtedly be on our side even though he hasn't revealed the patron for this pack yet.”“And the other four Alphas?”“I guess they are still contemplating their answers.”They reached the large garage beside the pack house and it was filled with different kinds of expensive cars– mostly acquired by the late Alpha Blackthorn and was now given to Daemon to be used at his disposal. They walked confidently into the gar
Chapter 68Can We Be Friends?“What do you think you're doing?”Lilian sat casually on the black sofa of the living room when Daemon burst into the room angrily with Oliver and Wilder following behind.“Helping you.” Lilian replied without looking his way, a small book sat on her lap as her eyes ran through the page she was reading.“How is what you're doing being helpful?” Oliver burst in, her face twisted in anger and her hands shaking. “You offered them so much…"“Well…" Lilian cut her off sharply, closing the book with a soft thud before giving Oliver a cold look. “Isn't it better that they think we are divided?”Wilder gave the woman on the sofa a calculating look. Something had changed in her, and he didn't know when the change started. She was calmer this time, and there was also an edge to her. Lilian had an aloof expression on her face as she spoke to Oliver.“Why should they think we are divided? They wouldn't trust us, or want to join forces with us.”“I'm not speaking of t
Chapter 67One Person.Night was beginning to fall, and she sat in a lonely corner of the bar watching every person who entered.“Losers.” She muttered to herself, the word leaving a sour taste in her mouth.“Do you need another glass, ma'am?” A tall and fair waitress sauntered to her side for the sixth time that evening to ask the same question even when her response was going to be the same.“No!” She replied, barely sparing the waitress a glance. She tapped her foot impatiently on the floor. What was keeping them so long? She had been seated here for over an hour, and they were yet to show up.“Ma'am…" The waitress called her again. “You can't stay here if you can't at least order a drink, it's bad for our business.”She dug her hand into the purse she held and drew out a wad of cash from it. “Will this do?”The waitress' eyes widened at seeing that amount of money at once. The woman turned her head towards the waitress this time, her perfectly carved eyebrows raised.“That should
Chapter 66First And Second Option. It was late into the night when the meeting was held. Outside was cold with the rain pattering on the roof, but inside a stark contrast to that. The room was big enough to contain all the Alphas, Daemon, Oliver and Wilder.Daemon sat at the head of the table, asserting his dominance over everyone. Yes, they were all Alphas, but no one on that table was anything close to being as strong as he was.“Can we begin?” His voice was deep and dark as he shifted slightly in his seat, sitting forward with a straight back, and an aura of a king flowed round him.The room was lit with little lamps which highlighted their faces and their shadows were cast on to the stone wall. The room smelled like burning wood–the burning fireplace that kept the room warm. In the middle of the room sat a uniquely carved table where all men, and one woman, sat around.“What is your purpose for this meeting?” One of the Alphas asked coldly, openly showing his aggression towards t
Chapter 65A Patron.Lilian.A knock sounded on the door pulling us out of the current conversation.“Come in.” Daemon responded to the knock, and we all turned towards that black oak door, waiting as it was slowly pushed open.“They are here…" Gamma Nowel, or should I say 'Alpha Nowel' walked into the room, pausing to take in the fading tension in the room.“Who?” Oliver rose from her chair in a fluid motion, her shiny hair falling in waves onto her slim back and waist. Her facial expression had turned neutral as she stared at him.Gamma Nowel, just like everyone else in the pack, was awestruck by her undeniable beauty and smooth voice. So, he turned to her and gave her the nicest smile he had to offer.“The Alphas have gathered. They are in the pack, and they would like to have a meeting tomorrow evening.”“Wasn't the meeting supposed to be held in a week's time?” Oliver questioned, and my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What meeting? What Alphas?“What's going on?” I inserted mysel
Chapter 64Not Possible.Lilian.“What about my father?” My voice was low when I asked, and their expressions changed instantly.“Look…" Clara said, “Our mother has already said she doesn't know how you are. Please — stop butting into our family. You are causing a lot of inconvenience here.”The rest of them were intrigued with me. My eyes glazed over her and fell on my mother who did not meet my eyes. Her head was hung low, and her shiny black hair was tied into a tight bun. There was something weird about her expression, like she knew who I was but was denying me for some unknown reason.“Then…" I cut my eyes away from her and looked at everyone. “What about grandmother? Mom brought me here when I was five years old.”They were about to make an excuse when a heavy thud was heard from inside, and Eli looked like he just died and resurrected instantly.“She has woken up!” He cursed under his breath and stamped his foot, not hiding his glare from me.I waited, heart pounding slightly,
