LOGINBRAX POVThere was nothing in this world I would let survive harming her the way her father had.I gripped his throat tightly, his face blushing, turning red as he tried to escape. He yanked his sword out and went to pierce my body, but I thwacked it away faster than the next harsh breath that barely made it past his discolored lips. The skies swirled with angry clouds, rain coming heavier as my shadows kept a wall around us, stopping anyone from saving his worthless life.Until Valarian said the one word that made everything change.“Fractum!” he sputtered, struggling against my grip as my claws dug into his neck, enough to have blood dripping down his neck. But that single word made me freeze. I sucked in a breath and stepped back, my hand dropping as he fell to his knees, drawing in huge raspy breaths before glaring up at me.“What the fuck did you just say?” I demanded, hoping I had heard wrong. If he had said what I thought he did, then we were all fucked. Humans.Werewolves. Vam
BRAX POVI surrounded myself in shadow, flipping chairs out of my way as I moved down the stairs into the underground tunnels that had hidden my Spitfire from me.Wolfsbane. Gardenia. Two herbs that were not so great for a werewolf.Wolfsbane was a toxin, one that would poison us, one that humans shouldn’t have access to, but it was the gardenia that stressed me out. With that stuff, they could take away our senses. It hid the scents we needed to seek them out, and I guessed there was a lot of it to conceal our linked female and all the humans they were hiding. We had sensed a few extras, but nothing like what the tunnels suggested. The pack moved quickly in their wolf forms, sniffing and searching through the tunnel, taking in everything and feeding it to the rest of the pack through the pack link.I moved more slowly, committing everything to memory, my shadows feeling over the walls, the intent, the humans’ souls. It was all bad news. There was so much anger, resentment, and hatred
Marabella POV I was shaken awake from another moment of weakness by the gentle rousing of the nice guard who had been feeding me.Vaughn smiled down at me as I sat up, groggy with nausea and weakness that I had to fight to get my connection back with my wolves. But I couldn’t feel it. I was too spent, the connection too far away, and yet they felt closer, closer than they had been.“Vaughn?” I asked, and he helped me to my feet.“C’mon. We have to go,” he said, and I frowned, planting my feet so he couldn’t move me, eyeing the open door to my cell warily.I had no idea if this was a trap or not, and I was too tired to walk into any more of those.“Why? Where are we going?” I demanded, pulling my arm back.He looked over his shoulder at the open tunnel, then back at me with wide eyes.“Because your wolves are here, and I’m pretty sure they’re about to go on a killing spree to find you, so I’m taking you to them instead,” he said, and my heart leapt into my throat. My wolves were here?
Jordan POVI hated that we relied on the humans for so much magic. Their souls fed our magic; it took nothing from them, but we felt it.And we needed it. Otherwise, we were just werewolves, capable of nothing but savagery. The magic kept us somewhat human.I couldn’t risk that being taken away from my pack. The descent into madness was swift, and it would be too late by the time we figured out how to stop it.Jayden stepped back; his lips pursed as he sniffed the air again.“He’s here. His arrogance is permeating everything,” Jayden muttered, rolling his shoulders back.I frowned. He shouldn’t be arrogant. I would expect some anxiety or something edging toward fear, but if he was arrogant then it meant he thought he had more than just a chance at beating us.I sniffed the air harder, frowning when a foul scent stung my nose. I coughed and spluttered out the taste, spinning to the others.“Wolfsbane. They’re growing it,” I bit, anger coiling through me.That was an act of war. I sniff
Jordan POV I had to stay focused, lead the pack, be the alpha. All I wanted to do was link to Marabella like Jayden was and make sure we were going to make it in time. Not being able to link at the same time as him was driving me insane, making me feel out of control, and that was the last thing I wanted to be.But I had my role. We all did. And we had to work together.Jayden had the strongest mental connection with her, which she needed so she could hold it for longer. Brax could use his shadows to strengthen her and help keep our child alive. My role was the pack. I had to be the one with the level head, the one who knew where to send the others, the one who could keep everyone in line. They listened to me and I was glad they did, but I couldn’t help wondering if I was getting the short end of the deal. They got to feel her, be with her in some way, and it was hard not to take that luxury for myself. But I would handle it because I had to. It wasn’t safe for her, and by doing what
Marabella POV The man bent down in front of me, his eyes a startling blue that stood out against his dark skin.“Marabella?” he asked, and I nodded warily. He handed me his satchel of water from his belt. I looked up at him with wide eyes before snatching it off him and downing half of it in one go.He smiled a friendly smile, one that made me hand the satchel back with a sheepish look.“Thank you. Sorry, I drank a lot of it,” I murmured, and wiped my mouth, soaking up the hydration. I still didn’t know whether to trust him.“I’m Vaughn,” he said, and I nodded once.He looked over his shoulder at the closed cell door, then grabbed a muesli bar from his pocket. He handed it over.I looked at it nervously. Things were rarely free. I’d give a lot for the water I had just consumed, but I wasn’t sure I was willing to pay the food price.“Why are you helping me?” I asked, not taking the bar.“Because I’m not an idiot. I know who you are to the alphas, which means they will find you, and th
