Claire's POV

I was still unsure how it happened but somehow I got a room of my own, right opposite his, much to my displeasure. I couldn't help but stare off at the blank wall. I had a hard night, my wolf kept clawing for her mate, trying to take control to get to him. I couldn't help but wonder if he had a tough night too.

A knock on my door pulled me away from the impending headache.

"Who is it?"

No response came. I paused, wondering if I misheard but I didn't as it came again, much louder this time.

"Why won't you say something? Hold on!" I pulled back the door to find an unfamiliar face. It was a woman. An elderly one with a poker face.

"The alpha has sent for you. He needs you in the infirmary," she said in a monotone.

"Why? Is he sick?" My heart ached a little at the very thought. It was true that I hated him but I never wanted him sick even though he caused me a lot of pain and scared the hell out of me.

She scoffed like I said something crazy. "The alpha never gets sick and if he did you'd never hear of it."

"You sound awfully close. Are you his mother?" I tried to keep up with her long strides.

She paused immediately, turning to me and causing me to take several steps back. "Please refrain from asking stupid questions in front of him."

"I'm sorry. I guess I assumed a little bit but your tone is a little harsh. You seem to care about him and you've got the same eyes and nose….."

I trailed off she gave me a quick glare.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry, I just want to make conversation. It's a little lonely here, being away from my pack." I spoke honestly, feeling a little vulnerable in front of a total stranger.

"We don't need to get to know each other. Just do what you came here for and get out." She spoke with precision. I was starting to get the feeling that she didn't like me.

If I was to guess what she meant then I was right. "Darien would never let anyone know the real reason why I'm here and since you do I'm guessing I'm right. You are indeed close to him." I gave a bright smile at the realization.

She rolled her eyes. Something they both had in common. "We are here. He's waiting for you. " She held out the door leading into the dark infirmary. I looked in, taking short strides when I came across a familiar face.

As much as I hated it, my heart leaped for joy at seeing his high cheekbones lined with a chiseled jaw and those eyes that mocked and flirted with me.

"I thought you stood me up." He held out a hand for me to take. "This is the pack doctor, she'll be checking our fertility and let us know when's best to mate."

He looked between me and the doctor when neither of us said a word. It was awkward and I was reminded yet again of the reasons why I was here.

"We should get started, I'm going to need you to lie down." She beckoned me to lie on the unoccupied bed.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked as he walked me back to the pack house and to my room as we couldn't get the results until a few days.

He spared me a side glance. "What do you mean?"

"I mean this. Why go through all this just for a pup? You are making more foes which will only endanger the pup's life."

While tossing and turning last night I had a few thoughts to myself and the pup came up a few times.

He gave a light chuckle. "I don't think that's all you have to say." He paused as he turned to me, placing me under his quizzing gaze. "Come on, let it all out. What's really on your mind."

I let out a loud breath. "Fine, how confident are you that you can control your wolf when we mate? Can you really hold back? I see your eyes flicker now and then. He tries to break free even at the slightest touch." I took a step forward, my fingers lightly grasping over his skin causing him to take a deep breath.

His eyes, fell closed. On seeing them again they were much darker, like the sea. His wolf had broken free. He took long strides and closed the distance between us, taking my full lips in his.

He took me by surprise and I wasn't sure how to react. His lips tasted magical, moving with expertise and promise over mine. It was only a matter of seconds before I melted into him, responding to his kisses with a fire that coursed through my veins.

He successfully pinned me against the wall, his hands crawling up my skirt and getting a feel of my inner thigh. I gasp at the spark that went up my cunt and he wasn't even touching me there yet.

I was swooning over a man who didn't want me, he just needed a babymaker. That was the reality check I needed and I pushed him as hard as I could. He let his guard down was it easy as he took a step back.

He closed his beautiful blue orbs with a deep breath as I gawked at him, trying to catch my breath and he was back.

"I might not be able to control him every time but I will not have a mate, that I can promise you."

Claire's POV They said it was normal to get pre-wedding jitters just before the wedding. You start to doubt everything and question everyone. Was this really the dress for me? Did I look fat in it? Are those the right flowers for me? And…. Was he the right one for me? I'm one of the few who didn't go through all that. It was happening, I was getting married! Mother patted down on my arm as we walked down the aisle, trying to ease my nerves but it did her more good than it did me. She took a deep breath, controlling her breathing. She looked stunning in her ash, plunging neck-sleeve sequin dress. With a small smile her way, I stood in front of him. I had the widest grin on as I looked over at my father wiping off a stray tear with his handkerchief. I was used to it, I'd seen a lot of stray tears and worn-out kerchiefs as he had always been proud of me. It would ruin everything I set out to do."You really thought you could run away from our bond? From me?" He eyed Jayden who remained speechless. I seemed to be the only one calm enough to be articulate."I wasn't running from you." I held my head up high as I told the obvious lie. "I didn't even know you existed."He let out another chuckle. He seemed to love doing that, to rile people up, get under their skin, and probably scare them. Whichever one it was, it was working as my heart dropped to my stomach, and my palms turned warm and sweaty."That would be believable if you didn't know about the prophecy."
