Her POV
The light was so bright, I couldn't help but turn away from it, shying away into the darkness that already surrounded me.
'No... the light', a voice said suddenly out of the void.
I turned around but couldn't see anything.
'Come to me', the voice said again.
'Come into the light'
I walked hesitantly towards the light and the closer I got the brighter it became. I wanted to stop but couldn't as I continued to walk on as if propelled forward by some unseen force around me, until soon the light enveloped me and there was nothing at all.
The first thing I felt was the cold. It was so cold, I missed the warmth of the light. I gingerly opened my eyes, feeling drowsy. I blinked a few times in order to get used to the darkness around me. When I felt more oriented, I tried to sit up but the pain in my head went off like a siren, reverberating through my brain, forcing me to lie down again. I laid down for a few minutes before slowly attempting to sit up again. This time the pain was bearable and I was able to focus more. I looked around and immediately realized why I felt so cold. I was in the woods laying down on the damp floor which was no doubt caused by rain. I glanced around at all the similar looking trees, failing to understand where I was or how I got here.
The only thing I remembered was the dark void. I tried to think past that, to try and remember anything before that but the headache intensified into an almost crippling pain forcing me to stop trying. I slowly stood up and looked around, unsure where to go from here or what to do when I heard a branch snap suddenly close to me. I turned around and saw two wolves standing less than 10 feet away from me, their sharp teeth bared at me. I shuddered in fear. I slowly began to step back but with each step I took, they advanced as well. One of the wolves snapped at me and I shrieked before breaking into a run, the two wolves in pursuit. My legs felt weak, my head plagued by the crippling headaches, my mind disoriented by my inability to remember anything, it didn't take long for the wolves to gain on me even as I put all my strength into my run. I turned around to see how close the wolves were and tripped on a fallen branch. The wolves seeing me on the floor slowed down their pace and began to advance towards me more slowly. My heart beat rapidly in my chest with fear as I watched them advance. I tried to stand up but a sharp pain in my leg brought me to my knees immediately, I must have twisted my ankle. The wolves must have noticed that I was defenseless and smirked at me, they kept advancing towards me until they were about three feet away from me when they stopped and began to circle around me, watching me. Once they were sure I wasn't going to fight back, one of the wolves leaped towards me and I closed my eyes waiting for the pain I was sure would follow.
After a few minutes, I felt nothing, I slowly opened my eyes and the scene that played out in front of me had me stunned. There was a third wolf now, bigger and he was fighting the first two wolves. This new wolf was bigger and had pure black fur. He was strong as he fought the other two wolves viciously. As the fight played out, my headache slowly began to increase in intensity and a sharp ringing began in my head. I groaned and held my head in my hands as I tried to stop the pain but it only got worse. The pain was so intense I couldn't focus and as such didn't see when the black wolf successfully scared the other two wolves away. I only noticed when the black wolf began to slowly advance towards me. I groaned and tried to back away as the pain increased. Soon my vision began to distort but I could vaguely see the black wolf change into a human, a man and walked towards me, slowly. I didn't see his face because at that moment everything became pitch black.
When I woke up again for the second time, it was with more ease than the first time. The pain in my head had reduced considerably and there was no sharp ringing in my ears. I gingerly opened my eyes and took in my surroundings. It was daylight again and I could see my surroundings clearly. The room was large and well furnished. The bed I laid in was big, there was a bedside table, a couch and many other things. I tried to remember how I got here when the memories from last night flooded my head. I remembered the two wolves who had chased after me and the black wolf who had saved me. I remembered that just before I blacked out I saw the black wolf changed into a human. Was he the one who brought me here? Was this his house? Just then the door opened and a young woman walked in holding a bowl in her hands. She looked up at me and when she saw me staring back at her, her eyes lit up as she hurried to my side.
"You're awake", she said as she dropped the bowl on the bedside table.
I nodded feebly as I tried to sit up. She quickly reached out to help me up
"How are you feeling?", she asked.
"Fine", I mumbled.
"That's good, I'll get the doctor now, just wait", she said as she smiled at me.
"Wait, I-", I tried to protest but she was already halfway to the door.
A few minutes later and the lady from earlier returned this time she was followed by two men. One of the men was short and stout, he looked slightly older. He also had a stethoscope on his neck so I assumed he was the doctor. The second man however completely took my breath away. Next to the doctor and the lady, he was towering tall. He had short black wavy hair that moved with every step he took. His deep blue eyes sparkled and it felt like they were drawing me in. He was easily the most handsome man I'd ever seen. He walked towards me in fluid, confident movements.
"Good day, my dear, how are you feeling?", the doctor asked, forcing me to remove my focus from the handsome man.
"I feel fine", I muttered in my response.
"Hm, I'll do a little check up now", he said but I barely heard him, my attention was fixed on the other man who stood watching at the edge of the bed.
He felt very familiar, like I had seen him before.
"Well aside from your ankle which will heal in time, everything else seems fine, are you feeling any discomfort?", the doctor asked once again, forcing my attention back.
I shook my head no.
I glanced at the other man again and it suddenly struck me why he felt so familiar. He was the black wolf who had saved me last night! I had vague memories of the wolf shifting into a human just before I blacked out, it was him, I could feel it.
"Well, like I said you'll get better. What is your name dear?", the doctor asked.
I blinked at him. I didn't know how to answer. On one hand, I was wary, the encounter with the wolves from yesterday was even more reason to be but then again this man had saved me, brought me here, wherever here was, and even had a doctor take care of me. Why would he do that if he had bad intentions?
I glanced at the young lady from earlier who was smiling encouragingly at me then at the other man who looked up at me and met my gaze for the first time since he walked into the room. I stared into his eyes and he stared back and there was something in his eyes, warmth? sincerity? that made me, in that moment, decide to tell the truth, the one thing that made me vulnerable.
"I don't know", I breathed.
"I don't remember”
Kaile's POVI stared at the strange woman who was also staring back."What do you mean you don't know?", I asked, a hint of disbelief in my tone."I don't remember", she answered.I blinked. Was she lying? But it didn't look like she was lying. I looked at the doctor."Could this be because of the attack?", I asked him."It's possible maybe she's concussed", he answered as he moved closer to inspect her."Open your eyes please", he told her and she did. He flashed a light in her eyes and examined her."Doesn't seem to be concussed", he said after a few minutes."I'm fine", she mumbled, causing all of us to turn our attention to her."I just can't remember", she muttered softly, her eyes down as she fidgeted with the sheets.Seeing her like that caused my heart to ache."Thank you doctor", I said and the doctor bowed before leaving the room.I nodded at the maid signaling her to leave as well and she bowed before leaving. With the two of us left alone in the room, I could properly take
Her POVI stared at my reflection in the mirror. It had been three days since Kaile saved me and brought me back here. My ankle had healed and I had the last doctor's appointment just this morning. Over these three days I had been trying my best to remember something but it always ended the same way, a crippling headache. I couldn't get past the dark void and it was frustrating. There was a knock on the door and I turned around excitedly."How are you feeling?", Macy asked as she popped her head in.I couldn't help the slight feeling of disappointment I felt when I saw it was her. Macy was wonderful, she was the maid who had come to see me when I first woke up. She had later told me her name and she was the sweetest and warmest person I'd met so far but I was hoping it was Kaile. Over the past three days I was here, Kaile had never failed to visit me even if it was brief visits late in the evening. He was so kind and he seemed genuinely concerned for me."I feel fine", I answered Macy
Kaile's POV"Thank you, Madam Cassandra, you can leave", I dismissed her after I had given her my instructions about Eve.She bowed and left. After she left, I let myself sink into my thoughts. The image of Eve smiling as she called her name flashed in my mind and I couldn't stop myself from smiling as well. Eve, the name really did suit her, the people I knew with that name had the most beautiful smiles."Kaile", Reuben called, pulling me out of my thoughts.I hadn't realized when he came into the room."What is it?", I asked."We've found the rogues we think you had a run in with", he said."That's good, well have we questioned them yet?", I asked."They're dead", he said in a matter of fact tone."Dead?", I questioned."Yes", he answered affirmatively."Where did you find them?", I asked."A little way past the inner boundary pass, almost in Ravenwood territory", he said and I furrowed my brows."Ravenwood territory? Well how did they die? Could you tell?", I asked."It looks like
Ezra's POV"Two attacks within the space of three days! This is getting out of hand!", Lincoln, one of the elder council members, barked.I sighed and looked at Romeo, my second in command, ignoring Lincoln's outburst of anger."The attack was swift, my Alpha", Romeo relayed, catching my glance."We had a small group of soldiers around the area and they were dispatched there immediately we heard news of the attack but by the time they got there, the rogues were nowhere to be found", he continued.I clenched my fists."Casualties?", I asked."There were no casualties but the village was thoroughly pillaged, everything had been catered away, some houses were set on fire but the boys were able to quickly put them out", he answered.I groaned as I mulled over his report."My alpha, this is indeed getting out of hand. How did things escalate to this point? The rogues are getting more and more audacious", another council member said."And what is the army doing to checkmate their actions? N
Eve's povI turned from one side of the bed, to the other, restlessly. Dripping sweat covered my face. I opened my eyes sharply sitting upright on the bed. It was a dream! My heart was thumping furiously against my chest. I moved my hands to my face dabbing it relentlessly. I picked my pillow to my chest squeezing it to myself. Fear crept into my heart slowly. This was the first time I was having that dream and it really was scary. I stood up sluggishly pulling up the blinds. The reflection of the sun hit me in the face reminding me that I woke up late. With a groan, I left for the bathroom to freshen up. Still in the bathroom, I heard the creaking sound of the door to my room. Someone was coming in? Who was that? I hurriedly washed away the soap on my face trying to get my towel hanged by the door. The dream! I was reminded. With fear, I tied my towel round my body picking up the mop stick near me. I wasn't going to give in. I must confront whoever the intruder might be. As I stood ne
Kaile's povI left Eve's room to mine worry-stricken. I felt anger boil from within me, does she have to pass through all this? My mind flashed back to the man who wanted to have something with her. I reversed my step to my seat in the main hall. Not disappointed, I met him on his knees with his hands tied behind him. I smirked dangerously as I walked towards him. I am going to get my revenge on touching Eve. Eve? Am I been possessive? Anyhow it looks like, I'm not. I took my sit slowly my eyes on the man all through. As if the man senses the boiling anger from me, he bowed his head in regret. It is too late.“Young man, look at me.” I commanded with disgust. He was still battling with himself.“I won't repeat myself.” I warned. This time he met my eyes but not for long. If looks could kill, he probably might have been dead.“Are you not one of the servant I put in charge to guide her door?” His face looks familiar. Is he one of them? I am more infuriated when he nod his hess in respon
Ezra's povI feel relieved as I settle down to my meal. The invitation I sent to Kaile was something very intentional. I know he isn't mated yet and he might not even be thinking about it anytime soon. It was also a strategy to show off my beautiful mate even though I'm not interested in her. We are both going to be mated soon but I still feel drawn to my first love. She appears in my dream once in a while so her memory still remains fresh. I will have prefer to remain single but the pack boards won't allow that. I was drawn from my thoughts by a hand which trailed my neck down to my face. Looking up, all to see it is Lydia. A silent sigh escaped my lips as I force a smile towards her.“Good morning, Alpha.”“Morning.” I reply her coldly.“When did you arrive at the pack? I heard that you followed your brother somewhere.” I enquire.“Yes, I did. I arrived this morning.”“Where did you go to if I my ask?” I can see hesitation as I ask her the question. Why is she hesitating? Is she hidi
Eve's pov I have been restless since Kaile left me; my mind was in a mess because I was thinking about several things at a time, and they are really challenging. I was reveried from my train of thoughts by a knock on the door. My heart skipped a bit; the trauma caused by the intruder was still there. “Who is there? Come in.” I said with a shaking voice. I feel relieved when I see that it is a maid. “I hope this message meets you well, young lady. I was asked to deliver this outfit to you by Alpha,” she bowed curtly. “Oh…thanks.” After collecting the outfit from her, she left. There is this eagerness I feel as I start to untie the wrap. Was the dress beautiful? The answer to my question stared directly at me when I unreveiled the package. The dress is anything far from beautiful; it is stunning; any other word to describe it should be used. With caution, I pick up the dress, putting it out at length so I can savour the view. Without wasting time, I pull the dress over my head
Kaile's point of view As we rode towards Ezra's kingdom, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that had been growing inside me since Eve told me about her dream. She had been so casual about it, so matter-of-fact, but I could sense the underlying tension in her voice.I glanced over at her, watching as the wind whipped through her hair. She was so beautiful, so strong and determined. But I knew that she was also vulnerable, that the dream had unsettled her in ways that she couldn't even begin to understand.I felt a pang of jealousy, of possessiveness. Who was this Ezra person, and why was he featuring in Eve's dreams? I knew that I had no right to feel this way, that Eve was free to dream about whoever she wanted. But I couldn't help the way I felt.As we rode, I found myself stealing glances at Eve, trying to read her expression. Was she thinking about Ezra? Was she wondering what it would be like to be with him?I felt a surge of frustration, of anger. Why was I letting this
Eve's point of view Kaile's words sent a shiver down my spine. I knew that I had stumbled upon something important, something that could potentially uncover the identity of the killer."What do you know about the black dagger?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.Kaile's eyes locked onto mine, his expression intense. "I've heard rumors of a black dagger being used in ancient rituals," he said, his voice low and cautious. "But I never thought it was connected to the killer."I felt a surge of excitement mixed with fear. We were getting close to uncovering the truth, but we were also getting closer to danger."We need to tell Ezra about this," I said, my voice firm.Kaile nodded in agreement. "I'll go get him. But Eve, we need to be careful. If the killer is using a black dagger, we don't know what they're capable of."I nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. We were playing with fire, but we had to see this through. As Kaile turned to leave, I called out to him. "Kaile."He tur
stood at the window, staring out into the darkness, my mind racing with thoughts of the dream and the black dagger. I knew I had to tell Ezra about it, but a part of me hesitated. Should I tell Kaile too?I shook my head, pushing the thought aside. It was late, and I was too tired to think clearly. I would decide what to do in the morning.I walked over to the washbasin and splashed some cold water on my face, trying to clear my head. The cool water was refreshing, and I felt a little more alert.I dried my face and walked back to bed, my mind still whirling with thoughts of the dream and the black dagger. I climbed into bed and pulled the covers up to my chin, trying to shut out the thoughts and get some rest. But as I lay there, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. The dream had felt so real, and the image of the black dagger kept flashing in my mind.I sighed and closed my eyes, trying to will myself to sleep. But my mind was still racing, and I knew it was goi
Eve's point of view I was caught off guard by Kaile's sudden kiss. I had been about to apologize, to tell him that I couldn't return his feelings. But then his lips were on mine, and everything else melted away.At first, I was stiff, unsure of how to react. But as Kaile's kiss deepened, I felt myself relaxing, felt myself getting lost in the sensation of his lips on mine.It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. Kaile's kiss was passionate and demanding, but it was also gentle and tender. He kissed me like he meant it, like he was pouring his heart and soul into every moment.I felt myself getting swept up in the kiss, felt myself responding to Kaile's passion. My arms crept up around his neck, pulling him closer as our lips moved together. For a moment, I forgot about everything else. I forgot about Ezra, forgot about the danger that lurked in the shadows. All I could think about was Kaile, and the way he made me feel. But as the kiss deepened, I felt a pang of guilt. I w
Kalie's point of view I sat in my study, staring blankly at the papers in front of me. My mind was a thousand miles away, consumed by thoughts of Eve.I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that had been growing inside me since Eve returned from Ezra's kingdom. I had seen the way Ezra looked at her, the way he smiled at her, and it made my blood boil.I didn't want to lose Eve. I didn't want her to be taken away from me by Ezra or anyone else. But I was scared to admit my true feelings to her. What if she didn't feel the same way?I sighed, rubbing my temples. I had to face the truth. I was in love with Eve. I had been for a long time, but I had been too afraid to admit it.The thought sent a shiver down my spine. What would happen if Eve found out? Would she feel the same way, or would she reject me?I looked up, my eyes falling on a small, leather-bound book on my shelf. It was a book of poetry, one that Eve had given me a long time ago. I opened it, flipping through the pages
Eve's point of view I slowly opened my eyes, groggily taking in my surroundings. I was in my own bed, and Kalie was sitting beside me, his eyes fixed on my face.I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as I realized he had stayed with me all night. "Kalie, why are you still here?" I asked, trying to sound calm despite my embarrassment.Kalie's eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled. "I wanted to make sure you were okay," he said, his voice low and gentle.I sat up, trying to reassure him. "I'm fine, Kalie. Really. You can go now."But Kalie didn't move. He just kept looking at me, his eyes searching mine as if he was trying to see into my soul."Kalie, please," I said, trying to persuade him. "I'm really okay. You can go back to your own hut now."Kalie hesitated, his eyes still fixed on mine. But then he nodded, his face softening into a gentle smile."Okay, Eve," he said, standing up. "But if you need anything, you promise to call for me?"I nodded, feeling a warmth spread through my c
Ezra's point of view I glared at my reflection in the mirror, my eyes blazing with anger. My face was a mess of bruises and cuts, courtesy of Kalie's fierce beating.I clenched my jaw, my hands shaking with rage as I cleaned the wounds. How dare he? I was the future king, and he had the audacity to attack me like that? But what really fueled my anger was the fact that Kalie had ruined my plans. Eve was supposed to be under my control by now, but thanks to Kalie's interference, she was now safely back in her hut.I seethed with frustration, my mind racing with ways to get back at Kalie. He thought he had won, but little did he know, I had only just begun to play.A knock at the door broke my reverie, and I turned to see Lydia standing in the entrance. Her eyes widened as she took in my battered face."My lord," she gasped. "What happened?"I waved my hand dismissively. "It's nothing," I growled. "Just a minor setback."Lydia's eyes sparkled with curiosity, but she knew better than to
Kaile's point of view The healer's face was grim as she examined Eve. She muttered to herself, her hands moving quickly and surely as she worked."What did they give her?" the healer asked, her voice sharp with concern."I don't know," I admitted, feeling a surge of frustration. "I found her like this at Ezra's castle. I think he must have given her something."The healer's eyes narrowed. "I'll need to run some tests," she said. "But I think I can help her."I nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. The healer was the best in the kingdom—if anyone could help Eve, it was her.The healer quickly got to work, mixing up a concoction of herbs and potions. She fed it to Eve, who swallowed it down without resistance. As we waited for the medicine to take effect, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What had Ezra been thinking, giving Eve some kind of drug? And what did he plan to do with her?I gritted my teeth, feeling a surge of anger. I was going to find out what Ezra had p
Kalie's point of view I quickly carried Eve out of the castle and to my car, parked nearby. I opened the door and gently placed her in the passenger seat.As I buckled her in, Eve suddenly started to squirm and struggle, her hands grasping at her dress. "I'm so hot," she whispered, her voice husky and desperate. "I need to get out of this."Before I could stop her, Eve started to remove her dress, pulling it down over her shoulders and exposing her bare skin. I felt a surge of desire mixed with concern, and I quickly reached out to cover her."Eve, stop," I said firmly, trying to keep my eyes off her bare skin. "You can't just...we need to get you home."But Eve just kept repeating, "I'm so hot," over and over, her eyes glassy and unfocused. I knew I had to get her out of there, and fast, before things got any worse. I quickly got into the driver's seat and started the engine, peeling out of the castle grounds as fast as I could. As I drove, Eve continued to squirm and struggle in the
