"Gods do you all have an entire library in your minds?"

Kyla giggles. "It's not difficult. It merely requires practice."

"Yeah I don't think I could ever remember all of that stuff even with decades of practice."

"The rune helps. Queen Syrra and I come from the same clan where knowledge is valued above everything so we both have the rune for knowledge," she tells me.

I frown. "I thought only clan leaders get the tattoo?"

"I was the clan leader for more than a year while Queen Syrra was building her throne."

My eyes go wide. "Aren't you only eleven?"

She nods. "Twelve in a few weeks," she replies.

"Okay so who's the leader now?"

"My brother. He took over so I could train under Jalen."

"Hey what's going on in here?"

My gaze snaps to my mate in the doorway. Her eyebrow is raised and there is an amused smile on her lips.

"I'm learning tons of new things, like how Kyla apparently took over as clan leader

"Oh gods fuck yes. Shit. Fuck. Fuck me!"My eyes widen at the noises coming from the bathroom. "Ash what the hell are you doing in there?""I'm playing leave me alone."My eyes widen as I walk into the bathroom. Then I shake my head. Ash sits on the floor, staring at the old video game in his hands. I raise an eyebrow at him. "Having fun there?""Not anymore," he frowns, roughly setting it down.I chuckle. "Ash it's just a video game. They're hard to win," I say as I pick it up. "Where did you get this anyway?""Your mom gave it to me, she said I needed to modernize a little," he shrugs.I glance down at it and my heart drops. Only one person in our house liked retro video games like this.It was Maia's,Azazel murmurs.Yeah.I carefully place it on my dresser then clear my throat. "Did my mom give you anything else?" I ask."No but we got to talking—we have a lot in common&mdas

I let the waves of heat roll over me, sighing at the energy that seeps into my aching muscles. It's quiet, so quiet I can hear my own heartbeat. After a few minutes of staring into the flames I find myself humming. I haven't heard the song in years, and I don't remember the words but the tune is permanently etched in my mind. The fire seems to almost dance to it.Footsteps snap me out of my trance, and I sit up, my heart pounding. My eyebrows furrow at the dark shadow of the dragon king—only recognizable by his golden hair, gleaming in the light of the volcano."I'm sorry I didn't think anyone was going to be up here," he murmurs."What are you doing here?" I ask.He shrugs. "I couldn't sleep," he says."Where's your mate?""He's helping his mother."I frown. "It's the middle of the night.""Yeah well she's still struggling, and some days are worse than others," he mutters."Right," I mumble, scooting

This should not be this difficult. It's not difficult at all, you just suck at magic,Lucifer snorts.I can control fire better than Jaxon!Maybe when you were ten. He's been way better than you for years now,he scoffs."Everything okay?" Syrra asks.I glance up. "Yeah. Lucifer's just an asshole."Hey!he growls.Oh don't even try to deny it.Fine I'm an asshole and you're stupid,he snarks.Good luck doing fire magic without my help.I roll my eyes and sigh heavily. "Gods he's such a big baby," I mutter.Syrra laughs. "You're both babies sometimes," she remarks."I'm not a baby!""Kaine you practically threw a tantrum when Jalen said you're not allowed to train for another two weeks.""I did not throw a tantrum," I growl."Well you tried to punch him and then threw a spell book at his head

"Could we send the guards out? Make them at least stay far away from the palace so we can't hear them?""I suppose, though there's a chance they consider this payback for all the noise we make," he smirks.I feel heat rush to my cheeks. "Right, they probably don't appreciate that at all," I mumble sheepishly. He grins up at me. "If they have a problem with it, they're welcome to complain to me."I roll my eyes. "Yeah like they're actually dumb enough to tell the dragon king to keep it down.""True. Well they're starting to get on my nerves too so I'm going to try to send

I snarl, struggling to maintain control of my wolf as I stalk closer. Her eyes fly wide and she takes a few steps back. "Look I'm sorry! I didn't want to do this to you but Lyza made the wrong choice! I don't have alpha blood and I have no idea what I'm doing! I'm begging you―please!" she whimpers, tears running down her face."I said no," I growl before turning away. I hear her shift and take off into the forest only seconds later."Well that was brutal," Zella murmurs."Telling her nicely didn't seem to get the point across the first three times so I decided to change tactics," I snap, storming through the trees. My mate follows close behind, letting out a heavy sigh. "She's just a kid Angel, you can't seriously expect her to be able to handle this?""Well what the hell do you want me to do?""

"Go away.""I want to talk to you—""I said go away.""Please—""Gods just leave me alone!"I breathe a sigh of annoyance. "Fara just listen to what he has to say, we'll be leaving soon anyway," I tell her.She growls under her breath but says nothing more as she follows the boy into the hallway. I turn back to my son, currently splayed out on the floor."Are you okay?""No."I frown a little when he continues staring at the ceiling. "Are you going to tell me why?"He lets out a heavy breath then starts chewing on his lip. "I miss home," he finally admits, glancing over at me. "This place is like a war zone when the monsters come, and I feel like the village idiot all the time."The pain on his face makes my dragon growl. "This place is very different from dragon or wolf territory. The culture and environment here are the most diverse of all the territories and it's what makes them so powerful.

"Did it kill me yet?" Ash asks.My heart still beats furiously, and I can feel my hands shaking. "What the hell is that?"He glances back at the creature crouching on his chest. "I think it's a leopard cub."My eyes grow wider when I realize how calm and undeterred, he is. "Why the hell isn't this freaking you out?""Because I'm dead inside."I roll my eyes. "Right," I mutter. "Well do you have an idea as to what it's doing in our bedroom?""I just want to know why it won't get off me?" He growls. The cat gives a little chirp and jumps down onto the floor. A faint trail of smoke seems to follow it when it moves. Its paws are completely silent on the floor as it paces back and forth beside the bed."I think it's safe for you to get down now."I glare at Ash, but he just watches with amusement as I climb down from the bedframe."I don't think I've ever seen you move that fast," he chuckles."Yeah well I never

They’re still gone. I growl in frustration as I turn back towards the fire burning in front of me. “Since when is this spot a tourist attraction?” I grumble under my breath.“My apologies Fara, I didn’t mean to bother you. My name is Aurelia, I just thought you might want to know what happened to your brothers so Lyza told me where you were.”My eyes widen a little. “They’re not my brothers.”She shrugs. “Perhaps not by blood,” she mutters.I feel my annoyance wane slightly and don’t say another word as she sits down on the rock about a meter away. I continue to sit in silence as the woman tells me what happ

You’re kidding right?” I scoff.“Well I mean—”“They’re covered in open torture wounds and new scars, they look like they haven’t had food or water since they were taken, not to mention the fact that neither of them have woken up since they got back.”She sighs, putting her hand over mine. “I’m sorry Kaine, it’s just that after everything Jada said, I was almost expecting them to be dead when we finally found them. “What happened here?” I asked.I heard Sorin sigh. ‘I don’t know,’ he replied.Through my dæmon’s eyes, I could see the barren wasteland over a hundred kilometres away. It used to be dense green forests filled with all kinds of mysterious creatures, but now there was nothing. The trees were gone, all that was left was dirt and small flecks of ash—somehow it had all been burned to the ground without anyone even seeing a flame or trail of smoke. It was just gone.Nothing moved in the vast sea of gray and as far as I could tell, Sorin was the only soul in the sky or on the ground. The air shifted as we came to the edge of the grey. It felt charged with an energy that was far from good; it set my nerves on fire and filled me with dread.Angel territory.“Has it really been right here? All this time it was right here?” I asked, my voice cracking with frustration. My dæmon sighed. ‘It has, you would never have been able to find it Jada, it’s hidden using magic far beyond your own abilities.

The tingling between my shoulder blades is getting worse. I’m not sure how much longer I can handle just sitting in this tiny room.I push my back against the wall and will the irritation to magically vanish. When the pins and needles persist, I let my muscles relax with a heavy sigh. It’s far from the first time I’ve been punished for attacking a superior. At this point, I think it’s fair to call it normal actually. All I can do is hope that there never comes a day where they decide to make my punishment legitimate. It’s extremely uncomfortable, but that’s about it. It doesn’t cause permanent damage—mental or physical—and it’s nothing compared to what I’ve already endured. I’d still rather not deal with this feeling right now though.I throw the ball again and watch it bounce off the floor, then the wall, then catch it when it comes back to me. I move to throw it again, but pause at th

"What's going on?" I ask, my eyes darting between the two. Both look tense but Jada seems absolutely terrified. "The angels have been using magic to hide their territory. It's her mother's magic—that's why we haven't been able to find it," Nix says. I blink. "I still don't understand." Jada rubs her temples roughly and collapses into a crouch. "My mother is an extremely powerful witch. She's like a thousand years old so she has more experience than even our elders. She disappeared a few years ago, just before Syrra's parents vanished," she mumbles—almost incoherently. "Wait—how do you know it's hers? Do you guys have like a signature or something?" She nods. "Powerful ones do. My mother's magic is cerulean—" "What the fuck you canseethe color of the magic?" I interrupt. She flicks her wrist and colorful sparks burst from her palm making me scramble backwards in fright. Her eyes gleam with a dozen different

The high-pitched wail coming from down the hallway. "Oh, that," I mumble."What is it?"I chew my lip as I listen, trying to decipher the sound. I sit listening for several minutes before Nix nudges my shoulder."Why don't you just ask Sorin?" they ask with a heavy sigh.I grimace. "Because then everyone else is going to bother me and get upset that I broke the rule. The stupid fuckers are so jealous and needy it's ridiculous," I grumble."I'm sure they'll understand this one time, I just really need to know if that sound is just some creature being annoying if we should actually go help somebody and it's too far for Zizi to go—and I have absolutely no idea where it's coming from," they tell me."Fine," I sigh. "You know the chance of success would increase if you two worked together."She glares at me. "Well no shit. Does it look like she's willing to work with me though?" She snaps.I look past her to the other side of the library where her cousin is sitting on the floor, her mate standing beside her—I pause. Nix isn't just standing next to Jada, they're standingguard."No it doesn't look like she's willing," I sigh, leaning back against the bookshelves.
