The air in Derek’s pack was heavy with tension, thick enough to choke on. I stood on the steps of the main hall, looking out over the courtyard as the wolves went about their duties. Their movements were stiff and their conversations were hushed. Even the young ones seemed subdued and their usual energy was dampened by the fear and uncertainty that hung over the pack.

I was no stranger to pressure or doubt, but this felt different. The weight of Gloria’s warnings, Gilly’s erratic behaviour, Zone’s condition, and now Dominic’s cryptic words before his death—it all pressed down on me and it crushed me. For the first time after Ardan’s disappearance, I didn’t know what to do.

“Serena,” Ardan’s voice called softly from behind me.

I turned to see him standing in the doorway with a concerned expression. Beside him, Rachel and Tobias waited with their faces mirroring his unease.

It was dawn and the sun’s ray casted long shadows across the ancient books scattered on the table. Rachel sat among them with her hands moving methodically as she flipped through pages and her brow was furrowed in concentration. The weight of the pack’s survival, of Gilly’s fate, and of Zone’s worsening condition, seemed to press down on all of us, but Rachel carried it with quiet determination.I stood near the door, pacing as I waited for her to find something—anything—that could guide us.“How much longer?” I asked, trying to keep the impatience from my voice.Rachel didn’t look up. “As long as it takes,” she said. “These books are ancient. If there’s an answer, it’s buried deep.”I sighed, turning to look out the window. Derek’s pack had grown quiet since the confrontation during the council meeting, but the silence wasn’t peaceful. It was heavy, unea

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 134 THE SWAMP

The air around us sparkled for a brief moment before settling into the damp, oppressive atmosphere of the swamp. Ardan and I staggered as our surroundings materialised in front of us: a vast expanse of muddy water, twisted trees, and a blanket of fog that shrouded our vision. The teleportation spell had brought us to the right place, but something felt wrong.Ardan ran a hand through his hair, trying to summon the magic that had served him so well before, but nothing came. His focus faltered, and he cursed under his breath."What is it?" I asked, sensing the shift in his mood."My magic…" Ardan began, looking around in confusion. "It’s not working here. I can’t feel the flow of energy."My brow furrowed. "But… we’re here, Ardan. The swamp. This is where the flower should be. I’m sure your magic will come back when we—"Ardan’s eyes were sharp, scanning the surrounding fog. "It’s not just that.

Ardan’s PoVI was ten years old, running through the woods with my best friend, Ren. Ren and I were inseparable, always finding excuses to sneak away from our lessons and explore the forest that bordered our pack’s land. That day, we’d wandered farther than usual, chasing the echo of a distant waterfall. The sound was faint, teasing us with its mystery, and Ren was determined to find it.“Come on, Ardan!” he called with his grin wide as he darted ahead.“Slow down, Ren,” I shouted, laughing as I tried to keep up.We were so caught up in the thrill of the chase that we didn’t notice the stillness creeping into the air. The birds stopped singing, the rustle of leaves quieted, and the usual hum of the forest faded into an eerie silence. It wasn’t until Ren screamed that I realised something was wrong.I came to a stop with my laughter dying in my throat as I turned to see him frozen in place and his eyes wide with terror. At first, I didn’t understand what he was looking at—then I saw it

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 136 FRAGILE RECOVERY

Serena’s POVThe palace halls were quiet when we arrived and the weight of our mission was still hanging over us. The antidote, carefully wrapped in protective leaves, felt like the most precious cargo I’d ever carried.Rachel led the way to the medical wing, where Zone lay pale and motionless. His breathing was shallow, his chest barely rising with each breath. My heart clenched at the sight of him. He’d always been so strong, so unyielding, and seeing him like this felt like a blow to the gut.“We need to act fast,” Rachel said with her voice clipped as she began preparing the antidote.Ardan stood beside her with his jaw tight as he watched her every move. “How long before we know if it works?” he asked.Rachel didn’t answer immediately, her focus on carefully grinding the petals into a paste. “It depends,” she said finally. “If the poison hasn’t spread too far, we should see improvement within a few hours. If it has…” She trailed off, not needing to finish the thought.I swallowed

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 137 TRAPPED IN THE VOID

Gilly’s POVThe world around me was nothing but darkness, an endless expanse of shadows that stretched in every direction. Time didn’t exist here, nor did sound or sensation. I floated in the emptiness, a weightless figure adrift in an ocean of nothingness.I didn’t know how I’d gotten here, but I knew one thing: I was trapped. At first, I thought this was death—a bleak and silent afterlife where my thoughts were my only companions. But I still felt the faintest pull of something beyond this void. It was like a tether, thin and fragile, connecting me to something—or someone.“Serena.“Her name flickered in my mind, a faint light in the darkness. Memories of her surged forward unbidden: her fierce determination, her unyielding loyalty, the way she had fought for all of us, even when the odds were stacked against her.I tried to call out to her, but my voice didn’t carry. The void swallowed every word before it could form. The shadows shifted. Slowly at first, then faster, swirling arou

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 138 THE PATH OF THE WOLF MOTHER

Serena’s POVThe forest air was thick with the scent of damp earth and rotting leaves, a reminder of how far we were from any place of comfort or safety. The sun had long since disappeared behind a thick canopy of twisted branches, leaving only faint shafts of light to guide our way.My senses were sharper than ever. Every shift in the wind, every crack of a branch, every faint scent carried on the air seemed amplified, as though the forest itself was whispering to me.“She’s close,” I said with my voice steady but low.Zone tightened his grip on his weapon and his jaw clenched. “I hope so,” he muttered. “I’m tired of chasing shadows.”Ardan placed a reassuring hand on Zone’s shoulder with his steady presence a calming force. “If Serena says she’s close, she is,” he said simply.I nodded as my Wolf mother instincts guided me. This power was still new, its limits and purpose unclear, but I trusted it.“She’s been here for a while,” I said as my eyes scanned the forest. “There’s magic e

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 139 THE BREAKING POINT

THE BREAKING POINTThe air in the library was suffocating and I all I could smell were the old books Rachel had managed to source. Rachel and I had spent hours combing through every tome, scroll, and scrap of parchment we could find, searching for something—anything—that might help wake Gilly from her coma.“Anything yet?” I asked tiredly.Rachel didn’t look up, her fingers just kept flipping through the brittle pages of an ancient book. “Nothing,” she muttered with her frustration evident.I sighed, leaning back in my chair and rubbing my temples. The silence of the library, which was usually comforting, now felt oppressive.“Keep looking,” I said, though my words felt hollow.Rachel glanced at me with her face pale and drawn. “Serena, we’ve been at this for hours. If there was something here, we would have found it by now.”“We can’t stop,” I said firmly. “There has to be an answer.”Rachel hesitated before nodding, though I could see the doubt in her eyes. The sound of something cr

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 140 THE FINAL DECISION

The council chamber was silent as I stood before them with my heart heavy but resolute. Members of Derek’s pack sat in a semicircle with their eyes filled with worry and confusion. Tobias was beside me and his brow furrowed as he glanced my way. He didn’t know what I was about to say, but I had no doubt he suspected it wasn’t good.I took a deep breath, letting the weight of my decision settle over me. “Thank you all for coming,” I began with my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.The wolves murmured quietly, their unease was palpable.“I’ve come to a decision,” I continued, looking out over the gathered wolves. “The witches are targeting this pack because of me. Every attack, every loss—it's all because I’m here. They won’t stop until they get what they want.”Tobias shifted uncomfortably, but I pressed on before he could interrupt.“I can’t allow more innocent lives to be lost because of me,” I said with my voice growing firmer. “That’s why I’ve decided to leave. Tobias will

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 261 A FAKE DEATH

Evelyn’s PoVThe dagger felt heavy and cold in my palm. Odessa’s cold demand rang in my ears. Kill Callum. Bring me his head. This wasn’t a test or ,twisted game to see how far I would go to prove my loyalties. I just had to do it. I knew I had to do it.If I turned it down, she would turn against me. If I carried out her order, I would lose the only ally I had managed to win over. Either way, she would win.Not this time.Finian walked beside me as we traveled through the thick forest. His expression was a mixture of concern and determination. He had not questioned me for warning Callum. He had not hollered when I insisted we needed to fake a death, to give like a disguise for the purpose of tricking Odessa into believing I had done my job. Instead, he nodded, affirming my sense of loyalty."Are you sure it will work?" he asked softly."It must." I responded. "If Odessa realises we lied to her, we would be dead."

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 260 THE GATHERING STORM

Evelyn PoVThe air in Odessa's camp grew thicker with every step I took, like the very ground beneath my feet was crying out in warning for me to turn back. I walked in with a smile that forced itself on my face, burying the reality under layers of lies. I had to put on a show-pretend that the mission had gone as expertly as planned, that Callum's blood was still warm on my blade.Every rogue I passed seemed to look right through me. I couldn't tell whether it was suspicion, or merely the paranoia that clawed at my insides. Odessa's camp had always had a place of hard edges and cold shadows, but now it felt, knowing I was living a lie in a den of wolves, as if I were walking on a frozen lake, with every step about to crack the surface and plunge me into darkness.Odessa was seated at the main fire with her figure surrounded by flames. She didn't move when I approached, but I knew she'd sensed me from long before I closed in. One could call her a predator. Her in

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 259 LUCA’s ESCAPE

Author PoVLuca ached with every breath he took. The iron shackles had rubbed a nasty patch on his wrist. Every single muscle in his body was screaming at him to stop moving, but push through he would. Not when he could see freedom close enough to touch. The plan hardly had a chance from the word go. For days, he and his fellow inmate, a fierce, rogue girl, Lyra, whispered between the bars of their cells, keeping a close eye on the guards and drawing up a mental picture of their movements. Though men of Odessa had hardly shown much compassion, they had also been very much arrogant-they thought the prisoners were broken and quite incapable of fighting back, which was a mistake they would regret.Tonight was their only chance. The moment the guard opened the door to bring their rations, Lyra lunged, yanking the guard towards her. With her rusty chain, she started to choke him. Luca did not register the pain biting all over his limbs as he withdrew the dagger hanging on the fallen guard'

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 258 A DANGEROUS ALLIANCE

Evelyn’s PoVThe moon sank in the sky and bathed Odessa's encampment with a relatively eerie light. I felt my hands curl into fists as I stood before her, listening to her outline yet another command: a mission to wipe out a rogue faction that would not swear allegiance to her. Another pointless war; yet another bloodbath to stoke her insatiable thirst for power."This is your chance to show me what you're made of," Odessa said in what might be described as a thick mocking tone, leaning her back against the large wooden table in her tent. "I have been very lenient with you, Evelyn; but this is where I expect your commitment."It was a lie, of course. It was not proving myself. It was about her control. She hoped that I would become a weapon, which she could point at her enemies and let them have it without hesitation.I gritted my teeth. "What if I refuse?"Odessa's eyes became dark. "You won't."A grin from her caused my body to tremble from head to toe.She was right: my survival an

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 257 LUCA’s CAPTIVITY

Author PoVThe chains that bound Luca were terribly heavy, and every time he moved, they cut into his skin. Bruised and battered, he was stuck in this dank underground prison which reeked of rot and spoilage. He had lost track of time-and that felt like an eternity-or days, possibly weeks. Each moment in the dimly-lit cell felt endless; every second was a reminder of how he had failed. He had been so sure it was going to work.So sure he would finish off Evelyn and make her pay for what she had done.Yet now, as he sat in the filth of Odessa's prison, he was sure of nothing anymore.A soft chuckle traveled from the adjacent cell soon afterward, pulling him out of his thoughts.“Well, well," drawled the voice. "Looks like you're still kicking."Luca turned his head toward the voice. A girl was sitting with her back against the wall of the cell bide the one he occupied, both knees drawn to her chest. Her eyes were alive and sharp, glistening blue in the torchlight. A ragged smear of dir

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 256 WHISPERS OF REBELLION

Evelyn PoVThe cold steel glinted in my grip, heavy as never before. My heart sounded in my ears almost mythically, nonetheless my hands were steady. The silence stretched itself unbearably long, choking me as all eyes fixed on me.In one swift motion, I brought the knife down.A gasp went up from the crowd. A sharp wave of blood rushed into the air. I could hear Odessa approach slowly, her breath almost audibly eager against the still of the night.Yet Luca was still on his feet.Breaths ragged, around all that pain in his bones; he was alive. I had not touched him.It was my blood that trickled onto the ground and pooled at my feet, which I had crudely sliced. My fingers were stiff with pain as I raised my chin.Murmurs went through the gathered rogues. They were not expecting this. None of them were."Evelyn," Odessa cried out, calm together with a fright. "What are you trying to do?"I swallowed the burn in my throat and met her gaze head-on. "You wanted a sacrifice," I said with

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 255 Evelyn’s Revenge Plan

Evelyn PoV“One, two, three, four…. Fifty, sixty-nine, a hundred…. No, no, no…” I breathed.I had stopped counting how many lives I had taken. At first, I would wave it off with justifications such as "they're all enemies, threats to my survival", or "I'm doing what I had to, to stay alive." But the excuses had become stale. Now, in the stark silence of my cell, their faces haunted me.There was the young warrior who had drawn his blade just as I struck him down. His eyes had been filled with terror, pleading, as though he had something to live for. I hadn't hesitated. There was the woman with that desperate look in her eyes, hands bloody and reaching for my clothes in an appeal for mercy. I had felt a flicker of hesitation that night. But Odessa had been watching, satisfaction shining in her golden eyes. I couldn't allow weakness. So, I had done what was expected of me.With each kill, I felt t

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 254 A Reckless Decision

Author PoVThe night air carried with it a choking fear while Ardan led the way through a narrow, brushed-out trail in the thick forest. Their footsteps were softly swallowed by the damp earth. Fixing their gaze a little higher, they made use of the moon light, working through the thick canopy of the giants above only to find the moon sailing low in the night. Earlier that day, they had dispatched some of their own for patrol, but no word yet had come back. That alone would be enough to raise concern.“They haven’t returned yet. What do we do, Alpha?” One of the soldiers reported.“They are soldiers, they can make it on their own. Atlas it’s what we were all trained for.” Another insisted.“That is no way to talk, Elko.” Marcus cautioned.Ardan, being the cautions of the group, was the first to insist that they go after them. Marcus agreed, but his gut twisted at the thought of what they might find. W

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 253 Odessa’s Next Move

Evelyn PoVI ought to have guessed that Odessa always had a hidden agenda. When she first took me in with her pack, she wore a smile very much like one of triumph, but I chose to believe that it stemmed from the weight of my own power that I bore. I told myself I could keep her at bay. I could stay sharp, keep control somehow, and leave at the right time.I was mistaken. The summons came at the dawn of another day. A simple message written with agonising care trailed under my door. A “Come to my chambers. Immediately.“For some reason, a heavier thump was felt in each step I took there. Odessa had a gift for making even her allies tread a fine line—the bottomless pit lying just a step away—but with me now fidgeting and uneasy, something felt amiss.Odessa sat on her desk chair with a glacial calmness about her as I entered. Last time I checked, she didn’t invite me to sit, suggesting a loss for my side in what might be an interesting debate."Evelyn," she said, softening her tone but
