I ignore Miranda’s question mostly because I’m in no position to answer when these guys are so close, I’m not taking the risk of them hearing me.
“But-”
“Go now or I’ll call security, I have work to do so make your decision quick.”
“The f**k, you’re lying to me. We saw her come through here.” The guy responds harshly and I flinch at the sound of aggression in his voice.
“You curse at me one more time boy, I’m going to pummel you to the ground!” The old man points and threateningly takes a step forward.
“I’ll like to see you try.”
“Hey!” A girl suddenly intervenes. “There isn’t gonna be any fighting here. I’m leaving okay, am not getting myself in trouble because of you Kevin.” I hear retreating footsteps and let out a breath of relief.
“Come on man let’s go, it’s not worth it. And who knows, she might still be inside.”
I lean forward a little bit and see them, some guy with dark brown hair pulling on the arm of a black guy with a purple Mohawk as the rest of their friends head for the exit.
“You watch yourself old man.” Purple Mohawk warns, raising a finger in his direction before leaving.
I breathe out a sigh of relief, slumping back to lean against the wall and the old man turns to me when he grunts sarcastically.
“Nice brother you got there, ”
I smile in response and stood up slowly, dusting off my clothes.
“You get going too. I wasn’t joking when I said you can’t be here.”
He turns to leave without waiting for a response and I quickly yell out in gratitude. “Thank you!”
“L.K... Hel-look… L.K... are you still there?”
Hearing her voice and remembering the interview makes me roll my eyes in annoyance, but I put the phone back to my ear reluctantly.
“I don’t think she can hear me guys, looks like the call got disconnected or something.”
“I’m still here Miranda, sorry for that, I got distracted again,” I say and run a hand through my hair. “Listen, Miranda, for private reasons I can’t disclose how we came into an arrangement. But, I can tell you that I too lost a lot in other for me to get those rights.”
Paying them off took out a big chunk of my savings, but it was worth it. I’ve earned a lot thanks to all the work I’ve ever done after my popularity skyrocketed and my family’s debts had been paid.
I never spent a single cent of my money on leisure things and instead worked my butt off for every penny, sometimes it amazes me that I had that kind of money just sitting in my account.
But, it also pleases me to see how far I’ve come with all my hard work.
In simple terms, I'm not broke and I won’t be for as long as I don’t spend it frivolously, but I sure as hell still have to work hard in others to get back all that I’ve lost.
I could only get away with giving up an additional ten million dollars due to some threats I issued, my agency is not one with a squeaky clean record and if the information I have ever gotten leaked, they would have lost everything they’d built.
I still have copies hidden away as leverage just in case they try to get revenge like I know they would, which is why I need to get out of this country as soon as possible.
As far as Slim-Jim is here in New York, New York will forever be a place where I can never get the work I want.
“I guess after years of being in this industry I adopted some business skills.” I joke, and Miranda laughs softly in response.
“It’s been set already; I have a few agencies interested in signing with me and while on vacation I’m going to consider my options carefully. Nothing will be revealed until all deals are final.”
Okay, I’m lying, but in other for me to work again this is how it’s going to be.
People need to know or at least think, I’m in demand and there’s a possible chance they could lose the sweet benefits that come with my brand.
“Sounds serious, looks like there’s going to be some major competition folks. Unfortunately, this is all the time we have left with you L.K, it was lovely listening to you and I wish you good luck on the journey awaiting you in the future. I hope we have another chance to interview you, and this time it’s going to be face to face. But before you go let’s give our audience a small shout please.”
“It was a pleasure Miranda, and I hope we do too. For those fans who have been supporting me, I want to say thank you so much, I appreciate all the love you’ve given me and I couldn’t be any happier for it. I have to go now, but thanks for the interview, Miranda.”
“No, thank you L.K. Well, that’s it for today's people. As always I’m your host Miranda Lain and this is Radio Splash FM.”
I cut the call and slump against the wall behind me, relieved to finally be done with the interview.
The smell of garbage reminded me of the fact that I’m still standing in-between two dumpsters, so I quickly made my way back inside.
Closing the door behind me I run back upstairs since there’s no other way out of this stairwell.
Reaching the emergency doors, I nudge it forward and quickly survey the area before walking out.
But as luck would have it as soon as I start heading towards the elevator I spot the group chasing me.
They, unfortunately, turn in my direction and my eyes widen in alarm when they connect with the dark brown eyes of the purple Mohawk guy, and without a second thought, I bolted.
Pounding footsteps rush behind me and I stop on a certain floor.
Panicking, I look at both ends of the narrow passage and rush down the left end. I turn down a corner and stop abruptly, staring at the red brick wall in disbelief.Whirling on my feet, I let out a strangled sound when I see the same dead-end on the opposite side.I take a peek past the wall I’m leaning on to see the coast is clear, but judging by the sound of their approaching steps it won’t be long before I get caught. The pounding of my heart drummed in my ears as I contemplated what course of action to make next.I turn in a full circle, trying to think of something when a slightly ajar door on the opposite wall caught my eye. Without thinking I rush inside and left the door an inch open so I can tell when they were close.Hearing them draw closer I swallow heavily, silently trying to keep my breathing steady and low.“Damn it all, I could have sworn I saw her come this way.”&
One month later… “Lana… Lana get your ass up it’s time for school!”I groan and bury my head underneath my covers as I roll onto my stomach in bed. I was trying to get back to sleep when I heard the sound of my bedroom door bang open and felt my brother jump on my body, landing heavily on my back.Feeling my breath get knocked out of me, I struggle but push off his fat body and sit up with a yell. “Jay!”Jayden Kang, my idiot of a twin shrugs and flashes me a teasing grin, his emerald green eyes glinting mischievously as he says in a sing-song voice. “Dad told me to wake you however possible sis.”Pressing a sloppy kiss to my cheek, he sits up and rolls off my bed. “Now get up, we have school to get to.” I watch him walk away without waiting for a response and glare at his back while he scratches his curly bed hair t
Damn, I need to restudy the streets of Seoul. I can barely recall my left from my right. When we got to the bus stop, an old woman and two salarymen dressed in slightly bigger suits were the only people waiting for the bus.I take a seat beside the old woman while Jayden chooses to stand with his arms crossed over his chest.“Is he that bad, the principal I mean?” He turns to me with a grimace. “He’s terrible.” “Great,” I mutter sarcastically and change the subject. “What about K-STAR Highschool, what’s it like?”While I take great interest in modelling, I decided to join my brother in his newly formed art high school as a dancer. When I returned I was a little surprised to learn he found a deep passion for music, he always preferred to spend his time in dad’s restaurant we thought he’d like to take over t
Stepping in through bright yellow gates, I gape at how yellow everything is. We walk into the school building through glass double doors and causally I look around. Jay certainly wasn’t kidding about the eccentricity of the school. I thought as someone bumped into me. Stumbling forward I turn with a frown. “Hey!” I call out after him but he just keeps running without muttering an apology or even giving any acknowledgement. Grumbling, I didn’t expect the double doors to suddenly bust open and for students to flood inside. They all ran, not caring as they jostled me about until I was pushed back enough for all of them to rush upstairs freely. “What the hell is wrong with them!” I yell in disbelief, rubbing my arching arms while staring at their retreating backs with a perplexed frown. &l
She looks so hopeful while she asks this, and I feel bad immediately because there’s no way I’m doing this. The competition is most likely to guarantee attention from people and I want none of that, no amount of hopeful smiles are going to persuade me. “Look, Miss Kim-” “First place takes home a lot of money.” Okay, that part interests me. I hesitate, and upon seeing this she leans in to whisper. “I’m not obligated to tell you the amount but from what I heard it’s a hell of a lot for students.” I weigh my options in my head and decide to just f**k it. Money is a completely different issue. “Where did you say I have to sign up again?” A dazzling smile lit up her face and she picks up a form on her desk, I frowned in confusion when she insisted on filling it out for me while I tell her my details.
Grumbling beneath my breath, I move further into the classroom and the door bangs close behind me. Those sliders sure aren’t silent. Their attention was on me the minute they heard the door close, but I ignore my nerves as my eyes focus on the only empty seat to the left, by the window. Walking over, I settle my bag on the table and sit down. “Hi, I’m Sang Bora.” The girl in front of me introduces herself, and I raise my head with a smile. I admire her dyed blonde hair up in a French braid ponytail and caramel skin. “Hi.” “One question,” She holds up a finger. “Are you lost?” “I… highly doubt that.” I frown in confusion. “I’m new, the names Lana Kang.” “Any relation to Jayden Kang?” I look to the
Once we arrived at my father’s restaurant I smile at the sight of the restaurant’s name ‘KANG’S’, written in big golden letters in the middle of the building. Slipping into the restaurant after my brother who gentlemanly opens the door for me, I take in a deep breath. For some reason, I’m always floored by how many renovations my father has put into this place and how much it has grown. The restaurant is filled with loud chatter due to the number of people crowding the place and the waiters running around to attend to customers. I can still clearly remember what the place used to look like before I left, bleak walls with peeling wallpaper, barely functional ceiling lights, and an odd stale smell permeating the air. But it’s thanks to the help of a friend of my dad’s that I got my first job as a child m
I’ve been to a lot of malls back when I was in New York and I mean a lot, but some of them -in my opinion- can’t hold a candle to Dream-Mall. The building is built with metallic bars and crystal glasses to give the place optimal amounts of natural lights, the inside of the mall is large enough for a steady flow of foot traffic and the large banners hanging from the ceiling portray various adverts. Looking at the sea of faces crowding the mall my eyes move through every corner as much as they can and a part of me brightens at the thought of exploring more of it. Jayden and I climb onto the escalator when I suddenly remember something Bora had said back at school. “Hey Jay, they said they’re going to be waiting at Kai’s Cafe?” “That’s great,” He grins. “This is Dream-Mal
I’m so busy agonizing over what the hell I’m going to do when Bora jumps enthusiastically by my side, thereby nudging me forward with a stumble. “It’s our turn now!” She squeals, and I turn to her with an encouraging smile, the queasiness in my stomach easing a bit as I let myself be distracted. “Are you still nervous?” “Unfortunately, but, I’ve decided not to focus on that. Instead, I’ll think about how I plan on kicking it on stage with the guys.” “That’s the spirit.” I grin, and turn to the twins. “Good luck out there.” “Please, we don’t need luck.” Daejung grins confidently, he moves to stand between Bora and his brother, wrapping his arms around their shoulder.“Now come on, it's time to show everyone what we’ve got.” “Hell yeah!” Byung-Ho and Bora cheer simultaneously with raised fists before the three of them bounce on stage as soon as their names are called. I can’t help but laugh as I watch them disappear through the curtain, taking their places centre-s
My days seem to pass by within a blink of an eye as I now juggle school, my new friends, working at dad’s restaurant, and exploring as much of Seoul as I can.I want to get more acquainted with the streets so I don’t have to depend on Google or Jay to get around, I know it must be burdensome to always take me wherever it is I have to go. Anyways, it’s Friday which means it’s the day of the school's music competition. Everyone has been very enthusiastic about today and I think no matter how small competition is said to be here, there’s always a buzz in response. Not many people are performing but I do know that Bora, the twins, a couple of Jayden’s classmates, and someone from class 2-3 is taking part in this competition. For whatever reason Jayden’s been silent, occasionally giving me worried looks whenever I talk about how excited I am to participate in the competition. I’ve tried asking him what’s wrong but he doesn’t respond.Sometimes, I swear he’s about to tell me somethin
“Hey, I’m home!” I call into the living room as soon as I step in and pull off my coat, draping it over my hand I pull off my shoes and pick them up so am walking barefoot.“In the kitchen!” Jayden responds, and I head in that direction. Breathing in the familiar smell of brewing kimchi stew, I walk further to see my brother standing behind the kitchen counter with an apron wrapped around his waist.“Well, this is a familiar surprise.” I smile and fold my hands in front of my chest. “I thought you didn’t cook anymore.”Glancing at me briefly with a happy smile, he responds. “Just because cooking isn’t my first love anymore doesn’t mean I stopped dabbling now and then, anyways you’re back a lot later than I expected. Did you have fun with your new friends?” “Yup, after meeting them over at the caf
