Chapter 3

Penulis: Long Live Cats
Rather than a birthday banquet, it felt more like they were hosting another wedding reception.

From the moment Martha entered the venue arm in arm with Bosco, they became the center of attention.

Mom sat beside them, watching them with a face full of affection.

I spotted my closest colleague, Faith Bowen, in the crowd.

Out of habit, I raised my hand to wave at her—only to see her walk straight past me and embrace Martha instead.

"Babe!" she called warmly.

She used to call me that.

"Martha, did you see the news? The one your husband reported yesterday? I think it happened at our hospital!"

For the first time, I eagerly anticipated seeing a flicker of panic cross Martha's face.

But to my disappointment, she remained perfectly composed. "Hmm... I think so too."

Faith shook her head. "I wonder if this will hurt the hospital's reputation. Our last PR crisis was five years ago when Abigail abandoned her job and caused an uproar."

That was the first time I'd heard Faith speak of me with such disdain. It was a bitter departure from her usual staunch defense of me, standing by my side no matter what.

Martha took a slow sip of tea. "I'm sure Abigail had her reasons."

Faith slammed her hand on the table in fury. "Reasons? What excuse could she possibly have for cheating on Mr. Sharp and walking away from so many patients?"

Her outburst drew the attention of everyone around.

"So many people were left waiting. Some were in critical condition and nearly died because of the delays. Others suffered complications from postponed exams. Even Mr. Torres was so furious that he fell ill."

Bosco chimed in then. "Fortunately, we had Martha. Despite her injuries, she stepped up to help that person to complete the urgent work."

Hearing the way he referred to me—never even saying my name—sent a piercing ache through my chest.

Eugene Torres approached, patting Martha's back.

"Yes, even though it went against protocol, it was lucky you acted in time. And later, you even proved with your skills that I made the right decision in letting you take Abigail's place."

The surrounding colleagues burst into applause, heaping Martha with praise.

Even Mom stood up, lifting her glass in a toast.

"Even though they're twins, this daughter of mine is far better than the other. That one might as well be dead."

Upon hearing the contempt in Mom's voice, I felt my heart twist in unbearable pain.

"But Mom… I am dead. If you knew, would you mourn me?"

Martha's eyes flickered with satisfaction before she turned to Bosco with feigned curiosity.

"Honey, if Abigail died, would you be sad?"

"No."

His response was immediate—so swift it felt rehearsed, like he had practiced it a thousand times before.

"She is shameless… Even if that illegitimate child had been born, it should have been trampled to death. She betrayed her profession and ruined so many lives. She deserved to die under the knife—to be cut open and gutted like the disgrace she was!

"Her death would be a blessing to humanity."

I stared at Bosco, listening to him predict my manner of death, and in a daze, I recalled the despair and agony of that moment.

"But my child was not illegitimate. It was your child, Bosco!" I shouted.

Tears of blood slipped from my eyes as I let out a hollow, bitter laugh. "Bosco, congratulations. You finally got what you wanted."

The moment Eugene mentioned my name, his expression darkened. "I misjudged Abigail. If I had known, I never would have recommended her to join the hospital!"Faith chimed in, "Mr. Torres, you're not the only one who was fooled. I trusted her for years—turns out it was all an act!"I covered my mouth in disbelief.I had thought that no matter how much Martha deceived my family, my colleagues wouldn't erase my past achievements.I had believed they would at least trust my dedication to my profession. But after eight years of working together, it all crumbled under a few fabricated lies.Just then, Bosco's phone vibrated with a message.Someone had sent him a video.Concerned that it might upset his pregnant wife, he excused himself and stepped away.I followed him into the restroom. He tapped the voice message at the top of the screen."Mr. Sharp, the original surveillance footage was not very clear. Two hours later, Bosco arrived in Westin. But Mason was nowhere to be found. Once a promising talent, Mason had been forced back to his hometown by Martha. Depression had consumed him, and not long ago, he had passed away. His elderly mother, Ethel Hubbard, had found a USB drive hidden in his drawer. She had handed it over to a small local media station in Westin. They censored parts of the footage before releasing it, and then it spread across the internet."What about Abigail? Where is she?"Bosco gripped Ethel's shoulders tightly. But she only stared at him in confusion."Abigail? I've never heard of her. Mason came back from the city five years ago. He was always alone. How could there have been a woman with him?"Bosco let go, stepping back in disbelief."That's impossible. Abigail was pregnant with his child. She would have contacted him at least once! I need to find out the truth…"Pale-faced, Bosco returned to his car and sped toward the media station that had rece

Bosco sped down the highway, his grip tightening on the wheel as rain lashed against the windshield. At first, he sobbed uncontrollably. Then his cries turned into desperate shouts of my name. And then, suddenly, he stopped. His phone was ringing. It was Martha calling."Honey, I don't feel well… I think I might be having another miscarriage. But the banquet isn't over yet. Can you come back and stay with me?"Bosco took a deep breath, not responding immediately."Honey?" she called again, her voice tinged with concern. When he finally spoke, his voice was cold. "I'll take you to the hospital for a checkup when I return.""A checkup?" Martha stammered, her tone laced with panic. "I'll just adjust my herbal medicine… I'll be fine…""I want to find out why you haven't been able to conceive all these years."Before she could respond, he hung up.A cold indifference marked his words—he had never spoken to her like that before. I remembered the day I found out I was pregnant.

The moment Bosco returned to the banquet, Faith shoved him hard."Why are you only back when the event is nearly over? Where the hell did you go?"Mom rose from her seat, disappointment flickering in her eyes. Still, she tried to smooth things over. "Forget it."She clung tightly to Martha, who looked visibly distressed. Bosco met Martha's gaze, his eyes cold, burning with barely restrained fury. Sensing the tension, Martha averted her gaze, fear flashing across her face. This only made Faith angrier. "She wasn't feeling well earlier and called you, and you hung up on her? Do you even remember she's pregnant? Her emotions are fragile! You're her husband, for God's sake!"At the mention of Martha being pregnant, Bosco and I let out a cold chuckle.Martha, a woman who had committed such monstrous acts against another pregnant woman—what right did she have to demand sympathy for her own discomfort? She truly was a master manipulator, capable of twisting even the smallest grie

Mom was taken to the hospital.Martha remained frozen in place, clutching her face as if trying to hold herself together. She tried to argue, her voice frantic. "It wasn't me! That must be a deepfake video made by Abigail! She always hated me! She never wanted me to have a good life!"She lunged forward, grabbing Bosco's arm, her eyes pleading."Bosco, you can't erase all the love I've given you and all the suffering I've endured just because of one video!"Bosco didn't move. He didn't even flinch. Faith stepped forward, her expression conflicted as she looked at Martha. "Maybe we should try to find Abigail first… See if she's still alive."Martha whipped around and shouted, "Even you don't believe me?"Then, as if on cue, she doubled over, clutching her stomach as if she were in severe pain. But this time, no one rushed to comfort her.Eugene was still staring at the screen, lost in thought.A lifetime spent judging people—yet he had failed so utterly to see the truth abou

My soul drifted above, staring at the frozen video frame on the computer screen.I gazed at my own body lying lifeless on the bed, a deep wound carved into my abdomen. Blood had soaked through the white sheets, pooling onto the floor beside a blurred-out mass of flesh.Even my face had been blurred out too."Who could have been so ruthless? The victim had no strength to fight back—it's as if she was drugged," a colleague said regretfully to Bosco Sharp. "But this video was recorded five years ago. Does it still hold any news value?"Bosco sat down and said, "No matter how much time has passed, we must always speak up for the weak.
