Ophelia
I looked at the caller ID and it was Dave.
“I know it is you, Dave,” I said.
“Well, you answered like you didn't know who I was, so I thought I would give you a little scare” he chuckled
“Sorry, I didn't check my phone before picking up the call,” I apologized and rubbed my forehead, trying to ease the ache.
“Are you alright? Is he treating you well?” he asked, sounding concerned.
“I am alright. The media is just making a fuss about my marriage with Ryder,” I replied.
“Hope they are not causing any harm to you. How is Ryder handling the situation? If things are getting out of hand, I have a friend that works over there at the major media house, I can ask for his help”
My heart flustered. His genuine concern brought a tightness to my throat, and I felt tears prickling. Dave and Lily were the only people who didn't judge me for who I was.
Or maybe it’s just because they never knew Olivia. I pushed the thought aside and answered him.
“There is nothing to worry about. I am safe. How is Lily?” I asked, changing the topic.
“She has been acting off lately” he sighed, frustration lacing in his voice.
“Did you two have a fight?” I teased. Knowing them, it is usually one of their little spats and they always find their way back to each other and come back together.
“No, It is different this time. She has been acting weird and distant. She asked for some time apart and it is killing me” he said quietly
“Well, I know the two of you love each other, so give her time; she will come around,” I assured him.
Back in London, I had dreamed of a relationship like theirs, except for their quarrels and arguments. I preferred the loving parts and not the endless back and forth.
“I hope you’re right,” he said, then added, “Actually… I could use your help.” He said and it piqued my interest.
“With what?”
“With Lily.” His request only fueled my curiosity.

Ryder has been avoiding me since what happened in the grocery store happened. He worked from home now and always had Ryan with him. He even hired a nanny and chef to help with Ryan.
Even though I think his behaviors are irrational, I miss Ryan so much. He has become a big part of my life. Not seeing him, holding him, and kissing him was affecting me very badly.
Distracted while cooking, I accidentally sliced my finger with the knife. Trying to stop blood from gushing out, my food burnt in the process. In short, everything felt off without him here.
I wrapped my finger in a napkin, pressing it tightly to stop the bleeding. As I tried to salvage what was left of the burnt food, my phone chimed with a message. It was from Dave.
“Hey, I have a plan to get Lily back. I will call you later. I have an errand to run.”
I managed a small smile. Dave has been persistent, looking for a way to fix things with Lily. It only made me more happy for Lily. She has a man who is ready to make things work between them. If only I had that same confidence when it came to my own life here.
The silence in the house was getting heavier as the days wore on. Without Ryan's smile and laughter that always lightens up my day or his little footsteps echoing through the halls when he is running from me or his food, everywhere just feels shallow.
The cook and the nanny come in every day. While the cook comes in to cook, the nanny stays with Ryan while Ryder works. Ryder's coldness, his distance, and now, the absence of Ryan, every one of these things was weighing down on me in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
If he was trying to punish me then he is doing a great job because I might lose my mind soon.
After dinner, I went to Ryder's door, hoping to ask questions about the reasons why he was treating me so badly. I knocked on the door and waited for him to open the door.
While waiting, I went through all that I was going to ask once he opened the doorin my head. I just needed to see Ryan. Not seeing Ryan could make me lose my mind.
The door opened and my eyes met Ryder's beautiful blue eyes.
Beautiful really? Focus Ophelia. I kicked myself mentally.
“What do you need?” He asked, his expression was tired. His hair was very messy like he ran his hands through them multiple times. His shirt 2 buttons were opened, making me catch a glimpse of his chest.
“What is it, Ophelia?” he growled slowly.
All the speeches I practiced in my head went blank instantly.
“Erm–” I searched for words.
He was already closing the door when I held the door. “Pls let me see Ryan” I pleaded.
“He is sleeping,” he said and wanted to close the door again.
“Please Ryder, let me see him. You have punished me enough, just let me see him for a few minutes” I didn't know when tears started rolling down my eyes.
“I will bring him to you tomorrow. Goodnight” he said and shut the door on me.
I couldn't help the tears that kept falling from my eyes. I was tired, tired of everything. When did I become like this, begging just to see my son?
“Ryan is mine and Olivia’s son.” The memory of his words echoed in my head, reminding me of my place in Ryan and Ryder's life.
I had thought that maybe, Ryder might start to see me more than a stranger in his home and life. It is clear where I stand now.
Feeling numb and tired, I just wanted to hit my bed and for the day to end.
As I lay down in bed, I realized that no matter how I try, I can't get through the walls around his his heart
OpheliaThe next morning, I woke up to a full ache in my chest and a banging headache. Dragging myself out of the bed, I went straight to the bathroom and stood In front of the mirror, staring at my reflection. My eyes were swollen from crying, and my skin looked pale against the morning light filtering through the curtains.I immediately brushed my teeth and took my bath. Throwing on sweatpants and a tank top, I tied my hair into a loose bun and headed to the kitchen. If nothing else, I could at least prepare breakfast and distract myself from everything going on with me.“Mama” Ryan's voice took my attention as I lazily walked into the kitchen. I halted and turned, he was running towards me. “Ryan!” I exclaimed, my heart swelling as I rushed toward him. He giggled, his little arms reaching for me. I scooped him up, holding him tightly as tears streamed down my face, I couldn't control them. “Oh, I missed you so much, baby,” I whispered, kissing his chubby cheeks. I kissed him a
Ryder Sitting down in the boardroom filled with hums of low conversations and papers shuffling, my mind was not present.I sat at the head of the long table, staring at my presentation on my laptop but all I could see was Ophelia's tear-streaked face. Her words kept playing in my head, unable to believe some of what she said. She has never raised her voice when speaking to anyone, but today I saw another side of her. And that side stirred up something deep inside me.Damn it.I gripped the edge of the table until my knuckles turned white. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I wasn’t supposed to be affected by her.“Mr. Smith,” someone called, pulling me out of my thoughts.“Yes?” My voice was sharp, and I didn’t miss the slight flinch from the junior associate speaking to me.“We are waiting for your input on the merger strategy,” he said with a slight bow.I nodded curtly, forcing my attention to the screen of my laptop. I wasn't following the meeting but I had the report with me. Skim
Ryder“What were you saying?” I asked.“I called you yesterday but the call wasn't getting through. I hope you don't mind Dave staying here” she said. “You should have told me before bringing a stranger into the house” her brown etched in a frown at what I said.“Dave is not a stranger, and this is my house as much as it is yours; I can entertain anyone I want to,” she said all in one breath, her tone sharp.I raised a brow, studying her and she looked down. “I want to finish up the cooking,” she said dismissively and turned away from me before I could respond. She was behaving differently, like she was on the edge. She was not meeting my eyes, nor was she attempting to make conversation with me like she usually does.At least she isn't in my space. Instead of feeling that relief, I felt something different and it gnawed at Me. Shaking off the thought, I went to my room to freshen up. My eyes were heavy, so I decided to sleep for a few minutes but I eventually slept for hours. I put
Ophelia “I brought out the leftover spaghetti I made in the morning and took my phone. 15 missed calls from my sister. Instead of returning the call, I walked to the kitchen and grabbed out the leftover spaghetti. I must have put my phone on silent during work. The day has been a blur with me rushing out the door in the morning, getting caught in the rain and accepting a ride from a colleague. But now back in my apartment, the missed calls lingered in my mind. After a deep breath, I finally called her back and she picked on the first ring.“Olivia, you called me 15 times” I took out a fork, “I said I'm not coming home to the anniversary”“Ophelia it's me, Ryder” The fork with spaghetti hung in the air. The voice brought back some memories and I gulped hard. “Why are you with Olivia's phone?” I asked him. He was the very last person I wanted to talk with.“Olivia is dead and-” The phone fell from my hand and I quickly took it but it was off.My hands were shaking as I tried turning
Ophelia A year laterI looked at the empty room and sighed. Getting married to my sister's husband wasn't my idea rather was it a good decision. I went to the bathroom to change from my wedding dress and wore my pajamas. I sat down in front of the dresser removing all the pins in my hair and washing off my makeup. My mind wandered off to a month before my wedding.******I was called by my mum to come to New York immediately and I took an early leave from work.On getting there, there was a meeting between Ryder's family and my family. I was surprised I was called for the meeting because of my last encounter with Ryder.“I don't know why you all are here,” Ryder said with exhaustion showing on his face and I felt pity for him.“You are killing yourself dear, you need help,” Ryder’s mother, Sandra, said beside him.“I can handle everything, Mum, Things have just been hard recently” Ryder explained. “You can take a break off work, son, have time for your son and yourself,” Ryder's fa
Ophelia I placed my hands on my chest. That scared me.I opened the door and found Ryder standing outside the door, still dressed in his suit from the wedding. His eyes briefly met mine before dropping to the pajamas I was wearing.“Why are you still up? Do you need something?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. His gaze lingered on my clothes, and I could see a flicker of something in his eyes—anger, or perhaps pain. “Why are you wearing Olivia's clothes?” he asked, his voice cold.“I am not wearing her clothes” I denied immediately, feeling a lump form in my throat. His expression hardened. “First, you took her family, and now you’re taking her clothes?” The accusation stung, and I felt tears welling up.“They are mine” I snapped, raising my voice as I met his gaze. For a moment, his eyes left the cloth, locking into mine, and I saw confusion and anger in them. “Olivia's are still in your wardrobe,” I explained to him. Before he could say anything else, I shut the door, leani
Ophelia Ryder’s last words from Mum’s office echoed through my mind as I strolled to the kitchen to make Ryan's food. “No, Olivia didn't die in an accident.” What does that even mean? “She was killed.” The phrase stuck with me, swirling in confusion. Both Mum and Ryder had always insisted she was hospitalized, fighting to survive. So how had she died? And why would anyone want her dead?Who could possibly want Olivia dead? She was loved by everyone. She was everyone's favorite. As the thoughts spiraled, my head started to ache. A sudden dizziness hit me and I reached to steady myself, accidentally knocking over the kettle of hot water.“Ouch!” I screamed in pain as the hot water splashed down my waist. Fighting back tears, I dashed to the bathroom and went under the shower without taking off my clothesI sighed in relief as the running water managed to ease the burn. The relief was instant, but the ache lingered. Consumed by my thoughts, I barely noticed my hand grazing the kettle
OpheliaA knock sounded on the door, making me wake up in fright. Ryan's cry reached my ear as I stood up to open the door. Why was he crying? Was he hurt? Or did he fall? With multiple questions in my mind, I opened the door.Ryder stood in front of my door with a crying Ryan in his arms. “What happened to him?” I asked as I collected Ryan from Ryder. “He woke up crying” he simply said.As if hearing my voice, Ryan's cries reduced and started having little hiccups. “Why were you crying my champ?” I asked as I carried him with me inside the room and Ryder followed. The room seems smaller with him inside. His eyes roamed his eyes around the room before settling back on me.I ignored him and gave my attention to Ryan. I checked him but there was nothing wrong with him. What could have made him cry?Still trying to find out the cause of the cry, Ryan started pulling on his clothes. It finally dawned on me. He wasn't comfortable in his clothes.I took off his clothes and went to the bathr
