Charlene Maximus POV
We arrived at the gala thirty minutes after we left the house. It was suffocating to sit with Dominic and his daughter. They both glared at me all through the ride, and his daughter complained about how she hated the ride every few seconds.
"Are we not there yet?" She whined.
"We'll be there soon," Dominic said every time his daughter asked the question. I ignored them and lowered my head onto the car seat and closed my eyes.
When we arrived there, Dominic nudged me on the shoulder, announcing that we'd arrived. Normal husbands kiss their wives to wake them up, but that was not the case with Dominic. He had always been rude and treated me like I meant nothing.
"Right," I said as I came out of the limousine.
"Behave tonight," Dominic whispered into my ears. His breath fanned my neck, causing my body to shiver. He wrapped his hand around my waist and pulled me closer to him. "You look lovely tonight," he said as he kissed me on the cheek and we both walked towards the hall. He held his daughter's hand, and we both walked together as if we were a happy family.
No way! We were not. It's all for a show.
Reporters rushed towards us to question us, and cameras flashed at us. That was the life of a popular billionaire who acted like he was the best husband to me only in front of people.
After taking a few pictures on the red carpet, we walked into the hall. The hall was beautifully decorated in red and white, with beautiful white lighting that brightened up the entire hall. The hall was large enough to accommodate five hundred people, and it was one of the most popular halls in Mecianda. The Hall of Faith
Caroline, dressed in a beautiful blue dress that glittered like gold, stood at the entrance and walked towards us as soon as she saw us walk into the hall. "Son," she shouted and rushed to hug Dominic. "I'm so glad you could make it."
Caroline Maximus, A powerful woman who controlled the best ballet school in Mecianda. The woman hated me just like the rest of the family and wanted to get rid of me years back before Dominic and I got married.
"Zenobia!" She greeted her granddaughter and hugged her.
"Hello, Caroline!" I greeted her when we made eye contact. Her green eyes glared at me with a disdainful look.
"You are here!" she clicked her tongue and turned to look at her son. "Why did you invite her here? She doesn't deserve to be here! " Caroline said to Dominic, but he stopped her from talking when a couple walked past us.
"Let's not discuss it here, mother. Everyone is watching us," Dominic said, looking around. He reminded her of the media and how quickly they spread rumors.
That was all he cared about. His family's reputation He doesn't care if his mother's words hurt me because I meant nothing to him.
Caroline forced a smile on his face and beckoned for one of the ushers to lead us to our chairs. As we walked towards our seats, she stopped me.
"What's wrong, mother?" Dominic asked her.
"Just a few seconds, son," Caroline told him, but Dominic didn't believe her. He walked back to where I stood and grabbed my hand. "Don't worry, son; I'm not going to do anything that will put any of us in the news," she assured him.
Dominic nodded in response and kissed me on the cheek before walking away with his daughter, leaving me alone with Caroline. "Didn't I warn you to stay away from my son?" She grabbed my left hand and pinched it.
I winced in pain but managed to smile. I said, "He is married to me, Caroline, and he doesn't want to let go of me yet." I yanked her hand off of me and moved closer to her. "You must be mad that he is still with me after what you did to get us separated!" I chuckled and tutted, then I turned to walk away toward Dominic, who had his eyes on me.
I took a seat beside him and smiled at him. "What did you two discuss?" He asked.
Just as I was about to answer him, Caroline walked to the stage and everyone applauded her.
Except me. I folded my hands together and stared at her, waiting for what she had to say.
"Welcome to the 30th gala of Max School of Dance. I'm Caroline Maximus, the head of the school, and I'm happy that you're all here tonight," she said, and everyone clapped. "Before we start tonight, may I present to you the star of the show and the best ballet dancer in Mecianda. Alexa Brown!" She announced it and walked off the stage.
The whole hall went dark, but I didn't care about that. The name I heard caused my heart to stop for a second. I hadn't heard the name in years, and it came as a surprise to me when I heard Caroline mention the name. Alexa was my best friend in the past, and she abandoned me when I got involved in an accident five years ago. Hearing her name made me remember the past. My body shook terribly, and I suddenly felt hot even with the air conditioner on.
I played with my fingers and closed my eyes. The images of the headlight flashed into my eyes as I reminisced. The light came back on and shone in my closed eyes, but I didn't open them until Dominic touched me.
"Are you okay?" He asked and touched my shoulder.
I jumped in fright and opened my eyes. I looked toward him and nodded in response. "I'm fine," I said to him.
He replied, "Good," and smiled at me. "I need you to see the best dancer in the world," he exclaimed and placed a hand on my lap. "It's so sad that you can't dance right now," he said and burst into laughter. "Sad to see you miserable!" Dominic smiled and pointed towards the stage.
I turned my head toward the stage and saw my friend Alexa, who looked like a different person.
Popularity does change someone, I thought.
The music started as the ballerinas joined Alexa on stage. I looked through them and smiled when my eyes landed on Ryan. He was part of the backup dancers. They were both together and didn't show up when I was arrested. Tears welled up in my eyes when they started dancing. I blinked the tears away and pinched my hand to stop myself from thinking about the past. If only that accident hadn't happened, then I would have become the popular dancer in Mecianda because I was better than Alexa.
"You must feel sad to see your dreams up there," Dominic teased me yet again. "You must also feel sad that your legs can't move to the rhythm again!" He scoffed and stood up to applaud the ballerinas as they finished their dance. "It feels good to see you miserable, Charlene," he said quietly as he continued to clap.
He was right about me being miserable. I hated myself for not being able to dance, and I hated myself for killing those two people that night. I lowered my head and let a lone tear escape my eye.
If only I could wish for one thing. I'll wish to go back to that night five years ago when it happened and stop everything that has happened.
Charlene Maximus It all started Five years ago, it was the night when my career was about to bloom and it was the night of my doom. That night was what started my suffering. My name is Charlene king, A twenty-seven years old ballet dancer. Five years ago, I had everything, money, fame, and happiness but it all got destroyed on a particular night. It was the last time I ever felt happiness. It was the night of the celebration of my debut, and my best friends Alexa and Ryan, and I went to Moon. It was the latest Club in the country and It was specially made for celebrities like me. We walked into the clubhouse and got into the VIP room. "We are going to have so much fun!"Alexa nudged me on the shoulder as we took our seats. Alexa is a black woman and just like me she was a ballet dancer but she had no popularity and was one of my backup dancers. Alexa and I have been friends since we were five years old. Then, we used to dance around and while we were growing up, our parents took us
Charlene Maximus POV present. "She is amazing," Dominic commented as Alexa finished dancing, and Zenobia who barely said anything to me clapped and cheered for Alexa. "Yes, dad, she is amazing," Zenobia cheered and turned to face me. "I wish I could be like her in the nearest future," she said. Why did she look at me? I could not understand why she turned to face me as spoke about Alexa. Was she trying to mock me just like her father? " I wish to be famous like her," she smirked at me and I knew that she was referring to me. Mocking me in her possible way. Like father, like daughter. "Here she comes," Dominic announced and I quickly turned to see who he was talking about. My heart raced and quickens as Alexa walked towards our table with Caroline. I played with my fingers under the table and tried not to show how shaky I was becoming. Alexa and I haven't seen each other in five years and knowing that I was going to see her again, I didn't know how our reunion was going to be.
Charlene Maximus POV ‘’Edward Adams,’’ when his voice sounded behind me, I knew that I was in trouble. Dominic’s voice was deeper and sounded like a warning when he mentioned Edwards's name. ‘’Dominic Maximus,’’ Edward lets go of my hand and turned to face my husband. ‘’I never expected that I would run into you at this event. What a pleasant surprise seeing you,’’ the way Edward replied made it sound as if they knew each other in the past. They both acted like they were showing off to each other. Dominic laughed at Edwards's reply while the latter joined him in laughing. ‘’what do you expect Edward?’’ Dominic asked and moved closer to me. ‘’Caroline is my mother and I am one of the major sponsors for tonight so I should be here but I can’t say the same about you,’’ he said and looked at me. I couldn’t figure out his look but deep down, I knew that he wanted to strangle right there. If he had the chance. ‘’Caroline must have left out the important part about why I am here,’’ the t
Charlene Maximus POV According to Mignon McLaughlin, a successful marriage requires falling in love multiple times, always with the same person. However, this does not apply to me because I have done everything in my power to ensure the success of my marriage. I had done everything that could change Dominic's opinion of me, but none of my efforts were successful. He still sees me as the same person. I did not understand why he was behaving in such a manner toward me. I was at a loss to understand what I had done wrong to earn such venomous hatred from him. Why is it exactly that? I questioned myself daily with this inquiry, but regardless of the number of times I did so, I was unable to find an answer to it. "Go to your room," Dominic commanded Zenobia as soon as we stepped inside the house door. Zenobia gave me an accusatory glare and jerked her index finger in my direction. "This is all your fault," she yelled after me before running off to her room, leaving her father and me
Dominic Maximus How do you describe a villain? He tries to destroy the hero in a book or movie. I am far from that, and I am neither a villain nor I’m a hero. I had a perfect life five years ago where I had the most beautiful family. My wife, Mary, was a beautiful woman and the best mother to our daughter Zenobia and two-year-old son alexander. But someone’s carefree attitude and foolishness took them away from me. ‘’I am so sorry Dominic, mary, and alexander didn’t make it,’’ when the doctor announced that to me, I thought my life was going to end. How could they have died so quickly when I saw their faces that morning? My ex-wife Mary had the brightest smile when she hugged and kissed me, promising to return early since that day was our tenth anniversary. I can never forget what happened that day. It still felt like a dream to me, but in reality, they were gone. That day was like every other day, and if I had known, I would have driven them myself. Maybe I should have
Charlene POV. I grunted as I turned around; I did. I opened my eyes immediately, and I paused. I exhaled and groaned again. It wasn't a bright day for me, or was it night? I couldn't tell. I finally opened my eyes, and I wasn't in the dark, dark room. I turned around and looked all over me. "Am I dreaming?" I question, I question internally. I was on the bed; I wasn't on the floor anymore. I tried to lift myself, but I couldn't. Regardless I wondered how I got here and why I was here; it's not like I didn't want to be. But the questions increased a lot; they were to the brim. I felt different like I was taken care of; someone had taken the time to take care of me. I felt scrubbed and washed. I sighed, and I waited for someone to come in, at least. The room was bright and white; the sunlight was at its peak, and it lay perfectly on the bed of flowers by the window. It seemed like a room made for a female, and I wasn't surprised. The bed was soft and silky, and the pillows felt like
Chapter 10. Dominic Maximus POV The next morning, I left to woke up late and slept a little late, too. I didn't check up on Charlene, or Zenobia as I had a business meeting. Work as usual. When. I reached I called my staffs in charge of the presentation as I sat down and listened to the presentation, but I wasn't focused. I tapped my pen against the table countless times, hoping it would make me focus on the presentations, but it didn't. My mind was clouded and distracted with thoughts of Charlene. What the hell is going on with me? I am supposed to hate her, not like her. "Sir, do you like this?" One of my workers asked, and I knew I couldn't lie. "Please do it all over, as I missed the whole point, " I said again, and this time, I tried my best to pay attention and make it work, but it was hopeless. All I saw was Charlene. I groaned, and I palmed my face. "Is anything wrong, sir?" Another worker asked, and I shook my head. I wonder if they thought I was reacting to the pres
Charlene Maximus POVI woke up without a sore throat and heavy head, and I wasn't as weak or tired. The migraine stopped, and everything was clear. But at that moment, I could only think about Maximus and all he had done. I didn't expect that he would care for me or even watch me now and then. He would even refill the water and check the air con. In just two days, I felt loved and cared for. Even if he did them behind my back, he still managed regardless. I could finally stand up, and my strength was to the brim. I had fully recovered. My feet didn't ache, nor did my knees. I could finally stretch without groaning. The thought that I didn't have to worry if I couldn't move didn't bother me anymore. I drank to the last drop, and I sat up. I gasped and sighed. The curtains were already opened, I checked the clock on the shelf beside me, and it was past five in the evening. I needed to get out of bed and walk. I felt my legs had forgotten how to walk. I scoffed, and I stood up, my face
