Charlene Maximus POV
‘’Edward Adams,’’ when his voice sounded behind me, I knew that I was in trouble. Dominic’s voice was deeper and sounded like a warning when he mentioned Edwards's name.
‘’Dominic Maximus,’’ Edward lets go of my hand and turned to face my husband. ‘’I never expected that I would run into you at this event. What a pleasant surprise seeing you,’’ the way Edward replied made it sound as if they knew each other in the past.
They both acted like they were showing off to each other. Dominic laughed at Edwards's reply while the latter joined him in laughing. ‘’what do you expect Edward?’’ Dominic asked and moved closer to me. ‘’Caroline is my mother and I am one of the major sponsors for tonight so I should be here but I can’t say the same about you,’’ he said and looked at me. I couldn’t figure out his look but deep down, I knew that he wanted to strangle right there.
If he had the chance.
‘’Caroline must have left out the important part about why I am here,’’ the tension between them grew as Edward moved closer to Dominic. ‘’maybe your mother didn’t inform you but I am also a part of the sponsor. I know you are sad to see me but….’’
‘’now that you know, you should be on your way as I must speak to my wife,’’ Dominic raised the corner of his lips mischievously at Edward and placed his hands around my waist. ‘’I must dance now with my wife,’’ he pulled me tighter into his arms choking the life out of my stomach with his hands. I couldn’t complain because it would make things worse. I could only smile as I always do.
Smiling as if everything was okay whereas, I was suffering silently.
‘’Then I must take my leave,’’ Edward grinned at him and turned to leave but he suddenly stopped as if he remembered something.
I bite my lower lips and wondered what he had to say for stopping and not moving forward. Deep inside of me, I hoped that he wouldn’t say something that would anger Dominic. I gently rubbed my hands together and lowered my head praying that he would just walk away without causing trouble.
‘’your wife is so pretty that every man in this room will think that she is single,’’ Edward pointed around. ‘’if I were you,’’ Edward smirked at Dominic before he continued speaking. ‘’I’ll make sure that I watch my wife all the time because you never know who might be watching,’’ he chuckled and gave a salute. ‘’I will see you around dear Charlene,’’ he smiled at me and walked away.
Dominic let go of my waist and grabbed my hand. ‘’let’s dance dear wife,’’ he muttered into my ears causing me to shake terribly in fear. ‘’you look beautiful tonight,’’ he commented sounding weird. It was unlike anything he would ever say.
‘’it's not what you think,’’ I tried to explain what had happened with Edward and myself but instead, he shushed me by placing a finger on my lips.
Dominic grabbed the back of my head and whispered into my ear. ‘’ whore,’’ he chuckled and kissed me on the lips before facing me.
I visibly gulped as I tried hard not to look at him, and he forcefully raised my head. ‘’you were not looking down when Edward was standing in front of you but now, you shy away from your husband,’’ he chuckled and heaved a sigh. ‘’I am burning with anger just by looking at you,’’ he said through gritted and grabbed my hand pulling me behind him as he led me to our table.
‘’I…….’’ I tried to speak but scratched my wrist with his nails and I stopped talking at once to avoid my wrist getting bruised.
Luckily for me, Alexa was no longer on the table but Zenobia and Caroline were both seated at the table chatting happily. ‘’ mother, we are leaving,’’ Dominic announced as we reached the table. I raised my head to face him wondering why he was leaving so soon and no one needed to tell me that it was all about what happened with Edward.
‘’why are you leaving so soon?’’ his mother asked and looked toward me. ‘’ did she cause another problem again?’’
‘’I have a bit of a situation to deal with,’’ Dominic replied with that instead.
‘’And you are sure that it doesn’t have to do with her,’’ Caroline pointed towards me with a hint of disgust in her tone. She frowned at me and folded her arms. ‘’I must say that you made a mistake in marrying someone as despicable as her.’’
Dominic hugged his mother and kissed her on the forehead. ‘’it is not her fault. I just have issues to sort,’’ he lied and it made me wonder why he had to pretend in front of his mother when everyone in his family hated me.
‘’But dad, I still want to see Alexa dance,’’ his daughter, Zenobia complained and cast a glare at me. ‘’This is all your fault,’’ she accused.
I lowered my head unable to face her because I felt defeated. She hated me so much and now that I was about to make her miss the performance of her favorite ballet dancer, Zenobia was going to bear me in hell.
‘’Don’t say things like that in public,’’ her father warned her and he was only doing that to protect his image. The world was going to question him if they find out that the popular business mogul Dominic Maximus had problems with his wife. Like Dominic always said, knowing about that was going to tarnish his image.
Zenobia stood up angrily from her chair and walked away without saying goodbye to Caroline. She was just like her father, short-tempered and rude.
‘’As always,’’ Caroline commented. ‘’you are great at causing trouble,’’ she frowned at me.
‘’I….’’
‘’I don’t want to hear any words from you Charlene. Just leave with your bad luck…. stated angrily waving me off with her hand.
‘’Goodnight mother,’’ Dominic said and walked away pulling me behind him until we reached outside the halls. He shoved me into our ride and I almost fell to the ground but luckily for me, I leaned on the window for support and was able to walk to the car seat. I sat down beside Zenobia but she shifted away from me as if I was cursed.
‘’This is your fault!’’ Zenobia accused. ‘’you shouldn’t have come to our family! You are a curse!’’
‘’That is enough Zenobia’’ her father scolded her and sat beside me. ‘’that is no way to speak to your mother.’’
‘’no,’’ Zenobia shouted at her father. ‘’she is not my mother because she is a….’’
‘’Enough!’’ Dominic shut her up. ‘’not another word from you again. I don’t want you ever raising your voice at me again,’’ he warned her and removed his suit. He yanked his tie from his neck showing his frustration and finally turned to face me.
‘’Tonight, is going to be long char,’’ he chuckled and pointed a finger at me. ‘’you my dear wife are going to enjoy every bit of it,’’ he laughed wickedly scheming a lot of things in his head.
All I know was that I was done for and Dominic was going to torture me all through the night with his words and just like before, I hoped that I survived it.
thank you for reading.
Charlene Maximus POV According to Mignon McLaughlin, a successful marriage requires falling in love multiple times, always with the same person. However, this does not apply to me because I have done everything in my power to ensure the success of my marriage. I had done everything that could change Dominic's opinion of me, but none of my efforts were successful. He still sees me as the same person. I did not understand why he was behaving in such a manner toward me. I was at a loss to understand what I had done wrong to earn such venomous hatred from him. Why is it exactly that? I questioned myself daily with this inquiry, but regardless of the number of times I did so, I was unable to find an answer to it. "Go to your room," Dominic commanded Zenobia as soon as we stepped inside the house door. Zenobia gave me an accusatory glare and jerked her index finger in my direction. "This is all your fault," she yelled after me before running off to her room, leaving her father and me
Dominic Maximus How do you describe a villain? He tries to destroy the hero in a book or movie. I am far from that, and I am neither a villain nor I’m a hero. I had a perfect life five years ago where I had the most beautiful family. My wife, Mary, was a beautiful woman and the best mother to our daughter Zenobia and two-year-old son alexander. But someone’s carefree attitude and foolishness took them away from me. ‘’I am so sorry Dominic, mary, and alexander didn’t make it,’’ when the doctor announced that to me, I thought my life was going to end. How could they have died so quickly when I saw their faces that morning? My ex-wife Mary had the brightest smile when she hugged and kissed me, promising to return early since that day was our tenth anniversary. I can never forget what happened that day. It still felt like a dream to me, but in reality, they were gone. That day was like every other day, and if I had known, I would have driven them myself. Maybe I should have
Charlene POV. I grunted as I turned around; I did. I opened my eyes immediately, and I paused. I exhaled and groaned again. It wasn't a bright day for me, or was it night? I couldn't tell. I finally opened my eyes, and I wasn't in the dark, dark room. I turned around and looked all over me. "Am I dreaming?" I question, I question internally. I was on the bed; I wasn't on the floor anymore. I tried to lift myself, but I couldn't. Regardless I wondered how I got here and why I was here; it's not like I didn't want to be. But the questions increased a lot; they were to the brim. I felt different like I was taken care of; someone had taken the time to take care of me. I felt scrubbed and washed. I sighed, and I waited for someone to come in, at least. The room was bright and white; the sunlight was at its peak, and it lay perfectly on the bed of flowers by the window. It seemed like a room made for a female, and I wasn't surprised. The bed was soft and silky, and the pillows felt like
Chapter 10. Dominic Maximus POV The next morning, I left to woke up late and slept a little late, too. I didn't check up on Charlene, or Zenobia as I had a business meeting. Work as usual. When. I reached I called my staffs in charge of the presentation as I sat down and listened to the presentation, but I wasn't focused. I tapped my pen against the table countless times, hoping it would make me focus on the presentations, but it didn't. My mind was clouded and distracted with thoughts of Charlene. What the hell is going on with me? I am supposed to hate her, not like her. "Sir, do you like this?" One of my workers asked, and I knew I couldn't lie. "Please do it all over, as I missed the whole point, " I said again, and this time, I tried my best to pay attention and make it work, but it was hopeless. All I saw was Charlene. I groaned, and I palmed my face. "Is anything wrong, sir?" Another worker asked, and I shook my head. I wonder if they thought I was reacting to the pres
Charlene Maximus POVI woke up without a sore throat and heavy head, and I wasn't as weak or tired. The migraine stopped, and everything was clear. But at that moment, I could only think about Maximus and all he had done. I didn't expect that he would care for me or even watch me now and then. He would even refill the water and check the air con. In just two days, I felt loved and cared for. Even if he did them behind my back, he still managed regardless. I could finally stand up, and my strength was to the brim. I had fully recovered. My feet didn't ache, nor did my knees. I could finally stretch without groaning. The thought that I didn't have to worry if I couldn't move didn't bother me anymore. I drank to the last drop, and I sat up. I gasped and sighed. The curtains were already opened, I checked the clock on the shelf beside me, and it was past five in the evening. I needed to get out of bed and walk. I felt my legs had forgotten how to walk. I scoffed, and I stood up, my face
The invitation is in Chapter 12.Dominic's point of viewWhen I arrived at my room, my wrath was still there, so I slammed the door shut. "Bullocks!" I said out loud, I don't know why I was upset, but Charlene was wrong for what she did. Why would she prepare food for me? There was nothing wrong with her cooking for me, but she should not have attempted it.I paced around my room, turning on the lights, with interest in my head. I yanked my tie off violently and tossed it on the bed. I had a long day at work and just wanted to enjoy my dinner without spoiling it. I rolled my eyes and palmed my face and removed my shirt, and walked to the restroom. I needed to take a break. Maybe a shower would help. There was simply no cause for me to be so upset with her. But I was. The supper was tasty and pleasant, and to be honest, I wished for more and to eat the rest of the meal, but I couldn't. I lost all hunger as soon as I heard her name. Even though I had only been caring for her for a fe
Charlene Maximus POV. It was a Saturday morning, and Dominic had already gotten out of bed. I groaned and turned around; we didn't dispute or remain silent the entire time. He shifted to his usual mood again, as if he was bipolar. I hoped that, at the very least, he'd be home and we could talk, but ever since I was sick, I hadn't seen my phone in a long time. "I should look for it today," I remarked quietly as I stood up and stretched. I sniffed and smelled myself, and my eyes widened when I realized I hadn't taken my bath yet. I went straight to the bathroom and took a bath. As the water cascaded down my body, I thought about my schedule for the rest of the day, and apart from the search for my phone, I had nothing planned for today except a short walk and a chat with Miss. Donna. I took a long shower, cleaned and washed every part of myself, and once I was done, I chose a yellow floral free gown that I would wear today; it was a wrap gown. It was my favorite, and because I'd
Dominic POV"I will be right back; I need to get something." I lied to my mother and Zenobia as I headed toward the side of the room where Charlene and Alexa had disappeared. When Alexa stood up to leave, I knew something was up, so I had to follow her. It was my opportunity to tell if the Alexa that Paul mentioned a few days back was the same as the one in my home. I stood up, and instead, I went to the bathroom; I needed to confirm if Alexa followed Charlene. I had watched her for a while now. I was suspicious, and I needed to be sure. I stood by the door and listened to both of them. I couldn't understand what they meant, but one thing was for sure they knew each other for sure. I heard all they said, the pain that Charlene had in her voice was heartbreaking. What did she mean by Charlene not ruining what she had built? I stood, and I listened some more. I was sure that something was up. Alexa watched Charlene as she cried and had her cornered in the wall. She was saying some
