I couldn't help but feel a sense of betrayal and hurt at my brother's behavior. I had always hoped that he would come around and try to make amends for what happened in the past, but seeing him act like I didn't exist just shattered any hope I had left.

Dominic must have sensed my distress because he reached out and took my hand in his, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Are you okay?" he asked softly.

I took a deep breath and forced a smile, not wanting to spoil the nice evening we were having. "Yeah, I'm fine," I said, but I knew he could see right through me.

Zenobia, on the other hand, seemed oblivious to the tension at the table. She chattered on happily, telling us about her day at school and all the things she had learned. It was a welcome distraction, and I found myself smiling genuinely at her stories.
