Chapter 3

Autor: Gu Lingfei
“I will, Nana,” Serenity casually responded.

Although Grandma May was nice to her, Zachary was her blood relative while Serenity was only related to the family by marriage. Serenity found it hard to believe that the Yorks would stand by Serenity during a conflict between her and Zachary.

Such was the case with her sister’s parents-in-law.

Before marriage, the in-laws were nothing but good to Liberty to the point their birth daughter was jealous.

It was a different story after the wedding. Every time Liberty got into a disagreement with her husband, Hank, her mother-in-law would get on Liberty’s case about being a bad wife.

In short, the son was always family while the daughter-in-law remained as an outsider.

“You must be heading to work, so I should get out of your hair. I’ll get Zack to get you home for dinner tonight.”

“Nana, I’m closing the shop pretty late at night. I probably won’t be able to make it. Can we reschedule for the weekend?”

The school was off on weekends. Since the bookshop’s livelihood depended on students, business was slow on days when school was out. She would have time and no need to set up shop during such occasions.

“Sure.”

Grandma May thoughtfully added, “The weekend, it is. Go on with your work then.”

The old lady hung up the call.

Instead of heading straight to the shop, Serenity sent a text message to her best friend, Jasmine Sox, that she would make it back before the last school bell rang.

With one major milestone ticked off her list, Serenity had to let her sister know and move out of her place.

About ten minutes later, Serenity arrived at her sister’s home.

Hank had gone to work while Liberty was hanging clothes out to dry on the balcony. Seeing that Serenity was home, Liberty expressed her concern. “Why are you back at this hour, Seren? Is the shop closed today?”

“I’ll go when it’s busy in the afternoon. Is Sonny awake yet?”

Sonny was Serenity’s nephew. The boy was currently in his Terrible Twos.

“Not yet. The house won’t be this quiet if he’s awake.”

Serenity asked about last night as she helped with the laundry.

“Seren, Hank isn’t trying to kick you out. He’s simply under a lot of stress. It’s not like I’m working.”

Liberty clarified for her husband.

Serenity kept to herself, knowing well that it was Hank's covert attempt to throw her out.

Hank earned a lot as a manager in a firm. Liberty met him in college and was working in the same firm. When they got married, the man lovingly said to Liberty, “I’ll take care of you. Just stay at home and rest. I need you rested and healthy if we’re going to have a baby.”

Believing she had found the right man, Liberty quit her job and became a housewife. She gave birth to a lovely son a year into the marriage and had no time to dress up between caring for a child and managing housework. Liberty paid no thought to watch her figure, nor could she break free from her routine and return to the workplace.

Fast forward three years, Liberty went from a young and beautiful woman to an overweight and unkempt housewife with no time to spare for herself.

Serenity was five years younger than her sister. Their parents passed away in a car accident when Serenity was ten. Since then, Serenity and Liberty only had each other.

The compensation from their parents’ accident would have been enough for the sisters to complete their studies, but the grandparents from both sides of the family wanted a piece of it. With what was left, the sisters had to scrimp and save to pull through college.

Since the grandparents proceeded to hog the family home, Serenity and her sister resorted to renting. Their renting days were finally over when Liberty walked down the aisle.

Liberty absolutely adored Serenity and talked to her then husband-to-be about living with Serenity after marriage. The man was quick to say yes about taking Liberty and Serenity as a one-package deal, but his resentment was beginning to rear its ugly head.

“I’m sorry, Liberty. I’m a burden to you.”

“No, Seren. Don’t think that way. Mom and Dad left us too soon. I’m all you got.”

Serenity was deeply moved. As a child, Serenity could always count on her sister, but now it was her turn to be Liberty’s rock.

After a brief silence, Serenity took out the marriage license and showed it to Liberty. She said, “I’m married, Liberty. I just signed the papers and came back to let you know. I’ll be packing up and moving out in a bit.”

“You got married?!”

Liberty’s voice turned high pitch, almost to a screech.

Staring at Serenity in disbelief, Liberty snatched the marriage license for a closer inspection. There was her sister’s name alongside a stranger’s name on the papers. Attached was a photo of the newlyweds.

“What’s this about, Serenity? I thought you didn’t even have a boyfriend.”

The man in the photo was good-looking, but his piercing eyes and callous lines along his facial features were telltale signs that he would not be the easiest person to get along with.

While on the way back, Serenity had a story all thought out. She answered, “I have been in a relationship for quite some time. His name is Zachary. He was always busy with work, so he could never make time to come meet you.

“He proposed, and I said yes. Then, we went to get our marriage license at City Hall. He’s a great man, Liberty. He’s good to me. Don’t worry. I’ll have my happily-ever-after.”

Liberty had a hard time buying the story.

She had never heard of a boyfriend in Serenity’s life. Yet, the latter was telling her now that she got a ring on her finger.

Serenity must have overheard the fight last night. Upset, Liberty teared up and remarked, “Seren, I told Hank you paid for groceries. Feel free to stay with us.

“There’s no need to rush to marry or move out.”

Liberty bet Serenity had not known her boyfriend for long. Otherwise, Serenity would not have waited until now to tell her.

The sudden decision to get a marriage license was because Hank believed Serenity overstayed her welcome. Serenity was in a hurry to give herself away before Liberty’s marriage was on the rocks.

With a smile, Serenity comforted her sister. “Liberty, you got nothing to do with it. My relationship with Zachary is very strong. I got my happy ending. You should be happy for me.”

Liberty could not stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks.

Serenity helplessly embraced her sister until Liberty cried her heart out and calmed down. Serenity made a promise to Liberty. “I’ll visit you often, Liberty. Zachary’s house is in Brynfield, not far from yours. It takes me ten minutes on the e-bike.”

“What’s the situation with his family?”

As the marriage was sealed, Liberty had no choice but to accept it. She went on to dig further about her new brother-in-law.

Serenity did not know much about the Yorks. Although she had known Grandma May for three months, Serenity never pried into the family’s private affair and often lent an ear to Grandma May. All she knew was that Zachary was the oldest in the family and had a lot of younger brothers including cousins.

Zachary had a job in one of Wiltspoon’s finest companies. He was doing pretty well for himself as he owned a house and car. Serenity told the little information she knew to her sister.

Having heard that Zachary had no debt on the house, Liberty asked, “That’s his prenuptial property. Seren, can you get him to add your name to the title deed?”

At least, Serenity would be covered if her name was on the deed.

When the couple came out of the bathroom, Zachary looked completely satisfied, while Serenity looked embarrassed.Seeing his wife’s flushed, rosy face, Zachary could not help leaning over to steal another kiss. “Babe, we’ve been married for so long, yet you still blush?“Looks like you’re very satisfied with my performance.”“Shut up.” Serenity lightly slapped his lips, stopping him from continuing. She returned to the bed, gently lifted the blanket, and lay beside her daughter. Serenity’s heart melted when she saw Callia’s peaceful sleeping face.Behind her, Zachary supported himself with one hand on the bed while he reached across Serenity’s body to gently pinch their daughter’s cheek.Serenity immediately slapped his hand away and whispered, “If you wake her up and she cries, you’ll have to soothe her.”Zachary smiled. “I barely used any force. How could that wake her?”Callia was his precious daughter, so he would not dare pinch hard. If he made her face red and Grandma May

When Zachary returned to the room, Serenity was showered and was just coming out of the bathroom.“Are the boys asleep?” Serenity asked softly.“I turned off the lights for them, so they should fall asleep soon. The three kids were quite active in the evening. Only when Callia cried for you did they stop playing.”Zachary walked over and pulled his wife into his arms.“Babe, don’t you think it’s sweeter when it’s just the two of us? Ever since we had kids, we don’t even dare speak loudly for fear of waking them.”Not to mention intimacy.Even being affectionate required moving their daughter aside to sleep before they dared to be close. Otherwise, they were always worried she might wake up.“Weren’t you the one who wanted kids? When I didn’t get pregnant for half a year after marriage, everyone thought I couldn’t have children. You didn’t say it, but you were anxious inside. You really like kids.”From how much he adored Sonny, it was clear Zachary loved children.Though he al

Seeing his beloved wife, Zachary happily pointed it out to his daughter and quickly walked over.Serenity helped Grandma May out of the car.She said, “I just got out of the car and already heard Callia crying. She was crying so loudly that the whole neighborhood could hear it.”Zachary said helplessly, “You know how your precious daughter is. When it’s late and time to sleep, she insists on you holding her. It’s like Daddy’s arms are full of thorns.”He loved his daughter dearly.Usually, his daughter liked him a lot.Every night, however, Callia only wanted her mother. When Callia saw her mother, she instantly stopped crying, though tears still streaked her little face. She reached out her arms, asking to be held.Serenity let go of Grandma May, who no longer needed support because she was too busy feeling sorry for her beloved great-granddaughter.“Mommy’s back. Great-Nana feels so heartbroken for my precious little pie.” The old lady wiped the girl’s tears away. “Don’t cr

“Nana, you’re not staying here tonight?”Grandma May had stayed at the manor for two nights. Alex did not want her to leave because he wanted to learn how to win a girl’s heart.“I’m not staying. I’m not needed these days, so I’ll go back and spend time with my great-granddaughter. She’s much cuter than you all.”Alex had no choice but to stand up and walk his nana and Serenity out.He knew that ever since Grandma May had a great-granddaughter, all the grandsons had been sidelined.Alex remembered that as a child, he often asked his mother why she had not given birth to him as a girl, because if he were a girl, Grandma May would surely love him the most.It left Sasha both amused and exasperated.Sasha said she had dreamed of him being a girl. Unfortunately, he was still a boy.She had four pregnancies, and all four were sons.As his mother put it, it was lucky they were filial and well-raised. Otherwise, they would have driven her mad.It was also fortunate that they were bo

The York brothers had privately said they would not follow the same path as Zachary and Serenity. That path could not be replicated anyway.Serenity chuckled. “Although our love story can’t be copied, love itself is quite simple. If you truly like Dr. Jones, what’s there to fear in confessing?”“I’ll wait a bit longer. I want it to be a sure thing.” Alex was not in a hurry, so Serenity didn’t push further.Grandma May said, “Alex is taking his own sweet time, and it’s making me anxious. If I hadn’t stepped in, he’d still be stuck in place!“Sigh, all my grandsons are so good-looking yet dumb. If not for me, you’d all stay single!”Alex nodded. “Yes, yes, we’re fools who don’t know how to pick our wives. But Nana, you never taught us how either.”The old lady laughed. “Does that even need teaching? You’re all booksmart. This is instinct! When will Sheila have her day off?”“She said if nothing unexpected happens, then it’s this Saturday.”Grandma May said, “Serenity, bring the k

When Alex returned home, he saw two familiar cars parked in the yard. One belonged to his sister-in-law, Serenity, and the other was a bodyguard car.Serenity was here.He parked his bike and went inside with the keys.“Nana, Serenity, I’m back!”Serenity and Grandma May were chatting when Alex came in. Hearing Alex’s voice, Serenity turned toward the door and asked, “Did you deliver the fruits to Dr. Jones?”“I did. She hadn’t gotten off work yet, so I waited at her clinic until she finished.”“Didn’t Callia and Heath come along?” Alex asked about the two children as he sat down.“Nana and I won’t be going back so soon, so we didn’t bring them. Heath has preschool tomorrow. Xavier is there too. With her brothers playing with her, Callia won’t fuss.”When Callia had company, she would not look for her mother.“Your brother is off work already. With him at home watching them, there’s nothing to worry about.”Alex responded, “Oh. Looks like Xavier is basically living at your pl

Josh nodded quickly. He said, “I won’t talk about love letters or compare myself to Zachary anymore. I’m much happier than he is.”He caressed Jasmine’s small abdomen, which was still flat.
