Chapter 3

Author: Gu Lingfei
“I will, Nana,” Serenity casually responded.

Although Grandma May was nice to her, Zachary was her blood relative while Serenity was only related to the family by marriage. Serenity found it hard to believe that the Yorks would stand by Serenity during a conflict between her and Zachary.

Such was the case with her sister’s parents-in-law.

Before marriage, the in-laws were nothing but good to Liberty to the point their birth daughter was jealous.

It was a different story after the wedding. Every time Liberty got into a disagreement with her husband, Hank, her mother-in-law would get on Liberty’s case about being a bad wife.

In short, the son was always family while the daughter-in-law remained as an outsider.

“You must be heading to work, so I should get out of your hair. I’ll get Zack to get you home for dinner tonight.”

“Nana, I’m closing the shop pretty late at night. I probably won’t be able to make it. Can we reschedule for the weekend?”

The school was off on weekends. Since the bookshop’s livelihood depended on students, business was slow on days when school was out. She would have time and no need to set up shop during such occasions.

“Sure.”

Grandma May thoughtfully added, “The weekend, it is. Go on with your work then.”

The old lady hung up the call.

Instead of heading straight to the shop, Serenity sent a text message to her best friend, Jasmine Sox, that she would make it back before the last school bell rang.

With one major milestone ticked off her list, Serenity had to let her sister know and move out of her place.

About ten minutes later, Serenity arrived at her sister’s home.

Hank had gone to work while Liberty was hanging clothes out to dry on the balcony. Seeing that Serenity was home, Liberty expressed her concern. “Why are you back at this hour, Seren? Is the shop closed today?”

“I’ll go when it’s busy in the afternoon. Is Sonny awake yet?”

Sonny was Serenity’s nephew. The boy was currently in his Terrible Twos.

“Not yet. The house won’t be this quiet if he’s awake.”

Serenity asked about last night as she helped with the laundry.

“Seren, Hank isn’t trying to kick you out. He’s simply under a lot of stress. It’s not like I’m working.”

Liberty clarified for her husband.

Serenity kept to herself, knowing well that it was Hank's covert attempt to throw her out.

Hank earned a lot as a manager in a firm. Liberty met him in college and was working in the same firm. When they got married, the man lovingly said to Liberty, “I’ll take care of you. Just stay at home and rest. I need you rested and healthy if we’re going to have a baby.”

Believing she had found the right man, Liberty quit her job and became a housewife. She gave birth to a lovely son a year into the marriage and had no time to dress up between caring for a child and managing housework. Liberty paid no thought to watch her figure, nor could she break free from her routine and return to the workplace.

Fast forward three years, Liberty went from a young and beautiful woman to an overweight and unkempt housewife with no time to spare for herself.

Serenity was five years younger than her sister. Their parents passed away in a car accident when Serenity was ten. Since then, Serenity and Liberty only had each other.

The compensation from their parents’ accident would have been enough for the sisters to complete their studies, but the grandparents from both sides of the family wanted a piece of it. With what was left, the sisters had to scrimp and save to pull through college.

Since the grandparents proceeded to hog the family home, Serenity and her sister resorted to renting. Their renting days were finally over when Liberty walked down the aisle.

Liberty absolutely adored Serenity and talked to her then husband-to-be about living with Serenity after marriage. The man was quick to say yes about taking Liberty and Serenity as a one-package deal, but his resentment was beginning to rear its ugly head.

“I’m sorry, Liberty. I’m a burden to you.”

“No, Seren. Don’t think that way. Mom and Dad left us too soon. I’m all you got.”

Serenity was deeply moved. As a child, Serenity could always count on her sister, but now it was her turn to be Liberty’s rock.

After a brief silence, Serenity took out the marriage license and showed it to Liberty. She said, “I’m married, Liberty. I just signed the papers and came back to let you know. I’ll be packing up and moving out in a bit.”

“You got married?!”

Liberty’s voice turned high pitch, almost to a screech.

Staring at Serenity in disbelief, Liberty snatched the marriage license for a closer inspection. There was her sister’s name alongside a stranger’s name on the papers. Attached was a photo of the newlyweds.

“What’s this about, Serenity? I thought you didn’t even have a boyfriend.”

The man in the photo was good-looking, but his piercing eyes and callous lines along his facial features were telltale signs that he would not be the easiest person to get along with.

While on the way back, Serenity had a story all thought out. She answered, “I have been in a relationship for quite some time. His name is Zachary. He was always busy with work, so he could never make time to come meet you.

“He proposed, and I said yes. Then, we went to get our marriage license at City Hall. He’s a great man, Liberty. He’s good to me. Don’t worry. I’ll have my happily-ever-after.”

Liberty had a hard time buying the story.

She had never heard of a boyfriend in Serenity’s life. Yet, the latter was telling her now that she got a ring on her finger.

Serenity must have overheard the fight last night. Upset, Liberty teared up and remarked, “Seren, I told Hank you paid for groceries. Feel free to stay with us.

“There’s no need to rush to marry or move out.”

Liberty bet Serenity had not known her boyfriend for long. Otherwise, Serenity would not have waited until now to tell her.

The sudden decision to get a marriage license was because Hank believed Serenity overstayed her welcome. Serenity was in a hurry to give herself away before Liberty’s marriage was on the rocks.

With a smile, Serenity comforted her sister. “Liberty, you got nothing to do with it. My relationship with Zachary is very strong. I got my happy ending. You should be happy for me.”

Liberty could not stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks.

Serenity helplessly embraced her sister until Liberty cried her heart out and calmed down. Serenity made a promise to Liberty. “I’ll visit you often, Liberty. Zachary’s house is in Brynfield, not far from yours. It takes me ten minutes on the e-bike.”

“What’s the situation with his family?”

As the marriage was sealed, Liberty had no choice but to accept it. She went on to dig further about her new brother-in-law.

Serenity did not know much about the Yorks. Although she had known Grandma May for three months, Serenity never pried into the family’s private affair and often lent an ear to Grandma May. All she knew was that Zachary was the oldest in the family and had a lot of younger brothers including cousins.

Zachary had a job in one of Wiltspoon’s finest companies. He was doing pretty well for himself as he owned a house and car. Serenity told the little information she knew to her sister.

Having heard that Zachary had no debt on the house, Liberty asked, “That’s his prenuptial property. Seren, can you get him to add your name to the title deed?”

At least, Serenity would be covered if her name was on the deed.

“If our second baby turns out to be a daughter, I should get jealous when you dote on her.”Zachary said lovingly, “Even if we have a daughter, you’re still the top priority in my heart. My love for our children won’t exceed what I feel for you.“Our children will grow up, and we’ll grow old. After they become adults, they’ll leave us and build their own families. You’re the only one who’ll be by my side till we’re old.“You’re the most important person to me, Seren. No one can take your place.”Serenity smiled. “I’ll see if you can keep your word when we have a daughter in the future.“What if we get another son on our second try, babe? Should we go for a third baby?”After thinking about it, Zachary said, “No. We’ll only have two children. We’ll give up if our second baby isn’t a daughter.“No matter how great the psychic is, he isn’t a god. He can make mistakes, too. Zachary tried his best to recall whether he had strongly pressed on Heath’s hand.He thought it was not too bad.“It’s probably fine.”After Serenity coaxed him for a while, Heath stopped crying and stared at his parents.“His hand is probably not broken since he stopped crying. If it were, he wouldn’t have stopped crying this quickly.”Zachary let out a breath of relief. He approached Heath and caressed his face. He said apologetically, “I didn’t do it on purpose, little one. I forgot you were sleeping beside your mom and accidentally pressed on your hand.“I promise I’ll be careful from now on and never hurt you again.”Serenity said, “Why don’t you sleep in the study? Heath isn’t difficult to take care of. I can handle him myself.”“No. I’ll sleep here. I’ll be careful not to squish our son in the future. It’s best not to tire you out during postpartum. Even if Heath is easy to take care of, you have to wake up several times at night to feed him.“If so, you’ll hardly get a

Zachary laughed. “Yes, yes. You have many admirers too. When Ms. Doyle thinks she has too many love rivals, she won’t want to be with you anymore. No girls like having many rivals.”“Serenity has plenty.”Zachary was speechless.“Even after you and Serenity got married, there were still people who had a crush on you and wanted to ruin your marriage.”Zachary did not know what to say.“I just need four people, Zachary. You can have them come over tomorrow.”Zachary feigned anger and said, “Okay. Let’s hang up if you have nothing else. Don’t call me over such trivial matters again. Just contact Sam and have him make the necessary arrangements.”Dylan laughed. “I called you because I missed you and my nephew. Ah, I can’t believe I miss Heath this much when it’s only been a day.”“If you miss him so much, you can come back. I’ll get Alex to be in charge of the branch companies there.”Dylan quickly said, “No. I can do it. Alex can learn from you and the rest for longer. He hasn’t

As Zachary was raised by his grandparents, he was not as close to his parents. The people he cared for the most were still his grandparents. Therefore, parents had to interact with their children daily to build a close relationship. “Is Heath easy to take care of? He’s still on formula? Does he miss me?”“Heath’s doing great. We feed him formula at night because Serenity has to rest.”Zachary glanced at the baby in his arms. Heath had fallen asleep after eating his fill.Things were going well after Heath’s birth. He only slept and ate. However, they did not know if he would be that easy to look after until he got older.“Oh. Is Heath asleep or awake now? Can you take a picture for me, Zachary? I started missing him as soon as I got back.”“He’s asleep. I won’t take a picture. You can look at him as much as you want when you’re back in a month. If you like kids this much, you should marry Ms. Doyle and have babies as soon as possible.”However, Dylan would probably regret it

Dylan said without hesitation, “No need. I don’t want to know her face.”“That won’t do. Apple wants it to be a competition. She wants my man and won’t give up easily. If you don’t know what she looks like, you won’t be able to keep your guard up around her. You might get tricked.“What if you end up in bed with her because of her schemes one day… Will you take responsibility, Dylan?”Dylan was rendered speechless. After a moment, he said resignedly, “Okay. Let me know when we see her. I’ll be on guard and not let her come even ten feet near me. I’ll even learn from Zachary and bring bodyguards daily to prevent calculating women from getting near me.”“There’s no need to exaggerate, but I think you should have bodyguards. Apple is hell-bent on getting you. She might even pounce on you and have sex to make it a sealed deal.“If you have bodyguards, she won’t even have the chance to get near you. That’s safer.“Actually, being six feet away from Apple is enough. However, if you th

Imogen was not in a rush to check the message. She put the bouquet down and kept the accessories in a box. Only then did she sit on the sofa and read the message Dylan had sent her. She thought he would ask if she had arrived home. It turned out that he had sent a few pictures of a few gift boxes addressed to him instead. The sender, however, was not Imogen but Apple.Dylan did not even know who Apple Pine was. He had run background checks on the wealthy families in Huntington, but never took note of how many elite daughters each family had. Therefore, he did not know Apple was an elite daughter of the Pines. Dylan told Imogen that he had thrown the gifts outside. The house he bought was located in a rich neighborhood. Since the people who could access the area were wealthy, he guessed the sender was an elite daughter and asked Imogen to verify it. His Jen was more knowledgeable about the elite daughters in Huntington high society than he was. Imogen called Dylan. Wh
