Chapter 3

Author: Gu Lingfei
“I will, Nana,” Serenity casually responded.

Although Grandma May was nice to her, Zachary was her blood relative while Serenity was only related to the family by marriage. Serenity found it hard to believe that the Yorks would stand by Serenity during a conflict between her and Zachary.

Such was the case with her sister’s parents-in-law.

Before marriage, the in-laws were nothing but good to Liberty to the point their birth daughter was jealous.

It was a different story after the wedding. Every time Liberty got into a disagreement with her husband, Hank, her mother-in-law would get on Liberty’s case about being a bad wife.

In short, the son was always family while the daughter-in-law remained as an outsider.

“You must be heading to work, so I should get out of your hair. I’ll get Zack to get you home for dinner tonight.”

“Nana, I’m closing the shop pretty late at night. I probably won’t be able to make it. Can we reschedule for the weekend?”

The school was off on weekends. Since the bookshop’s livelihood depended on students, business was slow on days when school was out. She would have time and no need to set up shop during such occasions.

“Sure.”

Grandma May thoughtfully added, “The weekend, it is. Go on with your work then.”

The old lady hung up the call.

Instead of heading straight to the shop, Serenity sent a text message to her best friend, Jasmine Sox, that she would make it back before the last school bell rang.

With one major milestone ticked off her list, Serenity had to let her sister know and move out of her place.

About ten minutes later, Serenity arrived at her sister’s home.

Hank had gone to work while Liberty was hanging clothes out to dry on the balcony. Seeing that Serenity was home, Liberty expressed her concern. “Why are you back at this hour, Seren? Is the shop closed today?”

“I’ll go when it’s busy in the afternoon. Is Sonny awake yet?”

Sonny was Serenity’s nephew. The boy was currently in his Terrible Twos.

“Not yet. The house won’t be this quiet if he’s awake.”

Serenity asked about last night as she helped with the laundry.

“Seren, Hank isn’t trying to kick you out. He’s simply under a lot of stress. It’s not like I’m working.”

Liberty clarified for her husband.

Serenity kept to herself, knowing well that it was Hank's covert attempt to throw her out.

Hank earned a lot as a manager in a firm. Liberty met him in college and was working in the same firm. When they got married, the man lovingly said to Liberty, “I’ll take care of you. Just stay at home and rest. I need you rested and healthy if we’re going to have a baby.”

Believing she had found the right man, Liberty quit her job and became a housewife. She gave birth to a lovely son a year into the marriage and had no time to dress up between caring for a child and managing housework. Liberty paid no thought to watch her figure, nor could she break free from her routine and return to the workplace.

Fast forward three years, Liberty went from a young and beautiful woman to an overweight and unkempt housewife with no time to spare for herself.

Serenity was five years younger than her sister. Their parents passed away in a car accident when Serenity was ten. Since then, Serenity and Liberty only had each other.

The compensation from their parents’ accident would have been enough for the sisters to complete their studies, but the grandparents from both sides of the family wanted a piece of it. With what was left, the sisters had to scrimp and save to pull through college.

Since the grandparents proceeded to hog the family home, Serenity and her sister resorted to renting. Their renting days were finally over when Liberty walked down the aisle.

Liberty absolutely adored Serenity and talked to her then husband-to-be about living with Serenity after marriage. The man was quick to say yes about taking Liberty and Serenity as a one-package deal, but his resentment was beginning to rear its ugly head.

“I’m sorry, Liberty. I’m a burden to you.”

“No, Seren. Don’t think that way. Mom and Dad left us too soon. I’m all you got.”

Serenity was deeply moved. As a child, Serenity could always count on her sister, but now it was her turn to be Liberty’s rock.

After a brief silence, Serenity took out the marriage license and showed it to Liberty. She said, “I’m married, Liberty. I just signed the papers and came back to let you know. I’ll be packing up and moving out in a bit.”

“You got married?!”

Liberty’s voice turned high pitch, almost to a screech.

Staring at Serenity in disbelief, Liberty snatched the marriage license for a closer inspection. There was her sister’s name alongside a stranger’s name on the papers. Attached was a photo of the newlyweds.

“What’s this about, Serenity? I thought you didn’t even have a boyfriend.”

The man in the photo was good-looking, but his piercing eyes and callous lines along his facial features were telltale signs that he would not be the easiest person to get along with.

While on the way back, Serenity had a story all thought out. She answered, “I have been in a relationship for quite some time. His name is Zachary. He was always busy with work, so he could never make time to come meet you.

“He proposed, and I said yes. Then, we went to get our marriage license at City Hall. He’s a great man, Liberty. He’s good to me. Don’t worry. I’ll have my happily-ever-after.”

Liberty had a hard time buying the story.

She had never heard of a boyfriend in Serenity’s life. Yet, the latter was telling her now that she got a ring on her finger.

Serenity must have overheard the fight last night. Upset, Liberty teared up and remarked, “Seren, I told Hank you paid for groceries. Feel free to stay with us.

“There’s no need to rush to marry or move out.”

Liberty bet Serenity had not known her boyfriend for long. Otherwise, Serenity would not have waited until now to tell her.

The sudden decision to get a marriage license was because Hank believed Serenity overstayed her welcome. Serenity was in a hurry to give herself away before Liberty’s marriage was on the rocks.

With a smile, Serenity comforted her sister. “Liberty, you got nothing to do with it. My relationship with Zachary is very strong. I got my happy ending. You should be happy for me.”

Liberty could not stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks.

Serenity helplessly embraced her sister until Liberty cried her heart out and calmed down. Serenity made a promise to Liberty. “I’ll visit you often, Liberty. Zachary’s house is in Brynfield, not far from yours. It takes me ten minutes on the e-bike.”

“What’s the situation with his family?”

As the marriage was sealed, Liberty had no choice but to accept it. She went on to dig further about her new brother-in-law.

Serenity did not know much about the Yorks. Although she had known Grandma May for three months, Serenity never pried into the family’s private affair and often lent an ear to Grandma May. All she knew was that Zachary was the oldest in the family and had a lot of younger brothers including cousins.

Zachary had a job in one of Wiltspoon’s finest companies. He was doing pretty well for himself as he owned a house and car. Serenity told the little information she knew to her sister.

Having heard that Zachary had no debt on the house, Liberty asked, “That’s his prenuptial property. Seren, can you get him to add your name to the title deed?”

At least, Serenity would be covered if her name was on the deed.

“Thank you for the reminder, Mr. Brown. I won’t accept a blind date like Mr. Tatum. No matter who introduces him to me, if I say no, then it’s a no.”Everly would have a proper talk with her mother and uncle later.Even if she had to get married, her partner would be her decision.Sonny nodded.Everly continued, “My maternal relatives are always introducing men to me. I’ve rejected countless men and even had people investigate the men they introduced. Not a single one of them was good.”At first, whenever a relative introduced a man to her, she would have him investigated. Once she found his flaws, she would tell her relatives about them. She thought that doing that would make them give up.Unfortunately, she was too naive. Not only did they refuse to give up, but they also became even more persistent. They kept introducing so-called excellent men to her. That was when she realized that they were not doing this for her sake at all. They simply wanted to use her marriage to gain

After being scolded by Andy, Nate was still unconvinced. He muttered, “Everly’s client obviously looks like an outstanding man. I was jealous. He’s the first man I’ve seen who’s better-looking than me.“There’s also the way Everly looks down on everyone. I can’t stand it. If she hadn’t been lucky enough to be born into the Flemming family, she would be nothing.“Who does she think she is? She only gets to be so arrogant because she was born a Flemming, and the Flemmings just happen to have only one child.”Andy scolded his son, “You’re being narrow-minded and can’t see Everly’s strengths. Although she’s a woman, she was raised personally by her grandfather, so she’s more than capable. Even if Old Mr. Flemming steps down, she can hold Flemming Group up all by herself.“That’s right. She has the capital to be arrogant, but do you? All you know is to cause trouble. I told you to please Everly, coax her, and cater to her every whim. Even if she rejects you, you just have to keep pursu

Sarah’s lips twitched into a mocking smile, and she said, “Whether Ms. Flemming can get married or not is none of your concern. She would rather remain unmarried for the rest of her life than give you a chance.“Why don’t you take a good look at yourself first? How terrible must you be that Ms. Flemming would rather not marry than give you a chance? Do you think you’re that outstanding? And you’re that handsome?”“Also, how is Ms. Flemming ugly? Her beauty grows on you, but you’re the kind who looks uglier the longer people look at you. You’re simply not worthy of Ms. Flemming!“You saw our distinguished guest earlier, didn’t you? Now that’s a handsome man. He’s refined, capable, comes from a good family, and has assets worth over ten billion. He’s a genuinely exceptional man. You can’t hold a candle to him. Aren’t you embarrassed even trying to compare yourself to him?”Nate was speechless.Sarah’s words left him red-faced. After standing there dumbfounded for a while, he snorted

“I didn’t insult your guest, Ms. Flemming. He was the one who took it personally.”Nate hurriedly defended himself. “Ms. Flemming, if you think I was in the wrong, I’ll apologize. I’ll go inside and apologize to your guest too. I was impulsive and shouldn’t have said those things.“I was just jealous. I was jealous that your guest is even more handsome than I am, and he looks like a successful businessman. Which company does your distinguished guest work for?”Nate had heard that Everly never deferred to her maternal relatives, and that she would not give even her own uncle any special treatment.Yet, Everly’s uncle desperately wanted to get a hold on this niece of his. After all, she was the successor to Flemming Group. Once Kaden passed away, Flemming Group would be entirely under Everly’s control, and the enormous fortune of the Flemming family would belong to her.Maddie would not inherit much. Rumor had it that Kaden had already prepared his will, and his daughter-in-law woul

“Ms. Flemming, if you don’t give us the chance, how do you know we’re not suitable for you? If you don’t get married, how will you have children? Don’t you need a successor? If you don’t get married or have children, your family’s bloodline will end with you.“You’re the only child, so you probably need a house husband. I’m very suitable for that. I know how to cook and do chores. I’ll be able to keep your household in perfect order.“My cooking’s really good, too. Everyone who tries my cooking says I can go toe-to-toe with a five-star chef.“I have two brothers and I’m the middle child, so my parents won’t object to my marrying into your family. In fact, my brothers wish I would. I’m highly educated and handsome to boot. Our kids won’t be bad-looking at all.“We’ll definitely be able to have outstanding kids. If we nurture them well, they’ll definitely be able to succeed you. We can have more than one to expand the Flemming family tree.“The kids can take your family name. I won’

Two hours later, they arrived at Clearfield Hotel.Everly’s car stopped in its designated parking spot, which she had because she was a shareholder of the hotel.Just as she got out, a well-dressed man jogged over with a bouquet in hand.“Are you Ms. Everly Flemming? I’m Nate Tatum. Your uncle introduced me to you. Your mom’s told you about our blind date, right? You’re really busy, so I waited for you here.”Everly did not want to attend the blind date, but her date actually came all the way to Clearfield Hotel to wait for her.Needless to say, it was her mother who told this guy she would be here. Maddie had not dared to call her directly and told Kaden to pass on the message, also to use him to pressure her to go on the blind date.Everly cast Nate a cold glance, which immediately disabused him of the notion to step closer. He surreptitiously stepped back to put more distance between them even as he forced a smile onto his handsome face.He looked at Everly with apprehensio
