my only way out

CHAPTER 4

Rosalie

I opened my mouth to speak. "I... We.  How... Mate?" I could barely piece two words together as I was utterly dumbfounded.

Even with my shock, I felt hope begin to grow in me that it might not be all that bad but Nathan immediately squashed that hope. "Don't get your hopes up pathetic omega as I will reject you immediately we are alone. To me, you are not my partner nor are you my mate. You are just a runt I am forced to be with. I have someone I already love."

I bit my lips as it began to tremble. He was just like the rest of them, viewing me for my wolf rank and nothing else. I sat there unsure of how to respond and thankfully, the priestess arrived just at that time and began to perform the ceremony.

The whole event went by in a daze and soon, I was tied to Nathan Kincaid forever.

My stomach churned as I felt the intense urge to spill my guts and cry at the same time but I held on knowing what chaos doing that would bring.

"Now you are one, together" the priestess finished ending the ceremony. Everyone began to move to the reception hall one by one but I sat there unsure of what I was to do now.

I was now married to Nathan Kincaid, my sister's ex fiance and my own mate who made it clear that he hates me and would never want me.

Worse still, he was clearly still in love with my sister.

The events after that barely registered in my mind as I kept thinking about my newfound life all day. At the reception, I watched the guests all greet and interact with everyone except the actual bride and groom. Instead it seemed like Damien and Daphne were the newlyweds with the way everyone was fawning over them.

I wasn't complaining though as I wasn't in the right state of mind to entertain everyone and I would never be. Thankfully, we were soon shipped off to what would be 'our' new room.

The attendant that was always beside Nathan, who I learned was called Gerald, bowed to me before handing me the handle of the wheelchair. With that he left, leaving me and Nathan alone.

I absentmindedly pushed a silent Nathan in, my heart beginning to beat in overdrive.

"Stop." That made me freeze as I looked down at him. Those were the first words he said to me since we tied the knot.

I let go of the handle thinking he was referring to that but he soon continued. "I meant that you should stop that thing in your chest from beating so fast. It's annoying." My mouth widened in an 'oh' shape.

I sometimes forget that he, unlike most werewolves in this era, has heightened hearing.

I placed my hand on my chest trying to calm my heart. "S.. sorry, it's just that I'm not used to this situation."

"And what should I do about that? That is your business, just don't disturb me." With that he started wheeling himself away. 

My eyes couldn't help but stray to his legs and before I could stop myself, I blurted out something I immediately regretted. "I can heal you."

He stopped moving altogether and then in the blink of an eye, he was standing before me.

He actually stood before me, eyes glowing red.

His hand wrapped around my throat and he squeezed although not too tight. I was too shocked that he was standing to react. "Don't ever try to play with me, run or help me, I'll break your neck even if it's the last thing I do."

He then stopped and searched my eyes hoping to see probably fear but for some reason, I wasn't afraid. "You can walk?" I croaked out with a shock filled tone.

His brows furrowed as if confused by my question. "That is what you're focusing on?" He asked.

"Yes. I mean everyone said you can't. Or have you been fooling them all?"

He let go of me and then fell back into his wheelchair. "I have not but even if it's not your business."

I inched closer to him and crouched down as my healer instincts took prevalence. I examined his legs from a distance and that was when I found the answer after I saw the fur and claws on his exposed feet.

"So you're using your wolf side to boost your legs for a short duration. That is quite dangerous though as it would keep destroying places other than your legs in the long run. Let me try something." At this point I was rambling but I was too in the zone to realize. 

I grabbed his legs and I could feel him try to jerk them back but I held firm. Soon I felt the power begin to flow from my chest to my fingertips and then into his legs. The claws receded and so did the fur as well as some of the purplish hue his feet had.

I released his legs as soon as I sensed that I was reaching my limit and then looked up at him. He too was looking at me and then everything was still.

I immediately scurried back in panic when I realized what I had done. I just revealed my deepest secret to him. He was still watching me and that too with fascination?

His gaze seemed unable to leave me and I wondered what the hell he was looking at.

I looked sideways and that was when I realized that my golden eyes that were similar to that of the moon goddesses likeness, a major reason I hold my healing powers, were on display.

Fuck! What the hell did I do?

I shut my eyes and immediately willed it away. When I was sure that my eyes were back to normal, I opened them only to realize that Nathan's face was now mere inches from mine.

I gasped.

"Don't panic, runt. I won't tell anyone about your little secret over here." I sighed in relief but he continued. "I won't say anything but in exchange, I want you to heal me. I want to regain everything I've lost"

I bit my lips as every possible escape plan began to run through my head but at that moment, Gina's advice about trying to always have the upper hand came through and I blurted out before I could stop myself. "I agree but if you want me to heal you, we have to agree that immediately you can walk and have regained all you have lost, you'll reject me and break our marriage knot. Do we have a deal?"

I knew I would regret this but to me, it was my only way out.
