(Emily’s POV).
"You didn't go straight to see him?" I asked as he opened the car door.
"I wanted to see how your father is doing first."
We walked in together and I thought he'd go straight away. But I didn't realize that he even wanted to visit first before went away.
When I was about to reach my father’s infirmary, I was surprised to see two men dressed in black suits and glasses, standing by the door.
I immediately approached them and asked because I was worried. "Who are you?!"
I was afraid that they might be Ben or Jane's men, keeping me from going inside.
Then I realized they were bowing in front of me, but when I heard the word 'Boss' I knew it was Mike they meant.
I looked at Mike who was behind me, just silent and acting cool. "Is this your men?" I asked him. There was a slightly calm tone before he answered.
He nodded and looked at me. "This is just in case Ben or Jane come here. So they won't come inside. They will keep on guard for your father.”
At that moment I was completely relieved even though I was nervous at first because I had negative thoughts.
"Please forgive us, ma'am. My name is James and this is Frans," James said, introducing himself. They even bowed to me which made me feel very appreciated.
"Thank you."
I went inside and Mike followed behind me. My father was still sleeping with an assistive device around him, but his face looked a little fresher than yesterday. He was still in shock from what had happened and it was making it a little difficult for him to speak.
Just then the doctor and nurse came in, checking on him.
"Can you do this right? Heal him?" I didn't expect that Mike would speak directly to the doctor like that.
Reflexively, I touched his arm, asking him not to make any noise in case my father woke up.
"Mr. Johnson, nice to meet you. The team and I will do our best for him."
Shockingly, I didn't think that this doctor even knew Mike. Was this man who was now my husband well-known in some circles?
"I don't want you to say such general things! You have to make him well! You have to! Whatever it costs, I'll pay for it!" The intonation of Mike's tone sounded demanding.
The doctor and nurse looked distressed but they seemed to be trying to be professional and respectful of Mike.
"Yes, sir, we will cure him."
"That's something the patient's family should hear."
Mike then let the doctor and nurse examine my father's condition while I remained silent and waited for their words after the examination.
On the one hand, his hand grabbed my waist and it happened just like that, enough to make my blood rush until my heart was racing rapidly.
I sighed a few times because somehow every time he touched me suddenly, I felt that I wasn't wrong to marry him even if it was just to ask for help. Or maybe, just maybe, we would fall in love with each other someday?
Shit! What was I thinking?!
"I'll go over there, then I'll call you and you can listen to what I talk about with him. Do you understand?"
He suddenly spoke like that after the doctor examined my father. Sometimes I was still shocked when he suddenly talked like a cell phone ringing unbidden.
"Ah ... Yes. But is it okay? Doesn't he suspect anything?"
He looked at me with a lopsided smile and suddenly touched my cheek. "As time goes by, you keep getting nervous when you talk to me, Emily. Am I teasing you unknowingly?"
"No! You're not teasing or flirting with me at all!" I was so nervous that I answered him quickly.
His thumb then brushed my lips and I glanced at his finger that brushed my lips just like that.
"I will touch these lips if time shows us anything. Now, I will leave. If you need anything call me and remember, pick up my calls after this."
Mike left and after he disappeared, I breathed a sigh of relief as if I had just restrained myself from breathing because his presence seemed to squeeze my lungs so much that I had trouble breathing.
I looked at my father then, rubbing his hand and smiling bitterly while hoping that he would recover.
I sat on the sofa while waiting for Mike's call. And sure enough, about 30 minutes passed, and Mike finally called me.
Without saying hello, I listened as I swallowed.
"You're so unpredictable, Ben. How could you take over your girlfriend's father's company? Sorry, I mean, your ex-girlfriend?" that was the first question I heard and it sounded so clear, that it made my heart pound as well.
"I don't love her since the beginning, Mike. It's easy for me to pretend like I love her. Besides, she shows me how she loves me.”
He was the most asshole ex I've ever met. I made sure that if he regretted and apologized, I wouldn't forgive him at all.
"You don't have a heart, Ben. Well, but regardless, I can help grow the business in this company," Mike said.
"Are you sure you want to help me? Wouldn't you hate it if someone from our family played tricks on the company?"
My heart was pounding, despite Mike knowing Ben's character, apparently Ben also knew how Mike's character was.
"Don't worry, you're an exception because I think you're too young to do business in such a big company."
Mike sounded so reassuring and I was relieved that he sounded calm despite Ben's words.
"That's impressive. So, there are some things I don't understand, I hope you can help, Mike."
"Tell me, anything."
"I want the company name to be mine."
"Well, that takes time, Ben, you don't have to rush, you can grow the business first before going in that direction. After all, the previous clients have to recognize you as the future owner of this company. That's if you want to be recognized. Because if not, they will assume something happened to this company. Something bad."
Ben hadn't said anything yet, I thought he was thinking about what Mike said.
"Come one, asshole, answer it!" I hissed while biting my fingernails.
"You think so? Well ... then, I'll go with your strategy."
"Sure, whatever you want to learn, I can certainly help you, Ben. You can send any files you don't know to my email, I'll reply and maybe have another meeting with you. For now, I have to go back to my company, I have to work."
"Back? Where were you from? I thought you were from your office," asked Ben, curious.
My heart was pounding again waiting for Mike's answer when Ben asked him, because sometimes his words could always sound like a wonderful surprise, which made my insides jump up and down because of it.
"Met a beautiful woman who I'm sure will be your Aunt in the future."
(Emily’s POV)."Why are you talking to Ben like that?" I wanted to know the answer when he came to pick me up and take me home."What part?""Your aunt?" I was slightly mocking, but hopefully, he wouldn't take it seriously. He gave me a crooked smile and clucked. I heard the sound of his heavy breathing, it was obvious that he was a heavy smoker too. But physically, he looked cool and fairly young for his face with a much older age than me."And you ended the call right away," I added. Then he looked at me for two seconds and refocused on his driving. "Are you angry, Mrs. Johnson?"Ugh, it made my heart flutter to hear that question followed by him calling me by his surname. It was a bit much for a transaction between relationships. Especially since he himself had denounced this marriage as just business, no more."Why?" I asked back to the first question."Because I want to make him curious and show him that I'm normal.""He thinks you're not normal?" "Hmm, not really. It's just tha
(Emily’s POV).It was like I was trapped by my own rejection until he proposed a choice that weighed heavily on me. It was a dilemma even though I knew he meant it as a joke."Let's put aside the things that shouldn't happen, Mike. You said all this is just a transaction like a seller and a buyer, right?" That was my response, trying to sound as normal as possible even though I was quite shaky."That's true, but you must have missed something from the agreement you signed, Emily."I frowned, not understanding what he meant. "What do you mean?""You can check it later at home, I've sent a copy to your email, right?"My heart pounded, wondering what I hadn't read and missed. I didn't read the agreement letter carefully back then because I wanted things to move quickly."Then we'll go home now," I said in a hurry.Unfortunately, Mike didn't even get up from his chair when I did. He seemed calm and even relaxed in his place. I immediately shot him an astonished look."What?""You're in a
(Mike’s POV)."What's wrong, Ben?" It had been a month and he was pretty tense and complained to me a lot until he finally asked to see me. I didn't have to guess because I knew what he was going through. This was one way of punishing him for being a very irresponsible boy."Of all the clients I've worked with, why did only two accept?! I don't understand where I went wrong!"He looked frustrated and it was like I had succeeded in breaking him slowly. For the sake of someone who had been filling my heart lately."Are you following my ways yet? You have to be good with your tongue, just like you did in your college when you played theater." He snorted and his breath hitched. His expression made his frustration very clear and I could only sit still and quiet, observing him."It seems like that's what I haven't done. I was just following your way, offering a lot of benefits at the beginning—I mean, so that they would immediately want to cooperate with me. But they didn't! They said Fra
(Mike’s POV)."Now that we're even alone, do you think you still can't tell me what you're feeling?" I sighed as she enthusiastically wanted to know what I was thinking. I chose to remain silent because then she would definitely not ask again, not even make a sound. And as I predicted, she was silent even when we reached the restaurant. I took her hand to go inside and chose a private place where no one would recognize us.Emily had always asked one thing of me, that as long as this plan was carried out-revenge and taking back her company, she didn't want Ben and his people to know.Of course, that wasn't a difficult thing for me to grant. But every time I was in a private place, I had never been able to think clearly since I thought I had feelings for her.Her hand felt soft and I deliberately hadn't let go of it, wanting to see how she would react. But as the minutes passed, she didn't even give any reaction. After ordering, only then did she look at me and give me another smile. I
(Emily’s POV)."Do you want to come or stay here?" I looked around. Even in the car, it was scary to see the crowd as if I were alone. I figured there was no harm in going with Mike, especially since he said it would only be for a short time and his friend was trustworthy."I'm coming with you."He got out and opened the door for me. He never forgot my hand to be held by him. His treatment so far has been perfect, just like a man a woman would want. But his confession just now ... was beyond my expectations. Honestly, my heart didn't even stop beating fast because of it, making me so nervous when I was around him.His hand never left mine. Even when waiting for his friend, he pulled out a chair for me to sit on while he stood by my side since we were inside the bar.The music was blaring and I tried to enjoy myself even though it wasn't my taste. At least I was not far away from him rather than in the car by myself."Hey, Mike!" A man's greeting voice sounded behind me. I turned my
(Emily’s POV)."Oh, I'm sorry, sir, I really didn't know there was someone inside."It was the doctor who was going to examine my father. It felt like I was saved, but on the other hand, I felt disappointed that what I was thinking about, didn't work out.I don't know how Mike felt, but he looked like he was angry and upset at the doctor for not saying anything to him.I also tried to concentrate on my father during the examination, trying to focus on him because it was the only thing distracting my mind while Mike was still around."How is he? I don't want to receive bad news because you and the others were hired to bring me good news," Mike asked as the doctor finished examining my father. The doctor smiled at Mike and me in turn. "Everything is fine. If Mr. West wakes up later, you can call me because I'll check on him again."That was the best news I'd heard since I'd been in the hospital. After all the time my father had been laid up, at least now I could hear that he was going t
(Emily’s POV).“Oh ... what's going to happen?” I asked him.Even though he sounded so obviously pouncing on me with his words, and even though I probably knew what he meant, I chose to respond.Every now and then I would look at him and he would just stand there with his jaw twitching as if he was holding something inside.I also tried to act casual and didn't say anything when he ignored me. I thought I might have caused him trouble by holding something inside him that I couldn't help. When the car pulled into my driveway, we got out together and I looked at him while letting out my breath. “Want to visit for a while? Maybe some tea will make you feel better?” I asked him.He raised one eyebrow and nodded. We went inside the house and I was surprised when the maid opened the door without me opening it myself with my spare key. I thought they'd come back after cleaning the house, but they didn't. And I guess I didn't need to ask Mike because I didn't want to make him have to explain
(Emily’s POV).“For a few days, I can’t be with you. I have another business that requires me to go to London. But don’t worry, I’ll keep my eye on monitoring Ben.”Hearing that, I don’t know why I felt disappointed. Maybe because two days ago - more precisely, since he kissed me that night, we hadn’t met again. He always had an alibi not to meet me.Didn’t he realize how frustrated I was not to meet him? He usually met me every day and now, I didn’t even know for how long he would be away from me.“Alright. Please take care of yourself.” I could just say that when I wish I could ask how many days he would be there.“You should be the one who takes care of me.”Suddenly I blushed, my heart thumping faster than normal. He knew how to make me feel this and I felt crazy because of him. I gulped down and realized that he couldn’t see my expression, so I could smile freely. “You are a big man and know how to take care of yourself, Mike.”“Hmm, well. You know what, I’m waiting for you to a
