“An undisclosed source has informed us that the marriage between billionaire CEO, Kane Beaumont, and former school teacher, Emilia Taylor, has allegedly hit the rocks. This comes after Emilia was caught, cheating on her husband with her ex-boyfriend, Chad Buruss. We’re told that – “
“Shut up!” Chloe snapped and turned off the TV. “I can’t believe Kane and his family! Why would they make such wild claims to the press?”
“We can’t blame them, you know,” said Emilia. “I was the one who got caught with her hand inside the cookie jar.”
“Yeah, but you weren’t stealing the cookies, you were just counting them.”
Emilia laughed. There was nothing funny about her situation, but her 17-year-old sister always had a way of finding humour even in the worst circumstances.
They were in Emilia’s bedroom where she was feeling sorry for herself while Chloe tried to cheer her up. She’d skipped her classes for today to be with her big sister. She was a freshman at the fashion design academy where she had opted to go to instead of college.
“We have a problem, girls,” their mother said as she came into the room. “I’ve just finished speaking with your father on the phone.”
“What is it?”
“He says Beaumont Enterprises are halting their funding for our second restaurant. Construction has been put on hold and even the supply agreement to the main restaurant has been cancelled as well.”
“Shit!”
“Language, Chloe.”
“That should be the least of our worries right now, Mom. That Beaumont prick is trying to sink us all over again. What a petty asshole!”
“Really, Chloe. I didn’t raise you to be so foul-mouthed.”
“Sorry.”
“Daddy must be devastated right now,” Emilia said sadly. “This is all my fault.”
“Yes, it is!” Her mother replied angrily. “If you must meet with Chad, couldn’t you have done it more discreetly?”
“I didn’t know I was being spied on!”
“How couldn’t you? You were married to the richest guy in the city and you live in California, for god’s sake. This is the headquarters of the paparazzi. They’re everywhere. How can you not know that?”
“Chill out, Mom. She feels bad already, don’t make her feel worse.”
“I don’t care. She should have known better!”
Emilia sighed and got out of bed. She was tired of hearing her mother rant non-stop even though she could understand why.
She went into the bathroom to wash her face and brush her hair. When she came out, her mother was calm and was staring at her curiously as she began to dress up.
“Where are you going?” Lara asked.
“To see if I can fix my mistake.”
“How?”
“Don’t worry about it,” she replied and walked out of the room.
When Kane heard that Emilia was waiting at the reception area to see him, he felt a mix of anger and curiosity. What did she want?
“Send her in,” he said curtly into the intercom.
Two minutes later, she walked into his office dressed in a grey hoodie with matching sweatpants and a blue backpack. Her beautiful hair was tied up in a messy bun.
She wasn’t wearing makeup but that did not take away from her natural beauty. He was attracted to her in a way that pissed him off. He should be angry, instead of getting turned on.
“What can I do for you?” He asked her formally. He didn’t even get up to greet her.
Emilia felt chills running down her body at the sound of his voice. He was as handsome as ever and he looked even sexier with that dark scowl on his face.
Hot damn! She thought and cleared her throat nervously before speaking.
“I know you are mad at me, Kane and you have every right to be,” she began.
“So?”
“I’m not guilty of what I was accused of. I would never disrespect you or your family like that.”
“You weren’t exactly thrilled to be married to me either. I think you were just looking for a way to get out and you found it.”
“No, that’s not true. I was happy with you, Kane. The paparazzi knew what they were doing when they took those photos. This is what they wanted.”
“If this is all you came here to say, then consider yourself heard. You can leave now.”
She sighed in defeat. “I came here to beg you not to punish my family for my mistake.”
“I’m not punishing anyone. Our marriage was a contract that came with certain terms and conditions. You broke your end of the deal and what is happening now is the result of your mistake, not mine.”
“But – “
“Hi, sweetie!” Kendra sang as she barged into the office carrying multiple designer shopping bags. When she saw Emilia, she paused and looked back at Kane.
“She was just leaving,” Kane explained and got on his feet.
Kendra laughed. It was that same irritating sound that made Emilia’s skin crawl with disgust.
“This girl is either shameless or stupid or both,” she said as she gingerly dropped her shopping bags.
"I am not a girl and for your information, I’m still married to Kane. We’re not divorced yet.”
“But you will be very soon and I’m patiently waiting for that to happen.”
“Emilia, you can leave now,” said Kane coldly.
There was nothing left to say. She turned around and walked out of the office.
“The audacity!” Kendra gasped as Emilia closed the office door and left.
Before stepping out of the office building, she wore the dark sunglasses she’d come there with and covered her hair with her hoodie.
She walked right into a crowd of photographers that nearly blinded her with camera flashes.
“Is it true, Emilia? Did Beaumont file for a divorce?”
“Why did you cheat on your husband?”
“How long have you been cheating on Kane?”
“Did you sign a prenup? Will you be getting anything in this divorce?”
“Did you come here to reconcile with him? What did he say?”
They shouted the questions at her from different angles and they wouldn’t let her pass. She finally managed to squeeze past them and started to run.
The paparazzi chased her down the road and people brought out their phones and filmed her as she ran. Some even booed her and laughed mockingly as she tried to escape.
“Taxi!” She screamed as she continued to run. She tripped on the sidewalk and fell. Her sunglasses fell off and her hair came undone.
“Harlot!” Someone yelled at her. She ignored the insult and got on her feet.
She was surrounded again by the paparazzi and they were gleefully taking photos of her as she struggled to get a taxi. She knew she looked like a hot mess and they were loving it.
One taxi finally pulled up beside her and she jumped into it like a fugitive. She covered her face with her hands as the car sped off.
“Why did you go there?” Her mother yelled at her when she got home.
The videos of her running and falling on the sidewalk like a clumsy child were already circulating on social media and her photos have been turned into memes.
“If you must go to Kane, couldn’t you have at least dressed decently?” Her mother continued.
“I just wanted him to know how sorry I was,” she replied. Her eyes were swollen from crying so much.
“Let’s not crucify her, Lara. What’s done is done,” said her father.
“Gosh, I can’t even show my face out there anymore. I’m going to be trolled too,” Chloe complained.
Emilia felt the weight of everyone’s disappointment and it crushed her.
“I am sorry,” she apologized. “I wish I can fix this but I can’t. I’ve tried already and I failed.”
Her mother snorted while Chloe pouted.
“It’s ok, darling,” her father consoled her. “This too shall pass.”
“Daddy, the last time you said something like that, Kane and Kendra stepped out in public looking like Barbie and Ken. We don’t want any more of that kind of distraction, please.”
“This isn’t the time to tell jokes, Chloe. Your sister is hurting.”
“And our lives are crumbling,” their mother added.
“Be kind, Lara. Emilia didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
“I think I should leave,” she said.
“And go where?” Her mother asked. “Please, don’t tell me you’re going to the Beaumont mansion this time.”
“No. I’m leaving California.”
“Where would you go?” Chloe asked. “Are you going to rent an apartment outside the city?”
“No. I’m going to spend some time with Granny in Wyoming.”
“Oh… well, my mother loves a good rehabilitation story so I’ll say that’s an excellent decision,” said Lara.
“That’s a good idea, dear. You need a break from all this madness,” said her dad.
“I don’t envy you one bit,” said Chloe. “When do you leave?”
“Tonight. I’ll go pack my stuff now.”
She left her family in the living room and went into her bedroom. She began by crying for ten minutes straight, then she went to take a hot shower and afterwards, began to pack her bag.
She said her goodbyes and let her dad drive her to the bus station. She arrived at her grandmother’s countryside home a few minutes past 8 p.m.
Granny took one look at her and said, “You have come to the right place, sweetheart.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t call before coming.”
“Oh, please. There’s no need for such formality. Come here.”
Her grandmother’s hug warmed her physically and emotionally. Then they sat at the cosy dining table where Granny attempted to drown Emilia’s sorrow in food.
By the time she finished eating, she was stuffed and too tired to do anything else but sleep. She woke up from her dreamless sleep the next morning to the sound of a lawn mower.
“Gosh, Granny is such a busybody,” she groaned and got out of bed.
When she got downstairs, she was surprised to see a shirtless guy mowing her grandmother’s lawn. He wore a pair of faded ripped jeans and his blue T-shirt was tied around his waist.
His tanned body glistened with sweat as he continued to work under the morning sun. He looked up and caught her staring at him.
“Uh, hi,” she said awkwardly in a small voice that couldn’t be heard over the noise of the lawn mower. She was embarrassed to have been caught staring.
The guy turned off the lawn mower. “Hi. I’m Matt. You’re are?”
“Emilia. You’ve probably heard about me already…”
“What?”
“Those photos and the memes all over the internet yesterday. That was me.”
“I don’t check the internet much.”
“Thank God,” she muttered.
“Huh?”
“Nothing.”
“What did you do?”
“I don’t want to talk about it. Where’s my grandmother?”
“You’re Bertha’s granddaughter? Wow.”
She didn’t know if that was a compliment or an expression of disappointment. She was suddenly aware of her dishevelled look.
“Uh, I better get back inside and start breakfast.”
“I’m sure Bertha already did that. She never leaves home without cooking, no matter how early it is.”
“Who are you again?”
“Matt. Bertha’s unofficial handyman. I help her get things done around here and she pays me with delicious food. I live down the road.”
“Oh, ok. It was nice speaking to you,” she said and turned to leave.
“How long are you staying?”
The question surprised her. “Why do you want to know?”
He grinned and she was impressed with his perfect dentition. His sandy-blond hair was matted on his head with sweat and he looked like one of the dancers in Magic Mike.
Jeez, Matt was a hottie!
“I would like to see you again,” he answered her question. “When I’ve showered and dressed up decently, I mean.”
“You’re not the only one who needs a shower,” she said with a smile. She wondered if he caught the double meaning in her statement.
He did because his grin grew wider. Emilia blushed. Why the hell was she flirting with a stranger in front of her grandmother’s house?
“Lunch?” He asked.
She shrugged. “Where? I’m not familiar with this area.”
“How about a picnic near Lake Vida? It’s a short walk from here.”
“Ok.”
“See you at 2 p.m.?”
“Sure. I mean, of course.”
He chuckled. “No need to be so formal with me.”
“Yeah. Ok,” she said.
She needed to shed that uptight manner that the Beaumonts had drilled into her. She wasn’t a part of their family anymore.
“See you later, Matt,” she said and went back inside. Maybe this distraction was what she needed to get over Kane.
“I can’t get over how lovely this place is,” Emilia gushed. They were sitting by the Lake and enjoying some sandwiches that Matt had brought for them.It was her second week in Wyoming and having lunch together at Lake Vida was becoming one of their favourite pastimes.“These days, it reminds me of you,” Matt said softly.Emilia smiled and looked away. She knew Matt had developed feelings for her and it made her feel guilty. She’d led him on with her constant flirting even though she had no interest in taking their friendship any step further. It had only been a fun distraction for her. She’d eventually confided in him and told him about her situation but it didn’t discourage him one bit.“I know we’ve only known each other for two weeks but the truth is that I really like you, Emilia. I’d like it very much if you can be my girlfriend.”She chuckled. “That’s very adorable. The last time a boy asked me to be his girlfriend was way back in high school.”“But I’m not a boy, am I? I’m a m
“Is it true?” Elsie asked her son. “Is Kendra truly pregnant?”Kane cursed under his breath. “Who told you?”“The gossip magazines!” She snapped and threw them at him. “I can’t believe you, Kane. Why would you keep this from me?”“When did you start reading those rags?”“That’s not the point. Why is Kendra pregnant and I’m finding out about it through third parties?”“It was supposed to be under wraps until my divorce from Emilia is finalized.”“Is it?”“No.”“Why not?”“There’s a process to it, Mother.”“Get it done this week and propose to Kendra.”“I beg your pardon?”“No grandchild of mine will be born out of wedlock.”“I thought you disliked Kendra.”“I still do b
“It’s ok. We can try again some other time,” said Matt while trying his best to hide his disappointment.“I’m sorry,” Emilia apologized.“Please, don’t be. Would you like something to drink?”“A glass of water would be fine.”“You got it!” She said a little too cheerfully and she cringed. The awkwardness in the room was unsettling. He walked across the room to get a glass of water. While he was at it, she watched him and admired his taut ass in those cotton boxers he wore. Why was she finding it difficult to have sex with Matt? After that impulsive kiss on the farm, she’d been sure that there would be a ginormous cosmic explosion once they joined hips.Instead, her body had gone into panic mode and she’d pushed him away when he tried to touch her. She had never felt so stupid in her life!“Here you go,” he said and offered her
“Granny, I’m home!” Emilia called out as she strolled into the house through the kitchen.“I’m in the den!” Granny responded.Emilia dropped her handbag on the kitchen table and went in search of her grandmother. When she entered the den and saw who was sitting with her grandma, the smile on her face melted.“What are you doing here?”“Hi, Emilia,” said Kane, rising to his feet.“I’ll excuse you two,” Granny said, rising too.“Stay right there, Granny!”Her grandmother promptly obeyed and lowered her bum on the soft couch. She already knew that there’d be hell to pay for allowing Kane into the house.“What the hell are you doing here, Kane Beaumont?”“I came to apologize to you.”“Save it! Now, get out of here before I call the police to report a disturbance.”“Your anger
“Thank you for seeing me,” said Lillian with a warm smile.“Of course,” Emilia replied.“Everything was a huge misunderstanding. Mother would have come with me to see you but she’s down with a cold.”“It’s ok. I understand. What shall I offer you?”Lillian chuckled. “You don’t have to be so formal with me. Reserve that for Mother.”Emilia laughed. Lillian was her first visitor after she returned to the city. Kane had asked to see her a couple of times but she’d turned down his requests. She wasn’t ready to face him again just yet.“It would be easy to just throw Kendra under the bus and pile all the blame on her, but we too failed you, Emilia. We allowed ourselves to be swayed by a few sensationalized photos. We didn’t even give you a chance to prove your innocence.”“Well, as my grandmother said, everyone makes mistakes.
“Please, stay. You can go back home tomorrow.”Emilia smiled and snuggled deeper into Kane’s arms. “I didn’t tell my parents that I’d be sleeping over here.”“I’m sure they’ll understand if you don’t show up tonight. It’s not like you’re a teenager with a curfew.”She giggled. “Still…”He held her tighter as if to let her know that he wasn’t ready to let her go. They were in his bed, recovering from the hottest makeup sex in the history of mankind.“I think you should move back here,” he said wistfully.“As what?”“As a part of my family. You were a Beaumont once, remember?”“That was then.”“Meaning?”“You know what I mean.”“Can we start over? And this time, we’ll have a proper relationship. We’ll go on dates
“Congratulations, darling. It is my pleasure to welcome you back to our home,” said Elsie with the brightest smile ever.“Thank you, Mother. I’m happy to be back,” Emilia replied. She’d finally given in to Kane’s request and moved her things back into the Beaumont mansion. Every member of the family showed up to welcome her back, including Jack who still called Emily.Elsie threw a private dinner a few days later to officially announce the engagement to their extended families and close friends. Chloe was beyond ecstatic to be inside the grand mansion again.“We’ll be having the wedding next month in Ireland,” Kane announced during the five-course dinner.Lillian gasped. “So soon? Why the hurry?”“Why wait? Emilia and I are eager to spend every waking moment of our lives together as husband and wife.”“Hear, hear!” Jack cheered.&ldq
When she woke up, her eyelids felt heavy as if she’d been sleeping all day. She lifted herself to a sitting position and groaned with the effort because her back was sore.“You’re awake,” a man whispered. She turned to her right and saw a deliciously handsome man sitting on the chair beside her bed. He was staring at her as if she was an angel descending from heaven. He was dressed in a sky-blue polo shirt and blue jeans. His black wavy hair was badly in need of a trim and his hazel eyes glowed with awe.“What are you doing here?” She asked him.“I’ve been waiting for you to wake up,” he replied in a deep baritone voice. He reached for her hand, but she shrank away from him. What a creep! It wasn’t enough that he’d sat there and watched her sleep, now he wanted to touch her too.“Are you ok?” He asked.“I should be asking you that question. Why
Emilia’s road to recovery was a slow and painful one. After six weeks, she was moved to a regular private ward where she got around in a wheelchair.“The doctors believe that your spine injury has healed enough for you to begin physical therapy,” Kane announced to her one afternoon.“That’s good news,” she smiled.“Yes. Who knows, you might get back on your feet in time for the twin’s fourth birthday.”“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, please.”Kane placed his hand on hers and squeezed it gently. “I am not afraid to hope, Emilia.”She shrugged. “Sometimes, hope ends up in disappointment.”“Don’t say that. I believe you’ll walk again.”His phone buzzed. He checked it and got on his feet. “Sorry, my love. This is an important business call.”“You don’t need my permission to answer your phone, Kane. Go ahead and take the call but do it outside. I think I’ll take a nap,” she said and yawned. He pecked her on the cheek and hurried out of the room. Emilia got comfortable on her bed and clo
Kane thought it was only possible to dodge bullets in movies but he’d done it in real life. When the old man showed up with the gun and yelled at him, Kane had preempted his opponent’s move and dropped to the ground before he pulled the trigger. He lunged at the man, knocking him to the ground. Hank fired another shot that went into the ceiling and Kane grabbed the rifle, trying to wrestle it from his grip.“Get off me, you bastard!” Hank yelled at him as he continued to maintain his hold on the gun.Kane headbutted him, destabilizing Hank for a few seconds. He finally snatched the gun from his hands and got up.“You bastard. You broke my nose,” Hank lamented and wiped the blood from his nostril.“Who the hell are you?” Kane asked him while aiming the rifler at its owner.“I’m Hank. This is my cabin and you’re a trespasser.”Kane glanced at Emilia and saw that she
Kane felt like smashing his fist into something. He was so angry he couldn’t think straight. He should never have left Emilia alone. He should have given his Qatari business partners an excuse for not showing up to the contract signing ceremony. Now, he would still miss the event and his wife’s life is in danger as well.“I am going to kill that guy when I see him again,” he muttered angrily.Emilia had suggested that Matt could be the stalker but he had written off that possibility because he was so certain that his wife’s ex-lover was safely tucked away in Wyoming. The bastard had waited for him to leave before finally making his move. His phone rang. It was his mother calling.“Yes, Mother?” He answered impatiently.“The police have found the kidnapper’s vehicle,” Elsie said shakily.Kane sighed with relief. “Has he been arrested?”“Well… that isn’t possible anymore.”“Why not?”“He’s dead. They said the vehicle was crushed completely. They’d have to cut it up to bring out the body
When Emilia regained consciousness, it was dark and she could smell the delicious aroma of beef stew. She was in so much pain that the only part of her body that she could move was her eyes.A slow scan around her surroundings showed her that she was inside a log cabin. She was in a small room, lying on a bed alone. There was one chair in the room beside the bed and a bookshelf with a lantern on top of it.She suddenly remembered that Matt had said he was taking her to a cabin before she jumped on him. Panic gripped her.Had he somehow managed to survive that terrible crash and brought her here after all? How was she going to escape now?She heard the footsteps coming towards the room and a male voice humming a tune. Who was that? Her saviour or her captor? The fear of the unknown made her nervous but she couldn’t get up from the bed to hide. She seemed pinned to the spot.A few seconds later, a strange man showed up at the doorway, ho
“Who is it?” Lara called out from the living room.“Don’t say a word,” Matt warned Emilia.“So, you’re the stalker.”“I hate that word. I wasn’t stalking you, by the way. I was just letting you know that I’ll come back for you and now, here I am.”“What do you think you’re doing, Matt?” She asked him softly. “How do you think this is going to end?”“It’s going to end with you following me quietly and going back to Wyoming with me. Or we could go to Connecticut together. Do you remember how much fun it was when we were together in that hotel, making love all night?”“That wasn’t a fun memory for me,” she replied flatly. “it was a painful time in my life when I was searching frantically for my missing child.”“Well, you’ve found her, haven’t you? Now, stop talking and com
“We will have the mansion under a one-week surveillance to see if the stalker will show up again,” said the police officer, Gary Wesley. “so, have no fear, Mrs Beaumont. If he shows up again, we will catch him and arrest him.”“That’s very reassuring, thank you.” Said Emilia.“If the stalker isn’t caught this week, will you extend your surveillance by another week?” Kane wanted to know.“Let’s see how this week goes first but I am confident that we will catch the stalker if he shows up again,” said officer Wesley.“Fair enough. Thank you for your time.”After the policeman left, Kane joined Emilia in the sunroom where she was brooding alone.“Don’t worry, my love. You’re safe with me,” he said softly. “and if the police can’t protect us, nobody else can.”“I’m just trying to figure out who could be playing this prank on me. What if it’s Matt?”“Who? The Wyoming guy?”“Yes.”“I don’t think so. Why would he leave his job and family to come here and leave dumb notes for you?”“I know, bu
“I really enjoyed our vacation but it does feel good to be back home,” Emilia sighed happily one week later as she relaxed in the family swimming pool with Lillian.Their children were in the kiddies' swimming pool nearby with their nannies and swimming instructors.“I can tell you had a great time. You’re glowing like a crystal ball.”“I am? Gee, thanks.”“I envy you. I wish I can go on a vacation too.”“Why not?”Lillian sighed heavily. “This divorce negotiation with Samuel is becoming a pain in the ass. We have another mediation scheduled for next week with our attornies.”“What’s going on?”“That greedy son-of-a-bitch wants spousal support and is demanding a piece of some of my properties.”“What!”“I can’t believe his audacity. What makes him think he’s entitled to anything
“That audio recording has done its magic,” Virgil informed Kane over the phone a few days after the TV interview. “the publishing company has cancelled their deal with Serena.”“As they should. She was going to write hundreds of pages filled with lies about me and my family. She should have taken the money I offered her.”“She might reach out to you for it.”“That offer is off the table. She missed her chance.”“Well, that’s that then. My work here is done but don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you need my services again.”“Of course, thank you.”After the phone conversation, he went in search of Emilia and found her in the sunroom with Lillian and Elsie.“Hello, ladies. May I join you?”“Of course, darling,” said Elsie. “we were going over the details of your upcoming wedding anniversary party.&r
“Romeo and Juliet… I was wondering when both of you will finally show up here,” said Serena with a delighted grin.“Let’s cut to the chase then,” said Kane curtly. “my wife and I are ready to offer you twice the amount you’re getting from the publishing house to write your book.”Serena giggled. “Are you trying to silence me? I am an American citizen and I have the right to free speech.”“Not if your free speech is a bunch of lies targeted at destroying our reputation,” said Emilia.“You’re one to talk. Aren’t you the same woman that cheated on her husband with a random farmhand in Wyoming? And you’re here talking about your reputation. How ironic.”“How much do you want?” Kane asked her.“I’ve told you a billion times already, Kane. I don’t want your money, I want you.”“What’s that supposed to mean?”“Divorce this woman who is unworthy of you and then marry me. I will be devoted to you, I will be faithful to you and I will make you proud wherever I go.”“That will never happen,” Emi
