At the grand suite of the hotel, Hayley is being scolded while the make-up artist does her make-up. Although Cassandra is being loud, she could not hear her mother. All she thinks about was how she forgot it was her birthday, how her mother has not greeted her but Kenji did. The guy she dislike had remembered her birthday.
"Your makeup is all set, love. The hair will be done soon and you can change to your gown."
Hayley smiled at the artist and then reached for her phone. The first thing she saw on the screen was a text from Lucas and it immediately made her grin. Lucas never fails to greet her with a happy birthday.
After she texted back with a thank you, Cassandra and the other staff told her to get changed to her wedding gown. The designer and his team had to help her. In order for it to be elegant, they need to assist her every time. Now she just hopes she doesn't trip over and be a laugh of the crowd.
"Oh look at the time! We won't make it if we wait for another minute!" Cassandra yells, taking her hand. "We have to go, my flower! We don't want to keep your groom waiting!"
"Mother? Aren't you supposed to be at the church already?"
"It can't be helped since you are late!"
Cassandra pulled her, making her hurry and walk outside. There were still assistants following her as they make their way to the bridal car, making sure the long part of the dress isn't folded wrong.
And finally, when she's inside the bridal car, she could, at last, hear silence. She isn't happy nor too sad about this wedding. All she wants is for it to get done with so she can go home and be free again.
"You don't seem too happy, milady."
Hayley looks up and saw her driver glancing in the rearview mirror. She flashes a smile at her driver.
"I'm just nervous. I think I'm going to stumble down the aisle."
"Oh, don't worry, milady. I am sure your groom will come and hold you."
My groom... she thought. It was considerate and thoughtful of Kenji to have proposed to her last night. She thought she would never hear a proposal but she did. It's even funny how it felt so right when she said yes.
The moment finally came and they arrived in front of the church. A butler had opened the door for her and before she left, she thanked her driver for the company. Then she stepped out and a lot of assistance gathered to her.
Her parents made their way to her. Her dad, Sam even complimented her as they ready everything for the grand entrance she was going to make. Once that door opened wide, she has to take steps forward. She had no bridesmaids, no maid of honor nor flower girls. Though they are traditionally there, she opted for nothing.
Hayley does have a bunch of school friends but they are school friends and she will be transferring to another school. Sooner or later, they will forget her so she doesn't stay close to anybody but Lucas and the people from the orphanage.
"I'm sorry that you have to do this, my love."
She turned to her father who uttered those words and saw a smile on his face. It suddenly made her feel hate and she face front.
"I don't need a sorry, father. I should have known that I am going to be married off to somebody I do not have feelings for."
The water had easily made its way to swarm up Hayley's eyes. She cannot cry or else everybody will think she is beyond happy to get married.
Then suddenly, the moment of truth came when the door opened. It's exactly then when a tear fell from her eyes and they started marching together with the music. This will end soon, she thought.
As she walk down the aisle, she only focused on the man waiting for her at the altar. Kenji's face was not so visible from her veil and tears but her gaze remained centered to him. When they reached the end, her father was about to lift her veil when she stopped and held his wrist.
"No, father. I would like for Kenji to do it after the ceremony," she whispers.
It seems like her father understood and nodded. With red eyes from his tears, her father congratulated Kenji, telling Kenji to take care of her, and they exchanged some lovely words they both don't mean.
And finally, her parents left and Kenji took her hand, assisting her to the altar facing the priest. She could not help but cry silently, she didn't even care about what the priest has been saying.
"If you want, you can be a runaway bride," Kenji whispers to her. "You have to stop crying. I don't want an ugly wife in pictures."
Hayley's brows knitted together but she bet Kenji could barely see that. Oh, how she loves to kick Kenji off the alter and make people laugh at him. Imagining him stumbling some steps off the altar suddenly made her chuckle loud and she covers her mouth. But her laugh has let out. The damage has been done.
"I'm sorry, father," she utters, clearing her throat. She was beginning to stay serious when she feels Kenji's shoulder shaking. And when she looks at him, she saw that wide smile on his face.
"I will kill you later, Kenji," she mumbles.
Everything was then quiet but after a while, Kenji had leaned towards her again, whispering some dumb stuff to her ear like at their practice. She swore she wasn't going to do it but she couldn't help and she turned slightly to her right and saw what Kenji meant when he said one of their guests look like a burrito in her gown and he was not wrong.
Like Kenji, she was shaking, whimpering while she keep her mouth close. When they look up, they saw the priest's eyes darted on them and they stopped, coughing softly in the same time.
"Did you not hear what I said? It's time for the exchanging of vows children!"
"Oh!" They both said in chorus, standing up and faced each other. That's why the priest was eyeing them, the readings were done. They were supposed to stand up already.
"Uhm... Who does the vows first?" Kenji asked, chuckling awkwardly.
"You, young man, will do the vow first," the priest said shaking his head in disappointment. "Are you two really serious about marrying each other?"
"Of course, father!" they answered in chorus.
"Well then, I am told you have your vows. Please state it after your I do's ." The priest gestured his hand for Kenji to say his vow. "Do you, Kenji Johan Maledict take Hayley Amber Grimroe, as your wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part, according to God's holy ordinance?"
"Uhm, I know I was supposed to have my speech ready but I think I said everything to you Hayley last night," he said looking at the crowds then back at Hayley whose eyes were darted at him.
"You are supposed to just say I do!" she muttered.
But Kenji plastered a smile and took her hand. Their eyes locked on each other and she could see the sincerity in his eyes.
"I just want you to know that even though we have different plans and we are young, we can always find a home in each other. We fight more often than we agree on things but... let's stay together. Let's stay being each other's home," he stops and took the wedding ring from the bearer and slide it in her left ring finger. It has such plain design and three engraved stones. "I will, father."
"Well then," the priest turned to face Hayley who had her focus on Kenji. "Do you, Hayley Amber--"
"I do, father." Her sudden interruption had received gasps from the crowd and it also had Kenji's eyes round.
With the silence of the crowd, Hayley suddenly felt hot and she took the wedding ring with her sweaty hands. Hayley knows she should have let the priest finished but if she waited she's afraid she will forget what she's about to say. Reaching to take Kenji's hand, she slid the ring on his finger and look him in the eyes.
"I didn't prepare a speech. I'm quite nervous so I'm sorry father for interrupting," she glances at the priest who gestured to go on with her vow. "Kenji Johan Maledict, you are right. We fight almost every time, we ignore each other's businesses and you hate how I mess up the kitchen. We stand here in front of the altar to make a promise and so I will make one. I vow to thee Lord, even if sometimes we dislike each other, I will be your home and you will be mine."
The whole church was suddenly silent, even Kenji seemed stuck staring at her. Then he suddenly raised his hand and lift her veil and he touched her cheek, softly. They both knew that the ceremony has not ended yet and the priest was yet to announce them husband and wife but Kenji was looking at her wet eyes. Slowly, he brought his face closer and she was too mesmerized to look away.
When he got too close, Hayley had closed her eyes and she felt his lips on hers. She heard the crowd gasp, their giggles, and then the priest announcing them as husband and wife.
But when she felt Kenji's lips started moving she could not help but kiss him back, trying to sync with him. His kiss was gentle but it was making her weak. Maybe Kenji noticed and he wrapped an arm around her bringing her closer and his other hand on her cheek.
It was hard to stop and his tongue had begged entrance that she had given. Now his tongue plays inside her mouth. It was giving the damn butterflies that she could not control at all. It's scary but she loves how he tastes.
After the kiss, their forehead touched as they catch their breaths. They hear the crowds clapping but they were left staring at each other until it was time for photographs.
In between the picture taking, Cassandra took the chance to whisper in Hayley's ear that the kiss was believable enough. Her mother also told her that she had taken care of the orphanage's property, that she had the land lists as the Grimroe's property.
"You promised the money, not the property," Hayley grunts, smiling every now and then for the picture. Her happy mood has been shot down.
"It's the same thing honey. After all, when we die, it's all yours. We just need to make sure you stay married to dear Kenji."
Tears started filling Hayley's eyes and she looked up, biting her lower lip. Her mother had deceived her once again! Why does Cassandra have to ruin everything for her?
At the reception venue, Hayley was just looking at the happy guests, holding her glass of champagne. Kenji was busy with the other part of their family. She is supposed to be with him but she had excused herself from the heels she wore. The party is almost over anyway.
Just as she was about to excuse herself to the restroom, Cristy had approached her. She thought she was going to get teased because of that kiss she had with Kenji but Cristy's face tells otherwise.
"Is something the matter?" she asked.
"Milady, I'm afraid you should check your phone."
With Cristy's tone of voice, she immediately check her phone and her eyes widened upon seeing the screen. Full of missed calls and texts from Lucas. It got her shaking.
"I think your mother had let him know."
Wiping her tears rashly, Hayley storm out of the loud venue and went to the parking lot. There, she tried texting Lucas but he would not respond so she pressed the call button. It ranged but it gets rejected. She tries a couple of times until he finally picked up.
"Lucas, please hear--"
"You broke your promise, Hayley," he cuts her off. Hayley could feel how angry Lucas was. "You said you would not do anything like that! And I told you, you didn't have to save the orphanage nor me!"
"But I promised!" she cries, her voice breaking down. "When you calm down can we please talk? I didn't mean to keep it a secret. I-I just had to do it, Lucas. I'm not breaking my promise to you! I am still--"
"You are not! I don't want any help from you, Hayley. You fucking didn't have to marry a guy you don't love just for this damn orphanage and me! Damn it! I shouldn't have mentioned to you the study abroad!"
"I love you, Lucas..." she sobs, holding her aching chest. "You're the only one I have that understands. Please, don't hate me."
"I could never hate you. But I don't want to talk to you right now. I might end up going there and kill them."
"That's something you should never do, Lucas! I will wait for you to cool down," she sniffs, catching her breath. "Let's talk it over."
The phone call just ended and Hayley is still clutching her chest. It still feels like her heart is being squeezed and her tears kept falling. She inhaled deeply and let it out then she turns around to go back. Once she did she froze and her eyes widened at the sight of Kenji in front of her. His features were clouded and his lips were pressed together, his rare gray eyes darted at her.
"So, you do have a boyfriend."
Kenji was keeping an eye on Hayley even though he is talking with the guests. But just after a little while, he sees her talking to her assistant. And when Hayley suddenly ran out, he had to excuse himself and follow her outside. At the parking lot, he watches as she panicked, walking back and forth holding her cellphone. He was about to approach her when she mentioned a guy's name. It made him stop at the step his taking and listen to her cries with a frown on his face. Listening to Hayley desperately pleading for someone made him scoff. Hayley is sure a damn two-faced shit pretending to be this dignified fierce woman but when it comes to a guy she cries and pleads this much? He regrets ever selling his car for the damn rings. What the heck was he expecting? Hayley was in it for the money too but instead of for herself she was doing it for a guy. What a shame! Kenji had started liking her and the kiss they shared, he meant it. When
Around four in the afternoon when Kenji got home from the bank. He needed to create a savings account for him and Hayley just like they had agreed on.Inside their unit, everything was quiet so he figured Hayley must have gone out. He shrugged it off. Well, rules are rules, he shouldn't care if she was begging her damn boyfriend to come back or if she's jumping off a building right now.On his way to the kitchen to get some water, he noticed a slight footprint of blood and his eyes went round. The space between his eyebrows creased and he darted his eyes towards Hayley's room. It's none of his business but still, he rolled his eyes and walk towards her door. He raised his fist and knock. When no one answered, he turned the handle and he was surprised that she didn't leave it locked. The inside is a total art of disorganization. He can't believe he married someone as messy as Hayley. Blowing a heavy sigh, he welcomes himself in.Ke
They stopped by a pharmacy to buy her ointment and cornettos. She thought they were going to go straight back home but Kenji brought her to the park where they sat on a bench. There were not a lot of people there and it was quiet. "This is the last time I am going to be good to you so you better be good to me too," Kenji suddenly stated, handing her an ice cream. "Where have you been?" "I went to see Lucas. I had to make up with him before he leaves the country." "You guys broke up?" With a frown, Hayley turned to throw Kenji a glare. Why does this dude keep on insisting that she has a boyfriend? "Lucas is not my boyfriend, you idiot!" "Ah, so you're saying you two don't have a label but love each other? Something like that?" Hayley snorted, rolling her eyes, and started opening her ice cream. It's much more sensible that she eats her ice cream before it starts melting than answer her husband's ridiculous questions.
The days waiting for school to open is finally coming to an end for Hayley. She has researched everything about the Shinrea High School of Elites, the list of achievements by the school, and its high honor students. It is said that the average grade for their students was A+ and she barely gets a B in her old school. Just how smart are those students there? Does this mean she needs to damn study harder than she already did? Grading kills students like her. Hayley got off her bed and head outside. In their living room, she sees Kenji scrolling through his phone fast. She scrunched up her face, wondering how he can read what's on his news feed if he scrolls so fast like that. Slowly, she made her way to sit on the opposite chair as him. Then she took the remote from the center table, turning on the television, and pretend she's watching. But every now and then, she would glimpse at him, finding the opportunity to ask the question in her head.
It's been more than a minute and Hayley is still staring at the inside of their fridge with a grumpy face. That shit husband of hers said he is in charge of cooking and that he'd leave something for her to heat but there's no cooked food in the fridge! Sighing heavily, Hayley had closed the door and opened cabinets. Maybe there are some biscuits, she could eat. When she found a jar of chocolate chip, her eyes twinkled and she took it with her to the living room. She turned on their television and decided to watch a movie. In the first quarter of the movie, she glances at her phone to look at the time and it says eleven thirty-eight. Just some moments later, she hears a knock on their door and she immediately pauses her movie. Kenji doesn't knock at all so it sent goosebumps to her. She stands up and slowly went to the door. She wishes they had put that darn peephole a little lower so she'd see who was outside. When the knocking went louder, she inhaled
Just as the bell rang, everybody said goodbye to their teacher. The cool part is, the teacher always needs to get out of a classroom first before they start heading out. To Hayley, it was a new nice thing. At her old school, almost everyone just storms out as soon as the bell rings without even saying goodbye to their teacher. After getting her things, she noticed that Jasper was still sleeping, his head and arms rested on his desk. When she turned right, she sees Elea taking out her lunch box. So she doesn't go to the canteen. "What are you looking at?" Hayley immediately shifted her gaze to her bag. "I apologize. I thought everyone here goes to the cafeteria." "Cafeteria is full of shit people. You can bring your own lunch box to avoid the scenes there. Plus, it's fun preparing a lunch." "I'm not a good cook so I might bring a burnt lunch." "I'm Eleanor Waiver, but you can call me Elea for short," she smiles
Hayley missed her chance to hang out with her new classmates. Unfortunately, because of that stupid Kenji, she had to decline Elea and Jasper's offer. And just when she waited for Kenji, his mother, Shelby had called her so suddenly asking her out. Because she's pissed with Kenji, she ditched him and accepted Shelby's invitation. Mrs. Maledict sent her a chauffeur and on her way to meet Shelby, that's when Kenji called. She picked up and had a pretty loud conversation. It was short and she ended up hanging up on him. Oh, she's so pissed so she just kept on rejecting his calls. They stopped by a famous cafe in the city and another man opened up her door. She then carefully steps outside, remembering that the wind might blow her short skirt. Inside, she was escorted by the man who opened the door for her. In one corner, she sees Shelby plastering a sweet grin on her face upon seeing her. "My lovely, Hayley!" Shelby stand up to embrace her an
When Hayley woke up, she found herself alone in Kenji's bed. She knew it's a school day and she knew if she stayed thinking for another 30 minutes she will be running late for school. The thing is, she remembers everything that she did last night, including the kiss. It's just she thought it was a dream. Now she's kicking the blanket off her, cursing herself for being so dumb, slapping her forehead slightly, and biting on her lower lip. Aish! She just hopes when she goes out Kenji is not there anymore. In front of the door, she reached for the doorknob and inhaled deeply. She blew it out and turned the doorknob, pushing the door open. She peeked outside with orphan eyes. When the outside seemed peaceful, she open the door wide and stepped outside. She silently walks through the little hallway that they have and into the living room. With one hand on her chest, she sighed heavily."Looks like he left already," she muttered, plastering a s
Under the beautiful blue sky, Eleanor and Jasper walked out of the church sealing their promise in front of a lot of people. Then they went to the reception where the afterparty is held. It was not as grand as my wedding but it was happier. As the party was over, the newlywed made their way to their car after bidding goodbye to us for their honeymoon. Eren and Greg with their girlfriends went home. Mafu and Clarielle-- which I never thought had something-- had gone to enjoy the night. That leaves us, Kenji, Bren and I to do something fun. Bren was entrusted to us after all. "So, what do you like to do, baby Bren?" "I'm not a baby anymore, aunt Hayhay. I'm a big boy now!" This makes me laugh. Bren is just seven an
Hayley's heart was just crushed the moment she heard the name. She felt everything lost in time and even when it was just a second, to her, she was transmitted somewhere dim and slow. Until Clarielle took her hand taking her back to the real world. "I've heard so much about you, sister! Finally, I get to see you in person!" Clarielle continues to get excited. Is this girl really calling her sister? It could have been sweet if Clarielle wasn't Kenji's new girl but she is. Hayley flashes a faint smile. "It's nice to meet you too." It's nice to get slapped like this, words she can't say so she continues to lift the corners of her mouth higher. "Though I'm not so familiar with you, I've heard your name twice." "Oh, right! I'm so
Before they know it, the trip was over. Hayley thought of staying because she fell in love with the ocean and the underwater creatures. She wanted to keep swimming and submerge herself with the ocean. When she's swimming, she feels like she's floating away from her problems, her painful feelings. But the sun always sets and she has to go home. As they board the plane, they all talked about Jasper and Eleanor's wedding. Hayley had almost forgotten about the date. Luckily, they are discussing everything now. "I hope you guys are free during the practice. It won't take long and it's maybe just two or three times," Eleanor stated. "I'm always free," Mafu said, raising his hand. "But I do need a favor to ask. I'll text you the details later in private." "Are you going to steal Eleanor from Jasper?" Greg joked, softly chuckling which earned a glare from Mafu. "That's why Lily doesn't like you!" "Hey, Lily likes me!" "Oh c'mon!
Greg for no reason woke up early and head out to see the morning sun. Surprisingly, he saw Kenji in the lobby with a backpack on. Greg frowned approaching Kenji."Yo! I thought you leave in the evening? What's with the bag?" Greg asked."Change of plans," Kenji told him like it's no big deal that he is leaving. "I have something important to do. I'll hang out next time.""Next time? Yo! You said it the last time but we never saw you then, you piece of trash! Don't give me that I'll hang out next time!""Chill bro!" Kenji tapped his shoulder while chuckling. "I'm staying in the country for good so chill out! Just give me this time.""Does Hayley know that you are leaving e
The night was fantastic, the foods served by the resort are really delicious that Bren really enjoyed. Their surrounding was peacefully harmonizing with everything except Kenji and Hayley. They noticed how the two of them are glaring at each other since they were sitting the opposite sides. Guess their sweetness must have expired, all of their friends thought. To lighten the night, Mafu took grabbed his glass and raised it up. "Cheers to us gathering peacefully!" he cheered. When Greg raised his glass, the rest of them just followed so it's not so awkward for everyone. Hayley had a glass of sparkling wine that she raised and when she brought it down, closer to her lips, Kenji suddenly took her drink and drank it. Everyone ha
"Do you think they're alright?" Eleanor asked the people inside the van. "Hayley was so mad, she is going cut your head off, Mafu.""They will be fine! At least she won't have any other escape!""I feel bad for Hayley," Greg stated. "We are sabotaging her.""Just chill guys! We will know what happens when we see them!" Eren told them. But Eleanor was still worried about her best friend. She is a terrible friend for agreeing with the group's plan to bring back Hayley and Kenji. Although she heard Kenji say that he loves her the same, to Eleanor, Kenji seemed changed."Something weighing your mind?" Jasper noticed her blank stare."Yes. I'm just worried about Hayley," she replied, flashing a smile. "Kenji just feels different. Like he is back to being that unapproachable guy who puts a line you're unable to cross.""It's something understandable. They spent four years apart. Any person would try to change bad habits but I think Kenji is
Hayley froze in where she was. She doesn't even know if she should look back and gaze at the face she misses or pretend to be cool about his sudden reappearance. "Yo! Dude!" Mafu cheered that snapped Hayley back. As Mafu runs to hug Kenji, Hayley took the chance to turn to see her husband. Kenji looked way better than when she first met him. He was brighter, more handsome and his wide smiles were back. Tears were starting to form in the corners of her eyes so she looked away. "Man, you didn't tell me you were coming!" Greg yells. They were crowding around Kenji and so Hayley took this chance to go on ahead. She doesn't know how to face Kenji. Everything about him changed and he didn't seem to mind her too. It will only embarrass her if she acts close when they are not close anymore. At the waiting area, Hayley immediately took off the rings on her finger and put them inside her bag. Why did nobody tell her that Kenji was comi
Time flies so quickly and it has been four years since Kenji disappeared on them. Only one semester left in college and Hayley will be graduating soon. The first two years, she was still hopeful to find Kenji, hopeful that he will return but then as soon as she was on the third year of waiting, that hope she has slowly faded. Whenever Hayley asks about Kenji to the guys, they would tell her they don't know where he is at the moment. They said Kenji never once contacted them too. Even though she thinks they lie, she would not blame them. After all, it was her who hurt their friend. Hayley sighed, looking at the big house in front of her. She is using it as a reference for her next project but the fresh breeze and the sky are just reminding her of the meadow. Four years... it has been four long years but the rings were still on her ring finger. "Your thoughts are flying somewhere again!" When she turned to her right, she saw Eleanor who just returned fr
After Kenji left, Cassandra went to her daughter's room. She sat on her daughter's bed and looked at her peacefully resting. There were tears in the corners of her eyes. "Oh my little flower," she softly cries, flashing a sad smile. "I thought I should grow you with thorns so no one would hurt you. I've forgotten that you can also hurt yourself. Despite that, you have hurt the one you love too. "I am very disappointed in you for hurting someone who truly loved you. I guess you took over from your father. I guess it's my fault too for cutting off your wings. I am truly sorry, Hayley." Cassandra sniffled, wiping her tears gracefully. "Get well soon, my love. Let's hopefully bring back the times we missed because of my fears." After kissing her daughter's cheek, she left the room for her little love to rest. Just as she predicted, her daughter did hurt Kenji and she didn't have to do anything... nothing at all. "This is for the best,"
