Chapter 50: Sarah

I woke up with a start, my mind foggy as I tried to make sense of where I was. Bits and pieces of yesterday's event floated beneath my sleep-laden brain. I recalled vaguely Lucas’ angry face, Lisa driving me home and tucking me into bed. The sound of a phone ringing.

I rubbed my hand against my eyes, squinting against the dim light as I looked around. I realized I was in my room, lying beside my mother. She looked peaceful in her sleep except for the deep frown sprouting on her face.

I sat up, stretching my upper body, trying to shake off the haze. My eyes still resting on her. Slowly, her frown deepened and she mumbled something. I couldn't catch what she said.

I pulled my ear close to her mouth. She twitched, her hands flaring mid-air like she was fighting someone off.

“Wake up,” I panicked, shaking her roughly. “Wake up.”

She stirred and her eyes fluttered open.

"Sarah?" she whispered, her voice weak. I pulled my hand quickly, tucking it behind my back.
