Five Years Later
Sarah I stood in the living room taking in the breathtaking view of the ocean below my penthouse. Watching the waves rise and fall has been part of my morning ritual for the past five years. It was beautiful to see and the sight never gets old. I moved around the room, clad in nothing as the morning sun teased my pale skin. A soft sigh escaped my lips. I need to go out more often, I subconsciously reprimanded myself. It would be good for my social life—not that I needed one. I paused as my eyes caught my reflection on the window glass, which replaced a section of the wall. My long, wavy hair was packed into a messy bun, accentuating my high cheekbones. My skin looked pale under the bright light. I strolled over to the fridge and pried it open. A plate of half-eaten salad stared at me gloomily. My eating habits were bad and needed to be addressed. I made a mental note to stop at the grocery store after my gym session. Which will entail letting my assistant, Valeria know that I would be coming to the office late. Valeria was a chubby, funny girl who had worked for me since I came to this foreign land. People misjudged her as a pushover because of her friendly demeanour. But little did they know, they were far from the truth. Valeria would tackle the strongest warrior of the clan with her wits. I smiled at the thought of her pretty face morphing into a frown when I called her to postpone all my appointments for this morning. My phone rang, startling me for a second. But the name on the caller ID made my heartbeat pick up a notch. "Have you missed me?" The voice I have learnt to love yet despise spoke from the other end of the phone. "Have you?" I threw the question back at him. His voracious laughter filtered through the phone and a sweet tingle ran down my body, settling between my legs. "You know the answer to that question, pretty one. If you would just give me a chance to show you how much I've missed you. And how much I still want you after all these years." "You know where to find me, Lucas," I teased, wanting to feel desired. After my miscarriage, Lucas provided me with a home and a pack. We had argued over the debt I owed him but in the end, his need to destroy Ryder was stronger than his bodily need. I knew I didn't love him and never would—not after Ryder’s act. My heart was closed off to love. Though I've had flings every now and then. I was also aware that I'm indebted to Lucas for taking me in. It felt normal to fight my sexual attraction towards Lucas. He had arranged for me to move far away from the realm to keep me off the radar and help me get ready for when the time was right to strike. Deep down, I figured he needed to keep me at a distance to protect himself. And I teased him mercilessly about it. "You're right about that. I do know where to find you," he continued, pulling a smile from my lips. "But that's not the reason I called you. It's time Sarah." I felt my hand tremble lightly. For five years I have waited patiently to hear these words. Now hearing it, a shiver replaced the tingling sensation I had felt. I knew he was talking about the one thing I craved like air. It was time to ruin the person that haunted my dreams—Ryder. I cleared my throat. "Why now?" "Because it is the right time," his voice had dropped a notch, almost cold. "Are you having cold feet, Sarah Willow?" The mere thought of Ryder made my blood boil with rage. I would love nothing more than to see him lose everything he held dear. Ever since I left the realm, Lucas had made certain that there had been no mention of Ryder or any information regarding him spoken to my hearing. The silence prolonged between us. I could hear him breathing loudly over the phone. "Sarah?" "I'm right here." "You haven't answered my question." I paced the room with my hand running through my hair. "I haven't got cold feet. I want to pay him back for every ounce of pain he inflicted on me. I want to watch him suffer and beg at my feet." I paused, taking deep breaths to ease my anger. I could almost picture Lucas sprouting a smile. The thought of destroying Ryder always made his body flush with excitement. "But I'm not going in blind," I continued, not giving him a chance to talk. "If you say this is the right time, I need to know why. Did you do something to him... or his son?" I held my breath as Lucas burst out in laughter. Why do I care? I wanted him to suffer but to what extent am I willing to go? Why is my heart beating fast at the thought of him dead? "No, no, Cherié," he chuckled. "I would let you have the honours. I'm not the monster they have painted me to be." He cleared his throat. "A good portion of his company shares went up for sale recently and I so graciously acquired them. I had to pay double the price to get it in your name, as a silent investor. A lot of effort was put into keeping your name under wraps. He won't know what hit him." I sighed loudly as relief washed over me. This was way better than I had expected. My eyes lit up with excitement. "This is what I've been waiting for. Time to take everything from him, right under his nose." "I need you back here as soon as possible. The wheels are already in motion." "I'll round up my business over here and dismiss my staff. I've to let Valeria know--" "That won't be necessary," he spoke, cutting me short. "She has been duly informed and everything is been set in place. She will be leaving with you." "What? Valeria? How do you kno-- Never mind. I'll be over there within the shortest of time." "Can't wait." The dailtone sounded flat in my ears. I looked around the room, trying to connect with the shell I had lived in for the past five years. I felt nothing. I was going to miss nothing except the view of the ocean. I knew what needed to be done. I picked up my phone and dialled Valeria.Ryder “Have you gotten the call from Regan?” I spoke as my fingers tapped on the mahogany desk in my office. “Not yet. I haven't been able to get through to him. My calls are always been redirected to his secretary.” Trevor spoke without taking his eyes off the stack of papers in his hand. “I'll keep trying. You have nothing to worry about.” I turned my gaze at Trevor, baffled and annoyed at how calm and collected he was at the moment. He raised his eyes and caught my glaring eyes. “All I'm trying to do right now is to make sure you're calm and not worked up. You wouldn't want to make hasty decisions right now because you feel backed into a corner. He might just be testing you, to see if you would crack.” Trevor was right. I needed to think not react. I looked across my office. It was situated on the topmost floor of the SC Atlantic Enterprise building. The windows were large, giving me a massive view of my city. I slumped into my chair, feeling drained before the day start
SarahI had my bags packed and arranged by the door. It was a small assembly of suitcases, mostly boasting of my multiple gym wear and fighting gear. After my ordeal with the miscarriage, I had learnt to treat my body as a temple. Though, going to the gym helped me focus, its main reason was to release some of the rage buried within me.“Ms Sarah, the driver has arrived,” Valeria called from behind the door, her face flushed from the cold.“I'm all set,” I motioned to the suitcases as I walked past her. “Tell them to be careful with my boxes. I've some valuables stored in them.”The wind outside was bitterly cold. I hugged my coat tighter around my body as I walked towards the black sedan parked by the side of the road.It was in moments like this that the feeling of emptiness washed over me. It's been years and my wolf has been lost to me. Nothing seemed to work. She was gone forever and I miss her terribly,I was wolfless in a community filled with wolves. I worked harder than the a
Sarah My eyes widen, taken aback by his reaction. Lucas was known across the realm for his ruthlessness. But he has never raised his voice at me. Not once. “What does it look like?” I said, still shocked by how fast he switched up. “I was returning the gesture.” He arched his brow. “Which I find very strange. You would never welcome me with open hands. Not you, Sarah.” Lucas wasn't entirely wrong; I had my selfish reasons. If he thinks that I was playing along—which I was doing, willingly—he wouldn't be so anxious to spy on me. Nevertheless, kissing him hadn't been as bad as I’d imagined and I might be tempted to try again. No, I wouldn't. It might send the wrong signals and make things between us uncomfortable. I knew what I was doing being flirtatious over the phone but right now, I have taken things too far. “You're right,” I chided myself. “That's unlike me. Do you need me to apologize?” “No. Never.” His eyes had lost their hardness when they settled on me again.
Ryder I sat on the edge of the bed. My fingers were lost in Alim’s mop of black hair. Strands of curly hair fell across his face, as he lay on the bed, eyes shut to the world. The silence in the room was temporarily punctured by his soft breathing. I've been told he takes after me. His eyes were the same shade of blue as mine. He has the strength of wolves ten years older than him. He was growing up to be a strong leader. I stared at his face and guilt washed over me. I haven't been paying attention to him. I came back home way past his bedtime and left the house before the sun was up. I needed to make time for my son. This business with Reagan needed to be over so I could get back to my life and son. The thought of speaking to Alexis about her attitude towards Alim crossed my mind. But I quickly dismissed it. It was useless. It was like talking to a brick wall. Alexis had never taken any interest in the boy. After his birth, she had handed him over to the wet nurse and
Sarah The parking lot was closed off to the road. I sat in the backseat, feeling out of sorts as Robert, my bodyguard, who was also acting as my driver maneuvered the car into the empty space. The journey down to this building had been emotionally draining. The sights brought back memories of my childhood. And bittersweet memories of my existence as Luna. “Are you alright back there, ma?” he asked. I smiled at the back of his head. I knew he could see my reflection in the mirror. Robert Harting but ‘Rob’ to his friends was a bear of a man. Though he was a ruthless warrior just like his master. He had fought side by side with Lucas and had retired from active battles after an injury on his right leg. Now, he’s one of Lucas’ trusted guards. I had taken a liking to him the moment we first met. He knew how to tell a joke and take one too. Lucas had assigned Rob to me as my bodyguard after my ordeal at the hospital five years ago. But when I had left the pack, Rob wouldn't follow m
Ryder Something felt different. My wolf senses were all over the place. Which made my wolf restless, beneath my skin. The guard let me through the building and people greeted me as I walked past. I had made plans for today. But only two on the list were my topmost priorities; get over this meeting and spend quality time with my son. Dennis, my ever-present bodyguard, walked at a distance, leaving me to my thoughts. My conversation with Alexis this morning hadn't been pleasant. She seemed not to be bothered about her son. She wouldn’t give two cents if he fell right in front of her, except it benefitted her. **** “You're his father. Do whatever you will. I did my part, I gave you an heir. Something the ‘so-called love of your life’ failed to do. I should be worshipped for that, not treated like a pauper and asked to babysit.” Alexis spat out, her face contorted into something hideous. “Alim is your responsibility. Don't put that on me.” “You're not babysitting anyone.
SarahThe summer was in full bloom and the air was filled with scattered pollen from blooming flowers and fragrance. Street shops were bursting with flowers, different colours and shapes. But that wasn't the reason for my excitement. My wolf had woken me early with her excitement. I was to be mated today. And the moon goddess had decided to bless me with the perfect day.A red moon was expected today, which meant, the alpha would have his transitioning ceremony. It threw the whole pack into a celebratory mood. Not me. I was solely focused on satisfying the heat between my legs. The thought of meeting my mate today made me giggly and act like a love-struck child.I felt over the moon. Nothing could ruin my day. Or so I thought. Till a car ran through, soiling my dress with the pool of muddy water on the road.I stared at the dress till tears blurred my vision. It had taken me a month's wages to buy this dress. My father had offered no assistance. “You don't need that. You're already p
Sarah “Me!? Are you sure you have the right name? I've no business with the council of elders.” “I'm not here to provide you with answers to the questions you may have. I'm nothing but a messenger.” “Well then,” Lucas interrupted, pulling his weight up. “Introduce yourself, servant.” “Tomorrow is the date,” the man continued, speaking fast, not introducing himself or acknowledging Lucas’ presence. “They will be expecting you. Here,” he stretched out his hand, revealing a small scroll. “All you need to know has been written down. Speedy recovery.” “What does the council want with me?” I threw my question at his retreating figure. He ignored my question, leaving the same way he had arrived. I threw a questioning look at Lucas, baffled at the whole interaction. He shrugged. “I've no clue what that was all about.” He took the scroll from my hand and pried it open. “It says here that ‘the house of cards has requested your humble present, Sarah Willow, tomorrow at dawn. A dri
