Lunnette's POV

The crisp evening air wrapped around us as Alpha Cormac and I strolled side by side through the forest trails surrounding the pack estate, the breeze carrying the scent of pine and earth. The towering trees whispered in that wind, their branches casting long shadows under the waning sunlight.

The weight of the day and the proposal from earlier still weighed on me, heavy on me; I couldn't really wrap my head around it, and yet being beside him felt grounding, so it didn't seem like too much happened to me.

Alpha Cormac walked a step ahead, his stride confident but unhurried. He looked to me often, his eyes lingering over my skin, watching me like I was all that mattered.

He had always carried himself with an ease that made his power evident, but tonight, though, his silence unnerved me.

I stole glances at him, hoping to read his thoughts, even from his face, but his sharp features gave nothing away; they remained mostly blank with the occasional smile.

He wasn’t a man

Lunette's POV The ring still glimmered on my finger like a piece of stolen moonlight; the weight of the ring felt heavier than it looked. I turned it this way and that, watching how the light caught on its smooth edges.Alpha Cormac had left only moments ago; I looked up again, but his powerful frame had already disappeared down the hallway. I closed the door gently, leaning against it for a moment to catch my bearings and my breath. The room was still, the only sound the soft rustle sounds of my socks sliding against the floor. I leaned against the door for a moment, trying to process the whirlwind of the evening. My heart was still racing from his presence, and I shook my head to clear the muddled thoughts swimming in my mind. But before I could even take a breath, the door was pushed open with enough force to make me stumble back. “Cormac?” I gasped, my eyes flying up to meet his. He stood there, leaning against the doorway, filling it with his undeniable presence, a predatory

Zarek PoV The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a blade, so that, and the fact that my wolf was not happy in the slightest continuing to growl in my chest, the sound rattling around in my ribcage and setting my teeth on edge. Axel’s words, though they echoed in my mind, did nothing to drown out the way I was feeling.I should have listened to him; my brother always had a point, even when I tended to be hotheaded, but I wasn't willing to listen to his words of reason, not when it felt like my heart was being shredded into so many pieces. Axel didn’t understand—it was selfish of me to say because I knew it hurt him as much, but seeing Lunette standing so close to my father, it had hurt me more than I had ever thought it would, and they had been together for weeks, but the engagement made it seem closer than it was. My father. I loved my father; he was the man who had raised me after our mother died. He had been absent, but he tried his best to care for us and give us

Lunette POV"I have forgiven you," I said, pushing him away from me as I pulled back myself. This garden was supposed to be my sanctuary, but with the way it was being invaded, it seemed I would have to find somewhere else to serve that purpose. I had come here to think, to breathe, but that tranquility had shattered the moment I heard the heavy thud of boots against the cobblestones on the garden path.I hadn’t needed to turn around to know it was Zarek; I could feel his rage from across the garden; his presence was as undeniable as a thunderstorm, or maybe that was just me being sensitive. Now he stood there asking me why I had not chosen him and Axel like it wasn't as obvious as the blue sky above us.His gaze swept over me, and I swallowed. I was sure he had not meant it to get any sort of reaction from me, but it filled my stomach with heat. His eyes stopped just short of where his father’s scent sti

Lunette's POV I couldn’t shake the weight of guilt pressing over my chest that made it feel like I was about to suffocate right there and then; it had been hours since Zarek had walked away from me.Hours since I had sat down in that garden and watched him leave and made up my mind to walk away from him. The image of his defeated expression, his eyes a golden hue almost like his father's, had clouded with hurt, replaying over and over in my mind.Zarek didn’t deserve what I had done to him earlier that day. He didn’t deserve that pain; none of us did. His pained expression, the silent pleading in his eyes, haunted me relentlessly, but choices had been made, and now we had to live with it. So, here I was—caught in a whirlwind of emotions that I didn’t know how to navigate that seemed to be my life day in and day out. With each day I spent here, it made me feel like my heart was being torn apart.I was split between duty and desire; the bond I shared with each of them didn't help me

Axel POV I paced the length of my bedroom, feeling like the walls were closing in tighter and tighter with each and every second. The suffocating silence weighed on me heavier than usual. Zarek’s words replayed in my mind, and so did mine, the same empty reassurances I had offered a mere twenty-four hours ago; now they felt hollow, like a bottle filled with air."We’ll find a way," I had told him, my voice steadier than it had any right to be. "It’s not over." But it was over, wasn’t it? Lunette wasn’t ours anymore; that was now a fact. She had made that clear yesterday. Maybe it was because I had given him hope that I tried to cling to it myself, but I wasn't sure I was any better off than he was. How could I convince him of something I didn’t believe myself? How could I tell Zarek to hold it together when I felt like I was unraveling? A sharp laugh escaped me, and I clenched my fists, nails biting into my palms, fighting instincts that screamed at me to do something.I slamme

Axel’s POVThe bottle of whiskey felt heavy in my hand, the amber liquid sloshing as I took another swig. The whiskey burned as it slid down my throat, lighting a trail of fire all the way to my stomach. I barely flinched anymore at the taste or the burn; with the bottle in hand, I stumbled through the dimly lit hallway of the pack house, my head spinning. How many had I had so far? Two? Three? No, it had to be more. I didn’t care. It wasn’t enough anyway. My father’s words echoed in my skull, louder than the pounding of my heartbeat.“You heard me; this is your fault, and instead of accepting it, you're throwing a tantrum and wasting valuable time.” his tone that had been neither smug nor cruel, I remembered the way he looked at me like he was disappointed i

Lunette's POV The house felt quieter than usual, but it wasn’t actually a peaceful quiet; that was me trying to block out everything happening in the outside world. It wasn't really helping, though, not when the air was heavy and suffocating, making the air hard to breathe. I was trying to keep my hands busy; I was scrubbing down the last of the kitchen counters, though I’d already wiped it three times today. The maid that Mrs. Harlow had gotten kept frowning up at me like she couldn't understand what was happening exactly. I didn't blame her too, not when even I couldn't explain if I was asked to; all I knew was it kept me occupied and served as a distraction from the whispers that floated through the pack. Axel was drinking again. It wasn’t like I didn’t know he was; I was sure by now everyone knew he was drinking. The binging sprees were hard to miss—what with the sour scent of alcohol lingering in the halls whenever he passed by or the lingering bottles that were scattered a

Lunette POVI should have left the room immediately I put him to bed, but I didn't; the dimly lit room lured me into a fantasy, with the soft glow of the bedside lamp casting warm shadows across Axel’s face.Axel's room was quiet, save for the occasional creak of the old wood beneath my shifting feet; the faint scent of him lingered in the air, mixing with the sharp tang of alcohol.I stood near the door, watching him sit on the edge of his bed, his head bowed, his broad shoulders slumped with the blanket I had draped over him earlier, its edges hanging loosely around his frame, slipping slightly. His broad frame looked smaller somehow, weighed down by exhaustion and whatever demons had driven him to drink tonight."I want to shower," he mumbled all of a sudden, catching me off guard.I nodded."Ok.""I'll leave you," I whispered and stood from the bed; he gestured to me to help

Lunette POV The moment that Varda fired that bolt I had been sure it would hit Axel. So sure in fact that the world had slowed around me, my breath caught in my throat as I braced for the worst. But then Lorraine had stepped in. While she quarreled with her mother all I could feel was relief—until Varda struck again, until I saw the bright red blood spreading across her clothes as she crumpled to the floor. Varda had tried to kill her own daughter. For a second, all I could do was stare. I stood frozen, watching in horror as Axel caught Lorraine before she hit the dirt. Lorraine’s body trembled, her hands pressing against the wound, her lips parted in shock. Varda turned back to Axel but before I could react, Zarek moved. A low, guttural growl ripped from his throat as his body twisted and grew, his Lycan form bursting free. He lunged at Varda, his teeth bared in a snarl. Varda barely had time to turn before his fangs sank deep into her neck. Her scream was cut off as he to

Zarek POV They attacked us first, or they tried to anyway, after our escape we made plans to draw them out, it would be the best way to even our playing field and she was pissed when she discovered we were missing. She had brought her men in immediately,"Kill them all!" She roared and the battle that followed afterwards was pure chaos. Snarls and screams filled the night air as blood soaked the dirt beneath my feet. My muscles burned, but I couldn’t stop. Not now. Not until Varda was dead. The Lycan curse poured through my veins like fire, pain following it and pushing me past my limits. My body twisted, the monstrous power within me taking over. My claws lengthened, my teeth sharpened, and a guttural roar tore from my throat. Varda’s men hesitated at the sight of me. Good. They should be afraid. With a single leap, I tore into the nearest warrior, my claws ripping through armor and flesh like paper. The scent of blood thickened in the air as another wolf lunged at me his

Axel POV The weight of Curtis’s death still hung heavy in the air, but we had no time to grieve. The dungeon might have been cold and suffocating, but the fire of rage burning inside me made it bearable. We had to escape, and we had to bring Varda down. Zarek sat against the wall, arms crossed, jaw clenched. He hadn’t spoken much since Curtis died. I could see the storm brewing inside him, the need for vengeance, for blood. I felt it too, and it wasn't just the curse, to know that our mother had died at the hands of such a man. But Lunette—Lunette was different. She stood between us, but she didn’t cry anymore, the tears from earlier seemed to have dried up. "We have to kill her." Zarek hissed and shook his head "No." “We have to be smart,” he continued, voice steady. “We can’t just rush into a fight. Varda is dangerous. If we attack without a plan, we’ll lose.” “She killed our mother,” he growled, his voice raw. "She killed our father. She has to pay for it.” Lunette,

Lunette POV I couldn’t move, I couldn’t breathe. To have Varda standing before me, tall and proud no hint of remorse in her eyes, her golden hair catching the flickering light of the candle in the cabin we had run to, and her eyes gleamed with satisfaction as she looked down at me, at all of us. "You look surprised, darling." She purred, stepping closer, the scent of death clung to her, or was that Curtis blood pooling over the floor making my stomach churn. "Surely, you knew this day would come." I shook my head, willing myself to speak, but nothing came out. “Where’s Alpha Slade?” Axel asked, his voice low and dangerous. His hands curled into fists at his sides, barely restrained fury radiating off him. "He has to know that this won't end well for him." Varda sighed dramatically. “He's outlived his usefulness honestly it was such a burden waiting for him to kick the bucket" My father… dead? My legs nearly gave out, and I staggered back. “No,” I whispered, my voice ba

Axel’s POVThe council chambers were suffocating me, and Lorraine standing beside me was not doing me any favors to be honest, her face composed but I saw the glint in her eyes. She had me wrapped around her fingers and the council was helping her squeeze. They had all but declared, Lunette, Curtis and Zarek traitors to the pack. “We cannot allow them to run free,” Lorraine said, her voice dripping with false concern."If Zarek and Lunette are left unchecked, they’ll bring ruin to Grey Moon. We have to act before it’s too late.” I clenched my fists at my sides, barely containing my anger because I knew she didn’t care about the pack, only her own ambitions but her performance was flawless and the council bought it, murmuring their agreement,“Alpha Axel,” elder Fred addressed me. "You must send your soldiers to apprehend them. For the good of the pack.” I had gotten used to those words over the last few days, even more than I had gotten used to my own father's death. Maybe it wa

Varda POV I heard the news about Alpha Cormac's deathly injury, while I was cleaning up my new room, it had been one of the best news I had in a very long while.I knew it was time. When I had sent the assassins to finish off Lunette, it had never occured to me that I would catch bigger fish in my endeavor. The alpha Cormac, the biggest alpha om our coast and the most respected, it was a coup. A storm of satisfaction had spread through me, filling me, this was good. I needed this chance now, cold determination settled over me as I leaned back in the ornate chair in Slade's–my study now. The Grey Moon pack was vulnerable. Their leadership in shambles this was the time for me to get more than I had wanted with the chaos that was no doubt already starting to spread. I had my opening. And while Lunette wasn't dead yet, that wasn't something I couldn't solve later.Lunette. The name was a bitter taste on my tongue, that little brat was a thorn in my side. She was a loose thread, the la

Zarek POV "Have you lost your mind?” I snarled, at my brother my voice low and dangerous.“You think locking Lunette up is going to solve anything? She didn’t kill Father, Axel.” The tension in the room was suffocating and I really didn't need to be pissed, Axel stood at the head of his table, his arms crossed over his chest, his jaw set tight, I stood across from him bracing my hands on the surface of the table, it was barely enough to keep myself from reaching across and shaking some sense into him. “I didn’t say she did. But until we know for sure who’s behind this, I can’t take any chances.” “Chances?” I barked, slamming my fist on the table.“You’re not just taking a chance, you’re condemning her. The council will see this as an admission of guilt. Do you understand what you’re doing?” Axel’s lips pressed into a thin line. “What I understand is that the council is already breathing down my neck. If I don’t handle this carefully, we risk losing everything.” “Losing wha

Lunette POV My whole body ached from hours of training with Zarek, each and every muscle group screamed in protest as I settled into the chair beside Alpha Cormac’s bed. With the room dimly lit, the only light coming from the faint glow of the monitors tracking his vitals. The steady beeping was oddly comforting, I could at least hold on to the fact he was still with us. I watched him breath in and out guilt gnawing at my insides. He looked a bit better today, not so pale, maybe soon he would wake up. He had nearly died protecting me. He shouldn’t have risked himself for someone like me. I slumped into the chair by Alpha Cormac’s bed and I told myself I’d only rest my eyes for a moment, just long enough to catch my breath. “I’ll make it right,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I’ll find a way to fix this, to protect your pack... your family.” But the steady rhythm of the machines and the quiet hum of the room lulled me into sleep.I didn’t even realize when my eyes closed,

Lorraine’s POVIt was dark outside and quiet wrapped around the pack house like a shroud, it had never been this quiet in a long time the stillness was broken only by the occasional creak of the old walls or the distant howl of a wolf. This was a perfect time for what I had to do, it was the perfect cover.I slipped through the hallways, keeping my footsteps as silent against the wooden floors as possible, my heart pounded in my chest, but it was not from fear. No, this wasn’t fear. This was anticipation. Alpha Cormac’s injury had given me the perfect opening because now with him bedridden and Zarek too preoccupied with training that brat girl Lunette, Axel was the only one fit to step up as acting Alpha. And if Axel became Alpha, well... I would ensure that I was by his side as Luna. It was time to act. Time to turn the chaos to my advantage, meaning there was no room for error tonight. I tightened my grip on the small syringe hidden in my sleeve. The attack had been... unex
