The portal took us to an empty gravel road in the middle of a forest filled with all sorts of beautiful trees that I had never seen on the human plane. Some had silver leaves while others trunks were deep red with pink leaves and those were just the ones that stood out near the gate.
"Keep walking. We are behind schedule." Jarek grumbled putting his hand on my lower back and pulling me with him. "There is only three entrances to the school. This is the most used one since it brings you closest to the school and takes you straight to the universal portal so you can head home on leave and such."
I nodded my head and did my best to keep up with them. Both of them had longer legs than I did so my stride was more of a jog. Neither seemed to notice I was struggling.
The school came into sight and it looked like a regular human university with a few tall brick buildings, a huge sports field, and a few different dorms. Dorms that I would have to share with another female unless they were co-ed which meant I would have to deal with a smelly man who would want me to act like his mommy. I saw that enough when one of the girls back home moved a guy into their tent. I broke up one too many fights dealing with that crap.
"I will drop your dog off at the doctor’s office. They know we are coming." Ajax stated lifting Freya into a more comfortable position. "and Jarek will take you to meet you grandpa."
I stopped, staring at them both with a blank stare. "Whoever gave you the idea that I would willing be separated from Freya especially since she is injured? I’ll go with her and when she is better I will pencil in this so called gramps I have."
"No, that is not how we have it planned out." Jarek argued making a grab for my arm but missing as I yanked it out of range.
Slipping my hand down to my pockets my hand found my pocketknife. I pulled it out and flipped it open close enough to be able to draw blood for either of them regardless of if one held my baby. This wouldn’t be my first time drawing blood nor the last.
"Size isn't always a factor. Knowing where to make you bleed out the fastest with the smallest of cuts has always been better knowledge for myself.” I seethed at them begging of them to screw up and get closer. “Or how to make the bleeding take hours but the pain be so excruciating that you will beg for me to finish you off.”
"OK, ok. Calm down. We will all go to the doctors. We can decide what happens after getting Freya fixed up." Ajax pushed past us picking up his pace keeping a few feet of distance between us.
I did my best to keep up with him but enough distance so I didn't run into him or touch him at all. That weird feeling from earlier had already sent my head into a freak out. After spending most evenings trading or working at the supernatural black market I heard a lot of gossip and sups talk. The only thing that came close to explaining that feeling and my brain feeling cloudy or foggy was something called mates. After the few stories I heard I knew I never wanted one so this was a whole new territory. Maybe I was wrong. He wasn't trying to get in my pants or order me around like the stories suggested.
"Open the door, please." Ajax had stopped keeping his eyes on the closed double doors.
"Whoops, my bad." Moving around him careful not to touch him I opened the doors and kept my pace with his as we passed several doors and what looked like nurses.
The building was starch white with green and red being the main colors used for signs, maps, and such. It seemed they treated every kind of supernatural there was if I went. We rushed passed a half shifted dragon with a bloody towel around their arms, a witch with boils down her arm, and a vampire girl complaining about something to do with green slimey stuff on her after a run in with another student.
We finally reached the last set of doors but this time they were open with two workers waiting for us. They took Freya from Ajax and went inside without a word. The doors shut behind them quicker than I had anticipated and locked behind them.
Yanking on the door handles without them budging I could feel my anger and frustration from being separated rising. It didn’t rise and make me rage out instead it flowed to my core giving me this weird swirly feeling in the pit of my stomach. It pushed power throughout my body making each time I yanked easier and easier.
"Hey, calm down. They know what they are doing." Jarek stated worriedly before pointing at the seat next to me. "Take a load off and wait."
"No!" I yanked on the door again. "Somebody better open this damn door before I break it down!"
The door swung open almost throwing me on my ass. It revealed a green, thin goblin dressed in an almost too big doctor’s jacket. His coat was covering most of the floor behind him as he held the door open with a smile. He looked a bit like a cartoon frog with the big white teeth and long chicken legs.
"Hello, Emersyn. Let's get you back to your girl." He waved his head toward the door opening. "I am Dr. Blat. Maybe you can help us keep her calm. She has been giving my nurses a run for their money."
It didn't take any more convincing to trust him before I was running to the back listening for my bestie. 'Freya! Howl for me buddy.'
She heard me. She started letting out one of her low whine howls that hurt your ears but broke your heart at the same time. She only used it when she was in pain or scared which neither happened very often. I should have done better this morning or that Ajax butt head could have come down to help before we ended up on the ground. 'I'm coming baby.'Running into the room I last heard her howl, my survival instincts went into overdrive. Two nurses were holding my baby down while another was trying to use a syringe full of orange medicine on her. All of them were looking pissed and a bit warn out from the struggle. They way they were speaking to her made me want to rip their heads off."Get the hell away from my dog before I break all the bones in your hands." Freya’s eyes landed on me filling with a sense of relief and exhaustion. They stared at me before giving each other a look. Already knowing they were going to continue to do their job so it was up to me to get them to lay off and
Dr. Blat finished his healing magic having Freya looking almost brand new. Her internal bleeding was fixed, and he even took out the metal pins that I couldn’t get when she got hit with a metal net a year ago. The guys wanted to ask questions but they were in enough trouble so they kept their mouths shut. “So two mates? I have heard of a few powerful magical beings have a few mates, but it is rare.” Dr. Blat finally commented looking at me curiously. “I bet when your powers are unlocked fully you will be one of the strongest here. I wonder if you will have more mates?” “No!” We all shouted in return. The guys pulled Dr. Blat aside to talk but I wasn’t interested in their conversation. It was either about what to do about multiple mates or something about me. I was more interested in Freya who had begun to wake up. I slid my hand down her spine dragging my nails like she liked. Her body stretched getting all the kinks out before relaxing against me. She was so fluffy the weight of
"Can I help you?" A female hissed from the desk beside another set of doors. " Dean Fenix doesn’t have any appointments on his schedule for this morning."“He will want to see her.” Ajax stated taking a seat in the little attached waiting room.“Her who?” She rolled her eyes before they landed on me. “What do you want?”"Oh ummm Hello. I was brought here to talk to Dean Fenix by these two." I put my hands in my pockets unsure of what to do with them or say to this stranger who was eyeballing me like I had sat in shit before coming in here. "Could you just let him know I am here?""And who are you?" She sneered. "Sy-Emersyn, his granddaughter?" It came out sounding like a question but I still didn't believe it myself. I couldn’t expect them too."Bullshit. He lost his son years ago and hasn't mentioned any other family." She grabbed her phone and started dialing. "I am calling security to get your filthy ass out of here. Ajax, Jarek, you two know better."She turned to face her comput
The food was amazing. The company kinda sucked. Ajax and Jarek had explained the mate thing to Wilder which had me congratulating them. Like it was something to be happy about but so far all they showed me was I wasn’t as important as the bond was. I just stayed quiet and let them bond over something that I would never give in too with these two knuckle heads.“So, Emmersyn, has the mate tattoos showed up yet?” Wilder smiled as he took his seat beside me again. He had been explaining how he had gotten so many books and where he found some of the more ancient volumes that had caught my eye.“Mate tattoos? What the heck is that?” I hadn’t ever heard of that. In the human realm it was mostly mating bonds between shifters and such. It involved a bite or something that leaves a mark where they get snacked on.“Yea. Once you find your mate and accept that they are your mate the bonding starts. The tattoo is the first step.” He rolled his sleeve up showing off a beautiful vine tattoo that st
The uncomfortable skin tingles that made me want to scratch my skin off began as Jarek moved to sit back on the couch. Fighting to control it I got up keeping my gaze on anything but him. This couldn’t be normal. Would be away from him cause this?Jarek’s jerky movements as his eyes locked onto me made me feel better. Knowing I wasn’t the only one feeling this made it easier to fight. Ajax and him had made it back to the couch one with a scowl on his face and the other full of wonder."Am I winning some points for my honesty?" Wilder smiled lighting up his face sending me back in time to when my dad used to smile at me."Yea, for now." Smiling back at him catching Ajax go frozen at the sight of it. "So what is this danger we are talking about? More of those trolls trying to take me out?"He gave a short laugh before his face got serious. "Do you know why your parents were killed?""No and the police never found anything that could solve it." “Your parents were mates and bonded so fas
"Thump." A loud crash sounds off from somewhere close. Someone, no, two someone’s arguing.I'm awake but still, keeping my breathing even. Looking over at Freya, my best friend and a big fluffy mutt, to see her teeth silently bared and her eyes hyper focused on the door. Well, what you would call a door on a makeshift shed that I built out of found things like cardboard boxes, left over pieces of wood, broken furniture small enough I could cart back here."Shut up. She might wake up." One of them demanded in a harsh whisper. "They said she was a fighter. I can’t believe someone named Emmersyn can do anything but read us to death.""Her trash pit of a house is fucking tiny. There is no way she could take one of us on." The other mocked.Rage rising I wanted to jump out and kick their asses for being so judgmental on my home and my size but I knew better. If there was two there was probably more. Freya's leg was still healing from a stab wound from a few days ago at the underground mark
I jumped and turned to see a breathtaking man with short jet back hair that looked like he styled it with his fingers. I had to crane my neck up to see his face but it was worth it. This man was not from around here with this big muscles, wide shoulders, and fire red eyes. Feeling drool start to pool in my mouth I wiped my head around and started searching for Freya."Freya?" I shouted my voice sounding shrill. No sounds came back. "Freya? Where are you?""Is this the Hellhound that stays by your side day and night?" He grabbed me under my arms and lifted me like I was a rag doll. "Is she injured?""Well, duh, hot shot. Not sure on the actual hellhound thing but she is almost indestructible." I snarked pushing his arms away. "Thanks for taking out the brother but I have it from here. I would rather you explain how you know my name while I find my dog."Stepping away from him I started moving anything that might be hiding his body. I had no one to pray to or I would be begging for help
"Emmersyn, this is Jarek." Ajax stated interrupting my saddened thoughts.I looked up and saw a red haired freckled gorgeous man. He was just as tall as Ajax but with a leaner frame. His smirk let me know he noticed me checking him out. I whipped my head back over to Ajax. He had a matching smirk. Jerks."Be careful with her or Ill skin you alive." I growled slowly standing and grabbing my bag. I was always packed and ready to run. "I need to say my good-byes and then I will be ready."Without waiting I walked over to Rosie's shack she had built from egg cartons and all the plastic she could find. She swore that the Styrofoam and plastic made the best protection from all elements but I disagreed when I saw her ass sweating in the heat this last summer."Rosie?" I knocked lightly. "I need a favor."She poked her cute little head out. She just dyed her short grey hair green and learned to spike it like our friend Ronnie did.
