Aurora woke up in her darkroom as it was dawn and there was no light yet. She switched on the candle beside her bed.
She climbed out of bed and her room was very small and depressing, it was just enough to fit her bed, and a bit of leg space to put a narrow table where her uniform resided.
This was deemed to be more than enough for a female maid, she could not complain as she worked in the palace, as long as she got there on time and well prepped that was all that mattered.
She wondered why she had to be so well prepped when they were the maids and no one saw them as they usually cleaned when the royals were either asleep or having dinner or attending balls and banquets.
She took her soap and sponge, and headed outside, it was cold as per usual but she was still not used to it no matter how many times she did this usual routine.
Aurora took a wooden bucket and went to the well that was a good ten minutes from where she lived. She got to the well and threw the bucket tied to the rope,
She threw it inside and watched it sink, when it became almost full she started to roll the pedal to pull it out, when it finally did she poured the water into her own bucket.
She carried the water back to the bathroom stalls that were situated outside. They were a very small square, which had a wooden door which she closed.
It was very hard to move but she scrubbed herself whilst her teeth were clattering from the cold. She poured the water on herself and she immediately woke up in an instant.
She finished and put back her garment on and headed out back to her room. The candle at least bought a bit of light, she undressed quickly and put on her normal uniform which was a brown plain blouse and an ankle long brown skirt, and long stockings underneath, with black, closed off shoes, this was determined to be prim and proper.
She took a worn-out brush and brushed her hair back, it was red and unruly at times but by now she was used to it and how to deal with it.
She tied it up to around a full bun. She took a can to see how she looked. She was happy with the results as this is how she was supposed to look at all times.
She made her way to the palace it would take a good twenty minutes, not everyone was lucky enough to get a servant's quarters in the palace which made it all the easier.
It was all about who you knew or how you were related, or the ranking of the workers played advantage to them.
With none of those, she was in a pickle. She got on her bicycle and made her way to the palace. The road was a bit bumpy and a bit hard as dawn was breaking.
She gets to the palace gates and she gets off her bicycle, you couldn't just cycle in as it was not proper for one to do so and she had to show them her badge, for her to be allowed in.
When she was cleared she went with her bicycle to the stalls were you could park them. When she had done that, she straightened her uniform and made sure to finish any last touches.
She made her way to the staff kitchen, she was glad that they at least provided her with some bread and tea before they started work.
The room was already booming with chatter and laughter, lucky to those that got there early as they stayed there and the perks of being in the palace's servant quarters was great, hot water was available to them and at times they could eat the leftovers that were left behind by the prestige.
The temperature increased significantly from the cold and cruel weather that she had come from. She could now feel her face a bit.
Her nose was probably red from numbness, they used to laugh her because of that but thank goodness the joke eventually downed down.
She went to go get some tea first as her hands felt frozen from the trip, she took a cup and went to the tea station where they filled her cup and was given a piece of bread.
"Aurora."
She said as they ticked off her name from the list, they only could get one serving each but she knew that the ones who lived in the palace got more as they knew each other and the kitchen staff was often way more giving if you bought them something special such as a hairpin.
She had failed immensely to get a hold of anything worth of value to bribe them so she could get some more.
"Aurora here!"
Aurora went to the table where her friends were seated, she sat down.
"Morning." She greeted them all.
"You look like you froze to death." Ida remarked.
Aurora took a sip from her tea and she burnt herself, "Ouch!"
"You forget every time you drink tea." Ella added.
"It's a shame you have to make it here through this awful forsaken weather." This time it was Lucy.
"It's sad that they can't make all of us stay here. I mean they eat very well, the kings and queens but fail to even give everyone decent living conditions." Agnes said out.
"Keep your voice down, you don't know who might be listening. The palace has eyes and ears everywhere you know." Evelyn said in a hushed tone so that it was only her that could hear.
"It's okay, really." Aurora smiled at her friends, they all lived in the palace but she, it had come down to hard luck.
Not that her luck has ever been up, it was down in the slumps just like her life was. The money earned here was just enough to live by and get necessities.
Things such as eggs and cheese were rare to them and only the rich ate that and only them could they afford such a lavish life.
She took another sip of her tip as it had cooled down a bit. She was grateful for the hot liquid as it was warming her up.
"Maybe a space will open up Aurora and we can all be together." This time it was Barbara.
She was grateful for her friends wanting to help her so much, they finished chatting up and they knew it was time for them to preset the palace.
The lucky ones worked with the cooks and they got a bit of a bite, but the rest of them had sweeping duty and scrubbing the floor which left one aching all over.
She got her broom and headed to the courts and the vigorous work of scrubbing started. She put her back and all her might into it.
The day had already and it was a bit gloomy,
After two hours she was done, and needed to go in and scrub the courts,
"Aurora! Aurora!"
Aurora turned to the voice calling her and it was Cathy, she worked in the kitchen so she wondered what she wanted?
She heaved when she reached her, "You need to come with me urgently." Cathy said between breaths.
Aurora followed her to the palace, she didn't get a chance to ask Cathy what was going on? And why was she wanted?
She got inside and found the head maid standing there, madam Beatrice, she was very scary, she was older and wanted everything done to perfection.
If it wasn't you would be subject to her lashes or worse you lose your only income.
"Morning Madam Beatrice."
Madam Beatrice motioned for Cathy to leave and she did immediately, she wondered if she had done something wrong?
"Aurora, we are in a pickle, I will need you to fill in for Constance, she caught the measles and will not be able to come into work."
"Yes Madam."
It's not like she could refuse the madam after all,
"Follow me Aurora."
Aurora followed her through the palace, and she was trying to remember all the twist and turns but she knew that would not be possible.
They got to the room and the madam stood aside for her to get in, "You will be cleaning this room Aurora, and you have to clean it to perfection."
Aurora nodded, "Yes madam."
"I chose you as I know you work hard,"
"Thank you madam, I will not let you down."
"There is an hour glass which you can use, you have an hour and a half to clean this room as they are eating breakfast currently."
"Yes Madam,"
"I will leave you to it and don't disappoint me Aurora." She could hear her threatening tone and she became a bit afraid.
With that she left, and Aurora turned the hour glass and go to work immediately. She picked up the clothes for laundry, and put them in a dish. She would take them out to be washed.
She made the bed and dusted everything, she swept the floor and made sure everything was clean. Whoever was in this room seemed to be well off, the silk sheets and the garments were made from the best.
When she was done she had a bit of time to spare, she picked up the basket with the dirty laundry, as she was going out the door she bumped into someone.
"My apologies," Aurora bowed her head. She could see the man who was tall and very muscular was trying to see her face but she would not look up as she was not allowed to do so."Wh..............."Aurora's heart beat wildly, he wanted to know her name so that he could make her get dismissed by a single word."Caspian."She saw that his attention was turned to someone else, and she took the chance to slide away very fast,"Douglas." He responded, his voice was rich and she could tell they knew each very well as there was affection and playfulness in their voices."Wait!"She could hear one of them calling out to her but she turned the corner and dashed as fast as she could. She stopped when she was well hidden and she was breathing heavily, she went to search for the laundry room which also took time.Everything was new to her as she had never been in this part of the palace. It was nice to work inside, her hands had callouses from all the hard labor and the only upside to having cold
Dinner time came, and she immediately told her friends of the good news that she had received from the Madam and that they could be together in the servant's quarters."Finally Aurora your luck has been in the slumps for a while now," Evelyn added."You must be serving someone important for them to assign you such duties dedicated to them." Agnes chimed in."I hope you don't leave us behind," Ida added dramatically."Don't get on a horse and sail off to the sunset," Lucy added melodramatically."You all need to stop, the only reason I told you about this is the opportunity that I have to stay in the servant's quarters has finally risen.""Did Madam give you any rules?" Barbara asked."Yes, she said that I belonged to the palace strictly and that I was not allowed to have any relations with men.""Madam needs to loosen up, we all don't want to end up as spinsters such as herself, we all won't be noticed by the king or let alone the prince so why should we bother. We are at the bottom o
Aurora woke up in the morning and she did the same routine that she always did but this time she added extra measures and steps to it and made sure she was dressed to perfection. She was starting her new work today so nothing could go wrong, she would make sure of it. She got on her bicycle and was on her way to the palace. When she got to the palace gates she showed her badge and was let in, she went and parked her bicycle in its usual spot and went into the servant's quarters kitchen. She headed straight to the front to get her cup of tea and roll, she said her name and she was ticked off role call. She scanned the room and saw that Lucy was already waiving at her to come over, she made her way through the tables and she could hear blatant gossip about how she had bribed to get the position that she was in.The irony of all this is that they failed to say it to her face, so they whispered it amongst themselves in low tones but loud enough for her to hear it.She ignored them all and
So these were their names, and what did he mean to play with her? So he was enjoying himself by making her squirm. This was going to be a very long road, she hoped she would not have many encounters with them and specifically Caspian. They were so many activities to do, so why should he waste his time on her and his own very precious time."How old are you Aurora?" Caspian asked."Eighteen My Lord.""Interesting," Caspian replied."If that's all My Lord, could I take my leave?"Caspian was surprised at her question, it was clear that this girl wanted to be anywhere but here. She had rich red hair and her eyes were striking green, they were like emeralds. He had never taken any interest in girls till now, there was something behind her beauty that he was getting drawn into."Not yet." He blurted out.She seemed surprised at his response and rightfully so, he had just instinctively replied to her but he did not know what more he wanted to say to her.She seemed to be trembling for fear,
Aurora went to the laundry room and she was relieved she had managed to dodge a bullet, she thought should be frequenting his bed but when he said he does not force women, she felt the relief course through her body and so profound at that. When she had dropped off the clothes, Aurora was glad that today she had no dishes in the kitchen which meant she could get out of cleaning in there. She had never taken a stroll in the palace and now was her chance to do so, she walked through the pathway, which on either side had long tall trees. The breeze was amazing and she inhaled it, and for once she felt free, stress-free from the daily burdens that she needed to carry. She was a bit sad that this position was not hers forever, not that she wanted Constance to stay ill forever.Maybe one day she would have enough money to build herself a small little cottage where she could live and have no one to bother her.Currently, she could not save much as she had to buy candles, and sometimes the fo
Caspian lay awake in his chambers as he remembered Aurora's eyes, from the encounter that they had.Her surprised at him being so close to her and blushing when he had touched her face fascinated him more and drew her more to him.He didn't know what he wanted from her as her eyes had made his mind go blank and he had gotten lost in them.He had been with beauties before but the way she was so reserved made him want to crush her resilience all the more.He would have his way with her, it was a matter of time before she succumbed to his charm, she was already flustered with a bit of attention from him.The previous maid was more than happy to be in his bed the minute he had set his eyes on her. She frequented his bed when he was willing to entertain her.Yet Aurora had not made a move or given him fake doe eyes or tried to start a conversation, or seduce him at that. This was the first time a girl had not come willingly to him, he could chase her a bit not that he needed to do much.A
Aurora made her way inside, she did her normal balancing and went up to the table and placed the tray there."Your tea My Lord."Her head was bowed as per usual and she started to turn away,"I didn't dismiss you Aurora."She stood very still at his words and hoped she had not offended him in any way with her actions, she stood there anxiously waiting for his next words or command."Is there something wrong with being in my presence?""I apologize, My Lord, I did not mean to insult you.""Talk freely Aurora and set aside rankings.""I could never do such My Lord.""It's an order."Aurora nodded, she was afraid that one wrong word and this would all end badly for her."Lift up your head."Aurora did so immediately, she didn't want to disobey him as she could decipher what he was thinking."Why do you look so worried Aurora?""I am not My......I mean I am not."It felt strange to not address him the way they were taught,"Look at me."Aurora forced her gaze on him, he was really good-lo
Caspian sat in front of his tea, Aurora was definitely something new to him. He wanted to break all her barriers. She fascinated him and he was thinking about her a lot even though he was frequenting other women who were willing to bare it all for him and that was a lot of girls willing to do so.This was a new challenge to him but Douglas was often a very accurate teller, he had said two weeks and he always set a challenge to himself to break the record and he had excelled in it.Most girls would act coy and then during the night, they would come to his room on their own after hours. He thought he had cracked Aurora and as he sat in his bed chambers, she had not come back and that surprised him, he thought she had run away the first time as she was too embarrassed to approach him but even when he did approach her, she had her guard up.He had thought she must have had a suitor or someone who is interested in her and they shared mutual feelings but those suspicions were on the low for
“I want this journey to not end if only we could keep going until we have explored everything.”“That would take a lifetime and even a lifetime is not possible to explore every area.”“That is the whole point Caspian, for this journey to never end.”“I did not think of it that way.”“I have always wanted to go to different places from where I was raised, even our journey back to the palace was a thrill for me as I had not been anywhere besides where I grew up.”“Do you believe that your father might be on the lookout for you?”“No, not all he has never acknowledged my existence and he is not about to start now. If was searching for it would be to execute me as he would have figured out that I helped you escape. I’m probably labelled a disgrace and a traitor.”“I’m sorry that you did this all to help me.”“It wasn’t to only help you Caspian, it was a way out for me, to have the freedom I have always craved and to be away. I was desperate that I would have gone anywhere but stay there,
Caspian had heeded Douglas’s words and he had told Rurina that they would not be stopping until they were in the clear. All he had was faith, and hope that he would find her, he felt sick at the thought of her not being where he thought she was.Only time will tell when he goes to the destination if she is there or not. The day progressed bit by and when noon arrived they were searching for an area where they could eat as they were famished. They stopped by a stream, and the scenery was spectacular, now he could see why Aurora had loved being out here, one did not want to leave. He knew by now that they might be looking for him back at the palace and he hoped that they would believe Douglas. He had left them notes, explaining to them that he needed to breathe as the palace was a bit suffocating for him. He had told his mother she was in charge of making the final decisions until he came back and resumed full authority.“Are you worried about back home?” Rurina asked him.“A bit, I don
Evening came and Caspian lay on his bed, but sleep alluded him. He could not find a sweet spot on the bed. He kept on turning but he was not finding a comfortable position. He was not finding it, he got up and got dressed. He went outside and he went back to the forest path that he walked with Aurora. The moon was full tonight and it cast soft light, the breeze was warm, how he would love to walk with Aurora during this moment, he wanted to share it with her.He remembered her words, as long as they were under the same moon they would find their way back to each other. He stood in the middle of the forest, he would never forget the moment when he had turned and saw Aurora walking down to him.Caspian came to realization that he knew where Aurora might be, why had he not thought of it earlier. He went raced back to his chambers and he took out a scroll, he was going to leave soon to go find her.He prayed that she would be where he thought she was. The next morning Caspian summoned Dou
Caspian waited for Douglas to come with Aurora’s friends, he could not go himself as that would raise a lot of speculation. It might also reach his mother and Nadia’s ear, he heard the door open as Douglas led them in, when they saw him they all seemed to be frightened.“You may leave,” Caspian said to Douglas as he went out.“You all don’t have to be anxious, I did not call you all to berate nor to punish you. I wanted to ask about Aurora, and you all don’t have to keep your heads down, you may look at me.”He could see them lift their heads, and their hands were clasped in front of them,“I wanted to ask if you knew where Aurora might be?”They all shook their heads in unison,“Do you have any idea where she could have gone to?”“No, My Lord, before she left, she was ordered to not speak nor see us.”“Who ordered you to do so?”They all were silent at his question and he knew that they were probably afraid if word got out they would get punished.“You do not have to fear anything,”
Caspian turned and Nadia stood there, “I thought you had retired to your chambers.”“I was waiting for you.”“Is there something worrying you?”“I have been meaning to have a chat about a few things on my mind,” Nadia replied.“Of course.”“Can we do this at your chambers?”“I would rather we go to your chambers.”Nadia seemed to be overjoyed with his suggestion, “I will lead the way then.”They walked in her chambers and he saw that it was different but he really would not know as he spent most of the time at his chambers or at Aurora’s.He sat by the table, and she sat too, “I know we haven’t had much time to ourselves as you have urgent matters to attend to as the king but I was hoping we could bond again.”Caspian was too tired for all this, why could they not discuss it in the morning?“How so?”“We can select activities that we love and we share them with each other,” Nadia replied.“That’s a sound plan.”“Do you have any suggestions?” Caspian could see that she was hopeful, did
Nadia’s parents arrived, and he, Nadia and his mother stood in the forefront as they were being welcomed.“Caspian, we never thought we would see you again.” Nadia’s father held him at arms-length.“It is wonderful to see you again Sir.”“No need for formalities, you are my son and I will make your father proud.”Nadia’s mother came up to him and smiled, “Thank you coming back to Nadia, we do not know what would have happened if you would have not been able to return.”“Thank you, I see who Nadia takes after.”Greetings were exchanged and they all made it to the dining area that was prepared, and mead was served as everyone got comfortable.“Before we all have a drink, I would love to raise a toast to my son Caspian who was given back to us and the time when he was most needed. A toast to Caspian.”They all raised their glasses after Nadia’s father’s speech, “Cheers.”The night set off, and there was so much chatter, the room was full of guests yet he felt alone, sad and the mead was
Caspian walked side by side with Rurina during the night festival, he looked around but he was very distant. His mind and heart were on Aurora, he really needed to be reunited with her.“Look! Look!” Rurina said excitedly. She was looking at some sweets, they had them in the palace but probably did not know about them. He went over to the stall and got her some which she stuffed her mouth.“So delicious.”Caspian laughed at her excitement, then the next stall ahead of them was one with beauty accessories.Rurina was having fun in selecting one by one,“Sire.”Caspian turned, and Nadia was standing there with the concubines,“I didn’t know you were attending.” Nadia carried on.“I wasn’t but Rurina wanted to come so I came with her.”“Rurina we are having a concubine lunch for you tomorrow at noon.” Nadia said to her.Rurina nodded, “Alright.”Rurina took his hand before they carried on talking and she was dragging him away, she was very strong, no doubt about that. They bought some la
Douglas got into his room and closed the door, he had calmed down after his meeting with his mother.“You look strained.”“How can I not be Douglas, did you find anything?”Douglas sat down, “Can’t even wait for me to sit down.” He teased him, and this made him realize that he was free.“I will after I……….”“I know Caspian, find Aurora.”“Did you find anything.”Douglas put down a scroll on the table and opened it, it had a lot of writing and drawings on it.“There are seven possible areas that Aurora could have gone and it happened a while back, so they are not many witnesses. The other matter is that Aurora left wearing a cloak most probable.”Caspian nodded, he would not give up, “Anything else?”“Aurora seemed to have not taken much, and it seems as if she just disappeared without a trace.”“When did you find out when she was banished?”“After some moons had passed, I had tried to look into it but those who did would be harshly punished.”“Did you notice anything unusual to the we
"No, she just left and you weren't here to protect her." Elliot snapped."When did she leave?""Two years ago, and no-one has heard from her." Elliot replied in a hurt manner."Do her friends know?""No, she was banished from interacting from us and they turned her into a servant. The last time I saw her, she had dark circles under eyes and did not look like the same Aurora I once knew."Caspian clenched his fist, he walked back to his villa. He would not rest until he found her, he would search for her himself. He sat there in so much torment, he had wanted to surprise her of his return after he looked a bit better so that she would not have to worry but that all was for naught. As Caspian sat he tried to not think of the worst that could have happened to her, all he wanted was for to be alive even if it meant she had rewed and had a new life.He just wanted to see her once, just once was enough for him to see her doing well. That was all that he needed. There was a knock on the door
