Maggie came into my room and sat on an armless chair in the corner while Ben and I sat on the bed. She’d closed the door behind her, which all seemed a little secretive to me, but I waited to hear what she had to say before I jumped to any conclusions.

“Liam is a particularly odd fellow for a number of reasons,” she began.

I cocked my head to the side to listen with interest. He hadn’t struck me as odd. Certainly not in the way that Sean had done so. “Why is that?”

“Well, his father is a mage, and his mother is a shifter. He is the oldest of three children, so he’s a mage, but oddly enough, his brother and sister are both shifters.”

Ben and I exchanged a glance. That was odd. “I thought only the oldest chi

My mouth hung open for what seemed like five minutes after Maggie dropped her bombshell. Once I could move my head again, I turned and looked at Ben and saw a similar expression on his face. “Twins?” I repeated, looking back at Maggie. “Liam and Leo are identical twins?”“Yes,” she said with a nod. “And their sister is their triplet. It’s odd to have identical twins and a triplet, but then, for the second and third born children to be shifters…. Well, like I said, we have never heard of such a thing.”I was on the same page as her now, I thought. When she’d mentioned a mage and two shifters in the same family, I absolutely thought that was crazy odd but now that I understood that they weren’t just siblings but all kids that had come from the same womb at the same time made more sense to me

  • Mage of Wolves   Meant to Be

Neither of us said a word as we peeled each other’s clothing off. Ben undid the buttons of my red dress slowly as I stripped his T-shirt off over his head. I ran my hands over the muscles of his chest, my fingernails dragging down the stone-like surface. I had to let go of his lips with my own so that he could pull my dress up over my head and toss it aside, leaving me in a matching red bra and panties, lacy and silky, and needing to come off.His hands slid my bra straps down to my elbows, and I lifted my arms out before he unhooked my bra. He circled my nipples with his fingers before he took my left breast in his mouth. I tipped my head back and moaned, pushing tighter against him, wishing his jeans and my thing were not in the way, but I didn’t want him to let go of me in order for me to get up and remove these final barriers. The idea of magicking our clothes away came to mind, but I let t

  • Mage of Wolves   Catching a Ride

I wasn’t nearly as nervous going back to the airport as I had been leaving Montana to come to Paris. I was excited to be getting home to see my friends. I desperately wanted to talk to someone about what was going on with Ben, even though I hadn’t quite decided who I wanted to confide in. I didn’t want to tell everyone because I didn’t want it to be a big deal. I didn’t want it to be a deal at all. I just wanted someone to advise me on what to do and tell me I wasn’t crazy, but I didn’t know if it would be best to talk to Melanie, Raven, or Sam. I had the idea that if I told either one of the girls they would end up talking to one another about it. I knew if I spoke to Sam about it, he would be a straight shooter with me and never tell another soul. The only problem was, I didn’t know if he’d want to hear it. He’d listen, whether he wanted to hear or not, though. It was just a matter of wheth

It seemed weird having Brice drive the truck with Ben and I sitting in the back seat, so I insisted that Ben sit up front, telling him I’d probably just fall asleep anyway. He reluctantly agreed, and I climbed in the back with the two suitcases, but I wasn’t tired now. I wanted to know where Sam was--but I also didn’t want to know where Sam was.We left the airport and headed down the highway toward home. We hadn’t gone far when I had to ask the question I didn’t actually want to ask. “So… what’s going on?” I asked Brice, knowing he’d know immediately what I was referring to.He didn’t want to answer me, and I could tell he was wishing he’d asked me something first, like more details about our trip. He had asked us in general how it was while we were walking out to the truck at the airport

Brice didn’t want to tell me everything. Brice didn’t want to tell me anything. Even though I’d told him I wanted to know everything that he knew, when he started talking, it was sketchy and disconnected at best.“What did Raven tell you?” he asked me. How he knew it was Raven I had sent the text to and not Melanie or Joshua, I wasn’t sure, but again, it’s that stupid wolf sense they all have that let’s them know a bunch of junk I am not privy to.“She said that Starla’s grandfather found out about their relationship and that he was angry. Her parents wouldn’t let her move in with Sam because they aren’t married, so they went to Vegas to get married,” I said in a bout of verbal diarrhea. I watched Ben’s face and saw that he seemed to know this already, something that didn’

“Welcome home!” Melanie said, wrapping me up in her arms and squeezing me so tight, I thought I might pass out.Once she let me go, I said, “It’s nice to see you.”“You, too,” she said as I hugged Raven and the others. Tony is always slightly standoffish but didn’t mind when I hugged him a little. Joshua gave me a tight hug, though not the bone crushing kind Mel had given me, and then we all walked inside, Brice insisting he’d get the luggage. We took a quick tour of the new space, which I absolutely loved, and then sat down in the new super huge living room area. All of the furniture was new and so comfortable. I sank into one of the couches and almost fell asleep snuggled in the soft, gray fabric.Of course, n

“The guy with the blond hair?” I echoed Melanie’s question, as If I didn’t know what she was talking about. Of course, I did. Well, sort of. I had it narrowed down to two suspects, anyway. It was either Liam Finch or Leo Finch she was somehow seeing in Ben’s head, maybe both. I still had no idea how she knew what it was Ben was thinking about and wanted to go off on a tangent and ask that question first, but I knew neither Melanie nor Raven were going to let it go that I knew who this blond guy was, and they still had no idea.“Yeah. He’s hot,” Melanie said without even looking around to make sure Joshua can’t hear her. “Did you meet him in Paris?”“Sort of,” I said, realizing she’s not going to buy my shenanigans if I tried to pretend that I don’t know who she’s ref

“Eavesdrop much?” I asked as Brice stepped into the room from the adjoining room, where the light was off, and it was impossible for me to see that he was there. I was a little surprised that neither of the wolf shifters I was speaking to had detected him. But then… they might not have realized he was within earshot, or perhaps they did know he was there and figured it didn’t matter if he overheard what we were talking about since they all seem to share each others’ thoughts and experiences anyway.“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop,” Brice said as he took a seat on another couch near the one I was sitting on. “You’re loud.”I rolled my eyes at him. I knew that wasn’t true. I had been doing my best to make sure that I kept my voice down so that no one would hear us unless they were really tryin

  • Mage of Wolves   Epilogue

There’s a comfy chair right next to the fireplace in the main living area of Brookstone. It has become my favorite place to sit. I can sit there for hours and do absolutely nothing but stare out the window at the beautiful forest and sparkling lake. It’s amazing to me to think how far I’ve come in just a year and a few months. I don’t just sit around and do nothing, though. I haven’t had to use my magic to fight off any other mages or shifters since we destroyed Grimly Grouse and his evil minions, but I do use my magic sometimes for other things, like producing presents for my friends or making mythical creatures to entertain us. Brookstone is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. Part of that is the fact that we modernized it and redecorated a lot of the rooms. We wanted all of the modern conveniences we were used to, but we didn’t ruin the amb

  • Mage of Wolves   The Big Bad Wolf

My plan had been pretty simple. I’d bust into Brookstone, make the other mages and any shifters that were there think that the house was on fire, and I’d run them out to where my pack mates were waiting to take them down.I had no idea one of my pack members had her own idea of what should happen then. I guess I should have. It isn’t as if she hasn’t shocked me enough times in the past for me to expect Fionna to do something… unexpected. The mages in Grimley’s pack came streaming out of the house. Most of them went out the front door because I’d started the alleged fire in the kitchen, which was in the back of the house, on the east side. Fionna, being the tricky mage that she is, had opened a portal right on the other side of the front door so that every single one of the mages who ran out that exit sprinted right int

  • Mage of Wolves   Where There's Smoke, There's Probably Fire

I didn’t bother to get a ride back to Brookstone the next day. It was clear that no one wanted to drive out there anyway, and it wasn’t as if it was a necessity. We had other ways of getting there, after all.I volunteered to change my wolves into birds so they could fly with us, but all of them passed on that. They said they weren’t used to flying and were afraid they’d fall out of the sky or something. Like I’d let that happen. I’d rolled my eyes, but since most of the area around where we’d stayed the night before was woodsy and rural, we decided it would be okay for them to walk out into the woods and shift there. The rest of us would fly over.My wolves weren’t going to be entering the property until after I knew the situation in the house. Once I knew whether we were on the defensive or the offensive, I woul

  • Mage of Wolves   Plans

It was difficult to get rooms with enough beds for all of us, but my wolves decided they could always shift into their wolf forms and sleep on the floor, and since most of them didn’t sleep much anyway, we went with that. I was definitely going to be sleeping that night, though. I was so tired, I could barely keep my eyes open to discuss the plan for the next day. Fighting mages is hard work--apparently.“So what is our plan for tomorrow?” Kaylee asked. We were gathered in the room she and I were sharing, all of us sitting on the beds, the floor, and the small sitting area. “I take it we’re going right back there since you wanted to stay so close, Harlow.”“Yeah, we need to go right back over there and take care of things once and for all,” I said. “We just need a plan that will get rid of Grimly Grouse as s

  • Mage of Wolves   Splitting Hairs

With the ground shaking beneath our feet, the mages lifted themselves up into the air. I pulled up my wolves, too, but that didn’t help save my house. The thought of Grimly Grouse destroying my family home was enough to make me want to set his hair on fire. The ground was cracking beneath us now, some of them were at least a foot across. The idea of one of my people dropping inside of one of them was enough to make me want to fly everyone out of there and back to our rental right away.“Kaylee,” I shouted, wanting to try to fix the problem beneath us and keep my wolves out of danger. “Can you take over for me?”“You mean… float them?” she asked. “All of them?”“We can all help,” Liam said from the o

  • Mage of Wolves   Winning or Losing?

Looking around at my mages, I tried to determine who I needed to help and who was okay on their own. Liam was taking on a large male mage with a nose ring and the appearance of horns coming out of his bald head. I assumed those were placed there by magic, and he didn’t really have horns growing out of his head, but it was difficult to know for sure. “Give it up, Harlow!” I heard Grimly shout from far behind the line of advance. “I have more reserves. You cannot win.” It was difficult for me to keep my eye on this brute that was about to knock Liam out and respond to the maniac in the back. I decided to ignore Grouse and concentrate on Liam’s predicament. I was fairly far away from the fight, and there were other engagements going on between me and Liam, but I couldn’t let that stop me. The devil guy with the horn

  • Mage of Wolves   The Heat is On

The mages from Brookstone were slowly walking toward us, their long cloaks in a rainbow of colors not even moving from the wind they made, their steps were so even and slow. I stared at them for a long moment, trying to determine what the best thing to do was. A quick estimate told me that there were probably about thirty of them, which meant my team was outnumbered about five to one as mages went. The wolves would be able to help a little, but not much. They were mostly there to fight off any wolves that came our way, and Grimly Grouse had stopped using those, pulling out the big guns instead. We really only had two choices. We could stand there and fight and probably get annihilated because we were outnumbered so badly, or we could run away, regroup, and figure out when and how we should come back. I was really starting to lean toward Plan B, but when I looked at the faces of my packmates, I could tell t

  • Mage of Wolves   Grimly Grouse At Last

I took advantage of the fearful flicker I’d seen in Grimley Grouse’s eyes and hit him with a bolt of power before he had much time to expect it. He got his hands up, but it wasn’t enough to completely deflect it. I ended up hitting him hard enough to knock him backward almost to the edge of the stream. The other mages around him took a few seconds to stare in shock before they remembered they had powers and could possibly do something to help him. They weren’t going to be able to help him, though. My mages were all ready, so before any of the red cloaked mages could hit me with their powers, mine had their hands up, shooting rays of light to counteract the ones directed at me. I watched the magic around me bend and shift, redirecting back the way it was coming. A few of the red mages were knocked off balance, but none of them went flying the way that Grouse did, probably because mos

  • Mage of Wolves   Accidental Battle

I heard the first sounds of battle coming from my left, to the southwest of the house, but I couldn’t tell who it was that was caught up first by the wolves coming from Brookstone. I thought that Raven and Tony had been the furthest to the south, but I wasn’t certain. I decided I should fly over there and have a look. Of course, by the time I got over there, there was a good chance the rest of my wolves would be under attack as well since we’d seen the wolves shooting through the forest at an incredible rate spread out in a line. As I landed, I heard the sounds of battle echoing across the forest as Grimly Grouse’s wolves collided with mine. This wasn’t going to be pretty. I changed back into my mage form as soon as my feet touched the ground and immediately fired a
