Avoidance

It seemed weird having Brice drive the truck with Ben and I sitting in the back seat, so I insisted that Ben sit up front, telling him I’d probably just fall asleep anyway. He reluctantly agreed, and I climbed in the back with the two suitcases, but I wasn’t tired now. I wanted to know where Sam was--but I also didn’t want to know where Sam was.

We left the airport and headed down the highway toward home. We hadn’t gone far when I had to ask the question I didn’t actually want to ask. “So… what’s going on?” I asked Brice, knowing he’d know immediately what I was referring to.

He didn’t want to answer me, and I could tell he was wishing he’d asked me something first, like more details about our trip. He had asked us in general how it was while we were walking out to the truck at the airport
