Chapter 42

Lyla's POV:

I raised an eyebrow. “What rumor?”

The second maid hesitated before answering. “People say that Marielle’s child… doesn’t belong to the Lycan King.”

For a moment, I was too stunned to respond. Then, I smiled tightly, shaking my head. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned while living under this roof, it’s that gossip is akin to murder.” I began, stepping closer. “So if you value your jobs—and your lives—you’ll keep your mouths shut.”

I turned to leave but paused, glancing back at them. “Just a reminder: I’m not Mr. Knight’s maid. I’m his personal assistant. So anything you say against him—or anyone close to him—will be considered treason.”

Without another word, I walked away, leaving them standing stunned.

As I descended the stairs, my mind raced. Didn’t Lucian cheat on me with Marielle because he loved her?

If that was true, then why was he treating her so harshly now?

My mind drifted back to the day I caught them in a compromising position at the office. They we

Lucian stepped out, adjusting his cuffs as though he owned the very ground he walked on—which, knowing him, he probably did.Curious, I got out of the car as well, watching as James popped open the trunk and unloaded our suitcases. He began dragging them across the tarmac toward the private jet.I hurried to catch up, falling in step beside Lucian. “Wait a minute. Are we using your private jet?”He barely glanced at me. “Why would I use a public one?”I rolled my eyes. “Do you have to answer every question with another question?”Stopping mid-step, he turned to face me, his smirk growing wider. “You know, for an assistant, you ask far too many questions.”Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked confidently toward the jet, his coat billowing slightly in the breeze. As we reached the bottom of the stairs leading up to the aircraft, he paused and looked o

She was so predictable, and yet, her reactions never failed to amuse me. “Go get some sleep.” I said flatly, turning toward my door.As expected, she couldn’t resist.“But it’s just 5:45.” She said, glancing at her phone, her brows furrowed.I stopped, giving her an unimpressed look. “We have somewhere to be by nine, so we’ll be leaving this place by 8:30.” My tone was firm, leaving no room for negotiation. “And don’t even think of asking me where.”“Actually.” She began with a light laugh. “I was just about to ask that.”I shook my head, half-annoyed, half-amused. “Since you’re clearly incapable of following simple instructions, let me clarify. You don’t have to sleep, River. It’s your choice. But we have a long night ahead of us, and I doubt you’ll survive it on whatever fumes of energy you’re running on.”Her lips twitched with another retort, but

Chapter 49 Lyla's POV:The legs of my chair screeched against the tiled floor as I pushed it back abruptly. All eyes darted toward me, their questions halting mid-sentence. My heart pounded in my chest as I stood, feeling like I was on a stage I never signed up for."Excuse me." I started, forcing a calmness into my voice I didn’t feel. "Can I get directions to the bathroom?"The woman seated beside Le Bronx, a small figure with sharp features and piercing green eyes, offered a polite smile. "Of course. Follow me." Her voice was calm.I nodded and followed her. She led me through the sprawling beach house. The house itself was grand, its high ceilings adorned with chandeliers, and the walls were lined with artwork that likely cost more than my entire wardrobe. Every corner spoke of wealth and power. Finally, we arrived at a corridor. She gestured toward a door at the end of the hall. "There you go." She said, her smile lingering.“Thank you.” I replied, assuming she’d leave, but in

His voice is controlled, but there’s an edge to it.I didn't answer. Because how do I explain that I spent the night with Lucian? That, for a moment, I let myself drown in a fantasy that should have died a long time ago?Justin stepped forward, his eyes scanning me, piecing together the evidence. "You were with him, weren’t you?"My silence is all the confirmation he needs. "Goddammit, Lyla!" He slams his fist against the counter, making me flinch. "After everything he did to you? After the hell he put you through?"I snapped out of her daze, anger rising in her chest. "You don’t get to judge m

Without waiting for a response, I ended the call and slipped my phone into my pocket. My eyes trailed down to her phone, still on the floor from where she had dropped it. The way her hands trembled slightly as she stared back at me didn’t go unnoticed.I smirked. "Aren't you stepping out?"Her eyes widened for a fraction of a second before she quickly masked her reaction. Without a word, she crouched down, grabbed her phone, and hurried out of the elevator.Suppressing a chuckle, I stepped inside, and Kael followed, pressing the button for the lobby.Just as the doors were about to close, River hesitated, then turned back. "You have a meeting soon.""Cancel it." I said curtly. She gave a short nod, about to leave again when I stopped her."River."She paused, her shoulders stiffening."I left some files on my desk that I can't take with me right now. Chapter 55Lyla's POV:Justin was right—I was losing sight of the reason I became River in the first place. But it wasn’t because of love, it was pity. And the worst part? I hated that I felt pity for someone like Lucian. Yet, no matter how much I fought it, I couldn’t help myself. When I overheard the maids whispering about how he had turned to drinking after my death, I felt strange. When I saw firsthand how cruelly he treated Marielle, how he barely acknowledged her existence, I realized something—he didn’t love her. And for the first time, I wondered if maybe, just maybe, he missed me.Those thoughts were in my mind, growing until they turned into something I despised—pity. The sound of someone tapping against my desk yanked me out of my thoughts. I blinked and looked up to find Kael staring down at me.“Is there a problem, sir?” I asked, straightening in my seat.He tapped his wristwatch pointedly. “It’s 9:05 AM. You do realize that means it’s almost time for you to fetch Lucian’

My voice came out shakier than I wanted. "Why was Lucian here?"Justin leaned forward, resting his elbows on his desk. His eyes locked onto mine. "He came a few days before you traveled to Mexico.” He finally said. "He said he was running a background check on you."I stiffened. That wasn’t surprising—Lucian was too paranoid not to dig into my past. But that didn’t explain why he’d come here of all places."And?" I pressed, my pulse hammering.Justin exhaled sharply, rubbing his temple before continuing. "According to him, while going through your records, he found something unusual. A plastic surgery record. One that led him back to me."I could barely breathe."He figured out that I was the one who operated on you."I gritted my teeth. "So what did he want?"Justin’s lips pressed into a thin line

Clearing my throat, I pulled it from my handbag and accepted the call without checking the caller ID.“Hello?”A mechanical voice responded. “You didn’t give me a reply last night.”My spine stiffened.Sitting upright, I demanded. “Who the hell are you, and what do you want from me?”I glanced at my screen—the same number that had texted me the night before, claiming to be Matteo. My pulse pounded in my ears as I stood up quickly, grabbing my suitcase and moving toward a more secluded corner of the terminal. Lowering myself onto a bench, I pressed the phone closer to my ear.“Why aren’t you saying anything?” I hissed.“I was waiting for you to find a quiet place. You didn’t seem comfortable beside Mallory.”A chill ran down my spine, as I scanned the area. My eyes darted around, searching for anyone who looked even remotely suspicious. Then it hit m

Chapter 52 Lyla's POV:Yesterday, I combed through the orphanage, hoping to find something—anything—that could give me a clue about what Matteo looked like. But all my efforts amounted to nothing. No pictures. No evidence of him. Then, late last night, I got a message. From Matteo. Or, at least, someone who claimed to be him.If Lucian is suspicious of me, then this could be another one of his tests. A way to see if I was loyal to him or working against him. But Lucian doesn't strike me as someone who would use such underhanded tactics. However, Kael? Kael definitely could. So, yeah. I haven't reached out to Matteo—or whoever that was—yet. I don't want to risk playing into some game, or worse, failing his test.I let out a shaky breath, trying to shake off the fear that had settled in my chest. Rolling out of bed, I stepped into the bathroom, brushed my teeth, and had a quick shower. I dressed simply, no need for anything extravagant today. Stepping out of my room, I glanced aroun

Chapter 51Lyla's POV:Pulling out my phone, I typed a quick message to Justin:“I found a lead on Matteo. It’s a rundown orphanage in Cabo San Lucas called St. Maria Kenston. I’m currently standing in front of the building, just wanting to notify you about my location in case anything happens.”I slipped the phone back into my pocket and pushed the heavy door open. The inside was no better than the exterior. Dust blanketed every surface, and the air reeked of mildew and decay. The faint sound of dripping water echoed through the desolate halls. At the center of the main room stood a weathered statue of the Virgin Mary. Around her, there were several hallways. My heart sank. If I picked the wrong hallway, I could wander aimlessly for hours. But as luck would have it, I spotted an old map mounted on the wall. Wiping away layers of grime, I found the storage room marked in faded ink.It didn’t take long to find the room, though the door protested loudly as I pushed it open. Inside, rows

Chapter 50Lyla's POV:I blinked, stunned by the revelation. “A mask? Facial surgery? That’s... extreme.”She shrugged. “It’s effective. And that’s the kind of man Matteo is—always one step ahead, always protecting his secrets. That’s why Lucian hasn’t caught him. How do you catch someone who could look like anyone?”I stared at her, processing the information. Natalie seemed to know far more about these people than most, and I couldn’t ignore how casually she spoke about them.“You seem to know a lot about Lucian, Matteo and the orphanage.” I said, narrowing my eyes.“I do.” She admitted, a faint smile touching her lips. “I was one of Grandfather’s pupils at the orphanage. That’s where I met Le Bronx. We got married five years ago.”Her words made my heart skip a beat. She was Le Bronx’s wife? That explained her confidence and familiarity with everything.I hesitated. “The orphanage… the Ken ran by the Godfather, what was it called?” I asked, my voice quieter now.“St. Maria Kenston.
