Cindy’s Pov.
The ride to work was a comfortable one and to be honest, it’s been a while since I felt such comfort. My neighbor, Mrs McLean, gave me a lift in her new car. I got to work fifteen minutes earlier so I had enough time to change into my work clothes. M&T restaurant wasn’t a big restaurant but sometimes we barely got customers but I guessed the owner is a really consistent person because despite the low sales, he still manages to pay the staff and maintain the place.
I got into the work quarters, thankfully the people who are working with me in this shift are yet to come. I was to work the evening shift. I quickly took my work clothes from the closet, a light blue plain shirt with M&T’s logo on it and blue pants. I picked my name tag from my bag then pinned it on the shirt. As I was about to leave the quarters, someone I felt a presence behind me.
I picked up a long stick that was placed on the wall, just in case anything was there to harm me. The room was dimly lit so I could see anything at the end of the small room. “Who’s there?”I asked with a shaky breath, clutching the stick in my hands. I tiptoed towards the end of the worker’s mini closet and in a split second, a feminine voice yelled, “boo!” On seeing who it was I let out an exhale and said, “Gosh! You scared the shit out of me Mabel”.
I dropped the stick then stood akimbo looking at her.
“Did Cindy Berman just cuss now?” She asked, grinning.
“What do you mean?” I asked with a confused look.
“You know what I mean. You just cussed right now. You know, the holy pastor’s daughter” she says with a chuckle then walks to the closet to change into her work clothes.
“How come you’re so early? Miss latecomer” I said with a grin.
She was a perpetual latecomer and I don’t know how Mr Sam, our manager keeps believing her lies but seeing her come early was like an achievement for her.
“I see what you did there Cindy. Anyways, my dad dropped me off on his way out, so voila! I’m here” she said with a sarcastic smile that disappeared within a second.
I looked at the time leather on my wrists and said, “it’s already 7:10 pm already. Shall we?”
“Sure, let’s move” she said as we stepped out of the room. We exchanged pleasantries with the workers whom we were taking over the shifts from then sat in our respective positions respectively. There weren't any customers so I moved over to Mabel to talk to her, the boredom was getting too much from where I was seated. Plus my phone developed some issues and I’d have to wait till my payday before I could repair it.
“Hey Mabel, what’s up with you?” I asked, adjusting my seat close to hers.
“Nothing at all, I’m just sitting here, waiting for a customer, that's all.”
“To be honest, I really don’t know how the owner hasn’t sold this place or maybe turned it into a club or something” I said with a grimace.
“I don’t know why too. He hasn’t even showed up for once and yet he’s still investing in this place even though the turnover is pretty low.” She said with an expression that was hard to understand.
“Well it’s his business and it doesn’t really concern us, right? After all he pays us as at when due so I don’t think we should have a problem with this place”
“True that. I guess he must be a rich man anyway”
“Bet…” as I was about to say something else, a young man walked in. I took the menu list then walked up to him where he was seated. As he was looking at the menu, I had the time to appreciate his looks.
Gosh! Those eyes! They were screaming cute! He was a muscular man who should be older than me by a few years. His masculine beauty was out of this world and he is the kind of man I’d love to have a thing with. The only problem I saw in him was the big tattoo on his arm that extended to his wrists.
Being a typical church girl, I couldn’t end up with such a man unless I wanted to be disowned by my father.
“I’d have a glass of martini, extra dirty and tacos.” He said in a dreamy gusty voice.
“Coming right up” I said taking the menu list and flashed a timid smile at him. I felt my cheeks burning and if there was a mirror around here, I’d have checked how embarrassing I must be looking. My face must have definitely turned pink by now. I gave his order to Mabel who placed it on a tray in no time so gave it to him in turn.
I watched him as he ate gracefully without looking left nor right, his eyes were fixed on his phone. His short brown hair was to die for, I instantly wished I could run my fingers through them. Too bad, I might not be the kind of woman he wants; it wouldn't hurt to have sinful fantasies. He suddenly looked towards me, maybe he must have noticed I had my eyes on him all along. Immediately he locked eyes with mine, I looked elsewhere pretending to looking for something that wasn’t missing.
I could tell he gave a faint smile but kept sipping his drink slowly, as he was gazing at his phone. He gave a signal to come and get his bill and I walked gracefully to him. I could feel the heat between my thighs as I walked towards him, God! I wish he could just take me to bed and have his muscular arms do justice to my body. Oops! I’m a church girl and shouldn’t be thinking of things like that.
“You should take a picture of me, it will last longer.” He said in a baritone voice with a calm demeanor, looking at me with those dreamy eyes.
John's Pov I was pissed. I just needed to get away from Fiona by all means, not that I had any specific place in mind. But seeing her face all the time, I get reminded of how little control I have over my life. Dad had to choose a girl for me? Why couldn't I make that decision myself? I'm my own man, that decision has to be mine and mine alone. He's not the one who has to wake up to her fake face everyday for the rest of his life. She can't even hold an intelligent conversation. And the gum! Did she have to chew so loud?! Doesn't she know basic etiquette?! Yeah, I was pissed and I needed to calm down a little. It would have been better if I had a bestfriend I could talk about these stuff with, but our business is a tricky one and we can only trust family; even if I wanted to, I wasn't even that close to anyone. I drove around town a little, hoping to find some kind of distraction, but there was nothing, there was very little that interests me. Eventually, I decided to stop a
John's PovWhen I returned to the club, I was a little bit surprised to see Vince anxiously waiting for me in front of my office. I knew something was off immediately."You're back." He said when he saw me."Yes. Did something happen?""Not really, but I've been asked to wait for you and let you know that your father requests to see you as soon as you return."Why?But even as I asked myself that question, I knew why.Fiona."Did he return home yet?" I asked."No, he's still in his private room.""Alright, I'll go meet him."I didn't bother entering my office, I turned around and made my way to Dad's private room, so not expecting to see Fiona sitting on the armchair across from him with her head down and her make-up streaming down her face. They both looked up as I entered, no doubt Dad had an angry expression on his face."Come in, John." Dad said in a flat tone, gesturing at the empty armchair next to Fiona's. I kept my eyes away from her and took my seat. What did she tell him?
Cindy's pov"He likes you." Mabel said as soon as the handsome customer left. I had no idea she had been listening."There's no way. Did you look at him at all? I'm clearly not his type." I objected."Uh-huh, and he was clearly not staring at you like you're a goddess. Sometimes, I think you just have a pretty head on your shoulders but yet you're so dense when it comes to men. That man was flirting with you and you made a total fool of yourself. You should have flirted back, but you couldn't utter a word. I don't blame you though, he's really hot.""What are you talking about? Besides, did you see his tattoo? He's branded by the devil, there's no way someone like him and someone like me can end up together. We're worlds apart.""Oh please, he did that to himself, not the devil and his tattoo was nice. You're so obsessed with church. If you ask me, I think that men with tattoos are the nicest, they know how to treat their women right. I mean, that's a huge tip and he was a total gentl
The first thing that came to my mind was Maddie!"Mom? Dad? What's going on? Did something happen to Maddie?" I asked, hysterical while I looked down at my wrist watch, checking the time. There was still about two hours before Maddie would return home from school.Mom looked up at me then, actually surprised to see me."Oh, you're home. I didn't hear you come in." Mom said, giving me a smile I knew for sure was forced.Dad looked up then too, but he didn't pretend to smile, he just stared at me but I knew he wasn't really seeing me."What's wrong? Why were you both lost in thought?" I asked with concern.Mom waved it off."We're fine. How was work? Did you have a lot of customers today?""Barely.""I worry for Mr. Sam. We should remember to say a prayer for his business.""I know, mom. But that's not important right now, I know something is clearly up with you two. I'm asking what it is."Mom turned away from me to Dad, staring at him as the sad expression returned to her face.Dad bl
John's povI couldn't concentrate. For the past hour, I've been staring at the heap of documents on my desk without really seeing them. I was plagued with thoughts, thoughts of the angel-like woman I met the day before. I couldn't stop replaying our very short conversation and her smile, over and over again in my head. That was a problem.Even while I was with Fiona, shopping and the rest, I kept thinking about Cindy, wondering what it would feel like having her next to me rather than Fiona. Obviously, I would be happier in her company. But I wasn't doing it again... comparing Fiona to Cindy. That was not fair to Fiona and she actually made an effort to be less annoying throughout our outing. She didn't even buy so many shoes and clothes, unlike her and she used the proper cutlery at dinner. That was a good start.Yet... I was making no headway with work. I had to stretch my legs a little, go out for a bit to clear my head so I could focus on work. I had to get Cindy off my mind some
Cindy's povJohn...John...I liked his name... I liked it even more than Michael. Sure, I didn't know any angel named John, but Jesus's most beloved disciple was named John, that's still good enough.Though I felt bad that he couldn't have his lunch because of me, I was grateful for the talk we had, it left me feeling better. Mom and Dad may not need my help right away but that didn't mean that I was backing down. At the first sign of distress, I'll take up another job or two and make them collect all my savings, but I wouldn't let the worry bother me or ruin my mood anymore.Alright, so maybe Mabel was right, not a lot of men would take out their time to listen to other people's troubles or even offer any advice. And the way John spoke really proves that he could relate. I thought someone like him must have run away from home at age fourteen and lived on the streets, selling illegal stuffs, but I was wrong, he was someone that cared about his parents just like I did.Oh, Cindy! It
Cindy's pov "Okay. So, you're going home now?""Not really. I was just going to hang around until practice is over, but now you're here, I don't mind watching."I found myself blushing and quickly averted my eyes."Also, you told me we'd get to talk later on Sunday but you disappeared on me.""That's... That's right. I did plan to wait, but my dad was in a hurry, so I had to leave.""Maybe we'd get to talk after practice? I could give you a ride home too."Before I could reply, I saw Alice from the corner of my eye, watching us and I panicked. "I'm sorry, I have to go now." I said hurriedly and sidestepped past him to meet the other choir members.Rather than leaving, Sean came back and sat down on the front pew, watching me. I did my best to keep my eyes on anything but him.Since I was already late, I didn't get to exchange pleasantries with Alice, we only made eye contact and she smiled at me, I returned her smile.Practice took nearly two hours but we sounded great and was ready
John's PovI was in dad's private room with him, going through some important documents we needed in settling the deed on a property we wanted to acquire for a new branch of our club in Seattle, when one of the boys knocked and came in."Excuse me, sir. There is a Mr. Berman here to see you." He announced. I saw dad's eyebrow shoot up in question. Berman? That name was new to me, so I knew it couldn't be a business partner."Benjamin Berman?" Dad asked and the boy nodded. At that, dad suddenly broke into a hysterical laugh and I knew for certain there was some kind of bad history there. Dad was someone who could bear a grudge for ages to come."Show him in." Dad said, still chuckling and the boy left.I got up, ready to excuse myself and avoid the entire drama but dad put up his hand."Don't leave yet, let me introduce you two." He said and I nodded against my wish, sitting back down.In no time, there was a light knock and the boy threw open the door, holding it open for the middle-a
John's pov"Cindy?" I asked.God! She looked even more beautiful in her regular clothes; a dull yellow turtleneck sweater over a denim skirt, sneakers and her hair was in a messy bun... she looked so homey. What's more? She was wearing glasses and I could tell they were prescribed."I didn't know you go here." She said with her pretty smile."I don't. I was only accompanying an acquaintance, Vince and his family." She looked away from me then to the others. For some reason, Vince had a disturbed look on his face."Them I know. Hello guys, dropping off your donations?" With how cheerful she spoke, you could tell she did know them."Yeah. What are you doing here though? There's no choir practice today, right?" Lucia asked her."I'm here with Maddie, she practically forced me to come with her.""Who's Maddie?" I asked."My baby sister, she's part of the quiz team. I was actually on my way to buy drinks for them. I'll let you guys be now."I felt a nagging feeling of longing as she turne
John's povIt wasn't anything new for dad to be that cold hearted. In fact, besides his associates, he only ever approves of a loan when he knows the borrower can't pay back, then he has to take something worth more than what was borrowed; something he only had to invest in a little and it brings in ten times more money that was lost. We're the mafia, shady business like that is what we do.I was left to my thoughts in my office, afterall, the only important work that needed my attention was in dad's private room and I wanted to be far away from him at that moment.Sometimes I wonder, dad is business smart and has made a lot of money over the years; why didn't he just abandon the illegal part of the business and have us live remotely peaceful lives? So what if Mr. Berman's business was crumbling, at least he didn't have to watch his back every second or sleep with a gun under his pillow. His kids gets to live normal lives and marry whoever they want and not live a life of a liar.Yeah
