Amari sat at her desk, surrounded by stacks of files and legal documents, her brow furrowed in concentration. The dim light of the lamp cast long shadows across the room, adding to the sense of foreboding that hung in the air.

Suddenly, the shrill ring of her phone shattered the silence, causing her to jump in surprise. She quickly composed herself and answered the call.

"Amari speaking," she said, her voice steady despite the tension that coiled in the pit of her stomach.

"Amari, it's Marcus," came the voice on the other end of the line. "We've got a problem."

Amari's heart skipped a beat. Marcus was her most trusted ally, and if he was calling with bad news, it could only mean trouble.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice tight with apprehension.

"It's the Valencia case," Marcus replied grimly. "The defense just filed a motion to dismiss, and they've got some pretty compelling evidence to back it up."
