CAINES POV

“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.

“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him.

“Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”

“Kid…”

“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed.

Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house.

According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with

LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har

LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all

JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An

JASMINE’S POV The training field was dark, except for the soft glow of the moon and the lecterns that surrounded the field. Caine stood a few feet away, watching my every move with a sharp gaze. I was dressed in loose joggers and a tank top, my hands wrapped with a cloth to protect them during sparring. “Again!” Caine barked. I threw more punches at the dummy before me, kicking and hitting every part just as he’d shown me. We had gone almost an hour with the same routine. Sweat dripped from my forehead as I stopped to catch my breath, my knees supporting my hands. “Do you think Harper and Spencer will give you time to catch your breath”. “Why do you even care if I win or lose?” I asked, frustration eating me up. I was still trying to understand what made his father just fix a match between the twins and me, not considering the difference in our ranks. Caine walked up to me, his dark eyes piercing through the night. “I made you a promise right? I made my father a promise t

JASMINES POV “Dad,” I blurted, my gaze fixed on him as I followed the guards further into the arena. I didn’t notice they had stopped until I bumped into one. That drifted my gaze away from my dad, back to the ring and the wild guards were now facing me. “You wait here until the trumpet goes again,” one of them said, staring at me through the holes in his helmet. I swallowed the fear that crawled into my throat the moment the gates at the opposite end lifted from the ground. Spencer and Harper walked into the arena, their pride written all over their faces. To them, I was a done deal, and they had every reason to show me no mercy because I hurt their sister. The crowd cheered as they made their way in, bare-chested and armorless. “This won’t take long. We’ll just hang around the lines until they’re done with her,” one of the guards nudged the other, a soft chuckle escaping their shielded faces as they walked away. “Ladies and gentlemen,” a loud voice boomed over the microphone.

JASMINES POV When I stirred, I could feel the cold, hard ground beneath me and a metallic taste in my mouth. My eyes fluttered open, hit by the bright light coming from the sun. All of a sudden, everything became dark again. “Awake, finally,” a voice said, drawing my attention away from the once lighted window. Chills ran down my body, sending my heart into a race. I turned my head to find Adrian standing in the shadows, his eyes as red as blood. “Adrian? What’s going on?” My voice cracked, confusion and fear swirling inside me as I struggled with the chains that bound my hands to the wall above me. “Shhh…we wouldn’t want to let the cops know we are here,” he silenced me, quietly walking out of the darkness, into the light which hung above my head. I listened carefully, and that was when I heard the blaring sirens of the cops. “Where am I?” “You’re safe…for now,” he said, crouching beside me. I was about to ask what happened to his eyes and why they were blood red when they fl

CAINES POV Pain shot through my neck as Adrian’s fang tore into my flesh. It burned an unnatural heat, spreading through my veins and weakening me faster than I could comprehend. My wolf howled in agony, struggling to take control. But something in Adrian’s bite dampened my connection to him. I felt my blood leaving my body with speed, and with the strength I had left, I pushed Adrian, crashing into the window. I staggered to the wall but fell before I could get to Jasmine. “Caine,” I heard her voice, faint and muffled. “It will take a while before you will be able to use your legs,” Adrian said, walking out from the pieces of glass that broke after his crash. He carefully extended his hand into the sun's ray and withdrew it immediately after getting burned a little. “What…are you?” I stuttered, the pain seeping deep into my nerves. I fought to get my feet again, but I again, this time face flat on the floor. “Stop fighting the venom. It will only get worse if you fight it.

LUCY’S POV A FEW HOURS EARLIER… “Adrian, no!” I yelled, racing to where he was. But before I could get there, he knocked the air out of Jasmine and zoomed off. “No!” I yelled, scanning the arena which erupted in chaos. There was no sign of them, only the dust that had risen due to the speed Adrian used. “Find Caine,” I told Imani and quickly ran out of the arena. I went through an alleyway at the back of the bridge, making my way to the alpha's office. There were still a few guards on duty, but they didn’t seem like a problem. My father and mother wanted a book from the Alpha office, and a stone too. She called it a Firestone, the last of its kind. I’ve been her little spy without results to show for it, but after seeing through had taken things further with Adrian, I knew this was my time to step up. I let out a heavy breath, arranged my clothes, and walked out of where I was hiding. “We can’t let anyone in,” one of the guards stopped me from crossing the black gates. “C

LUCY’S POV Silence. It hovered in the car like a fourth passenger, safe from Caine’s loud thoughts. I sat beside him, my eyes hours on his wavering expression and demeanor. He was confused and it had something to do with what Jasmine must have told him. I didn’t utter a word to him or the sheriff. All the while, Bryan sat in front, staring outside the window. I couldn’t wait for us to arrive at our destination so we’ll get down to what’s next on our board now Jasmine and her family are out of the way. After taking several turns she routes through the dark, we finally drove up the hilly street that led directly to the alphas mansion. With the lights highlighting the large gates, I could see the Alpha waiting beside his car. He didn’t wait for us to arrive before he started walking towards the car. The sheriff finally came to a halt at the gate, and Caine hurriedly came down. “Baby, wait…” I attempted to go after him. Even his father who had been waiting for his safe arrival

JASMINES POV My great breath hitched, panic flaring through my chest as I watched Caine fall through the glass. For a moment I thought Natalia had lost her mind. She had just shoved him like he was a piece of object. “Why would you do that!” I yelled and raced to the window. It wasn't until I stared out of the shattered glass that my eyes widened in realization. Nina and Daria stood below, their expressions tense but focused. I saw someone putting Caine into the car, but I didn’t see who it was. “What are you waiting for? That’s the only way out of here,” Natalia snapped me out. I sighed, turning back to Father. His expression seemed like he was in support of her idea for me to jump. We are wolves by the way, what’s the worst that could happen? A fractured bone that would heal in seconds? “And what happens to you?” “This isn’t your fight anymore,” she answered. “Go, jump,” my dad urged me. I took a deep breath, shutting my eyes as I let myself off. I pierced through the a

JASMINES POV Pain. It came in sharp waves, crashing through my body like a relentless storm. My ears rang, muffling the panicked shouts and hurried footsteps around me. I tried to move, but my limbs felt heavy, pinned by an invisible weight. “Jasmine!” My mother’s voice was distant, filled with terror. I turned my head slowly, my vision swimming with bright hospital lights and shattered glass. My father lay a few feet away, motionless. I gasped, pushing through the pain to crawl toward him. My fingers trembled as I reached out, barely touching his hand. “Dad…” My voice was hoarse, barely a whisper. He groaned, stirring on the floor as his face turned to me. “Jasmine,” he called faintly. A sigh of relief left my lips, he was alive. But for how long? “He’s breathing,” I assured my mother. Relief fought against my rising fear. My father was alive, but for how long? I turned my head toward my mother, who was groaning as she tried to sit up. Blood trickled down her forehead. “Can

LUCY'S POVI stood at the door of Alpha Morgan, waiting to know what their final resolution was. My ears were wide open, eavesdropping on their conversation. They were taking so much time, and time wasn’t on my side either. Alpha Morgan glanced at me in a manner that made me feel like he knew I was eavesdropping on their conversation. He inched closer to the sheriff and whispered something into his ear, something I didn’t quite get. My heart sank as the sheriff turned and started walking towards me, his expression unreadable. I straightened my posture, forcing a calm expression on my face even though my hands were clenched into fists at my sides.“Lucy,” he called, stealing one more glance at Alpha Morgan who had taken his chair and was watching the two of us. “You may go,” he said. A heavy sigh of relief left my lips, my hand pretentiously resting on my chest. “You almost got me, sheriff. For a moment I feared you would believe those lies she told,” I muttered as I grabbed my bag

I quickened my pace, my heart racing in my chest. The narrow street stretched ahead, dimly lit by flickering streetlights. The sound of my footsteps echoed off the walls, and so did his. My mind raced with panic, trying to figure out what to do next.I glanced over my shoulder again. He wasn’t even trying to hide it now—his eyes locked on me, his pace deliberate and steady. My stomach twisted in knots as I realized I couldn’t outpace him like this.I ducked into an alley, the shadows swallowing me whole. My breath came in short, shallow bursts as I pressed my back against the cold brick wall. I strained my ears, listening for his footsteps. There they were. Closer now.“Fuck!” I cursed under my breath, bursting into a race. I reached for my phone mid-race, but I couldn’t get a view of my screen with the amount of wind seeping into my eye. It slipped out of my hand and fell, bringing me to an abrupt halt. One mistake I made. As I bent over to pick up the phone, he caught up with me,

JASMINES POVI stood at the base of the stairs, watching Livy ascend with her legs shaking with every step she took up. A feeling of relief coursed through me, at least she’d get a draw for what she did—or what she was doing. I still couldn’t quite understand how or when she became this person. Yes. I’d seen signs before, but I overlooked them, believing she was doing it intentionally. “I’ll see Jasmine off,” Caine’s brother said, attempting to walk past them. “I can walk by myself. I’ll find my way out,” I muttered, slowly turning around and walking away from the building. I fought the urge to glance back at what was going on until I was outside the walls of the alpha mansion. The car that was supposed to drive me back home was already waiting at the front of the building, with the back window winding down. I glanced at the driver, whose expression was screaming at me to enter the car and stop wasting his time. I moved to his side of the window and knocked. “I’ll walk,” I said a

JASMINES POV I sat in silence at the back of the car, my eyes fixed on nature's scenery outside the window as the car drove down the road. We passed the pack house, heading for the alpha mansion. Even with my gaze fixed outside the window, I could still feel the sheriff's eyes on me. The one time I stole a glance at the rear, I caught him staring. He didn’t even care if I caught him, his eyes didn’t waiver for the slightest second. The air was getting tight and thick, making the car space uncomfortable for me. I shifted uneasily in my seat, trying to ignore the intensity of the sheriff’s gaze. My wolf growled faintly in the back of my mind, sensing my unease. The car finally pulled into the long driveway leading to Alpha Morgan King’s mansion. The estate was as grand and imposing as I’d heard—tall iron gates, perfectly manicured lawns, and a towering structure that seemed to loom over everything around it. As the car came to a stop, the sheriff stepped out first, opening the do

JASMINES POV The ride home was silent, with my father occasionally glancing at me through the rearview mirror. I kept my gaze fixed on the passing scenery, replaying the scene at the hospital in my head. Caine’s words, or rather the lack of them, echoed painfully in my chest. “Caine’s gone,” I’d said to my father earlier, but now that reality was sinking deeper, it felt like a knife twisting in my heart. When we finally arrived home, I went straight to my room, dropping the untouched flask on the bedside table. My wolf growled softly in my mind, restless and agitated, but I silenced her with a deep breath. I couldn’t let my emotions spiral out of control—not yet. I stared back at the flask, wondering if I shouldn’t have left. Maybe I should have stayed back to fight for what rightfully belongs to me—to fight for Caine’s love. But to what end? Even when he was still with his memory, he didn’t love me as much as he said. And now, with his memories gone, what difference would it m

JASMINES POVI didn’t know if I should walk up to him or stand by and watch where he was going. It felt awkward, seeing him him here. He made a turn to the left, leaving my sight immediately. I attempted to go after him but froze mid-way. “We probably shouldn’t be seeing each other at this moment…” I thought. I retraced my steps back to Caine’s room. With a deep breath, I pulled the knob and strode in. I froze at the door when I spotted Lucy. She was sitting at the edge of the bed, tendering to his legs like she owned that part of his body. “Lucy,” I called with a heavy breath, forcing a smile to hide the gut-wrenching pain that struck my heart. “I didn’t expect to see you here,”“Jasmine,” she called in return, slipping out of the bed, being careful enough not to wake Caine. He looked so peaceful at sleep, and I wondered what must have gone down the past two days of my absence. Lucy’s eyes darted to the flask in my hand, and she smirked. “Figured someone had to take care of him
