On getting to the night club, I headed to the V.I.P lounge as I waited for Victor to arrive and he did in Thirty minutes time, walking in with all swagger like he hadn’t kept me waiting. When he finally sat down opposite me, he apologize.
“Sorry man, you know how Lagos traffic dey be.”
“I do and that is the only reason why I am still sitting here. Let’s order…”
“No, let’s hear your story on how there is trouble in thy kingdom first besides, I want to be able to still drink later when I am dancing.”
“okay.” I took in a deep breathe. “I like Tomi more than a friend.”
“I thought you were supposed to tell me the things I didn’t already know.” Victor frowned at me as I stared in shock at him.
“What do you mean that you already know?”
“Guy, I was practically living in your room for two years, no guy will stay awake studying for a course he is not offering only to teach a girl later and she is not paying him in cash or kind. You did that multiple times for Tomi. Heck! Most of our circle knew that she controlled your mumu button. Your saving grace was that she was not aware of it.” Victor explained.
“Jesus, I thought I hid it well.” I groaned as I buried my head in my hands, it was clear that Femi noticed because it was my fault, I didn’t hide it well at all.
“You did your best.” Victor said placating. “Oya, wetin happen.”
“My brother noticed, so he told Tomi to reduce the time she spends with me and she told me and threatened to do that if I don’t get a girlfriend.”
“Wait, she was trying to force a girl on you?” Victor asked sitting up.
“Nor give me attitude about you not liking her.” I said tiredly.
“the reason why I don’t is because she is selfish. She went after your brother while you were still friends and now she is looking for a way to keep both of you, what did you do instead?”
“I made the decision for her and walked out. I haven’t spoken to her or my brother in ten days.” I replied as Victor nodded his head in approval.
“Good choice, it’s about time you let go of your likeness of her she is toxic to you.”
“Victor.” I snapped at him with a warning tone in my voice, he knows better than talking trash about her in my presence.
“It’s the truth brother, you know I say things as it is. Or do you want me to start listing so many occasions where your life would be so much better if you had not held on to the friendship you had with her and the first chance of things becoming hard for her, she wants you to take the fall so she doesn’t get to do something she isn’t comfortable with.” Victor snaps too as I cracked my neck to release some of the tension I was feeling.
“What I had a problem with was her plainly choosing my brother over me. You know how that thing dey do me for body na.” I tell Victor moving the talk away from Tomi Selfish streak which I thought has always looked cute on her, examining it from Victor point of view was not something which I was comfortable with.
“I do, most of your close friends know and she clearly knows and yet she still did it, what does that tell you Kola.” Victor asked me.
“That I need to create some distance between us.” I mumbled as victor hit my back.
“Attaboy, you already know what to do and to arrive at the right decision, you just wanted someone to approve of it and that is what I did. You never needed help to realize the right thing to do.” Victor smiled as I shrugged his hand off me.
“You should have studies psychology in school.” I told him as he snorted.
“So that I will listen to people like you bitch about things they already figured out by their selves, no thank you.” He snorted. “I am very fine with my Investment agent work.”
“That reminds me, I have another 500k for you to take off my hands.” I tell him as he smiled.
“Good, you know, your money with me is enough to start something more, try and visit our office one of these days.” He said as I smiled.
“Should I transfer the money to your account?” I asked him.
“I will just transfer it back to you until you come to the office, it’s high time that you take the front seat in your investments. I don tire to dey make the choices by myself.”
“But you are good with it, and I am involved, I do ask you if I am making profit or loss and you always say profit and also you give me a sum I am pleased of quarterly, that’s enough for me.”
“You are not escaping this oh. Either you come and we discussed your money or you can send the rest to some new agent.” Victor threatened me.
“Fine, I will fix it into my schedule.” I said.
“And correct that schedule, remove all the times you have to spend to Tomi, replace them with something else unless you have a girl who can replace those time frame.” Victor said as I shook my head.
“I don’t think that I will be involved with another girl soon.”
“You were never involved with Tomi, so don’t use the word another and why will you not be?”
“Because I don’t think love exists.” I replied as he shook his head.
“Oh God, Classic heartbroken guy words. Love exists, you just chose the wrong girl to give yours to and a girl who already has a boyfriend who is your brother. What were you even thing sef. Eh! Now did you nor know that your heat will be broken at the end of the day. Love exists, Because Tomi played Seaway with your heart doesn’t mean love doesn’t exist.
“So what do you suggest I do, get under another girl… like you.” I scoffed.
“Yes! exactly!” victor cried. “Not like me though, mine are girls but yours should be girl, you always have that family man look down to a pat.” When I turned away from him and stood up, he also stood up with me too. “Okay sorry, you don’t have to get under her, sideways work just as fine or you can stay on top.” Victor said as I shook my head.
“You will never change, I am going to have a drink then leave.”
“Me too, but I will dance first, with more than one girl and then leave with the one that tickle my fancy.”
“Thank you for coming out with me. Whatever you drink will be on my tab.” I tell him absentminded.
“Oshey baddest guy, Thank you oh. Your boy is loyal. Rich kid extraordinaire.” Victor hails.
“Abi, you nor want?” I asked him but he laughs.
“Person nor fit play with you. Take care man.” He said as he moved towards the dance floor while I moved to the bar, I started a tab for Victor and settled in with a tumbler of vodka, and turned to watch the crowd. That was when I saw her.
The girl in a red top and black jeans. What drew my attention to her was the annoyance on her face but what kept it was the rest of her body. I thought Tomi shape was sinful, this girl shape was the meaning of that word and based on her dressing she knew it too. She was well covered but it still didn’t hide her. When she stomped to seat at the opposite end of the bar area, I signaled a waiter.
“Sir?” the waiter asked, it wasn’t even up to a minute I raised my hand, I guess money really do talk.
“That girl in the red top. Send her a Sminoff ice. Courtesy of me but don’t tell her.” I told him still not taking my eyes off the girl.
“Yes sir.” He replied and took off to do what I had just ordered. I watched as the waiter gave the girl the drink but she shook her head and when the waiter insisted, he nodded and smiled. As soon as the waiter back was turned, she got up and left her drink at the table she was sitting on and moved into the dance floor, I followed her until we were in the middle of the crowd then I reached out to her.
At my touch, she quickly turned around and although the lightning system were lower here, I could still see her scowling face. “Hi, my name is Kola. What’s yours?” I asked her.
She scanned me with her gaze and whatever she saw must not have impressed her because she drawled. “not interested.” Before she flung her hand off her and continued on her way.
I have never experienced the kind of reaction I got from her and her rudeness rubbed me the wrong way. “That’s a very bad attitude you got there.” I said hurrying after her.
“Thanks, I love it.” She returns not bothering to look at me.
“Oh yeah? What do your parents think of it.” I retorted as she actually laughed at me.
“Who did you think cultivated it for me. Abeg dude, just because say I dey this kind of place nor mean say I be your type.”
“And wetin make you think say I nor be your type.” I ask her in pidgin but she just smile and looked at me shrewdly.
“Because you can’t afford me.” she said as she continued walking. I stopped to stare at her causing a guy to bump into me, after some annoying comments, he moved on but I still stared at the place she was standing before. Hmmmm. Color me intrigued.
I went after her and stopped at a scene where she was dragging a girl to the door, one of the guys who was dancing with the girl was extremely aggressive with trying to tug the girl to his side but he wasn’t having much luck since he was drunk. I followed the three outside because with the way the guy was moving, he spelled out trouble for the girl.
I left the club after paying the tab only to hear the drunk girl shouting, I rounded the corner of the club to see the drunk guy slapping the girl that was in red. Before the guy could make another move I was in front of him. “this is not your business, get away from here.” He slurs as I shook my head at him.
“you leave, if you make a move against her again, I will give you the beating of your life.” I told him dead serious, he looked as if he was contemplating going against my words but decided against it and walked back into the club. I turned to face the girl only to see her assisting the other girl who looked like she would soon fall out of her clothes.
“You can’t afford her too.” The girl snarled.
“I don’t want her, I want you.” I tell her plainly.
“And I prefer the drunk guy over you but since we can’t get what we want, how about you leave me the hell alone.” She responded as I smiled. I love her fire.
“At least, let me carry you girls home…”
“so you will know our house, not a chance.”
“Then fine. A bus stop.” I said “Or would you prefer a cab.” The girl was so infuriating, questioning every word I said.
“No, Bus stop is nice.” She replied as she held her friend by the arm and followed me. I took her to my car and opened the door for her, after mumbling a barely heard thanks, she moved in and settled with her friend there.
I got into the car and started driving, trying to make small talks but she refused to give me much answers. When we got to the bus park and she was about to get off, I stopped her. “Please, at least let’s exchange contacts.”
She sighed but gave me her phone to input my number, I did and on an impulsive decision, I used her phone to call me.
“Why will you do that?” she barked.
“Because I think you would have given me a fake contact.” I replied and when she didn’t say anything, I knew that I was right.
“What should I save your number as?”
“Sexy girl 40 or maybe damsel in distress.” She returns.
“Your sass is getting too much oh.” I told her seriously but she just rolled her eyes at me.
“Stella.” She replied before she took her cousin away.
I grinned as I went back into my car. I never had such a hard time collecting a girl number before, I also never had to deal with the disinterest she is showing. Maybe she will be a worthy challenge.
“I said I was sorry na, what do you want me to do.” My cousin from the night before said as I continue to glare at her.“I was slapped because of you and you are still throwing shade at me.” I griped at her.“Not throwing any shade oh, just calm down na. Please Stella, I am sorry!” Ivy said with a roll of her eyes which proves that her words were as insincere as before even if she managed to infuse sobriety in them.“One day, you will enter gbese. The kind of one which I will not be able to help you out of.” I said tiredly then moved towards the bathroom.“Why do you do
He is so arrogant, how could I have thought that first impression for him didn't matter. At least his first impression is way better than the second one, I mean who takes someone he had just met to his investment office to show her his investments. If he was hoping that I would just jump into bed with him after I have seen how much he has, he is going to be so surprise when he sees how off marker he is."Hello, good afternoon Mr. Adeyemi, can I get something for you to drink?" the same girl who has been yapping around him since he stepped into the building asked, this time she had popped a button on her top and was leaning towards him, giving him an eyeful... or would have if he was looking but he barely glanced at her which meant he was used to this kind of scenario happening often.
I was in my office reminiscence on how well I and Stella clicked, that was last week but I still couldn’t stop thinking about that day. After my boring investment talks with Victor which surprisingly was not boring to Stella, I learnt that she was a business management student and also not as bitchy as she had acted, she did have her moments when her character threatened my patience but she did apologized later and we spent a wonderful time together. And she also chose to call it a non-date, that girl is very hard headed and that was what was keeping me interested in her.Her stubborn attitude has it’s uses because I think if she had been like every other girl, she won’t be in my passing thought but she somehow got hold of my thought process and I couldn’t even think of Tomi as usual which was a first in history because I had always thought about that girl.
Networking“Tell me you are joking. Kola, I am supposed to start my I.T next two weeks at Ojo and sons ventures.” I raged stomping around in Kola office showing my disagreement with his decision. “You cannot change it with a snap of your fingers.”“Yes I can’t do that but I can with a phone call.” Kola replied as I sent a glare his way, my glares seem to have stopped working because he just still look at me with his calm face on. “Come here babe.” Kola adds as I glared more at him.“No, I don’t want to be with arms reach of you, I might rip your hand off and beat you with it.” I retorted and Kola just smiled at me, it has been two months since we first met and we are still friends or I think we both know that we are more than friends already, we already act like we are dating but I wasn’t so certain about my reply if he does ask me out, I think h
“So is your rich and well connected boyfriend picking you today?” Jess, a girl who works at the company Kola placed me in, said spitefully.“I have told you that he is not my boyfriend.” I sighed, she will just continue to attack me, and she hates the fact that I didn’t work as hard as she and her friend did to get a job here, well the rumors said she slept with one of the senior officers in charge of recruitment to give her and her friend acceptance letter but then an order came from the owner of the company that I am to be placed on the team so her friend was dropped.“So friends with benefits then. All these girls that won’t keep their legs closed and using their bodies to get to places where the rest of us got with our brains.” Jess said a little too loudly as the rest of the students who were sharing an office with
I didn’t lie when I said that me and Stella are just friend but that word has been ringing in my head and it felt wrong, I even started to feel more out of place when Kevin handed his personal card to Stella, the only reason why I didn’t punch Kevin for that bold move was because I knew Stella will never use the card for anything other than the business.“What’s wrong? You have been quiet since we entered your car.” Stella glanced at me.“Nothing.” I replied as my mind races for an excuse, Stella is like a dog with a bone, she won’t let go until she is satisfied with the answer which was given.“You need to learn how to lie better my dear.” Stella repeated the words I said to her barel
“You do know that you are not supposed to outshine the celebrants.” I teased Stella as she entered my car. Her lace material fitted her shape to perfection and at the same time it wasn’t too much. Her face had minimal make up but still highlighted her soft features, I already felt proud that she was going to be on my arm today.“Shut up” She turned her head away from me embarrassed.“Honestly though, I think my mother will not be too angry since you will be on the arm of her son. You are beautiful.”“Thank you, you are not so bad yourself. Your Abgada look nice.” Stella complimented me too
I knew my place with Kola was not solid enough to be making mouth at Tomi who has been his best friend for years but I was pissed, that girl had hurt Kola, granted before I met him but she still had to act like she is the most important person in his life. She might be but I was betting on me being special enough to Kola for him to tolerate me and he did. That alone gave me joy, I was ignored by the other ladies in the party, Tomi even had the audacity to introduce Cynthia, Kola ex girl friend to me and I had to bite my lips as I watched as Cynthia tried to flirt with Kola. The guy was just acting dense and as usual, it was endearing to me but I was tired of watching a lady fling herself at my boyfriend while the girl who introduces herself as Kola best friend to others was actively trying to make me look like a fool.
“Who is it?” I shouted as I stood up, a little woozy from my excessive drinking even though my head was clearer now. I opened the door without looking. “What?” I screamed into the face of the person.“Gross. Try that again and I will hurt you.” Stella threatened from my door step as I blinked a couple of times to determine that she was real. “So are you going to let me in or am I going to force my way in?” she demanded and her words broke me out of my stupor, I stopped blocking the doorway so she could enter.“Stella what are you doing here?” I asked her as I shut the door behind her and followed her to the sitting room.“If you are not happy to see me just tell me now so I can leave?”“What’s the point, you are leaving either way.” I tell her not referring to her leaving my house. Her sa
“I can’t believe that you are leaving me in Nigeria. This is not fair oh.” Ivy complains as she tries another of my shoes on.“Madam, shey you supposed to dey help me pack.” I glanced at her but continued to zip my luggage up.“Eh en, wetin you think say I dey do so?” Ivy commented as she smiled at the shoes she had on. “Dash me this one na, you will see beta ones to buy in Georgia.”“Ivy.” I complained.“Alright.” She removes the shoes. “I still think that I need it more than you though.”Before I could reply her for her statement, my phone rang, I saw it was an unknown number but I picked the call without hesitation. It could be Bode, he recently lost his phone and has been using different numbers to call. Buy phone in Nigeria like a normal person but no, he has to order one

Today was the day. I breathed out heavily, hoping to release the tension I was feeling but it didn’t help. I was going to attend Tomi Traditional marriage, the white wedding was tomorrow but I wasn’t sure I could get the chance to have a private chat with Kola then.“Are you sure you want to do this?” Bode asks.“Of course, she will so be worried about my presence, I want her to feel uncomfortable a little bit.”“But it is Kola brother who is getting married, why will the bride feel that way?” Bode asked again as I smiled at him. He doesn’t know the full story and no matter how much I was upset with Tomi and Kola, I wouldn’t tell another soul what happened since it can affect her happily ever after. I didn’t get mine because of her but that doesn’t mean that I will repay evil with evil.“Okay oh, let’s go.” Bode said as I smiled and came down from his car the same time he did and rou
Uncle Tony made good of his threat, he left jail the next day after posting bail. He also sent men to kidnap me but the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crime Commission) swooped in and arrested him. Apparently, according to the small information that I could hear while I was still bundled up in the kidnappers nest when everything had gone down, Uncle Tony was being investigated, had been for a while and that someone tipped them off that something was going to happen to me so they watched me too and used this to pin Uncle Tony down.“… Chief Anthony decided to confess his crimes for a reduction in his sentence, from NTA, I am Aisha Yusef reporting.” Bode clicked the TV off in my hospital room.“We need to celebrate.” Bode turns with a flourish and a grin so wide, you could probably count his thirty two teeth.“Alcoholic beverages please.” Ivy added after letting out a whoop and a shocking waist roll that
“You asked to see me Kola?” Tomi asked as she entered my office, she must have gotten my text the night before, I sent it the night before and I couldn't care less when she got it. It didn't matter to me if she had to rush here. Somehow she must know that this is our last time together.“Have a seat.” I tell her. When she sat down she started to talk but I didn’t call her here to listen to her talks, I called her here for her to listen to me. “I never meant for you to be unhappy Kola, believe me…”“Stop, I am not in the mood for your apologies. Why did you do it? That’s all I want to know, why on earth were you convinced that you like me or that I liked you, yeah sure, I might have liked the idea of us being more but that was because you were a safe place for me, why did you have to ruin it?”“Because I thought we would be more.” Tomi
Days turned into weeks and still I remembered Kola as if he was right beside me, it didn’t get easier, I just got used to the absence. A very good way which I used to keep myself busy and away from thinking about him was A.I. the company had years of rot on it and I was taking care of it one at a time but this time… I was going after the big one.“You are fired and the police downstairs will like to see you.” I said as I dropped the sack letter I had drafted on Uncle Tony table.“What do you think you are doing little girl?” he asked, removing his glasses and dropping the newspaper he was reading on supposed office hours.“Removing the person who tried to ruin my cooperation from the inside out.” I returned with a glare, I was a little bit scared but I won’t let it get to me, I needed to see his face as I checkmated him.“You can’t do anything Stella, go do a beauty
“Are you sure that, that is what happened?’ Ivy asked gently but still annoying. This is the sixth time she was asking that question within the hour that I have gotten home, Bode is still in the sitting room while I was changing, and he wanted to see me calm first before he leaves.“Yes Ivy, how many times do you want me to say it. Kola was in a lip lock with Tomi when I entered his office. And no I didn’t imagine it and neither was my mind playing tricks on me.”“Brother Kola is not the type of person to do this.”“He lied before… I am not surprised, I would have never trusted him.” I brushed my face angrily, I hated the tears that kept falling. They needed to stop. Princess was right, Kola was not worth my time or tears if he is the half decent human that he tried to convince me that he was.“Okay oh. Let me leave you to pull yourself together while I keep Bode company.” Ivy paused
I don’t know where I was driving to. All I knew was that I had to get away from Kola before I would run him down and I needed to get as far away from him as possible. A police checkpoint was ahead of me and when I stopped in front of them, I tried to clean my tears.“Ma’am are you Okay?” he asked as I smiled through my eyes that were watery again.“Sure officer.” I lied as I collected the driving license from my car and passed it to him.“The particulars of the car.” He added and I passed it to him too, when he saw it he nodded. “Can you park the car to the side ma’am?”“Okay.” I said confused but I parked the car any way and he took his sweet time in joining me where he told me to park the car.“I need you to call someone, every of your documents is in a good shape but you are not.”“You cannot make that assumption, I am perfectly fine.”&
