Luca's POV

My phone buzzed in my pocket, a call from my mother. I glanced at the screen but declined it. I couldn’t deal with her panic right now.

Suddenly, my father stirred, his weak voice breaking the silence. “Luca… are you alright?”

I stared at him, anger bubbling up again. “Am I alright?” I repeated, my voice low and sharp.

“That’s what you’re asking me? You’ve been hiding this from us. From me. How long have you known? How long have you been coughing your lungs out, pretending nothing was wrong?”

To my shock, he laughed, a dry, wheezing sound that only made me angrier. “Luca,” he said, his voice raspy, “I’m old. I’ve lived long enough. What’s the point in clinging to life when it’s already slipping away?”

“Stop talking like that,” I snapped, stepping closer to the bed. “You don’t get to talk about death like it’s some casual thing. You don’t get to leave us like this, leave me like this.”

His tired eyes softened, and he gestured for me to sit beside him. Reluctantly, I did, th

I only found out weeks ago, Luca, the same day you brought the hacker lady into the mansion.”I sighed, even while I thought I was doing everything right. Something wrong has been going on behind my back.My mother gasped, changing the topic “But did you say Indiana? Luca, is it safe?”“Don’t worry about that,” I said firmly, cutting her off. “I’ll handle it. I promise you, everything will be fine.”There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Then, softly, my mother said, “Please, be careful, Luca.”“I will,” I said, my voice softening slightly. “And Ma... take care of the girls. Keep them close. Vincent will be with you. He’ll protect you while I’m gone.”I heard her sniffle, and my chest tightened. I hated hearing her like this, but I couldn’t let myself dwell on it. I had to stay focused. When Vincent came back on the

Astrid’s POVThe moment I walked into the meeting with Ace, every pair of eyes in the room turned to me, their expressions a mix of shock, anger, and distrust. I could feel the tension crackling in the air, but I kept my head high and my steps steady. This wasn’t the time to falter. I had made my choice, and I wasn’t going to let anyone question it.“Isn't she Luca's hacker?”I heard one of the members murmuring to another. “Why would Ace bring her here?” the other responded.A man seated near the head of the table couldn't help but make me shudder at the question he asked. “Do we know you?” he stared at me, trying to remember if he actually knew me.“She's astrid, Luca's hacker… I mean a former hacker.”Ace introduced me to everyone as I stood there waiting for someone to speak.“Ace? She’s his ally?” The man that had the shuddering question scoffed, slamming his hands on the table, his voice booming.“A snake in our den, Ace. What the hell do you think you're doing?”Murmurs of agr

Astrid's POVI stepped into the kitchen, craving something cold to drink after the suffocating heat of the day. My plan was to pour myself a glass of orange juice and retreat to my room, away from the endless chaos that seemed to follow Ace.But of course, nothing here was simple. The maids insisted on serving me, practically wrestling the glass from my hands. Their persistence was almost comical, but it was also exhausting.“Why are you all so relentless?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at them. One of the younger maids hesitated before answering, her voice trembling slightly. “Mr. Ace doesn’t like it when his guests aren’t properly taken care of. He…he specifically told us to treat you like a princess.”A princess. I nearly laughed out loud. I wasn’t sure what Ace was trying to pull with this nonsense, but it was starting to get on my nerves. I didn’t want special treatment. I didn’t need anyone fussing over me.It was what I handled in Luca's mansion, and I wouldn't let it go on here.

Astrid's POVThe maids returned with the first aid kit, and Ace insisted on cleaning the wound himself, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the frustration simmering just beneath the surface. As we sat there on the cushion, I couldn't help but think if he sincerely cared about me. The Ace I knew before was in conclusion a selfish bring. But now it seemed all that had changed only because I had agreed to be with him.Was he doing all this so I'd have no reason to leave just like I left Luca? The thoughts lingered in my head, and now I came to the conclusion that I overthink so much.I watched him for a while, taking my gaze away once he glanced at me. I felt his hands rubbing my hands romantically, on purpose. The whole thing was becoming too weird to handle. “I can do it myself.” I said politely, taking over as I began to treat my pinky finger.Ace stood up, I could sense that he was staring. “Next time, just let them handle it.”I nodded, but my mind was elsewhere. Astrid's POVAfter Ace left, I headed back to my room, my thoughts swirling in a chaotic mess. His words replayed in my mind, Luca will be found, and he will get what he deserves. Ace always had a way of making things sound so final, so absolute. But this wasn’t as simple as he made it out to be.I shut the door behind me and locked it, needing the solitude to think clearly. Pulling my laptop out from its hiding spot, I sat on the bed and opened it. Ace had told me that Luca had disappeared, and I couldn’t help but feel a pang of frustration. If Luca was gone, then everything, the information I knew, the leverage I had was useless.I leaned back against the headboard, staring at the screen as my fingers hovered over the keyboard. I had to try. If Luca was out there, I needed to find him before anyone else did. I began typing, my fingers moving with a rhythm that felt all too familiar. Back when I worked for Luca, his systems were an extension of myself. I’d spent hours hacking, bui

Astrid's POVDinner was supposed to be a quiet moment for me, a chance to gather my thoughts and regroup after the day’s chaos. But instead, I found myself still glued to my laptop, sifting through more dead ends. Every call I made to resorts, penthouses, and properties Luca owned turned up nothing. He wasn’t keeping his family in any of the obvious places.Of course, he wasn’t. Luca was smarter than that, too clever to leave a trail anyone could follow, even me.Then I saw one last place I could call. It was a The sound of footsteps approaching pulled me from my thoughts. I barely had time to close the laptop before Ace walked in, his presence as commanding as ever.“Where have you been?” I asked casually, trying to sound more curious than nervous. “Did you go to any meetings without me?”Ace shook his head, a small smirk playing on his lips. “No meetings today. There’s one scheduled for tomorrow, though.”I nodded, trying to mask my relief. “Well, you should join me for dinner, th

Astrid's POVAs the members of the El sombra planned a funeral for the deceased Ivano family, they also planned out how to capture Luca and that's where I come in, that's the reason I was here. And yes, I had followed Ace to another meeting like he had not just threaten me last night. What was my purpose anyways? Did I really want to go ahead with being on Ace's side. I sighed, I wished I could disappear into thin air, it'd bring massive peace into my life if neither Ace or Luca knew where I was.My thoughts were dragged away when I suddenly felt a hand rubbing my left shoulders. “Is everything alright?” Ace whispered, his eyes filled with concern.I shrugged, turning back to my computer. “Yeah, I guess.” I muttered “Do you think your source got his tracks right?” one of the members asked another who had suggested taking the search for Luca's family into his own hands.“Whoever works under me knows how to do their jobs right. Or do you think you have better underlings than I do? The

Luca's POVThe city's buzz echoed in the atmosphere as I remained in my softly illuminated penthouse, gazing through the expansive glass doors up from here. The moon's light shone its brightness, it resembled cars as they weaved through the streets underneath, creating memories. Indiana wasn't a place of residence, yet it had turned into a refuge of sorts until things calmed down. I rested against the rim of the glass, the cold piercing my skin. I recalled the hospital, envisioning my father's pale ailing face while he rested on the surgical table. He appeared delicate, more feeble than I ever imagined a man like him could be. “Forgive them,” he had stated, his voice hardly more than a murmur. "Look after your mother and your sisters." "Also, Astrid…" I tightened my hands recalling the memory. His words pierced me like a sword. Even in the face of death, my father managed to consider Astrid. He thought she was my perfect match, that she merited my class of women. Deep down within

Luca’s POVIn the end, I learnt that what was meant to be will always be. Here’s me, happy with my kids and my sweetheart Astrid. If someone had told me a few years back that I’ll find a girl who had the code to my heart, I would have laughed at them and called them foolish. I just? Cos I was a hard nut to crack. I was just all about my business, conquering cities and being the boss, bloody fights etc. I had no eyes for love. But Astrid isn’t just a hacker of systems, she had the ability to even hack into hearts. She did so to mine.I stared at her, as she walked round the house trying to put one or two things in place and I couldn’t help but feel blessed. “Dang! I had it all!” I said to myself smiling sheepishly. I had my baby girl and the kids… I felt like I had the entire world under my feet. Like I could trample on anyone and everything just for my family.“What’s running through your mind? You’ve been lost in thought for a while, I noticed” she said softly with a smile.“Mum…

Luca's POVI raised my hand and slowed in my movement. "Let her go, Ace. That's not an option.A sharp, bitter laugh pierced the cold night. "Do you think I care what you do, do you think I care?”Astrid winced but said nothing. Her teeth clenched and I saw her fist clench. She was angry, but she was also scared. I couldn't blame her."You've lost, Ace," I said calmly. "Your people are gone. El Sombra's job is done for. Let Astrid go, and maybe, just maybe you can get out of here alive."Ace scoffed. "Don't insult me, Santoro. Do you think I'm afraid of you? You're the one who should beg for mercy. You have no choice."What do you think, Ace?" I asked, ignoring his sarcasm."Money? Power? You name the price, I'll make it happen. He grinned, his eyes glinted with malice. "What do I want? It's simple. I want you to leave, Luca."I frowned, my mind filled with thoughts. "What did you say?"Ace hugged Astrid tightly and leaned toward her."Kill yourself," he said in a low voice. "If you d

Luca's POVAs I stepped out of the car with Halo beside me and the rest of my men behind me. My boots crunched onto the gravel path, past the blazing warehouse along the dark road. The air smelled strongly of diesel, and in a confused, oppressive way. I felt the weight of this decision on my shoulders, but I was too far gone to turn back. This meeting was not about reconciliation. It was about drawing a line. The door opened, and a dark figure emerged. One of the eldest members of the El Sombra group. That sharp, wild smile like a knife made my blood irate.Behind him, I saw Astrid. She stood motionless, close to Ace, with an unspeakable expression on her face."Luca Santoro, you've been here a long time." One of the El Sombra members stepped forward."I'm here. Let's get started," I said."That's a brave move, Luca," Ace said, his voice filled with the arrogance I hated."You made it to the gates of El Sombra with weapons. Or should I say you're just ... scared?I didn't answer, jus

Astrid's POVThe moonlight shone, exposing the gloomy night. I prepared to leave, I knew this would be my only chance to get away from Ace and his watchful guards. He trusted me less with every passing day, and I had to make my move before he decided to tighten his grip completely.I hung the small bag over my shoulder, tucking the paper with Luca's address into the inner pocket of my jacket. The laptop I’d used to track him was safely hidden, wiped clean of any traceable activity.I exhaled quietly as I opened the window of my room. The estate's security lights shone towards the grounds below in slow, predictable arcs.I had studied the patterns of the securities countless times, preparing for this exact day.As the lights went out steadily, I came out, clinging to the ledge as I lowered myself beneath the first floor balcony. My feet barely made any sound as they touched the tiled grounds in the balcony. I pressed against a wall, my heart pounding in haste.I waited. Some guards wer

Astrid's POVThe silence in the car on our way to Ace's house was just choking. He didn't say a word, but I knew a storm was brewing inside him. He was upset, obviously and I knew it, from the way his jaws kept clenching and unclenching every few seconds.I should be the one getting upset, not him. Not after what he did at the meeting. The minute we entered inside, I was done holding in the anger that was brewing within me."You had no right to interrupt me at that meeting," I said, wheeling back to him.Ace raised an eyebrow at me in pretended innocence. "Interrupt you? You had nothing to contribute, Astrid. You've been off your game for weeks."I crossed my arms, glaring at him. "The question they asked was directed to me and you didn't even give me a chance to answer."He leaned against the wall, an air of nonchalance, though his gaze was keen. "Alright then. What would you have said?"I froze. So fast my lie formed in my mind, I couldn't even stop it."I'd have said no," I said fi

Astrid's POVThe room felt like the walls were closing on me, it was suffocating. Ace and the El Sombra members were deep in their scheming, voices melding together into a hum of plans I couldn't force myself to care about.I sat at the edge of the long table, my mind elsewhere as they debated how to handle Luca's inevitable encounter with El Sombra."Astrid," one of them called, breaking through my haze. "You got any input?"I blinked, my eyes rising to meet the inquiring glances of the group. I used to love these moments; my sharp mind was always one step ahead of everybody else. But now? I couldn't muster the will even to play this game."No," I said briefly, coldly. "I have nothing to add.Ace's gaze lingered on me, an edge of suspicion alive in his eyes. I gave him a well-practiced look of indifference, refusing to let him see through the fissures forming in my resolve."Excuse me," I said, suddenly standing. "I need to use the restroom."Ace didn't respond, but I felt his gaze b

Luca's POVHelena sat across from Halo and me in a dim lit room, her arms crossed tightly, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. The atmosphere felt almost suffocating, a thick tension that wrapped around us like a heavy cloak. Nico and Vincent leaned against the wall in the corner of the dim room, his gaze fixed on her as if trying to decode the puzzle she presented. It was a standoff, and it wasn't lost on me that I had placed myself right in the middle of it."Start talking," I said, leaning forward in my chair, elbows resting on my knees. My voice was calm, though deep down I felt a storm brewing. I needed answers, and I wasn't in any mood for games.Helena squared her shoulders, and for a second, I saw something fragile behind the iron mask. Her face was impassive, but I saw her hands flinch just a little a tell, maybe."Ace killed my father," she said, her voice even and bitter. "My father was working for one of the El Sombra members, he was a low-level enforcer.” She p

And it could be the last chance I get to have. The silence between Ace and I was deafening and I knew if any of us began to talk, there would be an explosion of emotions, especially from my end.Ace began, “I see you've been busy, Astrid.” he said, his tone low and suspicious. He glared but I preferred to look elsewhere, at nothing in particular, rather than stare into those stern brown eyes.“I had some issues with proceeding with the mission last night.”I simply said because narrating everything that happened between Luca and I last night was something I couldn't do.It wouldn't only make me feel more guilty than I am already but it was surely not going to get Ace to be on my good side.
