Luca’s POV

The antiseptic smell filled the underground hospital, a sterile and cold reminder of how far I’d fallen in just a few hours.

My father lay on a bed in the dimly lit room, hooked up to monitors and IVs. His breathing was steady now, but the sight of him so vulnerable sent a surge of anger coursing through me.

This place was a fortress. Buried beneath layers of concrete, with state-of-the-art security, no one could find us here.

It was meant to be a sanctuary, a place where even El Sombra’s enemies couldn’t reach. But the walls felt more like a cage, closing in on me with each passing second.

I sat in the corner of the room, elbows resting on my knees, head bowed. My thoughts were a tangled mess of betrayal, fury, and the bitter sting of failure.

Astrid.

Her name burned in my mind like a brand. I had trusted her, believed in her, even cared for her in a way I hadn’t allowed myself to care for anyone in years. And she’d played me. Used me as a pawn in her game with Ace.

I couldn’t deal with her panic right now.Suddenly, my father stirred, his weak voice breaking the silence. “Luca… are you alright?”I stared at him, anger bubbling up again. “Am I alright?” I repeated, my voice low and sharp. “That’s what you’re asking me? You’ve been hiding this from us. From me. How long have you known? How long have you been coughing your lungs out, pretending nothing was wrong?”To my shock, he laughed, a dry, wheezing sound that only made me angrier. “Luca,” he said, his voice raspy, “I’m old. I’ve lived long enough. What’s the point in clinging to life when it’s already slipping away?”“Stop talking like that,” I snapped, stepping closer to the bed. “You don’t get to talk about death like it’s some casual thing. You don’t get to leave us like this, leave me like this.”His tired eyes softened, and he gestured for me to sit beside him. Reluctantly, I did, th

Luca's POVI couldn't believe it. How did I not notice dad's Illness before now?“Your father was way too stubborn, he didn't want anyone to know about it. I only found out weeks ago, Luca, the same day you brought the hacker lady into the mansion.”I sighed, even while I thought I was doing everything right. Something wrong has been going on behind my back.My mother gasped, changing the topic “But did you say Indiana? Luca, is it safe?”“Don’t worry about that,” I said firmly, cutting her off. “I’ll handle it. I promise you, everything will be fine.”There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Then, softly, my mother said, “Please, be careful, Luca.”“I will,” I said, my voice softening slightly. “And Ma... take care of the girls. Keep them close. Vincent will be with you. He’ll protect you while I’m gone.”I heard her sniffle, and my chest tightened. I hated hearing her like this, but I couldn’t let myself dwell on it. I had to stay focused. When Vincent came back on the

Astrid’s POVThe moment I walked into the meeting with Ace, every pair of eyes in the room turned to me, their expressions a mix of shock, anger, and distrust. I could feel the tension crackling in the air, but I kept my head high and my steps steady. This wasn’t the time to falter. I had made my choice, and I wasn’t going to let anyone question it.“Isn't she Luca's hacker?”I heard one of the members murmuring to another. “Why would Ace bring her here?” the other responded.A man seated near the head of the table couldn't help but make me shudder at the question he asked. “Do we know you?” he stared at me, trying to remember if he actually knew me.“She's astrid, Luca's hacker… I mean a former hacker.”Ace introduced me to everyone as I stood there waiting for someone to speak.“Ace? She’s his ally?” The man that had the shuddering question scoffed, slamming his hands on the table, his voice booming.“A snake in our den, Ace. What the hell do you think you're doing?”Murmurs of agr

Astrid's POVI stepped into the kitchen, craving something cold to drink after the suffocating heat of the day. My plan was to pour myself a glass of orange juice and retreat to my room, away from the endless chaos that seemed to follow Ace.But of course, nothing here was simple. The maids insisted on serving me, practically wrestling the glass from my hands. Their persistence was almost comical, but it was also exhausting.“Why are you all so relentless?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at them. One of the younger maids hesitated before answering, her voice trembling slightly. “Mr. Ace doesn’t like it when his guests aren’t properly taken care of. He…he specifically told us to treat you like a princess.”A princess. I nearly laughed out loud. I wasn’t sure what Ace was trying to pull with this nonsense, but it was starting to get on my nerves. I didn’t want special treatment. I didn’t need anyone fussing over me.It was what I handled in Luca's mansion, and I wouldn't let it go on here.

Astrid's POVThe maids returned with the first aid kit, and Ace insisted on cleaning the wound himself, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the frustration simmering just beneath the surface. As we sat there on the cushion, I couldn't help but think if he sincerely cared about me. The Ace I knew before was in conclusion a selfish bring. But now it seemed all that had changed only because I had agreed to be with him.Was he doing all this so I'd have no reason to leave just like I left Luca? The thoughts lingered in my head, and now I came to the conclusion that I overthink so much.I watched him for a while, taking my gaze away once he glanced at me. I felt his hands rubbing my hands romantically, on purpose. The whole thing was becoming too weird to handle. “I can do it myself.” I said politely, taking over as I began to treat my pinky finger.Ace stood up, I could sense that he was staring. “Next time, just let them handle it.”I nodded, but my mind was elsewhere. Astrid's POVAfter Ace left, I headed back to my room, my thoughts swirling in a chaotic mess. His words replayed in my mind, Luca will be found, and he will get what he deserves. Ace always had a way of making things sound so final, so absolute. But this wasn’t as simple as he made it out to be.I shut the door behind me and locked it, needing the solitude to think clearly. Pulling my laptop out from its hiding spot, I sat on the bed and opened it. Ace had told me that Luca had disappeared, and I couldn’t help but feel a pang of frustration. If Luca was gone, then everything, the information I knew, the leverage I had was useless.I leaned back against the headboard, staring at the screen as my fingers hovered over the keyboard. I had to try. If Luca was out there, I needed to find him before anyone else did. I began typing, my fingers moving with a rhythm that felt all too familiar. Back when I worked for Luca, his systems were an extension of myself. I’d spent hours hacking, bui

Astrid's POVDinner was supposed to be a quiet moment for me, a chance to gather my thoughts and regroup after the day’s chaos. But instead, I found myself still glued to my laptop, sifting through more dead ends. Every call I made to resorts, penthouses, and properties Luca owned turned up nothing. He wasn’t keeping his family in any of the obvious places.Of course, he wasn’t. Luca was smarter than that, too clever to leave a trail anyone could follow, even me.Then I saw one last place I could call. It was a The sound of footsteps approaching pulled me from my thoughts. I barely had time to close the laptop before Ace walked in, his presence as commanding as ever.“Where have you been?” I asked casually, trying to sound more curious than nervous. “Did you go to any meetings without me?”Ace shook his head, a small smirk playing on his lips. “No meetings today. There’s one scheduled for tomorrow, though.”I nodded, trying to mask my relief. “Well, you should join me for dinner, th

Astrid's POVAs the members of the El sombra planned a funeral for the deceased Ivano family, they also planned out how to capture Luca and that's where I come in, that's the reason I was here. And yes, I had followed Ace to another meeting like he had not just threaten me last night. What was my purpose anyways? Did I really want to go ahead with being on Ace's side. I sighed, I wished I could disappear into thin air, it'd bring massive peace into my life if neither Ace or Luca knew where I was.My thoughts were dragged away when I suddenly felt a hand rubbing my left shoulders. “Is everything alright?” Ace whispered, his eyes filled with concern.I shrugged, turning back to my computer. “Yeah, I guess.” I muttered “Do you think your source got his tracks right?” one of the members asked another who had suggested taking the search for Luca's family into his own hands.“Whoever works under me knows how to do their jobs right. And it could be the last chance I get to have. The silence between Ace and I was deafening and I knew if any of us began to talk, there would be an explosion of emotions, especially from my end.Ace began, “I see you've been busy, Astrid.” he said, his tone low and suspicious. He glared but I preferred to look elsewhere, at nothing in particular, rather than stare into those stern brown eyes.“I had some issues with proceeding with the mission last night.”I simply said because narrating everything that happened between Luca and I last night was something I couldn't do.It wouldn't only make me feel more guilty than I am already but it was surely not going to get Ace to be on my good side. Whatever he wanted to do to me, he could. I wasn't scared of him.“I know that, my men informed me about how you left the

I was moving slowly in a discouraged manner until I managed to reach the gray headstone with my father’s name on it.His absence has been weighing down on me but this time, it hit harder than ever. I made my way over to his grave and kneeled beside it, the scent of dirt and lilies swirled all around me as I rested the flowers lightly on his grave. “Dad,” I stuttered, the hay of my voice was barely holding, “I don’t know what to do anymore. I thought siding with Ace, destroying Luca, that would give me peace. But now…” I felt like I was scrambling my words together. The cold stone wall came onto my palms when I lifted my hands together in prayer. “Do I believe that there’s something left of the man I once trusted? Or do I keep on walking this path with Ace? Luca's POVThe blunt, sterile scent of the hospital room invaded my senses before I even opened my eyes. As I blinked towards the bright light, the sound of the beeping monitor was steady, rhythmic and annoyingly loud. My eyelids feel heavy, but I forced them open, squinting against the glare of the fluorescent lights above me.My body ached, my arm throbbed, but none of it mattered.“Astrid…” her name slipped from my lips before I even knew I was speaking. It was a whisper, barely audible, but it carried the weight of everything I felt.“She's not here,” the voice sounded familiar from my left.I turned my head, wincing at the sharp pill in my shoulder. Halo was standing in the corner of the room, arms crossed, his sharp eyes watching me like a hawk. The words sank in. Astrid wasn't here. A twinge of disappointment settled in my chest, and I wasn't sure why. Maybe it was because part of me had hoped everything from last night was just a dream. But it wasn't.“What happened to you, L

The edges of my vision went black as the blood continued streaming, soaking the shredded fabric of my shirt.“Stop talking!” Astrid snapped, panic lacing her voice. “You’re bleeding too much.”I bit my lip to stave off the pain. “Don’t think… This changes everything.“Shut up, Luca!” she barked, stepping closer. “The more you speak, the more blood you shed. Astrid's POVThe heat in the vehicle was stifling, the incessant thud of my heart beat drowned the low whine of the car engine. I perched on the front seat, clenching my laptop between my thighs, the glowing screen setting up a soft light on my face. My earpods fitted perfectly into my ears while the voices of the men Ace had assigned to burn down Luca's property became clearer and clearer.“We've handled the securities ma'am, all of them down. Shall we proceed to the next thing?” One of them inquired.I gulped lightly while focusing on the screen. The camcorder appeared to be running a live feed of what appeared to be Luca's father's mansion, clearly succeeding in scaring me. It was stunning, in its own almost completely desolate and darkened way. An era of Luca was to be turned into a few sharp black ashes and dust.“Hold your position. You set the mansion ablaze on my call.” I responded as I was consistently wavered my fingers which were resting over the keyboard. While I didn't

Astrid's POVThe more I thought about leaving Ace, the more difficult I thought it would be. It felt so impossible. I knew so much about this dangerous world of the mafias, something I never thought I'd get myself involved in.And now, all because of me, all because of the suggestion I brought up at the El sombra meeting, Luca was going to be drained of everything. I still couldn't forgive him for everything, how he had used me as a mere tool for building his territory, free from bad guys, free from more enemies. I would be the reason he crumbled overnight.Suddenly a knock on the door distracted my thoughts, so I closed my laptop. Hiding my plans of booking an aircraft for an escape to somewhere far, somewhere no one would know me. I would begin my life again, start anew and forget whatever I was experiencing here in the world of these brutal people.I opened the door slightly, it was a maid. “Sir Ace wants you at his office.” She informed me politely. They all want to flee because I'm in trouble?” I asked rhetorically, hissing as I flung the paper towards the desk in frustration.Halo approached the table, coffee in one hand as he used his free hand to drag out a chair. He sat down, “Well I guess you can say it like that.” he replied, sipping his coffee. He dropped the cup, stretching his hands towards the papers to grab it.“I think they are all a bunch of cowards. Running away after all they wanted was the Ivano family gone. Luca's POVThe city's buzz echoed in the atmosphere as I remained in my softly illuminated penthouse, gazing through the expansive glass doors up from here. The moon's light shone its brightness, it resembled cars as they weaved through the streets underneath, creating memories. Indiana wasn't a place of residence, yet it had turned into a refuge of sorts until things calmed down. I rested against the rim of the glass, the cold piercing my skin. I recalled the hospital, envisioning my father's pale ailing face while he rested on the surgical table. He appeared delicate, more feeble than I ever imagined a man like him could be. “Forgive them,” he had stated, his voice hardly more than a murmur. "Look after your mother and your sisters." "Also, Astrid…" I tightened my hands recalling the memory. His words pierced me like a sword. Even in the face of death, my father managed to consider Astrid. He thought she was my perfect match, that she merited my class of women. Deep down within
