Ch103: Retreat

When the door swung open, my head guard, Simon, was waiting for me. From the dark look on his face I knew it wasn't good news. So I stepped out and shut the door behind me.

Sapphira was still in a daze by our intimate exchange so I wasn't afraid she would eavesdrop or anything.

"What is it, Simon?"

His eyes darted to the left and then to the right as if to check if someone was nearby. My interest was now piqued and the emotions that had aroused in me earlier doused immediately.

He stepped forward and bowed just then. "Alpha, I have bad news."

'I can tell,' I didn't voice out these words though and just waited for him to speak.

"The guards we sent to Willow Creek went missing. We lost contact with them."

"What?" My voice rose a bit louder than I expected.

"Yes, alpha. We fear they might be dead or held captive by that witch."

My brows furrowed and my eyes darkened. It's been decades since the issue with Vespera occurred. Could she still be alive? Could the missing guards really
